Pornstar Tony Buff: 'For me, fisting is an extremely intimate act'
PORNSTAR / Co-creator of Titan Media's hardcore Rough videos chats with Xtra

A self-described “kinky bisexualqueer,” pornstar Tony Buff is one of the biggest names on the fetish scene. The co-creator of Titan Media’s hardcore Rough line of videos is also a community activist and touring coach who spends the year teaching others safe and responsible ways to expand their sexual horizons.

No wonder Priape Vancouver invited him to help celebrate its fifth birthday in June. Did I mention he’s fuck-off gorgeous, too?

Buff sat down with Xtra for an interview while he was in town. Here is an excerpt from that session.

Xtra: What appeals to you about kinky play?

Tony Buff: For me, fisting is an extremely intimate act. You see a lot of videos that capture this kind of really athletic, punch-fuck, how-fast-how-hard-how-much can you take sort of thing. And that’s fine, but I take a different approach. It’s about the process, about the ride. It’s slow, methodical, very connected. Lots of eye contact, lots of breathing.

Xtra: Is there anything you don’t do, that is just too freaky even for you?

TB: I’m a man who has sex with men, so I understand that, well... shit happens. But I’m not really into it.

Xtra: I find it interesting that you refer to them as art films, not as porn films. That indicates a certain respect for the form, I think.

TB: I call them that to remind me of what I’m trying to do with it. If you look back, like 1972, Brad Halstead released LA Plays Itself. It was the first depiction of the iconic urban leatherman, and it contained a fisting scene for the first time ever on film. Then we had Christopher Rage capture that essence of BDSM through his movies in the ’80s, and Daddy Zeus was doing it in the ’90s, and I wanted my efforts in the industry to reflect that. To represent, to the best of my ability, the members of my tribe, and actually create community out of it. It’s not just porn for me, it’s a documentation of real play.

Xtra: So you don’t particularly enjoy these studios that simply rely on “boy on couch?”

TB: Yeah, I prefer substance. I love Joe Gage’s movies because he’s a storyteller. I like the setup, the environment, the context. It helps me engage with the people on the screen and actually feel something, rather than just looking at cocks being jacked.

Xtra: Do you think there are more people getting involved in the scene these days?

TB: Sexual liberation and queer liberation, the exploration of people’s kinky sides; I think that’s expanding. But there’s a lot of assimilationist tendencies in the gay community right now, a move to push the drag queens and the leathermen back into the closet because they want to promote worthy things like equal rights — but I don’t think that the two are mutually exclusive. I think it’s extremely important that we encourage a positive sexual philosophy.

Xtra: Have you had a chance to play here in Vancouver?

TB: Oh yeah, I’m a regular. I’ve got a collared boy here. I got to do a demo at the PumpJack — I got to tie up a really beautiful young man in full suspension in front of the crowd. He seemed to enjoy himself quite a bit.

hate gay men much, porn queerdude
What a biased fucked up statement he makes about being a man having sex with men so shit happens! Yet he claims he is bisexualqueer so he must be fucking women and transpeople as well -- does shit not come out of their assholes? Shit is hardly a gay male phenom. What a weird thing to say for someone supposedly so sex positive. Maybe he is more on the het side of bi and dislikes gay men and our "shit". Another sickeningly retrograde asshole impressing the provincials with a few cheap sex tricks. Pathetic.

HUH?
I'm glad I wasn't at PJ's that night. I loves my sex, but watching a public sex show with my beer, ain't my cup of tea, er beer! What strange behaviour.

What about the Ending ?
It always so refreshing to see a young man comfortable with sexuality. What the interviewer doesn't ask him though, is what he's planning to do with himself years down the road when nobody wants him (especially porno industry) and his cellphone no longer rings, and he realizes that all he was in his youth was a piece of meat put out there for the enjoyment of thousands of men jerking off to his image. I've personally known several people that worked in the adult business. Very seldom are the endings pretty. I wish him luck.

bi bi birdie
Jeff Taylor -- the guy is bisexual so he will of course marry a woman (prolly from the sex industry also) and settle into a hetero suburban swingers old age and never think about faggots again (except when royalty cheques come in from old fag fans). Typical bisexual male. Use the fags while the looks last then head back to the womenfolk for real relationships.

@ anger management, Jeff Taylor & post-loogie: You guys are so way off base it's not even funny. This is not the full interview - it's barely a quarter of what we actually talked about. I will load the full interview to my facebook age. And if you choose to read it, you will find that: A) He will not settle down with a woman when he finishes fucking men for money. He is currently in a polyamorous relationship with at least two different men and probably more, which is part of a larger family of omnisexual polyamorous friends and lovers. B) He spends his spare time when not on screen educating people on how to have every kind of safe sex they can think of and a few kinds they can't. He is also now directing and producing as well as performing. He has won awards in three disciplines. All of these things will give him a full life long after he becomes one of the sexually active over-30 gay men you are apparently so repulsed by. C) You have never met a more sex-positive man than this, nor one more intelligent and a long-way from the drugged-up-mess porn star stereotype. I will expect your apologies forthwith.

