Rainbows banned at Mississauga Catholic school
NEWS / Students stopped from donating cupcake money to LGBT Youth Line

Despite a ban on any rainbows at the St Joseph Catholic Secondary School anti-homophobia event June 3, the student organizers found a creative way to get their message across: hiding rainbows inside the cupcakes.

Leanne Iskander, 16, who founded the school’s “unofficial” gay-straight alliance in March, tells Xtra the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board put the kibosh on displaying any rainbows at their information booth.

“We brought signs and posters with rainbows, and we were told that we can’t put them up,” says Iskander, who was recently named the 2011 honoured dyke and youth grand marshal. “They said rainbows are associated with Pride. There’s so many other things that a rainbow could be. It’s ridiculous.”

The teacher who delivered the news told Iskander the decision came from the board. “The board wasn’t there, but they knew about the event,” she says.

Since rainbows couldn’t be displayed openly and proudly, the students baked rainbows into the cupcakes by dying the batter in a rainbow of colours. The cupcakes were sold for 50 cents each, raising about $200 for charity.

But the students couldn’t donate the money to any gay, lesbian or trans charitable organization, such as the LGBT Youth Line. “We asked if we could donate to the money to the Youth Line and the board said no. We were told to donate to Covenant House, a Catholic homeless shelter.”

Bruce Campbell, spokesperson for the board, could not be reached for comment.

Casey Oraa, chair of the political action committee for Queer Ontario (QO), has been supporting the students since they first submitted the GSA proposal. He says the rejection of the rainbow flag and the board’s insistence on benefiting a Catholic charity rather than one chosen by the students proves administrators have no interest in diversity.

QO supplied the students with several materials for the event, but many were rejected by the board, including the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation’s Shout Out Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Heterosexism, a booklet designed to educate young people on issues relating to sexual orientation and gender identity; an AIDS Committee of Toronto flyer; and information on trans health, he says.

“We proposed a whole bunch of resources and only about four got approved, and the ones that were approved were censored,” Iskander says. “They wouldn’t let us have this one booklet because it had one or two sentences on safe sex.”

Oraa says it’s absurd to ban the rainbow flag, but it’s completely in keeping with the Catholic board’s treatment of queer students.

“The Catholic board gave the students a carrot to try to silence them when they announced the anti-bullying clubs. But it’s not enough and it’s not meeting the needs of youth,” Oraa says. “The students recognize that and they are fighting for what they want.”

“Nothing the schools do surprises me anymore. Not allowing the rainbow flag? They have no concept of diversity. [The board] is pushing back because Leanne is a problem for the school. She’s also a problem for Catholic school boards and the Ministry of Education. Leanne’s a problem in the best possible way, even more than she even realizes. It’s fantastic she’s a problem.”

GSAs started making headlines in January after Xtra reported a ban on the student clubs by the Halton Catholic District School Board. Board chair Alice Anne LeMay told Xtra then that the board “doesn’t allow Nazi groups either. Gay-straight alliances are banned because they are not within the teachings of the Catholic Church.”

In February, Xtra revealed there are no GSAs at any Ontario Catholic school. Then, in April, all Ontario Catholic boards were instructed to allow “anti-bullying groups,” but a silent ban remains on all student groups focused on gay, lesbian and trans issues and group names can’t contain the word gay. GSAs are prohibited because “they lead to activism.”

(Andrea Houston)

Iskander has already announced that the group plans to bring their fight to Toronto’s Pride parade this year under the newly formed, student-led, student-driven contingent dubbed Catholic Students for GSAs.

Principal Frances Jacques doesn’t want the students telling everyone at Pride what school they attend. “She’s actually fine with it, she just doesn’t want [Pride] connected to the school, so we can’t say the school name or anything,” Iskander says.

Iskander says it’s more important to get the message out. To do that, the group plans to make buttons. Iskander is now appealing to the community for donations to raise about $1,500.

"Marching in Pride is important to us because it will allow us to advocate for GSAs in Catholic Schools to a large audience,” she says. “Handing out buttons will be an excellent way to spread the message that GSAs are needed in Catholic schools."

