The freshest Canadian face in gay porn
FIRST PERSON / Ryan Russell dishes the dirt on his first-ever porn shoot

PARACHUTE CLUB. The freshest Canadian face in gay porn Ryan Russell discusses how that face ended up covered in piss, cum and sweat during a Titan shoot with Tyler Saint.
(titanmen.com)
“Why do these motherfuckers from faraway places keep friggin’ messaging me?” I grumble, seeing a new message to one of my (very) dirty internet profiles. I’m in Toronto. It’s not like I’m going to San Francisco any time soon so I won’t meet ’em.

Curiosity kills, though, and I open the stranger’s message anyway.

“My name’s Patrick and I work in casting with TitanMen.com. Is there any chance you’d be interested in modelling for us?”

Oh. My. Fucking. God. Me? A Titan porn shoot? You’re not screwing with me?

Some things I would literally trade my soul for. Maybe this one I won’t have to. But it’s not a decision I should rush. After no less than seven minutes of careful deliberation, I cast the die to make me the freshest Canadian face in gay porn.

I’m 29, the age most pornstars are lining up for Geritol and preparing for retirement, but clearly it’s my time to shine.

Am I crazy?

I’ve got a real job, making good money. My gig’s consistent, I’ve got healthcare, client parties, vacation and perks. Most importantly though, I’ve got respect.

On the flip side, I’ll get fucked by Tyler Saint. And get filmed by TitanMen in full-on, inglorious HD while it goes down. Decisions. Decisions. By my calculations, nine inches far outmeasures any cotton-candy promises of stability. Easy.

See, I’d been planning — for years — to get into the magical world of porn. You could ask most of my friends and they’d all tell you how bored they were of hearing me say, “I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna do porn. I don’t know how, but I’m gonna’ do it.” And it’s not like there was any shortage of opportunity. Since turning 17 I’ve been approached by six different studios. Despite temptation I’ve always turned down the opportunity because it had to be right.

Then along comes Titan and I know it is my last, best shot at industry penetration. So I say yes.

Titan arranges a shoot in San Francisco in six weeks. My schedule goes into overdrive as I spend every possible minute alternately in gyms or state-of-the-art tanning beds, beautifying to depths unknown. It pays off too. I’ve got nerves but at least I know I’ve done everything possible to make the scenes a success.

***

I step off the airplane and am whisked to the Titan apartments in downtown San Francisco. I can’t help but think I’m walking into the gay porn Big Brother house. The rules are simple: No guests, don’t make a mess. Mostly no guests. And to ensure strict respect of the rules, cameras on all exits. No problem. I’ll keep my dick in my pants — until told otherwise, anyway.

The apartments aren’t your everyday accommodation. The kitchen is stocked, not with food, but low-fat spreads (mostly expired), unidentifiable raw-food product and countless half-consumed feedbags of high-impact protein powder. Privacy isn’t a consideration either; the model suites are merely curtained-off rooms, if you’re lucky (or demure) enough to even get a privacy partition. Floor-to-ceiling mirrors adorn the modern loft-like walls, excepting a few gaps where kitschy retro porn posters remind me why I’m here. The bathroom is fully outfitted with a piped-in ShowerShot. A few days later I came back to find one of the other models obsessively cleaning the shower with this convenient and maneuverable enema nozzle’s high-pressure spray. Unsettling and hilarious.

My first stay at the apartments is short; only a few hours of relaxation before we head back to the airport to pick up model (and a personal porn hero) Tyler Saint. For real.

While looking around for Tyler in passenger pickup, I realize that I barely know what I’m looking for. Wondering if I’d even be able to recognize him fully clothed, my gaze locks on this hot, muscle-stud laughing away on his cellphone up ahead. Yep, it’s him alright.

Tyler hops in the back and a rush hits me as I come to terms with the reality that this friendly, deep-eyed and dark-skinned man is gonna be makin’ it with me in the morning. At this sexless moment, I love porn more than ever before.

