Pride Toronto looks for new leaders
TORONTO NEWS / Coalition for Free Speech to question candidates at public forum

It’s been a tumultuous year for Pride Toronto, between the censorship fiasco, financial problems and public conflict with Blackness Yes and leaders in the trans community. With a city council motion to defund Pride still hanging in the air, the organization will select new leadership at the annual general meeting, planned for Sept 23.

Director nominations closed on Aug 25, and voters at the AGM will select three new board members, including both co-chairs.

Nominees will be vetted by the current board, and they will be elected well ahead of promised community consultations to address the future of Pride Toronto. The process has activists concerned.

In mid-August, the folks behind Pride Community Contract called on the current board, executive director Tracey Sandilands and World Pride 2014 chair Mark Singh to resign ahead of the AGM.

“We have no confidence that the leadership of Pride Toronto as presently constituted, including the current board and the ED, can competently lead any process of reconciliation in Toronto’s queer community,” read the statement.

Community Contract organizers were not immediately available to comment.

At the same time, the Pride Coalition for Free Speech is planning an all-candidates style meeting where potential directors can take questions from the community at large. The meeting will be held at the 519 Church Street Community Centre on Sept 8 at 7pm. (Xtra will co-sponsor that meeting, and Marcus McCann, Xtra’s managing editor, is one of the organizers.)

Earlier in the summer, Martin Kuplens-Ewart and Matthew Cutler, working with the coalition, suggested that critics volunteer at Pride in order to earn a vote at the AGM. The coalition now appears to be adopting their working-inside-the-system approach.

“People don’t really have a lot of information about these candidates going into the general meeting, which makes it difficult to vote on,” says Ashleigh Ingle of the Coalition for Free Speech.

She is also concerned that candidates may be disqualified before the vote. Pride’s bylaws give the existing board the power to screen nominees. That screening process is also why the board will not accept nominations from the floor of the AGM. But according to Margaret Ngai, interim co-chair, the screening process is about competence, not politics; the board is looking for candidates with a background working within complex, volunteer-dependent nonprofits.

“It’s more the skillset that we’re looking for,” says Ngai. “To say, this person can analyze the situation and they’re committed to the values of Pride, to making Pride successful, so their intention is not to say, ‘Hey, you know, I really hate Pride, and I want to see it gone.’”

Ngai was quick to clarify that critics of Pride could qualify.

“I don’t think they hate Pride. I think all the comments that we’ve got so far are people who are passionate about Pride,” she says. “They want Pride to represent something, and obviously Pride exists to serve its membership, so the members can definitely shape the strategic direction.”

The Coalition for Free Speech argues that a new strategic direction will be difficult if directors are elected before community consultations are complete.

“We really think it would be most beneficial if the AGM would occur after the consultation process, so that any of the people who are running can take into account the issues of the community and actually address those issues,” says Ingle.

But Ngai thinks that a good board is always ready to respond to feedback.

“You can’t predict things three years down the road,” she says. “A board member or a competent board member should be able to take recommendations and input at any point in time and influence how the organization functions on behalf of the members.”

In the meantime, she says, the board’s responsibility is to keep operating.

“We are incorporating the findings and recommendations from the panel into the strategic planning process, but that should be independent of the normal operation of the organization.”

Despite their differences, the Coalition for Free Speech hopes that Pride’s existing board will endorse, or at least attend, the candidates’ forum. Ngai has promised to discuss the matter with the board but noted that she has some practical concerns.

“Right now, because the request just came in this week, our plan is to have the final list of candidates almost a week before the AGM,” she says. “We’ll have to see, logistically, how that can even happen.”

Are you for real?
I would say that this most recent year's Pride committee did an excellent job given the challenges they faced, and I know for a fact that 99% of people that worked WITH them (instead of against (Xtra)) stand behind them 100% and wouldn't return without them. What is most divisive in our community are supposedly unbiased "newspapers" hatemongering and attacking individuals instead of trying to present all sides of an issue and spur an intelligent discourse. I am embarrassed to have Xtra acting as a voice for myself and my community (as are most people I know).

Itching for a Mideast-style stoning
It looks like Xtra and the so-called "Pride Coalition for Free Speech" (i.e., one of QuAIA's front organizations) are itching for a Mideast-style stoning.

Re: Are you for real?
Colin, I couldn't agree more. This rag reports on the "divisiveness" and "dissension" in the community, but they are, in fact, the ones causing this division in our community. Thank you Xtra for proving once and for all that you no longer speak for the LGBT community. You happily report on the Pride Toronto board and ED being challenged and replaced, but I say it is the Xtra leadership that needs to be replaced. Honestly, everyone I have talked to regards Xtra as overly-biased journalism and an embarrassment to the community.

gimme some xtra lovin'!
Pride Toronto has admitted that they have not been listening to the community, they run the organization to please corporate sponsors and are turning Pride into just another big gay village party without any substance, they have been running deficits for years, they give the biggest contracts to friends and family without tender. All of these things they do wrong and yet people jump to blame one organization (QuAIA) and xtra for doing what it always has done - which is to give a voice to alternate ideas, away from mainstream media. Fuck, even with gay marriage and tv shows like Modern Family and the desire to be *accepted by society* either we haven't learned a damn thing or with all these normalizing advances we've forgotten what brought us to this point. I praise xtra for being a voice for polyamoury, QuAIA, HIV criminalization, sex workers etc etc because we wouldn't hear anything about these ideas and the people behind them without it. If you want mainstream read the star or the sun, vote for that pig Rob Ford, shop at Sears and fuck your monogamous partner, with a gold band and a white picket fence and howdy doody suburban neighbour.