Oraa says Queer Ontario will continue to support the youth throughout the summer to advocate for GSAs in all Ontario secondary schools.

“The buttons are important as another way to spread the message and show solidarity for the cause across Ontario,” he says. “Some people think by now allowing the anti-bullying clubs, the issue is over. But it’s not. The youth want to hand these buttons out to their fellow students, public or Catholic.”

It is totally riduculous! Help the students continue their fight against these riduculous policies and individuals by helping to fund their button making endeavours! The design which states loud and proud "Catholic Schools Need GSAs" has become a symbol of resistance for these youth as well as youth across Ontario and they need to collective support of our communities to aid them in spreading this message wide and far. http://caseyoraa.chipin.com/catholic-students-for-gsas

Feel free to e-mail Bruce Campbell(bruce.campbell@dpcdsb.org) your displeasure. My email is below... =========================== What the hell is wrong with you people? No Rainbows? Seriously (http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Rainbows_banned_at_Mississauga_Catholic_school-10262.aspx) How f****ing close minded are you people? This is exactly why I do not follow any specific religion, because of wack job, close minded bigots like your organization. If you truly believe in god, then you believe god created us exactly how he wanted us to be. It's like saying "Black people are bad" because Jesus is white. Black people cannot control their skin colour anymore then homosexuals can control their sexuality. You should be practicing inclusion and love for your fellow man, not hate and bigotry. I hope your organization will do the right thing, but I fear you will not...

Hero's of Human Rights are often Radicul's of the
Ridiculous! This is why radical behaviour is nessessary to get the attention of the parents and the government to make this more of a mainstream issue. A couple of suspension's maybe even being expelled for useing the Rainbow Flag and then Parents will be speaking out this is what is needed, then we might see some heads pop up! Sorry to say that but unfortunately being oppressed can lead to many levels of outcry. Up to this point it is my understanding that the students have been Overly Patient. Hero's of Human Rights are often Radicul's of the past. Why are the students asking for permission to use the rainbow flag. Put it up, Stand up to what is right. Help me understand why they are asking permission to be gay? Just bye asking, gives the Authority the power to violate the students simple human right. The right to be themselves. If you want to change this in a nice way, in a diplomatic way, It does not happen they will not change there postion. It will have to be dictated to them without choice, believe it. No matter how Christian they try to present themselves there Religion tells them that, Control over this issue is priority for The Roman Catholic Church. Don't ask next time. It's to hurtful. Time to defund religious schools
oneschoolsystem.org Education Equality in Ontario is a non-governmental human rights organization and education advocacy group seeking the merger of the province's public and separate school systems into one English language and one French language public school system. Our objectives in seeking such a merger are: 1. to eliminate religious discrimination in admissions and employment in publicly-funded schools, and 2. to ensure better stewardship of the financial resources committed to the education of our children.

Ridiculous
I wouldn't be backing away from the rainbow message saying things like "there are so many things a rainbow could be." It IS the symbol of Pride and inclusivity and equality, and there's nothing wrong with any of them. That's why it was used and it needs to be defended for its symbolism because that's the whole point in the first place.

Banning Gays works so well, of course...
How many times does the God you believe have to create a homosexual or lesbian before it's clear that he wants them here? It's like banning gnats; you can do whatever you want to, say what you want to, toss poisons into the air and the land and the water in a bid to eradicate them, and they manage to mutate faster than you can keep up. Typical of Catholic schools.
As a product of a Catholic Elementry/High School, I can tell you that this is about par for the course when it comes to teaching kids to start being ashamed of themselves. I have to wonder, though, if they had the same theology books that I had when I was a kid... they had a panorama of the Noah's Ark / Covenant Rainbow on the cover, would any of those kids have been courageous enough to ask for those books to be banned, too? Cause yanno, God clearly forbids that you ever display any sign of love or pride of what you are.