We drive for about an hour, along a coastal highway that I’m pretty sure is from Basic Instinct, to a town outside San Francisco where we find the Titan ranch. Past the security gates and pulling up the driveway in the darkness, Patrick and Tyler trade stories about nosy neighbours, big mountain cats and the endless debauch that’s been committed here by studs in the past. The house itself is gorgeous and sprawling. No pool but acres of forest. Cabanas with outdoor showers surround the main house. I’m overwhelmed wandering through and imagining just how much hard-core fucking has gone down here.

I meet some of the cast of Titan’s wonderworks including directors/cinematographers Brian Mills (Funhouse, Bad Conduct and Flux) and Paul Wilde (Triage, Fist and Piss and Shock Treatment). Tyler and I horse around a bit to get comfortable. It’s late, though, and before long it’s time for a snack then off to bed. I wish I could sleep but the time shift is making me jumpy. Or maybe it’s ’cause I’m gonna be shooting porn in the morning? Fighting my way down, I finally doze off. Get your beauty sleep, man.

The shoot schedule goes like this: Wake up and eat for 7am, “hose off” at 8am and be ready to shoot for 9am. The meals on the ranch are expansive spreads, lovingly prepared by Wilde and full of the healthiest most nutritive things known to humankind.

This first scene with Tyler is for a flick called Folsom Maneuvers (Titan’s official release for the Folsom Street Fair this past September). It’s a full-on military scene. Tyler fucks the hell outta me while I’m strung up in parachute rigging, dangling from some heavy foliage, as if my chute got caught in the trees and I couldn’t get myself loose. But somehow my fatigues got lost on the way down. Air resistance, I guess?

Getting nailed in this improvised sling is the single hottest, hardest and best fuck I’ve known to date. Three hours later, I’m covered in piss, cum and sweat; Mills shouts, “Cut.” The scene ends and I can’t wait to do more. Though I am walking kinda funny.

The scenes with Tyler take about two full days to shoot before he disappears into the night. New hottie, recent TitanMen exclusive JR Matthews, returns in his place. JR is a muscle-twink strawberry blond who’s got a massive dick, still more massive shoulders and can be coerced into self-sucking on command.

For my scene with JR we’re both bottoming with some pretty heavy toys: unsurprisingly on-brand Titan Tools (“toys are for boys, tools are for men”). This one’s gonna be called, fittingly, Toolbox when it’s released early in 2010 and, among other things, we plow each other with vibrating nightsticks and a double-ended monster. The scene culminates with me working JR’s ass while he sucks himself to completion. Seriously, I get paid for this?

But things aren’t all fun and games on set. These are outdoor scenes and the weather isn’t fully cooperative. Despite looking like it’s a blazing summer day, we’re hemmed in with massive heaters just out of frame. Keeping raging hard-ons in the cool is tough stuff but being able to fuck around with the likes of JR and Tyler in between shots makes the going a touch easier.

The single biggest hard-on killer, however, comes just as we’re taking the first couple of still photographs for Toolbox. Totally unannounced, a real estate agent shows up with an older married couple who are there to see about buying the property (the Titan ranch is moving from San Fran to Palm Springs next year). Quick! Hide! Or at least put on some pants so we’re not just wearing boots and boners!

As the trio, who probably have about half a millennium among them, approach the house, I remember that I’ve left some of the tools all over a bed inside. Charging down the hill from the cabanas where we’re shooting, cordially greeting and passing our guests on the way in, I slip ahead and hide all the black rubber strewn about. Our hard-ons last just long enough to be awkward for the entire duration of the prospectors’ visit so JR and I can hurriedly pump ourselves back up when they leave and it’s finally time to start shooting again. It’s all about timing, really.

A few hours of assplay and fucking later, I’m chilling with some of the coolest homos around. That night Mills and I sit around watching American Beauty, laughing hysterically as Peter Gallagher pounds Annette Bening and asks, “You like getting nailed by the King?” before she screams, “Oh, yes, I Iove it! Fuck me, your majesty!” I suddenly know exactly how she feels.

