Pride Toronto performers weigh censorship controversy
PRIDE CENSORSHIP / To play or not to play?

Soon after Pride Toronto chose to censor the term "Israeli apartheid," the anarchic folk-rock band Tomboyfriend pulled out in protest. At the packed town-hall meeting held at the 519 Church St Community Centre on June 7, lead singer/songwriter Ryan Kamstra expressed surprise that no other bands had yet done the same.

But earlier that afternoon, John Caffery of Kids on TV announced his withdrawal from a DJ gig at Pride. Singer Troy Jackson, writer David Demchuk and Pride stage host and mayoral candidate Keith Cole also dropped out. And now other scheduled performers are mulling over whether or not to do the same.

"I view free speech as vital to social change and empowerment," says Caffery. "If free speech is to be taken away, then it certainly is not a party I can play music for."

Kamstra agrees, noting the language in the contract Pride Toronto requires performing artists sign. The contract requires artists to be sensitive to Pride Toronto's corporate sponsors and "to perform in a manner consistent with the celebration of Pride and positive value of diversity...[and] not present images or messages that promote or condone, or may promote or may condone, violence, hatred, degradation or negative stereotypes of any person(s) or group(s)."

"I couldn't stomach signing that contract," says Kamstra. "A lot of our stuff has express political content."

Kamstra says the clause is too ambiguous and open to interpretation.

"I don't see how we could mount a performance in any meaningful way," he says.

"I'll have to think about it more," says "Gentleman Reg" Vermue. "We actually weren't going to play Pride this year, but The 519 asked us to play in their yard and we said yes. We're being paid by The 519."

"I'm conflicted," says singer Ryan G Hinds. "I really want to stand in solidarity with everyone else, but pulling out affects my backup dancers and my songwriter, not to mention my own bank account. It might make me a sell-out, but some people need to realize that Pride season is more than just politics... for some of us, it's how we put food on the table."

That's fair, says Kamstra. "I really respect that this is a matter of personal conscience, what one feels the thing to do to be," though not everyone is as conflicted as Hinds.

"We're playing," says Steve Digeur, singer for punk rockers SeƱor Kasio. "Hey, we're musicians. We like to play and we like to party. So we'll be there."

"For us, playing Pride represents a way to connect to our queer audiences," says half of electro duo Woodhands Dan Werb. "I have mixed feelings about Israel and Zionism and feel strongly about Palestinian human rights, but Pride isn't the venue that I would use to convey those sentiments."

"Fuck Pride. Fuck Israel. Fuck Palestine," says Crackpuppy guitarist Patricia Wilson. "Only rock and roll matters. It is the only true government, the only true religion."

Wilson says the whole controversy is actually a case of "corporate and government blackmail and [is] a real fucking shame because it divides the community. In 20 minutes, when this is all over, the community will still be divided."

"I rest the onus on creating that environment solely with Pride Toronto's decision to create a precedent by censoring one group, because it was optic and convenient for it to do so in a given climate," says Kamstra.

"I feel the community at large has been vocal in communicating why this is wrong and that it is the festival programmers' responsibility to respond," says Caffery.

UPDATE: The women's party Crave, a Pride Toronto event to be held at the Phoenix on June 25, has been cancelled, according to organizer Carlyle Jansen. Jansen has so far not given a reason.

Sadly, Middle East bullshit has succeeded....
...where right wingers couldn't. What should be first and foremost a celebration of our culture and diversity has now degenerated into an us vs. them quagmire involving middle east politics which has no real business at pride to begin with. QAIA should be protesting at the Israeli consulate or the G20 for that matter. Now it appears Pride is being dismantled piece by piece. I would like to congratulate all involved for pissing on pride simply because of some bullshit politcally correct crap. I have personally travelled that part of the world and have seen first hand all the misery on both sides, neither are on the side of the angels. Well, as I said, this conflict must be making many a social conservative and religious wingnut happy as they watch Pride come tumbling down. Congrats to all on job well done, Harper, Fox News and the Pope couldn't have done a better job of it. Sad....truly sad.

Jon - I can understand your angst
...but you need to keep in mind that a large part of the blame for the quagmire that the queer community is in rests squarely on the shoulders of PT. No matter how you slice it - PT invoked censorship on a legitimate political voice. The solution was blindingly simple: allow QuAIA to march under their own name just as has they had been allowed to in past Pride parades. PT already had 2 strong legal opinions on hand that clearly stated that "Israeli Apartheid" does not contravene Toronto's anti-discrimination policy. PT should have pushed back hard with the City and told its sponsors that free expression was not for sale. Why they did not is beyond me. Sadly, this outcome was entirely predicatable and avoidable. Shame on Sandilands, Kyle Rae, and the board of PT!

The basic facts on Pride and QuAIA
Let us always return to the basic facts. The two primary requirements for participation in Pride are to be: (1) part or supportive of the LGBT community; and, (2) law-abiding. Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) meets both of these requirements. Singling out one group that meets the requirements and banning its lawful political speech is censorship. Full stop.

