Student threatened with 'disciplinary action' if GSA advocacy continues
TORONTO NEWS / Gay-straight alliances forbidden in all Catholic schools: principal
Andrea Houston / Toronto / Thursday, September 01, 2011

Leanne Iskander has been blocked from starting an “LGBT support group” at her school and told that if she continues to advocate for gay-straight alliances she will face “disciplinary action.”

Iskander, the founder of Catholic Students for GSAs (CS4GSA), and her parents were summoned for a meeting with St Joseph Catholic Secondary School principal Jeff Quenneville on Sept 1 to discuss her latest proposal for a GSA, Iskander says. The principal told her unequivocally that “an LGBT support group or GSA will never be permitted in any Catholic school because the bishops forbid them.”

“I was told a gay-straight alliance will never happen,” she says. “We are allowed to have a group called ‘Open Arms,’ a general equity group, nothing specific to LGBT. And he said it will not be student-run, either.”

Quenneville then threatened Iskander, she says, telling her she will face “disciplinary action” if she continues to promote and advocate for GSAs at her Mississauga school.

The principal went on to say that “Catholic schools are not permitted to allow LGBT-specific groups because the bishops forbid them, so none of the schools are allowed.”

Iskander is now looking at legal action and is speaking to a lawyer. “We are obviously not going to compromise any more. They aren’t going to move.”

In June, Premier Dalton McGuinty promised, via MPP Glen Murray, that students would be allowed to start queer support groups in September, and that students would lead the way on all decisions.

Murray could not be reached for comment.

Queer Ontario’s Casey Oraa tells Xtra he is very disappointed but not surprised. “It’s obvious the Catholic board and the Liberal government have no interest in bettering the lives of LGBT youth. There’s no commitment.”

“In the upcoming provincial election, vote with your conscience. This issue should be shaping how you vote,” Oraa says. “The current government promised LGBT support groups would be allowed in all Ontario schools. This is not happening. It’s a systemic problem and it’s not going away.”

Noa Mendelsohn Aviv, the director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association's equality program, says she is “shocked, disturbed and appalled” at the principal’s decision.

“[The Catholic school board] is now openly declaring a ban on GSAs, LGBT support groups and even anti-homophobia groups, it now sounds like,” she says. “I am devastated that these students would have to fight for what is their due. They have a constitutional right to associate and express themselves.”

“It is not reasonable or acceptable to ban GSAs. I am very upset by this news. On a personal level this is like a punch in the gut.”

It wasn’t just Iskander who faced a threat on Sept 1 from the St Joe's principal. A teacher at the school who asked to remain anonymous to protect his job says Quenneville had a clear message to staff about GSAs: “The principal said, ‘Our job is Catholicism first, curriculum second. The secular world may look at our beliefs and say we are bigots, but it is our beliefs and they are protected.’”

The teacher says Quenneville also made it clear that "if you didn't agree, then find another job."

The battle for GSAs began in January when the Halton Catholic District School Board banned the groups, which are stipulated as requirements by the Ministry of Education in its equity policy.

Roman Catholic schools have repeatedly denied students’ requests for GSAs, saying supports are already in place and church doctrine condemns gay sex as “sinful and immoral.” One example of the “supports” given to gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans students is the community group Courage International, an organization that claims to “cure gays.”

In March, Iskander and the St Joe’s GSA were blocked from forming any group with the word gay in the title.

This summer, a letter from a priest representing Toronto’s Coptic Christian community threatened to pull thousands of students from Toronto Catholic District School Board classrooms if homosexuality is taught in schools in any way.

On Aug 31, at a meeting packed with anti-gay parents, clergy and community members, the TCDSB passed amendments that put Catholic “denominational rights above human rights.”

Enough
Let's face reality. The Bishops will never entertain an Equity Policy for LGBT students. The Premier and other leaders are useless. They don't care to help. Great timing for the election though! Rally: September 18th on the lawn of Queens Park, 1:30PM. We must stand up for the rights of these students.

Disappointing
I have personally had that principal as a drama teacher in the past, and reading this made me really think just how limited school administration officials can be in their positions. I always perceived him to be very gay-friendly and LGBT supportive, so I can imagine he'd have his hands tied behind his back by school board policy when dealing with the issue and telling that student. I can understand that, but by the same token, he loses quite a bit of respect.

No! No! NO! Public funding of TCDSB must end.
With this most recent, unambiguous position statement, the time has come to seriously (and aggressively) review public funding of Catholic School Boards everywhere. If they persist in managing their affairs like a PRIVATE CLUB, then they MUST take responsibility for attracting PRIVATE funding. The general tax-paying public (secular, multi-cultural, multi-denominational) must NOT financially support this outrageous position. Let the bishops petition the Pope to fund their hateful, unhealthy agenda. Our tax dollars must not continue to be used to enable this appalling situation.

