Former VP resigns from Pride Society board
PRIDE / But president insists VPS not in trouble

Despite ongoing challenges to his leadership and another director’s resignation, Vancouver Pride Society (VPS) president Ken Coolen says it’s business as usual for the organization.

Three days after a narrow majority reelected Coolen and the 12-person board dwindled to five as a result, the VPS’s new directors met Jan 24 and accepted their vice-president’s resignation as well.

Shawn Ewing told Xtra after the Jan 21 annual general meeting that she intended to leave the board because she doesn’t think Coolen is the right person to lead the VPS.
The Vancouver Pride Society is holding at five board members (clockwise from left: Rick Leonovich, Trevor Ashcroft, Ken Coolen, Monika Whitney and Raigen D'Angelo) after several directors refused to run again under Coolen.
(Tallulah)

“This isn’t a personal thing. I love Ken, the person, dearly. He has done some wonderful things for the organization and the community,” Ewing said. “This is about the leadership of an organization I care very deeply about. He is not the right person to lead.”

Several other former directors echoed Ewing’s concerns on Saturday.

Coolen says he knew of Ewing’s intention to leave. “Like everybody else, she thought that there needed to be new leadership and I did listen to both sides of that, but I feel that I’ve brought this organization a long way in the last three years and I have had many things accomplished under me.”

Coolen acknowledged Ewing’s contributions to the board and says she will be missed. “She saved this organization,” he says. “She did a lot of great things, and I was the one who personally asked her to come back to the board last year.”

Ewing says resigning wasn't easy. Her resignation would have incapacitated the board, leaving it with only four members when its bylaws require five to function. But Coolen persuaded former VPS director and volunteer coordinator Monika Whitney to return to fill Ewing’s seat. The five members of the VPS board are now Whitney, Coolen, Rick Leonovich, Raigen D’Angelo and Trevor Ashcroft.

Ewing says she's glad Coolen was able to fill the seat. "But it doesn't take away from the fact that I don't think Ken is right for the position. In my heart of hearts, I hope he will prove me wrong."

Coolen admits he asked Whitney to come back in an attempt to save the VPS from collapse.

“I didn’t want this organization to be crippled by the choices that other people made to leave,” he says.

“I find a way to bring people to the table,” he adds.

“For me it’s not about who the president is,” says Whitney, when asked if she has concerns about Coolen’s leadership.

“I don’t think that Pride is the president,” she says. “To me it’s really about the whole picture. Pride is really important to me. What matters at the end of the day is that we move forward and make sure Pride happens.”

Several outgoing VPS directors, who refused to run again after Coolen’s reelection, expressed concern about his leadership after the annual general meeting.

“A number of people have been questioning the leadership,” outgoing treasurer Bernard LeClair told Xtra. “I have been questioning the leadership.”

“If it wasn’t for Ken [Coolen], there would be a full executive and full board, but no one wants to run because no one wants to sit under him,” said former sponsorship coordinator Caryl Dolinko, whose contract the VPS terminated prematurely last July.

“There was a mass withdrawal of directors from the board due to Ken Coolen's leadership and behaviour,” said former director Chris Ellis, who could not attend the meeting. “The VPS is in crisis — needlessly so.”

Among other things, Ellis says Coolen has not filed a written president’s report in years — though Coolen did present a verbal report at the Jan 24 board meeting acknowledging past mistakes and focusing on the future.

Ellis also thinks Coolen has become too involved in national and international queer outreach work at the expense of his responsibilities closer to home.

Outreach has been “one of the big keys to Pride’s success,” Coolen says, though he admits he may have focused too much on it.

But, he says, he is no longer chair of the outreach committee. He says he now plans to focus on rebuilding the board.

D’Angelo is the new outreach chair.

“We are not in a dire situation,” Coolen insists. “We have some work to do and we definitely have some rebuilding to do, but I am not afraid for the future of this organization. We are financially healthy. We have the infrastructure that has not been seen before in this organization and the staff is phenomenal. We are not in a scary place.”

“There have been times in the past when the board has been down to five or six people,” Coolen notes. “This isn’t new for this organization by any means.”

Delusional
Anyone with any sense of decency would have resigned. Ken is the problem, not the soluntion. He doesn't get that. Yet.