Unlike Pride, Xtra is a clique
It's quite obvious that Xtra and QuAIA are going to try to stack the next annual meeting of Pride with their supporters and takeover the Pride board of directors. But, at least Pride (as a non-profit organization that does not pay taxes) allows ordinary members of the public to become members and vote at annual meetings. It contrast, Xtra is owned by Pink Triangle Press (also a non-profit organization that does not pay taxes). Pink Triangle Press does not allow ordinary members of the public to become members and vote at annual meetings. Instead, it is an undemocratic, self-perpetuating clique of Leftists. If Pink Triangle Press wants to run itself as a private fiefdom without public accountability, it should be taxed as a private business. Pink Triangle Press should start paying its fair share of taxes on the revenue it collects from paid advertising and its online sex/dating websites.

Xtra bashing == sad whining
The Xtra bashing here is hilarious to read: especially since they are the ONLY media organization in the city that actually aired both perspectives of the story, despite what the haters may claim. Pride is not the sacred cow that everyone makes it out to be, and should not be handled with kid gloves. The Pride Toronto Board has made MANY mistakes this year. They have proven wholly incompetent financially, running increasingly large deficits. They have proven themselves to be completely out of touch with the greater community on many fronts: whether it's with Blackness Yes, the trans community, and with Free Speech issues. Pride's initial decision to to side with censors over completely legal, legitmate (if uncomfortable) free speech after being targeted by a coordinated, right-wing, anti-LGBT propaganda campaign shat all over 30 years of history of political speech that Pride has come to represent. Pride Toronto needs to be closely scrutinized. I'm happy that Xtra is not standing back as pom-pom waving cheerleaders watching as the organization runs itself into the ground. If you care at all about Pride (and gay liberation in general), you should count your lucky stars for Xtra and Pink Triangle Press.

Finally!
I'm SO glad to finally see the community standing up against Xtra's biased journalism and propaganda. Colin - I 100%, word-for-word agree with your statement, and everyone I know also feels the same way. Pride Toronto is following the same process they do every year for the AGM. They're running an organization and they shouldn't have to abide by rules or dates that the community pushes on them. ...And for those worried about the financial deficit of the organization, perhaps you should donate some money or volunteer to help the organization with fundraising.

da what?
yes, Isn't Xtra too much standing up for free speech. Both sides were presented well and aside from Xtra, who is holding Pride accoutable. Xtra does not claim to be the one voice of our community, as if there is ONE community anyway. And why should we expect PRIDE to be above criticism? Where are these crazy divisions you're talking about in the community? Makes me laugh. Whiners don't even know what they are whining about! Kudos to Xtra for being the only media to cover the whole Pride thing with integrity and style. All you haters, get your pleated khaki shorts ready for next year's Pride..It'll be a doozy!

Xtra does not represent the gay community
I would like to see a more mainstream gay media outlet in Toronto. Xtra is good for what it is, but it is not a neutral news source and it doesn't represent the entire gay community (as it claims). If there is to be a bias, let it be towards mainstream gay men. Most people in the gay community are ordinary gay men, so where is their newspaper?

A guide to help you understand Dan's post
Just a guide to help people understand Dan's post: (1) "haters" = "anyone who disagrees with me"; (2) "greater community" = "me and my 12 politically radical friends" (3) "censors" = "mainstream people who want gay affairs to remain civil and free of religious, ethnic and political disturbances" (4) "free speech" = "my right to make Jews feel uncomfortable and excluded in a fashionably anti-semitic way" (5) "you should count your lucky stars for Xtra and Pink Triangle Press" = "there's no other gay press in this country and leftist radicals have taken it over just like they will take over Pride, so get used to it"

community involvement is a good thing
@Colin: Clearly stated in this article is that Xtra has been in discussions with members of the Pride board - aka, working with them. They have invited them to participate in this all-candidates meeting - even to co-sponsor it if they are interested. PCFS has asked PT to come and ask questions to those running. This is all part of a process of development and constructive debate which should be a part of all elections. @Peter: Why are you threatening people with violence? There are members of PCFS and the Village who came to Canada as refugees - facing violence and threats in their own country like the one you just gave. There is nothing funny about your comment. There are many members of PCFS that don't agree with QuAIA's politics.. if you don't believe this, then you should have come to any number of the public meetings and verified this for yourself. @Tim: PCFS and Xtra have nothing to do with why these 3 Pride Board members are "being replaced". Their terms are up; there is an election coming up at the end of September and so other people will be voted in. This article from Xtra is a very straight forward piece telling people when a pre-election meeting will be. Providing information on candidates and elections is one of the most important jobs of a newspaper. @C. Tam: Giving donations to an organization that is not being fiscally responsible is a self-defeating act. Healthy community-based organizations are in a constant process of receiving advice and recommendations from their members and the greater community. This is a positive and constructive process, and not a negative thing. As Margaret Ngai (interim co-chair of the Pride board) said of PCFS: “They want Pride to represent something, and obviously Pride exists to serve its membership, so the members can definitely shape the strategic direction.”

