Protesters mount anti-G8 "people's summit"
MOVEMENTS / G20 is "invading" Pride's turf: organizer

Organizers are calling this summer’s G8 and G20 summits “the largest security event in Canadian history” — more expensive and elaborate, even, than the Vancouver Olympics. The federal government will spend at least $179 million on security, first at the Huntsville G8 Summit and then in Toronto, where the G20 will meet at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

It’s the cost of holding one of the world’s most divisive meetings in a major city, where dissenters cannot be kept out of sight. The G8 and G20 have become flashpoints for protests about social justice, environmentalism and anti-globalization.

Here in Toronto, activists have been planning for the meetings since last spring but kicked into high gear with a flurry of press releases in March. They are working hard to build something as different as possible from the exclusive closed-door meetings of the G8 and G20.

“The G8/G20 represent a small minority of wealthy countries in the world, and their priorities tend to reflect free-market neoliberal economics and imperialist security,” says Marya Folinsbee, coordinator of the G8/G20 People’s Summit, planned for June 18–27 in Toronto. “And so, at the People’s Summit, our intention is to make space available for the voices of diverse communities around Toronto and around the world, to challenge the supremacy of the G8 and G20.”

The People’s Summit is really a conference, backed by a steering committee that incorporates labour, environmental, student and social justice groups. Queers have already received shout-outs in the advance materials.

“I think the G20 is invading space that Pride Toronto created. The Pride festival is being impacted by the G20,” says Folinsbee. “But I think that really the People’s Summit is about solidarity amongst all people who are affected by the oppressive systems that are currently in place. It’s about system change.”

Organizers say they won't dictate the content of the summit, nor will they handle protest plans. A separate organization, the Toronto Community Mobilization Network, will run events and assist protesters.

“We’re supporting transportation, food, communications and logistics to people who are in agreement with our basic understanding,” says Syed Hussan, one of the group’s organizers. That understanding calls for “Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, income equity and community control over resources, migrant justice and an end to war and occupation, gender justice, queer rights and disability rights, and climate and environmental justice.”

What the understanding does not include, however, is any specific agreement on demonstration tactics — admittedly a difficult thing for any diverse group of activists to agree on.

“We believe that there’s a lot of violence that the G8 and G20 are inflicting on communities around the world, and it’s not our place to tell people how to respond to that,” says Hussan. “Our principles are respect and solidarity, respect for people’s responses to the injustice that they face.”

The network will help train marshals, medics and legal observers, help with postering and routing, and may provide some direct-action training.

Groups or individuals looking to submit programming for the People's Summit should check peoplessummit2010.ca for the next round of applications.

The Mobilization Network has no steering committee or affiliation with larger groups but rather a number of open committees. The next open planning meeting for the People’s Summit will be held April 20, 6:30pm, at the Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil St in Toronto. Visit g20.torontomobilize.org  for more.

early coverage
I am so glad that XTRA has written two months in advance about the upcoming events and protests, and in an even-handed manner. We will be hearing so much propaganda and vitriol about the protesters in the weeks ahead, that some early opportunities for people to learn are most welcome. www.g20breakdown.com

Agitators
Unlike Darren I don't feel like we should be praising Xtra for covering this protest movement because it just gives it more attention than it deserves. If you are against the high cost of security for the G8/G20, then don't go downtown to disturb the summit that week because it will only intensify the already insane security situation. There is no need to try and re-live 1999 in Seattle, whatever did that accomplish? Bullying the diplomats and powerbrokers coming for the summit is not going to stop child labour and climate change, it's just going to bugger up traffic in Toronto even more so. Most disturbing here is the pathetic attempt to try and get people fired up by saying the G8 is trying to takeover and ruin Gay Pride. There was a scheduling conflict - it was resolved - what more is there to say?

What's gay about this again?
''Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, income equity and community control over resources, migrant justice and an end to war and occupation, gender justice, queer rights and disability rights, and climate and environmental justice.'' Wow what long and convoluted list! What the hell do these people possibly hope to accomplish? It's like a meeting of anarchistic communist hippies from a univeristy class on political science. And by the way, Indigenous soverignty and self determination? Yeah right, segragating people out from the mainstream society is always a good idea it's been working well in Canada for a long time.

Silly Toronto leftists
You should be grateful that your has-been decaying crappy city was given a major event before Ontario defaults on its bonds.

re: Charles and Mike
Mike's comment quotes the article stating queer rights will be discussed at the People's Summit, if queer rights aren't a gay enough issue for you then you need to give your heads a shake and reread the article. Also many queers are out to agitate for a just society for all including queers so its only natural that they would be supportive of other non-queer issues as well. Social justice in general is a queer issue as much as its a women's issue, a visible minority issue, a worker's issue and so on. Have you forgotten already the support we've received as queers fighting for our rights in this country from many non-queer social activists? It would be pretty selfish now to refuse to participate in the ongoing fight for other social justice issues just because we've achieved legal equality here, besides which we still have a long way to go towards achieving social equality. Your "I'm alright Jack screw everyone else" attitude isn't shared by the vast majority of LGBT folks in my experience, they tend to be caring individuals who want to see everyone else suffering in our society from the policies set at such events as the G8 and G20 do better in their lives. Many of the financial and social policies in our country are determined at such events where average citizens have zero say so its only fitting some try to make their point of view heard through protests, that is democracy for you after all, you don't have to agree with those fighting for a just society but you should at least respect their right to make their voices heard.

silly moron
ron you are a moron, Ontario is on sound financial footing and growing as is Toronto, there is no chance of Ontario or Toronto defaulting on any money it owes, in fact just last week Moody's, a bond rating group, declared that Toronto was one of the safest places in the world to invest in bonds, you must have heard about that, why else would you bring up the issue of bonds at this time, do you really think anyone will take your bigoted point of view over that of Moody's? Whenever you talk about Toronto you make it clear you've never actually been here, Toronto is the exact opposite of decaying or a has been, the sky line of the city has been dotted with construction cranes for a long time now, even throughout the recession the building never stopped in Toronto, the housing market is racing along as well, they can't build new homes fast enough to meet the demand and Toronto was also recently rated as the 2nd fastest growing city financially in Canada after Vancouver and that was only because of the economic boost given by the Olympics there. ron you are a moron, nothing you ever have to say bears any resemblance to the truth, this "major event" as you call it will be a financial drain on our city and something we don't need to boost our image internationally, maybe few in the world had heard of Vancouver before the Olympics but the same can't be said of Toronto which is the destination of choice for immigrants from every corner of the world, and for others from every part of Canada too for that matter. I get that you don't like Toronto for whatever reason but don't try to make things up and pass them off as fact, no one believes you, unless perhaps they're as ignorant as you but its hard to believe more than a handful are anywhere near that ignorant.