Bringing people to the table?
How can Mr Coolen say that, "he brings people to the table," after persuading one person to join the board when his failure to lead the organization resulted in SEVEN -- not one but SEVEN -- board members to either resign or not seek re-election? I think someone is so delusional and megalomanic to realize how much he is hurting the organization and how much he's hurting the queer community.

what a joke
After all of this a board member that was barely present last year returns to save the day... seems to be a perfect plan for Ken Coolens imaginarium show. This has become a joke and my money and my company´s money will be nowhere near the festival and society this year.

Explain?
Could someone, for the sake of understanding, please explain what Ken Coolen has done? Specifically. I have seen a lot of complaining about him but no specific examples of what he has done. Why has no one specifically given details about why his leadership is being questioned?

A Challenge to the Community
If you are concerned about this, join the board. It's a pretty easy thing to just sit behind your computer and complain about the leadership. There's nothing keeping anyone on here from purchasing a $10 VPS membership and sitting on the board. If you are disappointed in how an organization is being run and you have an opportunity to sit on the board and actually, LITERALLY, impact how it's run, why wouldn't you? It's clear that everyone commenting on here thinks they have solutions and answers on how to make the VPS better, so why not do something about it? Go to the next board meeting, buy a membership, sit on the board and wait 60 days until you can be appointed. If there are only 5 directors now and 7 more people join, that's more voting power split among more individuals. It's easy to sit back and say "I'm not going to join that board because I don't agree with the president." It's a lot harder to step up and make a commitment to actually make change. Will it be easy? Probably not. Will it make people leave nasty comments about you on an Xtra West message board? Maybe. Will it be far more proactive than sitting on here complaining? Yes, with 100% certainty. You don't like something? Step up and change it.

Sour grapes?
Firstly, I'm not a member of the VPS and not familiar with its politics. ... The fact of the matter is that a majority elected a president in accordance to bylaws, and that should be respected. For a vice-president to resign seems like a lack of commitment and a betrayal to the membership that elected her. If people aren't happy, change the bylaws and if they can't, they should accept that. The community is a very diverse one and that makes the job more difficult. ... If somebody wants to criticize their leader, then they can run for that position. And if they can't garner the votes, then maybe they're not qualified? With regard to votes for organizations, I suppose those representatives will have to answer for how they voted. They do represent a larger group of people. But if it's a for-profit organization, then there would be an apparent conflict of interest. ... Being from Vancouver Island, I very much appreciate the amount of outreach to the outlying communities. It's time they pulled their own weight and formed their own organizations like recently in New Westminster. It's a new concept and one that was worthy of a concerted initial effort. Having prides all over BC only helps to strengthen acceptance, both socially and financially. ... Change can be scary but it is inevitable. I think Ken's global perspective is a healthy one. Certainly having a surplus is an achievement given past history and I'm surprised it didn't drop even more with the current economic realities. Having been part of the Vancouver LGBTQ community since 1987, I don't even know who the previous presidents were. But I've seen and met Ken at various public events and protests, and that says something. ... But those who have decided to leave ... it just seems to me like sour grapes?

Ken won by two votes. He, his bf, and his business partner had fives votes amongst them...they cheated to get extra votes and he still only barely made it. As for sour grapes? I don't think so. Only three people that have worked with him in the past are willing to work with him again. I think that sends a clear message about his leadership. He has made Pride about him and he can only convince one person a year that he is a good leader. That says a lot. It's nice that you're willing to be unbiased and consider that the other side is acting out against Ken but you should be more willing to see that those same actions can also speak towards Ken's ability to be a leader. Being out and about, shaking hands and kissing babies is cool...but that doesn't make you a good President, and that doesn't make you a good leader. It just means you're in the spotlight, and likely delegating your responsibilities onto others who've probably grown fed up with covering for you when your image risks damaging the image of the VPS.

I am sorry to say but you do not have your facts straight. There was absolutely no cheating, it is called democracy. and so you can be informed, here is the truth. 1. Yes Ken did have a vote, so did Chrissy and so did Ray. 2. No, Ken's BF did not have a vote as he is not a member of VPS, just a volunteer. However both Chrissy's and Ray's significant others both had votes, so did they cheat? 3. Yes, Ken's business partner had three votes. He is an individual member and was representing two community organizations. He has been around the community for years and actually was a board member at one point. I hope this helps set straight some of the many innacuracies being shared.