The Bible Dosn't Have a Dress Code
Here is a great chance for the trans community to help the GLB side. The bible says nothing about clothing. If male students start waring female school uniforms as a protest, the Catholic church can not demand they wear pants while telling girls they can wear skirts. If they try, file a sexual discrimination suit against the Catholic School Board. This protest is based on expression of gender, not gay rights, but I think they will get the message very quickly, not to mention some big time press coverage.

write to your MPPs and other candidates
I encourage everyone to not only email their current MPPs about this issue but to also email candidates from different parties to see where they stand on allowing GSAs in Catholic schools or defunding Catholic schools altogether. Its simply unacceptable to me that unelected bishops should have any say over any public institution such as Catholic schools. I also find it perverse that they should flaunt their denial of their students' Charter rights so openly. We can no longer tolerate publicly funded Catholic schools run by unelected and unaccountable bishops. Either the education ministry is in charge or the schools become private and all funding stopped. Let the Catholic schools keep the assets they had when full funding was announced but any assets built with public money must remain public and not be allowed to be used by private Catholic schools. If enough people email their MPPs and candidates we can make this an election issue.

Keep up the fight
Who cares if she has to face disciplinary actions. What will they do, expel her? She'd be better off at a public school not a Catholic school. I say she should keep up the fight.

Feeling Ill
As an educator, I feel ill that the Catholic school system would trample on the rights on their students by not allowing GSA's. In the public system, paid for my public funds they must either be non-discriminatory and allow GSA's or walk away from the public system. Maybe now is the time for the de-funding of the Catholic school system.

Hmmmm.....
I agree that the Catholic School System shouldn't be publicly funded. Most people agree that the funding of Catholic schools is based on reasoning that has no legal relevance anymore. A large reason why they are still funded is purely because of practicality, simplicity, it'd be expensive/a pain to shut down, etc... But keeping that in mind...the principal is right. Homosexuality, is against Catholicism, so it makes sense that the higher ups wouldn't want a GSA in a Catholic school. Nobody goes to a Muslim or a Jewish school and demands bacon be served in the cafeteria. Everyone rolls their eyes dismissively at the idea of teaching creationism in public schools. How is this any different? There's a Peel District Public school a few blocks down from St. Joe's. If you want a GSA go to public school. The same way if I want to be taught that condoms are bad, I go to Catholic school. That's the point of having two separate school systems.

@ Laurie
Although your comment makes logical sense in my brain, it still makes me very angry. I don't know how much say you had when you were growing up but I went to school where my parents sent me. So if I had catholic parents who decided that I was to a catholic school why should I be punished and be bullied without a support group. Did you think about that before you wrote your comment? I personally don't want to see 1 more queer teen/young adult commit suicide. I don't care if we break down catholicism to do that. Religion is not more important than lives, especially young lives that haven't had the chance to really experience much of their life. If the catholic system does not want a GSA how can we trust them that appropriate action would be taken when a queer student is bullied. The answer: we can't.

'Courage' group doesn't claim to cure gays
As said in the title, the Catholic group Courage does not, to my knowledge, try to 'cure' gays of their same-sex attractions. Does anyone have proof that they do? I am happily corrected, if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

For those claiming that Courage does not cure gays
It is clear that they try to cure gay people the same way that A.A trys to cure alcoholics. http://www.couragerc.org/Twelve_Steps_of_Courage.html Courage international has extended to groups such as Courage Latino, which claim to cure gays. http://www.banderasnews.com/0507/nr-couragelatino.htm http://thewildreed.blogspot.com/2009/11/gay-catholics-courage-apostolate-and.html I don't know if Courage has ever stated to reform gays, but it is clearly what they try to do. http://thewildreed.blogspot.com/2009/08/holding-courage-apostolate-accountable.html

If Gay Catholic students got married
If Gay Catholic students got married, how would the Catholic School Board handle the Federal legalities of Same Sex Marriage? Marriage trumps religion. If 2 lesbian Catholic students, or 2 Gay boys Catholic students got legally married to eachother, how would the Catholic School Board handle that or explain it away? It is legal to marry in Ontario at age 18, or age 16 with both parent's permissions. If any 2 Gay boys or Lesbian Catholic School Board students happened to be in love, or close enough, and would want to marry... That might create a perfect test case to challenge the Catholic Board Dogma vs the Legalities of Same Sex Marriage :-)

Corrections
I just want to make note of a few important corrections "Homosexuality, is against Catholicism..." Laurie, Mississauga Actually, Catholicism is against homosexuality. This changes your argument entirely. To compare eating bacon with emotions is very weak argument. "?..the same way that AA tries to cure alcoholics..." Christopher Mckerracher, Mississauga The fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous does not try to cure alcoholics. This fact completely weakens your statement.

Courage con't
Thanks for the links, Christopher. I could not open the one with 'courage latino' in the address, but I read over the others carefully. While there are legitimate concerns that Courage does not distance itself from 'reparative therapy' groups, Courage itself does not seem to promote that route. I don't believe that AA tries to cure alcoholics, but helps them stay sober.

