QuAIA to host seminars on its work
TORONTO NEWS / Still confusion about term 'Israeli apartheid': McCaskell
Andrea Houston / Toronto / Monday, October 17, 2011

In an effort to reach out to the gay community and provide information about its work, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) has begun offering seminars to anyone interested in learning more.

QuAIA’s Tim McCaskell says there’s still a lot of confusion around the group’s advocacy work. To clarify the issues, he sent out a letter to several local queer organizations inviting them to get in touch.

For almost two years, QuAIA was in Toronto headlines and at the forefront of a bitter fight over free speech in the annual Pride parade.

The fight eventually went to city hall, where some councillors claimed QuAIA breached the city’s anti-discrimination policy, rendering Pride Toronto (PT) ineligible for city funding so long as QuAIA participated in Pride. A report from the city manager’s office eventually exonerated QuAIA and PT. Just before 2011 Pride, QuAIA announced it would not march in the parade.

Many people are familiar with the term “Israeli apartheid,” says McCaskell. “But there are still a lot of questions about why the term is used and why it’s a queer issue.

(Marcus McCann)

“We’re offering really casual drop-in seminars or discussion groups to talk about anything you want to know about,” he says. “If people want to squeeze us into their schedules, they are more than welcome.”

McCaskell hopes to put some perspective on local events and how they fit into the larger, international picture. He says the recent application for recognition of a Palestinian state by the United Nations has further raised the profile of the subject.

McCaskell says discussions may even detour to other countries, like Africa, to look at the history of apartheid.

“Even if they want to talk about what happened with Pride, we’d be happy to do that, too,” he says.

“But really, this is the work we are supposed to be doing, not spending all our time fighting about whether or not we get to march in the parade. We do solidarity work in the community and education in the community.”

These guys are bad news
QAIA are one of the most despicable groups of people I've ever had to endure in this city. All they want is to spread their hateful anti-Israel, anti-Jew agenda and they have no interest in actually helping Queers. If they had any interest in LGBTQ rights or equality they'd be protesting the fact that gays and lesbians are routinely dragged into town centres and lynched by their fellow Palestinians. They also ignore the fact that Israel is the only place in the Middle East it is even safe to be a LGBTQ. In Iran, state executions for gays are well known happenings. In Israel, they even have pride parades, and large segments of their straight population is fighting in the courts to legalize gay marriage. They might do it before all of the US has. This group has nothing to do with LGBTQ and everything to do with the fractured politics of the Middle East. If you care about getting the truth and understanding actualy LGBTQ issues in the middle east, there are many many, non-politicized ways to do so. Whatever your views on the situation there might be, if you are concerned about the LGBTQ side you owe it to yourself to get the information from an unbiased source, not a group that has appropriated the term apartheid for emotional reasons rather than factual ones.

So
3000 people are dead in Syria for demanding their freedom from Assad and they say nothing? I wonder why?

Also
and 3000 dead Syrians not a queer issue? They are demanding freedom also? But Palestinians are a queer issue but not the dead 3000 Syrians are not? Assad does practice an Apartheid System on the people of Syria. His party is a minority in a mostly Sunni Arab Nation saying they are protecting them from themselves. Not a Queer issue? 3000 dead unarmed civilians murdered by their own government who are demanding free elections and a free society not a queer issue? Why is Xtra promoting them?

Queer voices
Queer voices in the community are constantly changing directions. I see no reason why QuAiA should not be heard at a public forum. Queer West Fest approached the group in 2010 to take part in a community fair, a spokes person didn't see us as a political group and declined. Likely a misunderstanding, since lead up to 2010 Pride QuAiA were being banned, unbanned, and at the centre of a media whirlwind, it may have been that they were just too stretched to take on anything more and weren't communicating very well. If we were holding a unconference tomorrow, I see no reason they should not be invited again. In 2011 Queer West Arts Festival was pressured by a well known International Jewish newspaper not to include them in our festival. However, They would have been invited had we held a a mix and mingle community fair and given a community table, we have never said no to any queer community group. No fair was held in 2011 to difficult to mount.