Is Matthew spelled K-E-N?
Sounds like this random community member knows everything about Ken, his business partner, and even his new boy toy. So you're either Ken or Ken's friend, helping him "correct" the info going around with his delusional story. I wonder if Ken's drug and alcohol tainted perspective will ever come out on DVD so we can all see what's really going on in his head. BTW Ken keeps saying that Pride is not just about one person...so why did he run, knowing everyone on the executive and most of the board would step down if he won? And why is he still holding on with a crippled board filled with seat warmers? Food for thought.

The two so-called community organizations 'Matthew' lists are actually owned by Ken Coolen and Dean Nelson. Ken got pride memberships for them so he would control more votes at the AGM. He used dirty tricks to buy the election. That is not 'community' support. Pride board now is spineless brainless toothless.

Warning to new Board: Just wait until Ken throws ANOTHER hissy fit, and stomps out of a well attended public event when things don't go "according to his agenda". That's his modus operandi, and it leaves other VPS members cringing, and trying to eleviate the problems and embarrassment he causes. Good Luck, you will need it...

Kent's response to questions about leadership and corruption was "the membership elected me." so basically it's okay that he's corrupt and has leadership problems AS NOTED BY THE RESIGNATION OF THE ENTIRE BOARD.

Lied
Ken approached me before the AGM saying the problems with VPS were the people challenging him. He then kept explaining all of the bad, horrible things they did. This at first made me question, "what sort of leader talks trash about his opponents, especially in the queer community?" I admit that I did vote for Ken, but if given a second chance I would not. He betrayed my trust. The problems in the organization were not his opponents, but himself and his selfish, megalomaniac attitude. He betrayed my trust, using access to confidential membership lists to contact me, campaign and lie. Is this really what a leader does? Is this really the actions of a leader? Absolutely not. Now we are stuck with Ken for another three years, with his hissy fits, his bullying tactics. He is often seen yelling, berating and bullying staff, volunteers and other board members. For his abuse of power I will be filing a complaint about his use of my PRIVATE information for this pathetic attempt to make Pride about Ken. If anyone else received similar contact by ken or his supporters let me know so we can file an official complaint against him. This is beyond ridiculous and shows how harmful and how he fragments the community.

Hope
It sounds to me like the former officials of the society didn't want to get into political mudslinging on someone they respect as the leader and their friend. Whatever disagreements they may have had, Ken did not have support of the majority of the board and that should stand as a statement to the rest of the society about his leadership, good or bad. At the AGM none of the officials went on to slander, or denounce Ken's nomination or candidacy for a second term which is a fair and kind gesture for him and everything he has done. But I think if there were issues they should have been made known as Ken has succeeded in winning a second term and will likely continue doing whatever it is he's done that upset so many respected board members. I'm not going to discuss the validity of Ken's winning the election but merely point out that the voters at the AGM were mislead to believe that their president had the backing of the board members. I find it inspiring that so many people were willing to step down to send this message to Mr. Coolen, and it's probably time he do so as well. He's got his hands in so many organizations that make positive changes in the community he could walk away from this and still be a great influence elsewhere.

more VPS propaganda
No member of the board has access to the membership list because it is tied into the accounting software? Does your treasurer not have access to the accounting system? And what about the Secretary who's in charge of the register of members? Perhaps you should check your facts first. Or perhaps in just one year, this man has got Pride by the balls and we should be even more worried because the weak President is being controlled by an uninformed GM.

It's been alleged by a couple people that Ken used the membership list to campaign for President. If this is the case, it would be a massive breach of trust and privacy. As a former director I can confirm that a copy of the membership list was kept on the office computer for anyone to access. I trust that Scott brought in some level of access control, but I am also certain that Ken has access to at least the list from last year from before Scott was hired. disapointed it's still going on...
I just read the distresing articles about Mr Coolen and his 'over the top ego' and wonder if his inappropriate sexual advances were cause for the board to resign. I myself have been victim to Ken's innapropriate touching and comments. His behaviour is sadly a stain on the good name of the Vancouver Pride Society. The President of an organization of this prominence should be someone for a gay youth like myself to look up to, not feel discomfort and threatened by. Lecherous behaviour like this is unacceptable, anywhere. Vancouver Pride deserves a leader we can all respect.