Will ever mature?
I really shake my head everytime I come across an article like this one. How can we ever move forward when other's consider us just a bunch of sex obsessed perv's. Don't get me wrong I am not closeted or some sort of prude but the obsession with sex , sex, sex in relation to everything gay just disturbs me. Can't extrawest start to become a leader for change of the image of homosexuality instead of printing all of these sex crazed articles from penis size to fisting? Enough already, am I the only gay man who hopes for some positive change or will the community forever be focused on youth, looks , sex and money.

So True
@ Steve, well said :) Especially since the internet is the largest source of all things porn & sex in the history of man, you'd think that there would be at least one internet site for gay people that focuses on 'other' things more than what's between a person's legs. I'm no different than the next guy, but sex 24/7 is a sad statement about the 'gay scene'.

provincialism and bisexual cop outs
Ed Wood, you tell us what your bisexual subject is doing NOW -- I talked about what he as a bisexual will do in the future which is marry a woman and leave dirty fags behind. He claims the identity of bisexual so he is boring and of no interest to me. Another tired bisexual with a big dick mining fag fantasy for money before retiring to womancunt. Boring. Only provincial twerps find this kind of thing newsworthy any more. NEXT! (And make it homo at least next time and not another bisexual womanbanger. thnx)

Interesting Interview
Whatever one may think of Tony Buff's sexual interests or involvement in sexual entertainment, this was an interesting read. While being Gay is more than just sex, we must not hide the fact we do enjoy sex and that LGBT people may make different sexual choices. To try and hide this or cover it up is prudery at its worst-- and prudery kills through shame, failure to seek treatment for STDs and the fact we often cannot be out about who we are because of social attitudes toward sex.

Oh Please Wayne
An interesting read? Maybe we and by we I mean the "community" and extrawest try to get away from the stereotypes. Sorry but I could care less about Tony Buff and his fisting one of his "collard boys". If you find it interesting so be it. I can move along and not read the story, right? What bothers me is the constant focus on sexual activities like these and perpetuating the gay stereotype which extrawest does time and time again. I just feel it's time we matured and as someone else put it grew up. That would be so refreshing, sadly I don't see it happening anytime soon. To bad for all of us , in my opinion. By the way, I don't see how this interview with this guy is any sort of public health awareness campaign but nice try.

boring suburban shock jocks
Wayne -- the point is that this twerp is NOT GAY! He is bisexual and queer by his own admission. His audience is straight people and not homosexual men. He is exploiting gay men for his bi ends. A phoney. And boring. Also the whole issue of interviewing anyone who does sex for a living is old fashioned and insane for homos of my generation who did all this in the privacy of our own homes and clubs decades ago! Perhaps Reader's Digest is a better audience for this kind of rockem sockem sex shockem bi and hetero bullshit.

Fuck you, hater of sex workers!
Jeff Taylor: I hate your letter. Period. Have you heard of the expression "back-handed compliment?". You epitomize that type of compliment. You congratulate Tony Buff about his comfort with sexuality. But then you attack his career - his role as a sex worker. Why are queers so hateful towards those who promote themselves as sexual beings, when they are young? Why are you looking at his role as a "piece of meat" as a negative? What is the problem with thousands of men jerking off to his image? I've known plenty of people in the adult industry as well --- yes --- many of the endings are not pretty. But many of them evolve into other types of entrepeneurs. Or teachers. Or counsellors. Why is the queer community so hateful towards those who we jerk off to every night before going to bed? Jeff Taylor - you are attempting to be friendly, but please re-read your piece, you are just adding one more piece of hatred onto a steaming pile of sex-worker negativity that seems to never end. And you come across as bitter. "What about the ending" is a valid question, but the way you frame it is not serious. You are yet one more person who is just preaching negativity towards escorts, porn performers, and safe sex heroes like Tony Buff. Fuck you. Love Todd Klinck.

Manners & Class ? - NOPE ....
Oh Todd, get over yourself dear. Maybe invest in some angry management classes while you're at it. P.S. I thought Toronto Pride made an absolute terrible choice when YOU were selected as parade marshal. My reason behind my opinion is that gay culture is already sexualized enough without having some washed up, old, tired, street walker heading the damn parade. But, I digress ;) Just one more thing before I jerk off before going to bed, not once in my original comment(s) did I say anything that remotely comes close to what you claim; that I hate sex workers. So, before you comment on other's comments, READ THE BLOODY THINGS FIRST. Love, Jeff Taylor