It’s these magical moments that I’ll cherish forever. And, of course, the intensive, hours-and-hours-long poundings with monster cocks.

What a moron...
I have no respect for gay men in the sex industry. They are disposable trash that probably won't live to see age 40. Why glorify these moron gays in porn or the party scene? Why not an article on a gay scientist, teacher, doctor, etc...? People already think of gay men as fools and degenerates...this article adds fuel to fire. Beauty fades...stupid is forever.

Cover story narcissistic voyeurism
This is the most self serving cover story I have ever read in xtra. I mean do we really care Ryan whether you get off having hot sex for money with fellow porn stars or make a pile of money making porn? I mean good luck fucking your way to "success" & "happiness" in this world. But this front page coverage is self indulgence, materialism, narcissism and hedonism gone to an extreme and I am no prude. No role model here. Is this what gay life has come to in the 21st century? What's next, "fresh faces" getting fucked by muscle queens live on xtra online? That would be "setting love free" quite literally but I am not sure that what was originally meant by the masthead slogan for xtra. Or is it? And is doing it professionally for money with whoever you are asked to do it with something to be celebrated? In my humble opinion this is was a back page story at best....

Sorry James....
James, that is a typical yet misguided response. Xtra profiles all kinds of people in the arts and entertainment scene. Last issue they featured Nina Arsenault's work in theatre, and have previously given cover space to authors, actors, dancers - all people from our community who are doing amazing things to showcase our lives and experiences as they really are. Were those self-serving, inappropriate covers, which should have been likewise relegated to a back story at best? Not at all, in my opinion. Clearly the difference for you is that he fucks for a living, rather than standing on a stage - so he ought not to be discussing or promoting his work as others do. But I'll bet more people watch porn than attend the theatre, and sex - whether watching it or having it, is an essential, wonderful part of our community and our identity as queers. Why shouldn't it be an Xtra cover story? Porn is still viewed, obviously, as shameful, which is a shame.

I am many things but not "typically misguided". (maybe eccentrically misguided?) The other covers stories you refer to were by journalists profiling artists and not in the first person. I read them all and while most were promotional the subjects were distilled by a reporter or journalist. This is what I meant by narcissism and materialism engulfing all in the gay world. Success in the porn world is based on size of dick, youth, physical appearance and little more (perhaps minimal acting skills..). So is gay porn now art just like literature, theatre, dance and cinema? There were some great stripper artists in the past--e.g Josephine Baker. But I don;t think this was meant to be about art but about a very narcissistic and materialistic process that in my view should not be celebrated by a cover in an important gay publication like xtra (news and journalism) which I have written over 50 stories for myself in the past few years. That is all I meant. There is important art being done (plays, books, dance etc) that are not getting such premiere coverage and perhaps have more redeeming social value? And by the way we have a very good porn producer right here in Canada--Goodhandy's in Toronto (And many in Montreal) --that get pretty good regular coverage (As they should get) in xtra and fab.

Agreeing to disagree...
The reason I love xtra is because it provides gay and lesbian people a mass media in which to see their actual lives reflected to them. not a sanitized, cleaned up version. not just the versions that we all agree have artistic merit. for this particular guy (and no doubt countless other men in our community) porn is a very large, very real part of their experience. xtra shouldn't speak to them, i assume, because their work is different than ours? because it isn't serious journalism? because they enjoy or do things differently than you or i might? i'm not comfortable drawing the line about who's experience is worthy of profiling, and who's should be relegated to the back pages, if at all. to my mind it is judgment like that, not narcissism that is negatively effecting the gay community... if this had been a first person account of someone's experience getting married, coming out, adopting a child etc instead of fulfilling a dream to star in a porn - would your objection have been as strong? xtra does journalism, yes - but it also affords countless freelancers the opportunity to discuss their own, first person experiences around innumerable issues.... and i'm sure many readers relate. i've read a million pieces in xtra about different life experiences that vary incredibly from my own, things i wouldn't want to do or be involved in, but i love understanding how other people in our community experience the world, what they do and how they feel about it. if we take out the fucking and the porn, what's next? no more talk of baths? cruising? again, where is the line drawn and who gets to draw it?