The VPS has become a joke
I'm so SICK and TIRED of heading about drama with the Vancouver Pride Society. These resigned board members are clearly not in it for the greater good of pride or of the community, they're only in it for their own self-serving interests. Newsflash - in workplaces, and in elected board situations like this, there's ALWAYS going to be people you don't enjoy working with - but that doesn't give you carte blanche to openly bitch and complain about it to the media. You don't like the direction the organization is going in - you LEAVE. You leave quietly and you certainly don't burn your bridges on the way out. The only people that do that are seething, cancerous individuals who probably had performance issues and bad attitudes in the first place. Think you can do it better - challenge the leadership. Last I checked, the presidency of the pride society was an elected position. My guess would be that none of these "board members" had the testicular fortitude to do so. That, or they knew they couldn't win. Clearly the VPS membership was behind the current president - and having known the current president in professional circles for many years, I know that his level of volunteerism, community organization, and his dedication to both is something most of us only wish we possessed. He's a fearless leader, challenges the status quo, and gets the job done - whether you like it or not. Vancouver Pride is doing better than it ever has. The last thing we need is a bunch of idiots tearing the community in two. I hope that other community organizations take notice and think twice when these resigned individuals want to get involved - cause this sort of childish bullshit could soon be contaminating your organization as well...

Brandon, maybe you missed the memo...
It wasn't one person. It was everyone. After Ken won by two votes, all but two people decided to join the board. The entire executive and 6 of the 8 director nominees stepped down. Oh and FYI he cheated and he still only won by two. So you're absolutely right to be angry. You're absolutely right that this has turned the VPS into a joke. And you're also right, this is some seriously childish bullshit. But consider this: if one person says you're fucking up...you can probably shrug it off. If two people say you're fucking up...maybe you should reflect on why. But if the vast majority of people surrounding you tell you you're fucking up, then shit son, you're probably fucking up. It is unfair and just plain wrong to attribute the success of Pride to just one man. All ideas, actions, and dollars spent, are decided by the majority vote of the board. Ken was one person. One sad person that the entire board covered for, for three years. Yes he was elected. So was everyone else that decided to leave after working with him. How many more good willed community members do we have to sacrifice on this board before we realize it's that damn man that's responsible? I'm pretty sure in his three years the count's in the mid 20's right now. Maybe another 20, Brandon?

@Brandon
Brandon, what evidence do you have that the former directors have any reason to do this other than the best interests of the community and Vancouver pride? If you have it, then state it. Like in any workplace, when someone's actions become disruptive, counter-productive and abusive, they will be fired. Contrary to what you say about the former directors 'going to the media', this was kept internal to pride for a long time as they tried to work it out. That didn't work. I challenge you to name one former director who went to the media before the AGM when it became open and obvious to everyone that there were major problems with Ken's leadership, or lack thereof. Rather than making general attacks against the former directors, please say how any of them have done anything wrong or harmed pride. The responsibility for this whole mess lies with one person. The vps membership was not behind him. Otherwise he would not have had to buy votes to win and even then the other two that he owned were all that he won by. Many people came up to us after the AGM said they would have changed their vote if they had known more. Now they will. I don't know where you get this 'fearless leader' phrase from but it certainly isn't the person we know. The job was done by volunteers, staff and board members, not one particular person. Many of us never got any motivation or encouragement from him. He might as well have not been there at all. His actual contribution was very small. He likes to be in front of the camera and in the limelight so maybe that is why you think he 'is' pride but that is nowhere near the truth. Far from being people to avoid, the ex-directors and people looking for a special general meeting have shown courage and resolve to do the right thing. Any organization would be lucky to have them.

So you believe what is going on with one of the communities main organizations is okay? Trying to change the channel doesn't take away the seriousness of the situation here. Until the air is cleared and there is some sort of investigation into voting procedure I say cut any and all funds or grants to this group including money to run the Pride Parade and such.
