Sissy Stroll highlights Toronto's gay past and troubled present
NEWS / Occupy Toronto activists want more queer involvement
Katie Toth / Toronto / Monday, November 14, 2011

Queer activists and their allies from the Occupy Toronto camp left their tents for a few hours on Nov 13 to march through the city and gaze at some of its most famous gay historic sites.

The Sissy Stroll was organized by the queer contingent of Occupy Toronto, called Occupy the Rainbow, and was meant to encourage other Toronto gays and lesbians to join the camp in St James Park.

However, on Nov 14, Mayor Rob Ford told media he wants protesters out of the park as soon as possible.

The weekend tour blended fact and fiction and was facilitated by local gay activist Roy Mitchell.

At one point Mitchell stopped near the Hard Rock Café to discuss safety issues in historical Yonge St gay bars. He also joked about Anne Murray “discovering her sexuality as she helped kd lang string her first guitar.”
Speaker Roy Mitchell says Canadian gays and lesbians need to interrogate their history.
(Katie Toth)

Mitchell says the city’s queer roots are deeper than most young gays and lesbians realize.

Stopping at the bronze statue of Alexander Wood on the corner of Church and Alexander streets, Mitchell relayed the story of the famous “poofster.”

Wood, a colonial merchant from Scotland who later became a magistrate, settled in Toronto in 1797 and later bought 25 acres of wilderness just northeast of where Yonge and Carlton meet today.

Wood became embroiled in a sex scandal in 1810. He was accused of asking soldiers to strip so he could inspect their genitalia after a woman claimed she had been raped by a soldier and left a scar on his penis.

The rumours about Wood became so humiliating that he fled to Scotland only to later return to Toronto and once again become one of the city’s most respected public figures. Wood later returned to Scotland, where he died in 1844.

Mitchell disagrees with Toronto’s glorification of Wood.

“The BIA and the Church St community decided we need this icon, so they got Alexander Wood, this colonial magistrate, to stand up as this sort of radical image of gayness,” he says. “We’re just reclaiming fake history. He’s a . . . colonialist who was a perv. Maybe it’s like trying to look for heroes in the past when all he wanted to do was look at soldiers’ dicks.”

Frank George Hull led parts of the march, waving a pride flag as he drove his motorized wheelchair. Hull, who shared a poem about his lover’s death during the AIDS crisis, said he found the walk “peaceful.”
Walk facilitator Jordan Bond Gorr and participant Alissa England get ready to stroll.
(Katie Toth)

“I get to tell them my story,” he said. “This walk for me is a way of healing from my pain.”

But Mitchell doesn’t want to see history being repeated for no reason.

“Even though we’re looking at history and history has this modernist idea that it gets better, we have to rethink that and think how can we make it better,” he says.

The stroll returned to St James Park, where discussions of history turned to discussions of activism.

Kim Koyoma, an activist who attended the tour, said some of the issues resonated and reminded him of cutbacks in Toronto.

“We are under threat,” he says. “These issues affect all of us because we’re disproportionately affected by cuts to [public services].”

Occupy the Rainbow participants say they are planning more events, including “free school” discussions on queer theory and direct actions in support of the trans community.

NO! Mitchell is NOT a PERV
Mitchell dismisses Alexander Wood as a perv. Why is he talking about “Queer” history and using the word “perv” without compassion? He's obviously no historian. In 1810 being openly Gay was not yet fashionable. At that time all Gays were considered pervs and were closeted or jailed. It is that stunting scenario which throughout all ages created what Mitchell calls a “perv.” And why is Mitchell being so politically correct all of a sudden? Is he trying to appeal to Heterosexuals as the “good” Gay? Or is he hiding some past or present indiscretion out of guilt? But now we have to ask if he has always been sexually pure and angelic and boring and not a perv? Alternately, one wonders what “queer” “histories” Mitchell has left behind, or is no longer able to partake of? Sour grapes perhaps?