I can imagine on a rainy, sunny day, they would close the windows and forbid the children from looking outside. LOL. God made you a rainbow, think he's trying to tell you something? Seriously, why would you be a Gay Catholic? Does it not bother you that your holy book says that you should be murdered? Does it not bother you that Christians HATE YOU! They hate you ! Get out of Christianity. Atheists are open, because we're liberals. We allow pride, rainbows, etc. We allow religion, too, so long as it's not a source of bullying. I.e. my brother came home crying from school one day (we went to a PUBLIC school) because all the kids laughed at him and told him he was going to burn in Hell. Christianity is a joke. Religion is a joke. Seriously, when you're so afraid of gays that you need to ban rainbows....

I admire these kids & I think they should continue their fight. But I also think that they should reserve some of their resources for the longer battle--to get the RCC out of the education business. Why should we as citizens and taxpayers allow an obsolete and regressive institution the opportunity to indoctrinate and oppress our children? They're more concerned about banning rainbows than protecting children from bullying and preventing suicide, and I doubt they'd be much happier with a club advocating girls' reproductive rights and contraception. I'm just wondering if LGBT groups across the country, student or otherwise can collectively take the Catholic schools system to court for human rights infringement. I know that they are private schools, however, they should still fall under the Canadian Charter of Rights and it seems to me that to overtly disallow anti-bullying groups and LGBT groups they are in essence implicitly and explicitly condoning if not promoting violence and bullying of a whole group. A really gutsy lawyer should take this one. I'm going to limit my comment to just this thought even though I've been thinking of this particular issue for years. I'm straight, but have had a child in the school system, have known too many young people affected by these issues and in the end...We're in the 21st Century for crying out loud!

Catholic schools uphold Catholic teaching
Obviously the school isn't against rainbows, it is against what the rainbows represent in this instance. Catholic teaching is that unmarried people shouldn't be having sex. This event wasn't anti-bullying, it was an attempt to have homosexual acts seen as acceptable. The Catholic Church is not going to change its position on moral issues and Catholic school shouldn't allow the promotion of things which go against Catholic teaching.

Where is the support from the hierarchy?
As a devout Catholic, I applaud the school board for their efforts to uphold CATHOLIC teaching in a CATHOLIC school (can't these kids go elsewhere to school if they so ardently oppose the Catholic Church's teachings?). What gets me is that the Church hierarchy should be taking on this fight, not sitting silently by and leaving the school board to deal with it. People seem to think activism will change the Church's teachings, but it won't, because the Church's teachings are Christ's teachings, and Christ is God—the same yesterday, today and forever. Homosexuals who choose to live according to the teachings of the Church on sexual issues are welcomed and embraced in Christ's fold; militant homosexuality, however, is based on a lie and therefore should not be tolerated in our Catholic schools. Kudos to this school for having the courage of their convictions!

re: Where is the support from the hierarchy?
Mollie have you ever actually read the Christian bible? I have from cover to cover and its more than obvious that it was written by many different men with many different conceptions of what god is all about, either that or god has a psychotic bi-polar illness. There are so many variations of the concept of god in the Christian bible that I can't imagine how anyone can seriously claim its the word of god, if it is it reflects very poorly on that god, besides which much of it, especially in the old testament is borrowed from more ancient religions such as the story of Noah's ark which predates even Judaism by several thousand years. Also the Egyptian religions had many similar Jesus type stories and characters who were also the son of a god and born to a virgin. Anyways the Catholic church has changed over time, the early church used to allow its priests to marry and even had a religious ceremony for joining two men in a relationship, though admittedly they didn't spell out the exact nature of that relationship. Once Christianity was taken up by an emperor and made the official religion did men set about deciding which religious tracts belonged in the bible and which did not, there were many Christian writings from the early days that gave much more prominence to women in Christianity, those writings obviously weren't included by the group of men deciding what to include in the bible. The bible we have today is without a doubt the creation of men and reflected the society in which the various writings were assembled into a bible, that period of time is today known as the dark ages. The Catholic church does change though, it used to murder people for being witches or having sex with someone of the same sex, it also supported slavery and saw women and children as the property of the man. Clearly it no longer holds those views today even though they are in the bible, in time they will recognize they're wrong about LGBT people, it may take a long time but it will happen.

