Finally!!!
On this, the 12th annual Pride week in Nanaimo, and the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, we finally have a mayor who signed our proclamation of June 21st to 28th as Gay Pride week. Not only did Mayor John Ruttan sign the proclamation, he and councillor Fred Pattje accepted the invitation extended to them to attend the flag raising ceremony! It is great to finally see support from the representatives that our community elected. So, thank you to the Mayor and to council, and thank you to all the great people who have attended some of the events, which are happening all week long. Happy Pride to everyone out there!

Finally proud to be from Nanaimo
Two years ago I wrote to XtraWest about how 25 years earlier upon graduation my classmates and I escaped the small town attitudes of Nanaimo despite its burgeoning size, and how I was disappointed that the then mayor would not proclaim Pride. I'm so glad to hear that Nanaimo is finally stepping into the age of equality and diversity. But before my parents can step out of their own closet and admit to their friends that they have a gay son, attitudes in Nanaimo still need to move forward. This is just the first step of many. Now, how about a gay bar/lounge? Now that I know that there's a Pride Week in Nanaimo, there's a reason to return. I'll have to be there next year. The Hub City is a great place for the outdoors: sailing, hiking, swimming, camping.