Inventing history and heroes
I think Pride Toronto board member Roy Mitchell is correct when he refers to the statue of Alexander Wood as being part of "fake history - trying to look for heroes in the past when all Alexander Wood wanted to do was look at soldiers’ dicks”. The LGBT community constantly attempts to find heroes that aren't that heroic. For example, consider the community awards given out annually at the time of Pride. Many of the people who have received the awards were only doing their paid jobs. For example at 2011 Pride, Michael Bach received the "person of the year" award and was named one of the grand marshals for the parade. Yet, Bach is employed by KPMG Canada to be their national director of diversity, inclusion and equity. His efforts in promoting the Pride at Work organization appear to simply be an extension of his paid job. See: http://www.thestar.com/news/pride/article/1017692--seeking-acceptance-not-tolerance Other community awards have also gone to people who are employed by organizations in the LGBT community and who also appear to have received an award for simply doing their paid job.

OH? Yeah!
OH, It's always delightful to see such a radical voice support the selection of the Business Improvement Association and bad art. I like to think of it this way - dude represents a colonial power, says a woman who was raped remembers that she scratched the rapists/attackers' penis and the colonial power uses his power to get the soldiers to drop their drawers so he can check their dicks. Radical. I believe their were people that could have been chosen for being pervs in a radical way. This is looking for a hero we don't need. And yes, I'm totally "trying to be a good gay and make heterosexuals like me." What planet are you from OH?!?! Good luck in jumping on bandwagons no one really has the time to jump on. Oh, we know it wasn't fashionable to be Queer back then, no one would disagree with you. thank good there are queers bring sexy back now...and if you want to help in that way you've got to get out more.

Paid jobs
Hi Dave: You seem to imply that people should not receive awards or recognition if the work they are doing to support LGBTQ inclusion is related to their paid job. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. There are a lot of people who go above and beyond the context of their paid jobs to work for social justice or inclusion. Social workers, teachers, lawyers, labour activists, politicians and yes, even business people, are working on behalf of queer issues and getting paid at the same time. We should celebrate and recognize people from all walks of life who are working hard for queer inclusion and this includes volunteers AND people who are getting paid.

ROY IS BRINGING SEXY BACK
Roy, Your ideologies are borrowed and half baked. I like the statue of Alexander Wood. It is a unique feature of our village and “erected” on his property. It IS part of our history. Roy, I know you would have preferred a statue of yourself. I just took another look at your picture. If that were your statue it would have cost twice as much in bronze and would not be any prettier...in fact... if you want to bring sexy back, you have to stay at home more.

OhLala, it's okay that you like the statue. No one is asking you to not like anything. As someone with a background in art, I'm speaking from what I know...but liking something is totally personal choice...some folks like Nickleback. I did say I liked the shiny bum part, didn't I? And please unless you're willing to say who you are, you're assumptions on my desires to have any kind of erection in The Village are pretty moot. Until then you're a nameless person defending bad art and defaming my good reputation and looks. Oh, Ask me if I'm losing sleep over that?!!! So boring and dare I say not really smart. I'm interested in a discussion over whether Alexander Wood is just a sad excuse to bring revisionist history to gay travel brochures or a hero for gays and colonists everywhere! And much love to you.(for some reason I think I know who you are, which would make this even more delicious, if you'd only come out...so to speak). So, I'm not going to say anymore to you Oh or Ohlala whether you're the same person or not...it's not very much fun having a discussion with someone who can't discuss and at the same time can't be open about who they are...it's just so Alexander Wood of you (without the erection in the village) xr

Wood is good
Let Alexander Wood rest in peace. A tour aimed at spitting on his legacy and grumbling about his statue must only be of interest to the 2 or 3 people mentioned in this story. Alexander Wood is worthy of folk-hero status, and his statue. He helped establish Toronto way back when this was an unimpressive little camp called York. He made a good living in business and law and bought real estate in a place we're all familiar with back when it was dirt (that alone gets him his statue). The dick scandal for which he is most well known should not dismiss his importance as a historical figure in young "colonial" Toronto. Most people know very little about the places they live, and the small gestures we make to preserve some of our history should be applauded, not ridiculed.