We all fall short
A democracy where the voice of the people is considered the voice of god and truth is defined by public opinion should rightly not fund religious schools whose teachings stray from public opinion. The Catholic schools, in keeping with a truth that copulation between human beings should be reserved to instances where the act is open to life (no birth control) and performed within in a relationship that protects and nurtures new life (between a man and woman married to each other), should not support organizations to the contrary. A government that supports freedom of religion and freedom to practice a religion that is not a threat to public health, safety or morals, supports this decision of a Catholic School to put the kibosh on displaying materials of and sending money to organizations that normalize sexual activity outside of marriage between one man and one woman. Love defined as a conscious willingness to give all of yourself--time, treasure, effort--for the good of the loved one is hard!!! Good God have mercy on us all!

Why on earth should I subsidize bigotry with my tax dollars? If these Catholics can raise enough money from within their church to fund their regressive school systems, I say let them do whatever they want... as long as their students are also required to get a diploma within a *recognized* school system that subscribes to empathy and scientific fact instead of condemnation and religious dogma. LGBT kids already suffer terribly high rates of suicide, homelessness and substance abuse- I see no reason to let the Catholics crap all over a group that's already marginalized, ESPECIALLY because it's illegal for them to do so while being supported by taxpayer funds.

Why do you ask me why you should subsidize bigotry with your tax dollars? I would call a well-run Catholic school "timeless" rather than "regressive." And if it is providing all its own funding, it should not need to worry about someone else's opinion of empathy and scientific fact. Catholic schools in keeping with the magisterium absolutely subscribe to mercy and love. Sin is condemned, not people. LGBT kids and grown-ups are every bit as loved and precious as those who are not. But are we not people, rather than sexual orientations; beings rather than doings?

I’ve seen this tactic employed too many times then I care to count, yes sexual orientations doesn’t make up a persons full being just like a persons race, nationality, creed, gender, favorite food, ability to whistle etc doesn’t make up a person full identity. However it is still a part of them and when you have people and whole organizations trying to discriminate, bastardize, and basically show that somehow (usually on the basis that there god said so) that gay people/relationships are inherently deficient and abnormal then it tends to become all that much more important. BTW forgoing good reasoning god’s opinion (assuming a god exists) is still nothing more then an opinion and thus a flimsy wall to hid behind when offering condemnation.

beliefs
Your story says the gay groups mhave the right to push their beliefs on everyone because they are right. The school has to allow this because their beliefs are wrong. Who is the bigot here? If you do not agree with the school or the catholic church go else where. The human rights commission says if you dont like someone then YOU go away not them. Sorry right or wrong you do not have the right to impose YOUR views. Lead by example not by force. If you dont like the catholic view point take your message somewhere else.

re: as long as that being isn't gay
@Adam…You make a good point that there are many factors that make up a person’s full identity. How much pain and suffering we cause each other when we focus on one of those factors to discriminate and treat as deficient or abnormal another human person. It is quite short-sighted since we are all deficient! In this instance at St. Joseph’s, I do not see where their actions fall into that category. As Mitch states, “If you do not agree with the school or the Catholic Church, go elsewhere.” The school’s action has not condemned, discriminated or bastardized LGBT students. It has said the school cannot support the club’s desire donate money raised at the school to a group whose goals are contrary to the beliefs of Catholic Church. As Meg says, the kids can go off school grounds to do a fundraiser and donate the money as they wish. I believe God does not have opinions. He is truth and our small minds are sorely lacking in comprehension and understanding. May the power of all good be with you, Adam.

What about triangles?
I guess it can only be a matter of time before they will need to ban triangles and remove all mention of them from their Math courses. Anything less would leave Catholic schools wide open to the risk that a student might colour one of them pink!

So content...
I'm soooooo content that my tax dollars continue to help fund schools that preach on behalf of a moral minority despite the fact that I'm entirely opposed to their bigotry. No really, it's awesome. I'm not annoyed at all. Not in the least bit. They should just expel the gay and lesbian students because while they are recognized as entirely legitimate and legal citizens nation wide, it's not like the schools should be required to teach them anything. (This entire message is riddled with sarcasm b/c if I wrote what I really feel it'd just be a great deal of profanity.)