Courage con't again (@RGB)
Also, while it seems that Courage themselves won't claim to be able to "cure" gays, members of the group do believe this. The chaplain of the local Courage chapter, the Rev. James Livingston, was out of town Monday and unavailable to comment. In explaining the programs, the archdiocese’s website contains links to material that some gays find objectionable. That includes a Q&A with the director of Courage’s national office, the Rev. Paul Check, in which he says, “People are relieved to know the condition [of homosexuality] is both treatable and preventable.” Source: http://thewildreed.blogspot.com/2009/11/gay-catholics-courage-apostolate-and.html

Youth Need Our Support
With respect to the comment "who cares if she is expelled", while some of us may feel these students would be "better off" at a public school, this is clearly not what the students themselves want. They want to be able to be with their friends, have continuity of schooling, and be supported. And that's their prerogative. I attended Catholic school in the days when young women who became pregnant were expelled. That changed. The stance on GSAs needs to change as well. I have seen first-hand the suffering that queer students at Catholic schools face. It is unjust and it must stop.

Complete disappointment
I am a student attending St Joseph Secondary School, and to be honest I am completely against Mr Quennville's decision and his actions on this whole thing. The bible does speak about gay sex being against God's wishes. However the Bible also says the Lord loves his children unconditionally, no matter male or female, no matter the culture, sexual orientation. He loves his children and want them to be happy either way. It is not one of the ten commandments that if we are gay lesbian bisexual or a transgender it is a sin. It does not say that. It wouldn't kill the catholic school board to help their students in anyway they can, having a GSA in our school has benefitted all the students in it including the straight ones, Including myself. I am a straight person who support every student in the Gay Straight Alliances. It is wrong on Mr Quenneville's part to put his staff in that position of basically not allowing the teachers who support the GSA to voice it and help their students. I'm so disappointed that he's done that. Mrs Jaques did what she could to support her students and it was because of her that our GSA was formed. I really hope there is a change and I'll be beside Leanne and other GSA members to make sure the student rights are there .

Understanding
we have to understand that yes, it is kind of against the catholic religion to be gay. This isnt the first time ST Joseph has been in the paper because of this GSA. From my understanding, the first principle wanted this for the students. Now Quenneville can do this for his student he just doesn't want to help them. Yes the curriculum does come first, but shouldn't the comfortableness of the students fall shortly after that? it's a way of keeping the catholicism alive if they fulfill the needs of the students . The lgbt students do need help with finding who they are cause they are still young. Also from my understanding of what this GSA thing is because of how much controversy there's been over it. The GSA is good for students to help them connect with themselves and others and not feel outcasted and as of it's wrong that they are interested in the same sex. It's not wrong if it's who you are. Teenagers are still discovering themselves so therefore they do need somewhere to go and talk.

No, I'm not Catholic, & don't trust any religion. It's their school, they make the rules. Don't like it? LEAVE! I'm so sick of hearing this crap. Just like who knows how many other issues over the past 50 years, they call it 'equal rights'. I call it what it is, 'special rights'. Do the rest of us a huge favour, SHUT THE HELL UP!!! Nothing but a bunch of bloody whiners! School's a place to learn(at least it use to be), not your own private social club. It's damn lucky for you that the taxpayers can't withhold there money, then you'd have a REAL reason to whine! You want your own private club? Get an education, get a job, & buy it yourselves! re: Gay-straight alliance for muslims students
Christina there's absolutely no reason why there can't be a GSA at a school that also allows Muslims to pray on Fridays, however the school in question is a grade school and I do not believe there are any GSAs in grade schools, to be honest I think it wouldn't be much needed in schools where the students haven't yet reached puberty anyways. There is a huge difference between allowing Muslims to pray inside a public school in services that are totally optional and outside class time as opposed to the Catholic school system which is allowed to discriminate in its hiring in spite of being a public institution and which has been denying their students' Charter rights. No one is being discriminated against by allowing Muslims to pray inside a public school in a totally optional service outside of class time. However many are being discriminated against, not just LGBTQ students but staff and teachers who must prove they're practicing Catholics before being hired by the Catholic school system which receives public funding to promote one religious belief. In spite of Catholic school boards being a state agent and therefore subject to the Charter of Rights they regularly violate the Charter rights of their students and those of potential new teachers. The public school system, which embraces GSAs and makes allowances for students of different religions, including allowing Muslim students to pray in the schools optionally and outside class time on Fridays, the Muslim holy day, does not discriminate against anyone. The same is not true of the Catholic public school system in Ontario and that is why people are targeting them. The Toronto public school board regularly makes concessions for students of various religions, allowing Muslim students the option of attending prayers on Fridays outside of class time is no different and doesn't discriminate against anyone.

As appealing as it is to take this issue and use it as a reason to vote anyone other than McGuinty this October, don't be fooled into thinking the other constituents will represent the LGBTQetc. community anymore assertively. GSA's in schools
Despite what the Toronto District BOARD has said, how many TDSB schools actually have GSA groups active in them? Also, before the Government stops funding Catholic schools someone should do a study of all the inmates in Ontario prisons and find out what percentage attended Catholic schools vs percentage which attended TDSB schools. This whole issue is about encouraging persons under 18 years of age to "come out". Many persons don't even know what they are until much later. Of all the problems we have in this society, I find the energy that activists are focusing on this issue quite disappointing. They are just picking on the weakling(the TCDSB).