I agree Ryan has a very gay story
ell said will and I agreee with most of what you said. I see nothing wrong in the story--it is just that a cover story it isn't for me-.. I covered the murder of Janko (legendary Barn owner_) and that never came close to the cover story and that was a big story and big news. It is all about proportion. I sometimes watch porn, go to Goddhandy's, have sex, even have used hustlers (loved the old hustler bar Sneakers),/ To me this is a different line--the line between light, sexy. young "fab"style magizine--who have porn guys on the cover (e.g Pierre Fitch whom I know from Montreal ) and often just handsome models--and xtra which is usually a tad more on the high brow artsy side and newsy side. That's all. But I agree Ryan's story is worth telling. Just not the cover story. Enough said. cheers..james

That is "Well said Will..."
That should be "Well said Will..." (I was on the phone while typing)..I think we agree on quite a bit. And I have nothing against porn or porn stars (new ones, old ones)... and I have an old porn collection going back some decades. It was just about the cover story. But yes porn is a big part of life for many (smaller for me these days) and should be "covered" as a part of LGBT life (as is hustling and prostitution). But this was more of a 'fab" type cover story for me (which of course PTP owns now). But hey they did decide to it as a cover story. I only hope the powers that be at xtra don't do emerging porn star cover stories regularly -which is very unlikely. I prefer "news" cover stories (e.g. I would have put Chris Skinner's tragic murder on the main cover two weeks ago not NIna) which alas are few and far between.

News versus trivia
I would have realizing that Canadian gays are remotely aware of hate crimes happening today in Mexico, Peurto Rico and Brazil. For example, did you know that a 19 year old gay guy had both arms and both legs cut off before he was beheaded and his torso cut in half and set on fire by a 26 year old hetero-sicko who had served time in prison for domestic violence? None of our business? I would just as soon make that my business than knowing about the ins and outs of the porn industry. And then there's Iran, Iraq, India, Uganda, etc., etc., etc. Who does Xtra cater to anyway?

Inappropriate cover
Incredible that Xtra would put such a photo on the front page. If I had kids, I would not want them to see such a photo if they were walking by an Xtra box. My local library has Xtra in the front foyer, people should not have to look at something like this. (I am no prude, I'm going to look up some more pictures of this guy on Titan and maybe rent the movie). I remember years ago getting angry reading about people who tried to get Xtra taken out of the library and community centres entrances because it was a gay publication. Today, if they had a petition to sign to get rid of it, I'd sign it.

nothing article
The worst thing about this article is that it doesn't really tell us very much except that Ryan is "star-struck" and likes sex. Big deal. Are we supposed to be impressed because he has been offered such jobs since he was 17? "Getting ready" means pumping iron in a gym and tanning? Wow... what talent! The problem with most porn is that the "stars" all look alike. One perfect steroid-laden beefy body after another...yawn. Some of the hottest I have ever seen were with scrawny kids with no muscles at all. This guy Ryan should get over himself...

Xtra, what happened?
I remember Xtra magazine being about gay and lesbian artists, writers, musicians and actors, I remember xtra being about causes of importance to the gay community. there were articles about gay bashing, hiv, gay and lesbian business owners, reviews of gay-focused plays and so on. It was a community paper that anyone - of any age - could pick up and i never missed an issue. Now all it takes to get on the cover is to be a Canadian who made it "big" in porn? Really? The cover shot is a naked man with an erection covered barely by a big letter T...and then there's the fully-naked-with-an-erection shot. don't get me wrong, it's a hot picture, but completely inappropriate considering not everyone who reads Xtra is over 18...or wants to see that. I read the article - no offense, but there are a hundred gay blogs out there that can give you the same information - it's like Xtra!'s going for the lowest common denominator in a desperate effort to cease from disappearing into the annals of gay history. Sad.

