Teacher suspended for saying 'I hate fags'
EDUCATION / Miko McGrady says comment taken out of context

Gay community advocates are questioning why a teacher who made an allegedly homophobic remark to an openly gay student in class has received only a two-week suspension from the Ministry of Education.

A Penticton Secondary School teacher agreed Oct 30 to a two-week suspension under the provincial Teachers Act after he admitted he made an insensitive comment about sexual orientation to an openly gay male student.

According to the citation against French immersion teacher Miko McGrady, in response to a comment by the student, McGrady said, “Je déteste les pédéles," which roughly translates into “I hate fags."

The citation says also that McGrady singled out an openly gay male student by referring to him as “flamboyant."

"What incredibly unprofessional behaviour from a teacher," says Ryan Clayton, who co-spearheaded last year’s Purple Letter Campaign requesting anti-homophobia programs in schools.

"You don't get to be the class bully and the teacher at the same time," Clayton says. "How devastating. It sounds like he's not someone who should be in front of a group of kids."

Clayton says there aren’t enough resources for queer youth in small towns without teachers contributing to their problems.

But McGrady tells Xtra the student in question asked to be in his class again the following year.

"I have nothing against gay people," he says. “It was totally taken out of context. It wasn't a homophobic thing at all."

An Oct 30 summary of the resolution of the case from the Ministry of Education's Teacher Regulation Branch says McGrady was not motivated by homophobia and had no intention to hurt the student.

However, the summary says McGrady agrees the statement should not have been made under any circumstances.

Clayton still wants to know why the suspension is so short. "They'd better have a good explanation for this," he says.

Asked about the incident at the Nov 13 Erase Bullying summit in Vancouver, Premier Christy Clark says the province has a long way to go in dealing with bullying-related issues.

"We have to send the right message that bullying will be dealt with appropriately," Clark says. "It's an example of what we have to do better."

The citation also includes allegations that McGrady once told a female student the reason he smelled was that he had slept with her mother the night before and had not yet taken a shower; that he said a female student absent from class due to illness might have “morning sickness;” and that he made inappropriate jokes and comments to students in class about student sexual activity, drinking and drug use.

The incidents allegedly took place between December 2009 and June 2010.

As a result of McGrady's agreement to the suspension, the citation was rescinded.

McGrady is currently listed as a teacher at Penticton's KVR Middle School. The district does not have an anti-homophobia policy.

Disappointed how quick you judge
I am disappointed to see how quickly people can judge without the full story. Mr. McGrady is an extremely well liked teacher. Three years ago he had a vindictive female student that was trying “throw him under the bus” for her own benefit. She was failing his class. If you had read more than this article, possible some of the many letters written by students explaining the situation, one of which was by a lesbian student, you would understand what a great teacher he is. All of the vulgar allegations were thrown out and were unsubstantiated, yet you didn't hesitate to repost them. The media has done nothing but bully Mr. McGrady and the comments ahead of mine have followed like sheep. Mr. McGrady did make a mistake and should have not compared a student rudely explaining he hated French to saying that “it was as inappropriate as him saying he did not like gays”. It was never meant as hate towards gays. Knowing him personally I know he has gay friends and family and has never judged. It amazes me how quick you are all able to jump on the hate band wagon.

Letter to the Editor: Penticton Western News
Published: October 22, 2012 2:00 PM This is in response to the article concerning allegations against Penticton teacher Miko McGrady. My name is Brenda Mann. I was a student of Miko’s in high school class before graduating this past year. I was surprised to see so much controversy concerning him. Throughout the school year with him he always had a positive attitude towards students and was always available for extra help or concerns with school work — for his class and others alike. I found him to be a friend as well as a role model. He taught my elder sister in both high school and middle school and she has never had any complaints about him. I myself am a young lesbian and have never felt threatened or discriminated against by him. He never once made offhand comments. I joke about it myself and he would chuckle along with myself and the rest of the class, but I was never ostracized or mistreated. So it concerns me that his career is being brought into question for this. Society is more open than it used to be. There is an obvious difference between a joke and homophobia, having dealt with both in my experiences. These accusations are a misinterpretation and have been blown out of proportion. If the board is this concerned with his teaching abilities, by all means, sit in with a class. You will see why his past and present students adore him, and support him so firmly. Classy. http://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/opinion/letters/175304781.html http://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/opinion/letters/175304591.html http://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/opinion/letters/175304591.html These are just a couple of links to comments made. If this comment box allowed for more typing I'd post everything word for word just to show how uninformed and judgmental you are. Apparently it takes a rocket scientist to use Google. This is the only negative backlash he has received from people aside from the media. Thank god the people of Penticton are not as narrow minded and base their opinions on experience and not what they read in a paper.

oh karla
Just so you are aware, I had been visiting good ol Penticton for my 41 years every summer, but will never set foot there again, not after last summer. Those good old teenagers, probably students of this teacher, decided last summer, in their drunken stooper, to verbally lash and assault my partner and I on the lake shore. For what? For doing photography. Nice eh? Pretty narrow-minded wouldn't you say? Needless to say, my tradition of visiting is now OVER! The police did NOTHING with us surrounded by about 12 very drunken teenagers accusing and calling us every dirty filthy name in the book. First time I have been scared since I was about 16 years old.

Marc it is unfortunate that you had such a negative experience, which can happen anywhere. It angers me that anyone, even you, should have to deal with that. I'm not going to verbally attack you or get into a name calling match. I was merely vocalizing my opinion and trying to share some true information, which we are all allowed to do.