ITA Jon
I totally agree with Jon. Stephen Harper or homophobes aren't threatening Pride, it's Dyke Elle Flanders and her personal agenda. What a miserable bitter lady. She should go stand outside a synogogue or the Israeli consulate and wave her little fist and leave the gays alone.

Stephen Harper and the homophobes may have more to do with this than you think. In any case, you have lost the argument if all you can do is disparage those with whom you disagree. Why don't you make a substantive argument that addresses the content of Elle Flander's position?

re: ITA Jon
Soren you're seeing a very small and selective slice of the issue, those who have literally been threatening Pride are Gladstone and his kind who insist that only one opinion on Israeli policy be allowed to be presented at Pride this year. How have they been literally threatening Pride? by going after its funding and doing their best to get funding cut from Pride, not just from the gov't but from sponsors too, Gladstone and his ilk have been doing their best to actually shut down Pride so that it'd have to rely on only free events unless they got their own way. Consider that QuAIA has only ever wanted to march in Pride like they have the last couple of years, they haven't done anything to attack Pride's existence since they know that would be harmful to the community, Gladstone and his ilk don't care for the community at all or else they wouldn't have been working so hard to pull all funding from Pride so there'd be only a tiny celebration for the community this year. Blaming QuAIA for threatening Pride is nothing more than blaming the victim. Gladstone blackmailed Pride and the LGBT community in Toronto, the fact that some are blaming QuAIA for this just shows that Gladstone's propaganda was very effective. Pride should have resisted this blackmail, they would have had a large angry and motivated community to back them up instead they rolled over without a fight at all and considering that Sandilands and Gladstone have apparently been socializing together in recent weeks it makes one think the fix was in long ago, especially when Sandilands was quoted as saying when they made their decision to censor, that they should just "let the left howl" and ignore them. This isn't a right/left issue so much as right/wrong one, there are free speech advocates on both the right and the left and there have been instances of unjustifiable censorship on both the left and the right too, we need to work with those from both sides to fight for our common cause, freedom of

re: Sadly, Middle East bullshit has succeeded....
Jon I share your anger at this situation though I may direct it towards different areas. Anyways the issue for those refusing to participate in Pride this year is censorship, not Israeli apartheid or Hamas or any other Middle East issue, of course they muddle the issue and get people worked up on both sides but that's what debating and protests are for. People are upset about Pride censoring participants regardless if they share QuAIA's world view or not. Freedom of expression is huge deal in the LGBT community, well for those who care about more than just partying anyways, freedom of expression is so important because of all the censorship we have faced at the hands of anti-gay bigots who even to this day still try to censor our presence out of the public sphere, look no further than the Harper Con's refusal to mention LGBT equality and same sex marriage in the guide for newcomers to Canada. Every time we allow someone or some group to censored unjustifiably we add to the precedent being set and weaken the notion of the right to free speech. Free speech is already a limited right but we must make sure that we adhere to the limits on free speech like banning hate speech but that we don't let it creep into other areas that should not face censorship like in this case political speech. This issue is way bigger than QuAIA and of great importance to very many in the LGBT community in Toronto, apparently more so for the older crowd who still remember what it felt like to be censored themselves and the battles we faced overcoming LGBT invisibility in the wider society, that invisibility is largely gone thanks to the hard work of those fighting for all of our freedom of expression as LGBT folks and events like Pride of course which is a rampant display of free expression everywhere you look from drag queens and kings to the nudists and others who make our community so colourful and unique. Censorship at Pride is an insult to those who have fought so hard for our freedoms.

It's PRIDE not the IDF idiots.
"Ryan Kamstra expressed surprise that no other bands had yet done the same." Wow. Hey, Ryan, if your band made the decision to boycott that's great but complaining that others haven't is like making a contribution to charity, making a big public display of it and condemning others who don't do the same. Basically it's totally a douchebag move.

Ryan, most of the comments objecting to Jon's point of view have been moderate and respectful. When you have to characterize those with whom you disagree as "vultures" you demonstrate the bankruptcy of your own position. If you have a substantive point to make, please make it.

Ok kids
I've been reading these posts for a while and I think the only way to resolve this is to respect other people's opinions. There's no right or wrong here kids... it's just differences. That said, please continue this important debate without the childish mud throwing.

Regardess of how you feel about his issue and both sides have strong opinions about it, please be respectful. Groups should feel free to boycott or not. Neither side has a right to name call the other. I will be going and having a good time and I hope everyone else does as well.

Chuck: I have to disagree.
There IS right and wrong. Apartheid is wrong; Israel is an apartheid state. Censorship is wrong; Pride Toronto is censoring an LGBT group engaged in lawful political speech. We need to correct such wrongs because some people work very hard at keeping them in place.