Sad.
Yet another Xtra cover completely concerned with sex. Tell me it ain't so ! When is Xtra (and many other gay media for that matter) going to grow up and mature ? Is being gay only about cocks, cunts & sex ? Personally, I'd like to see a cover story from Xtra that was positive in nature about something like the economy, health, non-sexual entertainment, etc, etc. It ALWAYS seems that there's something SEXUAL (and often graphic) leading on the newspaper's front page. Are we as gay people that shallow ? this one-dimensional ? this one-track minded ? Does everything we are as (gay) human beings come to to sexuality ? Down to an orgasm / getting off ? cock size ? how many times you can come on a week-end ? VERY sad.

Is Ryan's tale all a cock & bull story?
Re-reading the over the top Ryan Russell first person thrilling first porn shoot gusher I am beginning to think the whole thing is a cock and bull story to evoke some of the anti-sex and/or sex is all responses it has. If it is some sort of satiric take on gay "porn life" it might have a better rationale its appearance on the cover with its breathless unreal first person account of porn sexual exploits. Some say gay life is just about sex--to a degree it is by definition (though I would think realtionships might figure in there--but it is about sex in the real world (more or less)--everyday sex--not "sex" under the lights which is as unreal as most "reality tv". (Again Goodhandy's right here in Toronto on Wednesday nights covers that fantasy porn sex scene well enough without going all the way to Hollywood to illustrated the point. But if it is just a cock and bull story than the silly unreal sex under a theatrical setting of a stage and under hot lights (usually a sign of actors at work) gushingly celebrated by "Ryan" is more understandable. The profound response above that "everything we do as gay human beings is about an orgasm, getting off" (no matter how unreal that getting off is) is about the right response to the Ryan cock and bull story. Outrageously simple--any kind of gay sex IS gay life. Period. BTW is Ryan available for an evening at reasonable rates?

Pro-porn, pro-sex, pro-sex work, but...
Sex is great, sexual expression is great, the ability to trade in sex as work is a right to be validated and confirmed. And Russell is an entertaining, talented writer. All that said, it is dubious to trumpet this article as a pinnacle of PTP/Xtra's political mandate. No offense to Ryan, genuinely good for you -- but there is nothing especially radical or transgressive about the fact that a young, slim, well-hung white male has broken into porn. Even the Canadian angle is not a first. So seriously, on one hand this cover story is great for Russell's career for sure, and it is also great for Xtra's circulation stats - but to pretend that this is overtly political or realistically in line with Xtra's political mandate? You have to jump through a lot of hoops to imagine that is a credible argument. And a few anti-sex comments in response does not indicate a dire need for education and activism on porn in our communities - let's not pretend otherwise.

Sexuality is not political now?
Canadian border guards are seizing LGBT films at the border, Adam Lambert's sexualized performance is censored on ABC... there are countless current examples of the mainstream demonstrating that they are still terrified of gay male sexuality. not of gay men as overtly anymore possibly, but definitely of gay sexuality. and unless we are all willing to get married and be nice well behaved queers, they will remain so unless we normalize images, stories, and examples of gay men leading happily, unapologetically sexual lives. this means telling their stories, showing their images, and yes - seeing them on the covers of OUR media. to be an openly sexual gay man who is not ashamed, who does not hide or obscure the details of his sexual existence is still truly a defiant act in our society. don't be lulled into apathy by believing otherwise.

Fail better
Will: The point is not that sexuality is not political. It is that sexual politics are complex and sexual identities are complex and it would be great if our strategies reflected that. And no, a skinny white guy on the cover of Xtra is good but not good enough. I want a naked guy in a wheelchair. I want someone who isn't white. I was images and stories that have more to offer than mainstream porn. I don't want a puff piece on mainstream gay porn. That in itself is NOT political. Or at least, it is definitely not political enough. I want more.