Here we go again
It looks like QuAIA is now starting its bid to march in the 2012 Pride Parade. It will be another year in which time, energy and resources will be spent by pro-QuAIA and anti-QuAIA groups and individuals in the LGBT community. It's a pity those resources couldn't instead be used to support issues that really matter to the LGBT community in Toronto (e.g., a shelter for LGBT youth, GSAs and anti-bullying campaigns in schools, measures to raise self-esteem of LGBT people at risk for addiction, unsafe sex or other self-destructive behaviour, lobbying for legislation to protect trans people, etc.). As a result, it's another year of hating each other over the poisonous relations between Jews and homophobic Muslims in the Mideast, rather than building each other up. Pride is dead.

And you, Jason?
If I understand you correctly, Jason, you think the energy and resources that people put into the QuAIA issue are better invested elsewhere. But, here's the thing: People put their energy and resources into the issues that interest them, not the issues that interest someone else. How much of your energy and resources are you putting into the causes that interest you, Jason?

Meanwhile in Saudi Arabia
While Xtra always seems to cover what QuAIA is doing as part of its campaign against gay-friendly Israel, Xtra often fails to report on what is happening to homosexuals in Muslim countries. Here's the latest example: according to an October 18, 2011 report on Advocate.com, twenty gay men were recently arrested at a wedding in Saudi Arabia (where homosexuality is illegal). Another 200 men, allegedly wanted by police, were also arrested. See: http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2011/10/18/Newspaper_20_Gay_Saudis_Arrested/ At least we can read Advocate.com to find out what is happening to LGBT people in Muslim countries.

Who died and appointed you Xena, Warrior Princess?
WTF are you to say that someone isn't "wanted" in our community? I'm no fan of the way QUAIA choose to spread their message, but it includes people who have served our community selflessly and with honour for DECADES. They have EARNED the right to have their say, even if they are wrong, whereas you are nothing but a waste of oxygen.

2 people can be both right even if they disagree
XOX, Some people do not have the intelligence -IQ- to understand irony. They understand things only in a concrete way. In the video you refer to above, the actors wearing niqabs are saying “It is criminal to beat your wife in Israel: Death to Israel" BUT what they really mean is that it is NOT criminal but acceptable to beat your wife in Muslim countries, yet the Muslims still want death to Israel, even though Israel has better Human Rights. The videographer misunderstands the message and thinks that the actors are calling for Death to Israel. He is trying to defend Israel. XOX, You also sometimes misunderstand issues and defend Israel without thought to right or wrong, humanity or inhumanity. 2 people can be both right even though they disagree.

Satirists are Quaia to a "T"
Those satirists are mocking the stupidity of groups like Quaia and leftist organizations in general who are supporting a religious group (Islam) who would take away the rights of gays and women in a heartbeat if given the demographic opportunity.

Leftists and QuAIA -DO NOT- support Islam
Leftists and QuAIA -DO NOT- support Islam. THEY ADVOCATE FREEDOM FOR ALL PEOPLE. They DO SUPPORT ISRAEL as a country. They don't support Israel's MILITARY OCCUPATION of oppressed Palestinian people. 4 separate issues. You XOX do not have the IQ to understand 4 separate issues at the same time. FOR EXAMPLE, I'm a Canadian. I support Canada. I do not support my country waging war on other countries. 2 separate issues. Can you understand 2 separate issues XOX?

Queer Palestinians -- where are you
I personally will only become interested in Queers for Palestine when I see actual queer Palestinians all over the world and especially in Palestine stand up, make media headlines, do anything to let us know that they actually exist and are not just a figment of the imagination of boring tired old clapped out Tim McGaskall (who has forfeited any respect I once had for his past self in his endless PR self-promo stunts like QUAIA). Queer Palestinians -- where are you?!?!
