Detective Constable Cheryl Leggett, of the Vancouver police hate-crimes unit, says there’s “no reason to believe” that a Jan 31 stabbing incident at a West End apartment building was motivated by hate.

Seven people injured in the early evening attack were found in different areas inside a seven-floor apartment building located in the 1200 block of Barclay Street.

Six of the seven were sent to hospital with undetermined injuries. Two of the injured have been released, while four remain hospitalized, with one person in critical condition, according to a police statement.

Initial reports indicated that at least two people were stabbed in the throat and two more in the chest. According to The Province, about three residents also reported seeing a man running through the building with a hammer.

A suspect was later taken into custody near the apartment building.

One man at the scene, who requested anonymity, told Xtra he doesn’t believe the attack was motivated by homophobia “whatsoever.”

He says he saw the suspect, who is reportedly in his 30s, being restrained and put into the back of a police van.

Police media relations officer Randy Fincham told reporters that the attack seemed to be random and that those injured did not appear to be related to one another.

Police are continuing their investigation.

Terrifying
A lot of news reports are really emphasizing how entirely random and out of character for crime in Vancouver this incident is. I can only hope that everyone comes out of this alive, and the measures that are put in place as a result of this work to prevent anything like it from happening again in the future.

Yes, and...
If Vancouver is as cosmopolitan as it claims to be, this should not be a shock. It's very sad news, but you're in the big city now imagine what those working in emerg in hospitals see daily but doesn't get reported. #mustnttarnishimage So why is this news in Xtra? Just because it happened in the Westend? Are you going to start reporting regular news when it happens in East Vancouver? Did you need some filler for your small paper? No wonder people don't think highly of Xtra anymore.

Oh Please!
Some lunatic goes beserk for some unknown reason at this point. Just because it happened in the West End don't make it into some sort of homophobia thing. Geez.

Community
Even though this crime is not necessarily homophobic, it did happen in the west end. Just because Xtra is generally about lgbtq topics, is does not mean we should neglect the events positive or negative of the heterosexual residents of our community. Xtra is supposed to be about liberation of equality, not segregation, and it is hypocrytical to exclude our neighbours just because they are straight.

Broader community coverage a GOOD thing
(Full disclosure -- I have written for Xtra as a freelance journalist) Addressing the issue of possible homophobia in a knife attack in the West End that left seven people injured is EXACTLY what Xtra should be doing. Yes, the queer population has been migrating from the West End for years, but the concentration is still relatively high. And yes, if this happened near the Drive, I would expect the same sort of coverage. Further, if this attack turns out to be the 'random spree of a crazy person' then it will certainly be in the minority when it comes to acts of public violence. It is far, FAR more likely that such an attack would be carried out by someone known to at least some of the victims, so the possibility of it being more closely related to our community is not far fetched. And finally, i personally thank Xtra for covering this because I'm currently living outside the country for several months and Xtra's website is where I found out about a terrifying event that happened AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY APARTMENT which is currently being sublet to CLOSE FRIENDS. I suppose I could've read about it on the Province's website, but I'd rather stick pins in my eyes.

Of Course
Extra West should report on this violent attack, eyebrows would certainly be raised if they didn't. That being said, trying to make everything "gay related" just because it happened in the West End is ridiculous. What's next, a report that a fender bender on Davie St. is being looked at as a possible act of homophobia? Just report the facts of the incident without trying to twist it into a homophobia type thing, that's all I am trying to say.
