TORONTO NEWS / Stabilization fund "never existed"

Pride Toronto’s financial statements from the fiscal year 2009 — which ended last July — have finally been released, and they reveal a year of growth, change and controversy. In fiscal year 2008, Pride commanded a budget of close to $2 million, but in 2009 its budget was more than $3 million.

It also posted a deficit — after a modest profit of $41,972 in 2008, in 2009 the organization took a loss of $138,605.

According to Pride Toronto executive director, Tracey Sandilands, three factors are responsible for most of the deficit. The first is the gap in 2008 between the departure of former executive director Fatima Amarshi and Sandilands’ arrival.

“In September, October and November, operations continued,” says Sandilands. “There was a consultant trying to basically run the office and keep everything together.”

The consultant was paid more than Pride’s normal management team — as consultants generally are — so the organization went over budget. The second factor was last summer’s civic workers’ strike.

“We didn’t employ private contractors for the parade; however, we have always employed private contractors for the cleanup,” says Sandilands. “There were significant additional costs associated with garbage cleanup as a result of the strike.”

Last May, National Post reported that Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) had been barred from participating in the parade, but within days Pride clarified that the group would be welcome to march, so long as it registered as an official group. At the time, Pride Toronto said QuAIA had marched without registering in the past. (In fact, Xtra reported last spring that QuAIA was not unregistered but was part of CUPE Toronto’s contingent, along with a variety of community organizations.) In any case, Sandilands says part of the deficit is due to “additional security costs to manage the political messaging issue” — more security personnel.

One line of the statement shows a stabilization fund going from $250,000 to nothing between 2008 and 2009. Sandilands says that this stabilization fund in fact never existed. “We don’t know why the previous auditors approved it,” she says.

Sandilands noted that although previous management “made provisions for a stabilization fund, the fund was never actually created, and at the time that I joined the organization we looked at the stabilization fund and found that it didn’t exist. So the fact that it has been removed from the books is purely to make the situation accurate.”

As for the long delay in releasing these financial statements, Sandilands noted that Pride’s books were ready for auditing in September, and Blair Spinney, a partner at the auditors, Adams & Miles LLP, confirmed that the audit began Sep 29.

“The audit was longer, as our firm was new to the audit, and most of the staff at Pride was new this year as well,” says Spinney. “Given the limited resources of an organization of this size, the office move and the successful World Pride bid in the interim, the financial statements weren’t issued for board approval until December 17.”

One cryptic section of the statements notes that Pride is “subject to a dispute with a supplier regarding contract fees,” and that $10,000 has been set aside for a possible settlement. Sandilands confirmed that a settlement has not been finalized but would not comment on the circumstances of the dispute. Whatever its nature, the settlement affects only a small proportion of Pride’s budget.

Bah!
2008 vs 2009 Spent more AND lost money? (+$250,000 Stability Fund missing?) (BTW - there are many of us in the community who can confirm the previous existence of that Stability Fund regardless of your insistence to the contrary.) Hmmm ... where did the money go? More & more staff expenses? Renovated old office yet moved to new premises within 6 months? I guess no accountability or fiscal responsibility is required anymore. Seems like those working for Pride no longer have any responsibility to do a good job, spend money wisely, or even be honest. And you're seeking charitable status? Bah!

In response to Trevor B
Sounds like Trevor B. is a disgruntled member, or maybe even former Director, that is no longer on the inside. You say that you and others can CONFIRM the existence of the Stability Fund? Well, then you'd better be getting your little butts down to the local police authority with your EVIDENCE so they can INVESTIGATE. BTW, standing and saying "many of us......who can confirm" is not evidence, and is not credible. I think it would be prudent for you to keep your mouth shut, b/c people can sue when false or unsubstantiable claims are made. Not taking sides here, just offering a little advice. To put it all more succinctly, PUT up or SHUT up Trevor. I've been to many Pride celebrations in Toronto over the years, and hope to attend many more. Last year was great. This event does far more for our community than we can ever measure. It is a time and place for us to gather with friends and family, no matter of sexuality or position in life. It's a time for celebration and solidarity! If you can't be a part of it, stay apart from it! But if you get over the polictics, we can all celebrate together, as it should be.

Lair, liar, pants on fire
Could Darryl Robert Browne of Regina Saskatchewan very well be the infamous Executive Director of Pride Toronto, Tracey Sandilands? It is rare for us Canadians to ask someone to PUT up and SHUT up...or to claim that Pride did well last year. Double the budget and running $138,605 in deficit is hardly great in any sense. "A time and place for us to gather with friends and family, no matter of sexuality or position in life"...that's news to me. Pride is dead. Long live Pride (as we know it). Tracey Sandilands - you can take your White supremacy attitude back to South Africa! Welcome to Toronto, this ain't Johannesburg no more darling.

Why so SERIOUS?
In 2008, Staff members of Pride Toronto all have resigned or terminated. In 2009, all previous volunteer coordinators also either resigned or terminated. Recent changes include the termination of Event Logistic Program Manager, Jordan Patterson and most recently, Associate Director, Tamara Madden... politics?

Nicholas, don't be such a....
dickhead! I am not posing as anyone but me! Handle it! I'm male, 2000 miles away from you, and I said "Put up or Shut up!" SO DO IT!! When I said Pride last year "was great", I was not referring to the money situation AT ALL! I was talking about the organization of it, the entertainment value of it......IT WAS FUN!! Can you get your little head around that, Nicholas? And if the intent of Pride is "news to you", I guess you don't get it and you should stay home next year and let the rest of us have a good time! What a small minded idiot!!

Reality Check
Wow! Nicholas, relax. First of all who do you think you are to speak for Canadians? A reality check is in order. Second, I agree with Darryl. If you do not enjoy Pride stay home. You have obviously missed the entire message and feeling of it. Finally, "White supremacy attitude?" I take it you know Tracey Sandilands very well and have known her for years in order to make such a crack. It is generalizations such as that that kills society. Look at all of the people who make generalizations about our community. Congratulations, you have stooped to their level. Good luck getting back up.

Holy Crap...or Holy Conjecture
This is an interesting stream. I was pointed to it earlier today. Tonight there was a General Meeting at Pride and I wonder what was said if anything. I am in Vancouver and could not attend. I am a former Board Member of Pride Toronto. All of the information that is required to resolve this "conjecture" is available in the minutes of the board. Or by closely looking at the audits Pride Toronto have posted publicly. My understanding is much of this information is available upon request for review by membership at the Pride Office. It seems obvious people here are using an alias for commentary. If this is important enough of an issue for dialogue, why do people not stand up and open to make comments? Why hide, isn't pride about openness and honesty?

Another lie
As a former member of Pride Toronto during that 'gap' in 2008, I would like to know who the consultant was??? I don't remember ANYONE around trying to run the office that would have been paid to keep it going, the only person running the organization was Mark Singh. Was he the consultant? was this consultant on your selection committee???? or was it just Mark bringing you over here to suit his own needs. Go back to South Africa where you belong.