Why not a Statue for George Hislop???
Alexander Wood was no gay hero and what little that is known has been spun as gay folk history when actually it was a 19th century scandal involving one of the 1 percent elite which ran the city then. But his statue is elegant & good fun and is certainly an eyecatcher. But there are real heroes who worked hard for gay rights who have no statue--like the late George Hislop-- (but I hasten to add as I was there at the dedication ceremony about 7 or 8 years ago that there is a little parkette in the village which is happily named after George though you have to look hard for the plaque designating it so base don his accomplishements). Surely we should honor real heroes with statues in the village--and there are many from 60's and 70's history (e.g. Recently there was an historical plaque placed at University College in a prominent spot outside the building in honor of the people who founded the UTHA--the U of T Homohile Aassociation which started there in 1969 & continues to this day under another name.) But why not a nice statue for George Hislop who did so much for us over many years at Wellesley & Church? And there are many more real people who have becom (or would become LGBT heroes if their activites were better known by the community at large) & who should be posthumously honored in statuary splendour. Just think of the people who started Toronto GAy Action, CHAT, The Body Politic, the Lesbian and Gay Archives, The Right to Privacy Committee, and so many more 70's groups that made progress in the LGBT community not only possible but a reality. But I am sure there is a committee working hard somewhere (The CWBIA which organized the wood statue?) on such honors for our real gay heroes of the past.

Silly statue but...
When I was living in the GTA, I frequented Church Street. The statue is esthetically pleasing, but I always thought that it was rather silly, considering that the man didn't really do anything to advance the cause of Gay rights in Canada, or the British Empire. He was just a guy involved in a scandal. That being said he was involved at least indirectly with creation of Toronto. Also, so what if he was a colonialist? Ultimately without colonialism this country would not exist. Yes the aboriginal population was victimized horribly and we should never forget that but that is just one part of nations heritage, and quite frankly not enough to overshadow our colonial founders legacy. Especially when the mechanisms left by that legacy (parliament, protest, laws, courts, democracy, constitutional monarchy) has given the GLBT community so much in recent years. We have a pretty good go now but none of it would be here without colonialists like Alexander Wood.

Wood not a hero
The statue of Wood was erected because the Church Wellesley business improvement area (BIA) was trying to "brand" the area with a local 'character' and Wood came to mind, essentially a 19th century trashy reality star. I'm not sure that he was ever meant to be a hero, but a person of interest for the neighbourhood, who once owned the land that Church Wellesley sat own. Let's not forget he fled the country when the scandal broke. I'm not sure we should be focused on heroes, as who they get to be is always an expression of power, rarely purely about contribution. Normally, statues are erected for warriors and sometimes for poets (Robert Burns commonly). Perhaps some day, there will be a statue of Anna Nicole Smith in Barbados or The Situation on the Jersey Shore boardwalk. We've really lowered the bar on this one.

Wood is good pt. 2
Be warned James, anytime we make a monument of someone from the past(a "real" hero or otherwise), their bio becomes spun as folk history too. Back to Mr. Wood, you can't say for certain he wasn't a gay hero. This was a man who survived damning ridicule and called a "Molly" behind his back (over a scandal nobody can prove was even true), and through it all he remained a man of accomplishment who made his mark on our city's history. Overcoming anti-gay bullying 200 years ago when Toronto was a few sticks in the mud, that's something of note.

