Xtra box to return to Wellesley Station
TORONTO NEWS / TTC to implement licensing program for news vendors

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has backed down on plans to remove newspaper boxes from the entrances to all  its subway stations after staff from Xtra’s publishing company, Pink Triangle Press (PTP), and other newspaper publishers, convinced TTC officials that removing the boxes was an illegal encroachment on free expression in public spaces.

The TTC told PTP on Feb 16 that it was removing Xtra’s box from the area near the entrance to Wellesley Station in an effort to improve the appearance of the area. The Xtra box and several others were removed on Feb 16, but the TTC says it will return the box to its original location shortly.

“It’s a victory,” says PTP director of engagement Gareth Kirkby. “This happened largely due to the work of [TTC Chair] Adam Giambrone and his staff.”

Kirkby proposed that the TTC offer a system of licensing and standards that would require publishers to maintain their boxes in a state of good repair and cleanliness. A similar system is used in Vancouver’s Skytrain system, where PTP distributes Xtra’s Vancouver edition.

COMING HOME. The TTC says it plans to replace the Xtra newspaper box it removed from Wellesley Station.

The TTC is now creating such a licensing system.

TTC chief property development officer Domenic Garisto confirms that the boxes will be returned to Wellesley Station “imminently,” and that the TTC is “not removing other boxes until the licensing system is in place.”

The ability to distribute community media on public property is a vitally important charter right, Kirkby says.

“Minority communities are often the last to put boxes on the system,” he says. “It’s vitally important in a changing Toronto that the members of minority communities are able to have a conversation through their media in these public spaces.”

Too bad
Unlike Vancouver, Toronto allows and seems to even condone posters & handbills all over the place and glued to almost everything. Also in Toronto, businesses have little pressure from the city to remove graffiti from walls, sidewalks, windows, signs, and yes, newspaper boxes. Unfortunately, here in Toronto, people using garbage cans and recycling containers for their waste seems to be an option that some don't use nearly often enough. Most subway stations are very dirty. Wellesley station is among one of the worst as far as cleanliness, drug dealers hanging around, and petty crime incidents. I for one, applauded the TTC's decision on removing all newspaper boxes from the station's property. I never had much problem walking the 4 minutes over to Church Street to pick up an Xtra paper, or any other paper for that matter. With the TTC's budget for janitorial services in their system at near zero, I can see the day coming very soon, when the sight of dozens of discarded newspapers blowing around the platforms, stairwells, and station floors will once again become the norm. If the TTC won't keep their system clean, maybe the publishers of all these newspapers will provide cleaners(at no cost to TTC riders) to remove the discarded papers ? One last point about this issue. I completely support the freedom of the press (and speech for that matter). However, it is the 21st century where cellphones, laptops, and netbooks computers, allow most people to catch up on the 'news' almost everywhere one wants to. Maybe 'print media' is becoming a thing of the past as far as 'hard copy' goes.

wah wah wah
oh shut up Jeff! Fuck, all you do is bitch and whine. From what I gather from your ongoing postings to Xtra it sounds like you are new to Toronto. If you don't like our city that much, why don't you just move back to Vancouver. Or did you fuck up your life there as well?!

Thanks Kyle
Thanks Kyle for not only taking the time to read my comments, but actually respond directly to this one. Someone once told me that when someone lashes out in anger, they do so from a place of feeling that nobody likes or respects them. Do you like and respect yourself Kyle ? For the record, my comments for the most part were positive in nature, especially the one where I supported the TTC for the removal of all newspaper boxes (too bad they've felt they needed to backtrack on that one). Also my pointing out that technology is helping to hopefully cut down on ink and paper being used is probably a good thing in the long run. As for my comments on cleanliness through-out the city of Toronto and the TTC, the truth sometimes hurts Kyle ;)