Flood 'Em Out
I thought the Rainbow was also, and firstly, G!d's symbol of the covenant with Noah and his descendants that another flood would never threaten human life on earth. Banning the rainbow!? Methinks that school had better check their sump-pump, as they're about to get some backing up of water soon. They'll need to start building their ark soon! The Rainbow is also a sign of diversity, and methinks diversity is the single most important principle for the coming age: biodiversity, cultural diversity, religious diversity and finally political diversity. Their immature decision to prohibit this show of colours should enable the colours to proliferate in response!

Support
It's unbelievable that after raising $200 with their bake-sale, the students at St. Joe's were not even allowed to donate the money to the cause they were trying to support. I made a donation today to the LGBT Youth Line on behalf of St. Joe's school. If you'd like to do the same go to www.canadahelps.org and search for LESBIAN GAY BI TRANS YOUTH LINE. Thank you emails can be sent to webmaster@sjssonline.com

Pick the Right Battle
The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2358 says “They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” That’s the part of Catholic teaching that gets at how people are to be treated. If we’re legislating behavior, it’s right on the mark. When freedom is the freedom to choose the will of God, unhampered by the desires for good outside the will of God, the Catholic Church is our friend. When freedom is the freedom to choose to act however we feel, the Catholic Church is not going to call it good within the will of God or true freedom. What we’re getting to here is legislating beliefs. Do we want to do that? That means putting our trust in people rather than God and the will of the stronger will prevail. Where does that leave the weak? We need to think long and hard before we legislate beliefs. The fight for acceptance of LGBT people in the Catholic Church was never a fight as the Church accepts everyone. The fight for acceptance of acting on desires that are not open to and protective of new life is not regarded as a fight for true freedom.

HUH
It is a catholic school! They should not be promoting anything sexual, gay or strait. And the monies should go to a catholic charity. We are way to politically correct. Keep sexuality out of the schools.

re: HUH
Julie Catholic schools in Ontario are publicly funded and must abide by our Charter of Rights which includes freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. Besides which teaching sexuality in schools is essential, approximately 85% of students in Ontario high schools in a recent survey wanted more information on sexuality and different sexualities in school. Teaching kids about sex and sexuality is essential to ensure they can confidently make informed decisions about their own sexuality. As well teaching sex in schools lowers teenage pregnancies, at least there seems to be an awful lot of teenage pregnancies in areas where sex is not taught in schools. As well kids need to be made fully aware about not only different sexualities but the importance of using the right sort of protection in avoiding STDs and pregnancies.

Public funding should be for truly public schools
I see that some commenters--especially the hardcore Catholics from the USA--are saying things like, Of course gays should be banned, this is a CATHOLIC school! What they don't seem to realize is that these Catholic schools are 100% PUBLICLY funded in Ontario! THAT'S the problem. (Or maybe you think that not being permitted to use a service that you've paid for is ok?)

Even if ...
Even if they lost public funding, which they should, I would not suspect that even a majority of the gay kids have much of a choice in their attendance of this school. Schools should be for teaching, not oppressing minority children ... and even a Catholic school should be able to live up to that standard.

rebuttal
The teaching that sterile sex is a sin is not going to change just because we don't like it. And it shouldn't. Truth and reality are absolute, not relative. re: "Catholic schools in Ontario are publicly funded and must abide by our Charter of Rights which includes freedom of expression and freedom of assembly" Does your charter not include freedom of religion? That's oppressive! On school grounds during school hours, the Catholic School's freedom of religion should have precedence over other groups' freedoms of expression and assembly. There are plenty of appropriate forums for freedom of expression and assembly, but doing so at the cost of another group's freedoms in their recognized time and place is not appropriate. re: why Catholic Schools should receive tax funding...because taxes go to services provided for the common good, and educating children has been deemed for the common good. Based on the reasoning "why should my taxes be used for something I don't agree with", defund all schools, or everyone check on their tax returns which school system, if any, their tax money should support. If it's not right for people to pay taxes for things they don't agree with, if Catholic Schools were to be defunded, no money would be taken from Catholics to pay for other school systems.