Pigeon poop
A bronze statue, was unveiled in the heart of the city's traditional gay village on Saturday May 28, 2005, as a gay tourist attraction. About a hundred on lookers, were on hand to witness the first glance of the 2.5-metre monument of Alexander Wood, a 19th century city magistrate. The general public is being led believe, Wood was first known homosexual in the town of York, and should now be honoured as hero for our gay youth. Wood's place in Canadian history is relatively unknown. There's no proof, he was even a homosexual. "The Village" BIA would have us believe, he was also a merchant who sold powder for wigs, as if that occupation marked him gay. The statue is on the corner of Alexander Street (name after Wood) at Church Street. Wood became the centre of a sex scandal in 1810 when he was accused by several young men of fondling them during a rape investigation. A woman who claimed to have been attacked by a group of men told Wood she had scratched the penis one of the assailant, so Wood took it upon himself to investigate the suspects' genitals. Word of his actions leaked out, and, in a cloud of shame, he was asked to leave the country by his superior. Wood returned to Canada and bought a piece of land in 1826 at Yonge and Carlton Sts., that was known as Molly Wood's Bush. For the rest of his life he was referred to as a Molly - In the slang of the day, a sodomite. Molly is from the Latin mollis meaning "soft". The word "homosexual" wouldn't be coined for more than a hundred years later. He eventually returned to Scotland, where he died in 1846. The Statue $200,000 cost was shared by the Church-Wellesley Village BIA and the City of Toronto. If Wood had been born, in the twentieth century, he would have been labeled a sexual pervert and worse a child molester, and more detail investigation would have commenced. Whether Toronto's downtown gay community, would be still be celebrating Alexander Wood as a local gay hero, is anyone's guess. Many LGBT lives ruined by being labelled Pervert
How many gay men's lives have been ruined by being falsely accused and “labelled” a “sexual pervert” or “child molester”? Well, Allan Turing, the gay man who saved Europe from the Nazis --a real hero-- was later charged with gross indecency for homosexual acts and given chemical castration. He later suicided. The British Govt. apologized to him posthumously in 2009. There are many more such stories. There have also been students who didn't get an A and accused their teacher of “molestation” only to be disproved in court. But the gossip still continued and ruined careers and innocent lives. And now, “Gay Marriage” has become a “Trojan Horse” in our midst, with “good” gays pointing moralizing fingers at “bad” gays. Calling others that hetero word “perv” doesn't make you superior, nor more acceptable in hetero eyes. If gays and queers jump on the politically correct hetero bandwagon of looking for “perversion” in every piece of gossip or whif of not being “normal” then we will lose our queer/gay/LGBT culture that we fought for centuries to establish and legitimize. Where does normalcy end and perversion begin and who decides? And why does this have to be re-explained to 50 year old gays? Gay culture “SUCKS.” Yes, we do SUCK and we love it. Suck is good. And that very fact still makes all of us perverts in so many hetero eyes. Stop using negative sexually based hetero labels. They destroy the soul. We have to celebrate our sexuality. If you want a statue of George Hislop than get an organization together and do fundraising and build it. Stop whining, do something concrete --or bronze. George deserves a statue. Get on it.

Friend of Pervs Everywhere
Perv - who do you think raised the money and made the statue of Alexander Wood happen? Do you think it was sex-rads fighting for the decriminalization of prostitution and rights for trans folk? Right. Something that happened almost 300 years ago can not be judged the way something today would be judged. What word would you use to describe Alexander Wood? patriot? hero? pioneer? He did nothing to promote queers and just used his power to get his rocks off..I'm sure that if it were women he were interested in and did the same thing, there'd be no statue erected to him in the club district. In truth the issue is not what Alexander Wood was, but why and how he would become something of value to build an identity around. I think Michael said it best above. He is as much a gay hero as Caligula. Sure the guy likes cock, but come on, is that all it takes for you? And to bring up Allan Turing to defend your argument!!! And Allan Turing?!! Apples and oranges my fruity friend. What happened to him was criminal and tragic.

