THE NEW BARN. There's been a gay bar at 418 Church St since 1975.

Halloween evening saw the triumphant return of The Barn, Toronto's legendary cruising bar. By midnight hundreds of homos had lined up on Church St halfway to Gerrard to get inside. The sea of patient and celebratory men — some in costume, many not — were a mix of leather guys, boy-next-door types and preppies, with ages ranging from 20s to 70s.

On the outside The Barn is still sporting its infamous mural of two cowboys with their arms around each other on its south-facing wall but the rest of the building — formerly right yellow and covered in liquor logos — has been repainted a subdued reddish brown which will no doubt be a relief to the local residents association.

Inside the new Barn is very much like the old Barn — rustic and a lot of fun. The restored club has offers a functional cruising space on the third floor with a new reasonably sized backroom. The second-storey dancefloor was hopping on opening night and two sweet shirtless young men were working the second-floor bar. The first floor is much the same as it was before former owner Janko Naglic died in 2004 with its more laidback dancefloor, bar and brick fireplace. The security staff was friendly, helpful and unobtrusive though wired up in state-of-the-art communication gear.

There was a moving tribute to Naglic, the founder of The Barn who was killed on Oct 27, 2004; his black-and-white portrait now graces the mantle of the first-floor fireplace. It is a wonderful tribute to the original owner, but also to what the new owners and management are trying to do: reestablish a lost and valued community institution.

Friendly staff.....
Fond memories of masculine men dancing and flirting. The Barn is not what it once was. I suppose change is inevitable, however, it seems a shame that this has become just another unfriendly group oriented Toronto "Twink" bar. The staff were very friendly, that was nice to experience.

Barn is not the same!
Waiting in line outside, then waiting inside to get upstairs, then waiting again to get from 3rd to 2nd floor. Not good!! Owners need to have something on each floor. Old Barn had a good dance floor and lounge area on 1st floor. Change is needed.

Barn a disappointment!
I just moved to Toronto from the West Coast last year and, up until recently, all I've heard about is how amazing the barn used to be, so needless to say, when I found out that it was reopening I was excited. On it's opening weekend it seemed that all we did was stand in line. First to get in and then to get upstairs. The coat check was way overpriced at $2.25 and so were the drinks. I paid $17.00 for two screwdrivers. Granted they were Grey Goose, but never the less at the other pubs, such as Woody's for example, they're 50 cents more not three dollars more. On the sunday, we went to the underwear party, and after freezing our butts off at the coat check while we were undressing, we were shocked to see that people were let in to the party fully clothed. I thought that being in your underwear was mandatory. We were also appalled to see that there were female security on staff. Men walking around in their underwear showing off the goods and there's female security? I mean come on. Cut me some slack here. You guys are going to have to do better than that.

was my old stomping ground
was visiting during the opening and first underwear party. use to live here and go often years back. everything seemed very regimented with line ups everywhere and security of a mega club. its the barn for crying out loud. things use to flow from floor to floor and no lines except the coat check back then. there were no female security either especially at the underwear party. had the whole bottom floor area to change, now its at the coat check with the cold air rushing in. I had to hold an old mans hand so he could get his pants off in that confined space. hopefully these things will not remain as I look forward to going again on my many visits back to toronto. cheers

Former Employee
I was blessed to have worked for a great boss during my employment at the Barn & Stables. Janko Naglic was the type of business person who took his customer's & staff's loyalty to heart. He made sure that the people were happy. Hosting two gay employee's wedding reception, celebrating loyal customer's & staff's birthdays, and taking chances with the Underwear Party & T'n'T Nude Parties, was Janko's way of thanking the community that he loved. I would love to see what the Barn & Stables looks like today. Especially Janko Naglic's portrait. But, like many, I would always remember & thank the original owner for giving us a place to call our own during his reign. To me, that was the Barn & Stables.