Let him who has no sins cast the 1st stone.
Jesus was as much an invented idolized figure as was Alexander Wood. Although he was described as championing the poor and healing the sick --very commendable, if it really happened. Most of his legacy was written 40 to 100 years after he died. Wood may not have been brilliant or altruistic he just lived where the LGBT community happens to be today. Otherwise he is not important to me at all. Indeed Wood just loved dick, which is all that most people about him. To most people all that counts is that there is a decorative, pleasant little parkette with a statue --except for the crackheads. Definitely, George Hislop is much more deserving of a statue than Wood. So go out and have one built. You have equal rights to have a statue built. I would contribute to your fundraising effort. BTW What happened to Turing was indeed criminal and tragic and a perfect example of how values change with times. In his time he was the criminal. His personal life and intimacies were more important to lawmakers than the fact that he saved Europe from the Nazis. So many brilliant Gay men have been destroyed because of liking cock known as gross indescency or PERV. That in itself is very important to keep in mind because laws change with changing governments. Freedoms can be repealed. Another important issue is that, if you scratch the surface of any brilliant person's life, no doubt you will find something that verges on the scandalous. What you would call Perv. How many of your beloved selfless activists are also secret Pervs? Brilliant people often have high sex drives and like to experiment. Is that more important to you than all the good they do? It was more important to the British police in the case of Turing. It was more important to the Republicans who impeached Clinton for a blowjob. Have a nice day my holier than thou friend. Let him who has no sins cast the 1st stone.

The word PERV is objectionable Wood is irrelevant
I just saw a Law and Order episode where a woman was raped and she described a “Purp's” dick. The police examined the guy's dick. Too bad we couldn't see it because he was cute. So 300 years ago Alexander Wood examined soldier's dicks to find a rapist and still today police are doing the same thing, but with latex gloves on. Ha-Ha! So, the police today who examine dicks, are they all PERVS? Well no, because they're wearing latex gloves. (But if a guy wore latex gloves at the baths then he would be a PERV.) Lets zoom out a little more... Earlier this year in Tahrir Square in Egypt, during the overthrow revolution of Mubarak, the police arrested people. Some of those were women. The male police gave 2 fingered “Virginity Test” to the dozens of women who were detained. They had the legal and the moral authority to do it in their culture. It happens all over the Muslim world, I'm told. I don't agree with it, but millions do. I have no right to contradict Muslim laws. AND why is it that when a male teacher sleeps with a female teen student it is called rape, but when a gorgeous female teacher sleeps with a male teen student, all the men swoon and wish they had her as a teacher? Those straight guys are PERVS. There are a lot of PERVS in the world, where can we lock them all up? There's not enough room. AND Roy, you'll be the only one left out of jail, because you are the only one who is so pure. You'll be very lonely. Lets zoom out a little more... The word PERV is too narrow and too Christian Hetero for me. Whatever happens in the world is an aspect of humanity that I watch with a Sociologist's eyes. AND I'll be looking for your movie in the Academy Award nominations.

Replace Alexander Wood statue with a huge statue of Susan Gapka like the she-wolf that fed Romulus and Remus, but instead she would be breast-feeding “crackheads.” And of course, wearing red stilettos on all four of her hairy feet. Not a good use of taxpayer funds
$200,000 of taxpayer money was spent to erect the statue of Alexander Wood. 50% of the money came from the City of Toronto. The other 50% came from Church-Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (BIA). The BIA obtains its funds from a tax levy on property owners within the BIA district. Childish act of power to tear down Alex Wood
Why pull down the statue of Alexander Wood? It is built on the land where he lived. Alexander and Wood Streets are named after him. He belongs here. People are not media sound bytes. He didn't have to be either a Perv or a pioneer. He could have been both a Perv and a pioneer, at the same time and much more. Many pioneers, activists, humanitarians, were and are, also Pervs at the same time. It is immature to think of a person to be only one thing. If you want to celebrate another person with a statue, you can do that as well. Choose an appropriate person to honour, fundraise the money, commission an artist to do the work, get permission from the city to place it somewhere public. Et Voila you too can have your own statue instead of just whining. We could have 2 or 5 or more statues in the Village. We could have all kinds of sculpture in the Village. Why not? The more the merrier. Just tearing something down is a childish act of power. Roy Mitchell must have been badly toilet trained to have such a desperate vindictive need to tear down Alexander Wood. What a Psycho-Perv ! Get a laxative.