kinda funny
it's mildly hilarious all these dopes complaining that xtra acts as "censors" and only allows for the voice of those who are critical of pride... and they are commenting on it right here on Xtra's site!! Ha! Pride tried to kick its critics out of the fucking parade... but xtra are the ones who are actually censors... all voiced on xtra's webspace! oh and btw- the idea that pride lost money because of quaia is an anti-intellectual statement of the lamest kind... pride claimed that interpride had a problem with quaia... and interpride publicly contradicted them. they claimed canada council of the arts turned down a grant request because of quaia... and canada council publicly contradicted them... the marquee tourism fiasco was obviously just pride having no clue what it was doing... then they blame quaia about it after they fucked up and spent money they never had and never should have expected to get from the Harper govt.

Transphobic leaders?
Pride Toronto appoints Chad Simon as new director for one-year term- http://www.pridetoronto.com/news/new-director-appointed-to-one-year-term/ .....is this the same narrow-minded, uneducated and arrogant Chad Simon bashing transsexuals and their right to receive funding for sex reassignment surgery in Ontario in this Xtra video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT27Qjn76wo (around 2:30 mark). ....Is this Pride Toronto's idea of a leader?? PRIDE needs to re-evaluate its mission
The Pride organizers have done a fantastic job. Anyone can just criticize and offer opinions, but to actually run the show takes social, financial and organizational skills, and experience, intelligence and dedication. Choices have to be made to include the most advantageous things and exclude things which may be detrimental or sabotage the event. The radical screamers denounced the Pride Committee's choices with accusations of censorship. The choice of the volatile sensationalist word "censorship" was to get as much publicity and rabble-rousin as possible, with disregard for the outcome of the whole event. It was another excuse to scream down the street unrestrained, like children. It is unfortunate that the Pride Committee caved in to their ransom demands, as they do not represent the whole community. Since Pride did get so huge, and since we now have the freedoms that the original Pride protests sought, we now have to decide what the Pride Parade should be about -and- should not be about. Can anyone who asks be part of the Pride Parade? NO! the Parade has gotten too big, and choices have to be made. Some groups just don't belong in the Pride Parade, because they have a very different focus. Pride needs to re-evaluate their list of "Mission+Vision+Values" and stick to it.

New Director appointed - WTF!?!
less than a month away from the AGM and Pride, which is supposed to be entering this community consulation process appoints a new director?!!! If this person is right for the job, don't you think he could have stood for election like everyone else in the community who can and wants to will? This is incredibly bad politics on Pride's part. What are they afraid of really? That some concerned community members would run for the board? Wow, that would be a change. Also, who ever heard of putting out a call for the co-chairs and the directors? Usually an organization puts out a call for new board members and decides once the full compliment of the Board is elected who will fill what position. Who is in charge at Pride? The board seems as incompetent as Tracey Sandilands....It's a sorry state of affairs when you can smell the fear at Pride Toronto so bad that you want to laugh. These are not community leaders, these are community fools, and the best thing for "OUR" Pride would be to see Tracey out of there and the Board step down. If they really think they can do such a great job, run again, but let the community decide, not a bunch of self-serving people, cut off from what the community is and what it means. Viva Pride, good-bye Tracey and the Board.

First off, I used the wrong spelling for complement! I hate when I do that, but I was angry! And all I'm saying if this guy is so good, he could have waited until the AGM, which is less than a month away to run. And what a joke with this consultation process supposibly happening. Pride doesn't give a shit about the community...I'm just not sure what they do care about and that's the saddest thing.

Try picking people that represent us
I think PRIDE TORONTO needs to go back to it's roots. We need to focus on the gay community rather than people involved in the sex trade, those against things that are not even LGBT related, they are just trying to get attention. Why is this committee letting them ? It's one of the many reasons why they are not successful, and that's sad actually. This is no longer a pride about showing the rest of the world our good qualities, but flaunting or sexual depravity and expecting to garner funding for it or promoting an issue that has no pride relevance. I for one was not at all impressed with the choices of the grand marshals this year ? No, I am not transphobic, nor am I one to tell someone what to do in their private life. However, when the two people who lead the parade are directly involved in acts that lead to dangerous paths - "I don't see any PRIDE in that."

I'm Paying Attention - RU?
Chad Simon is replacing Keith Clarkson who last attended a PT Board Mtg sometime in 2009 since he resigned to take a new job out in BC in January ... http://www.hollywoodnorthreport.com/article.php?Article=7816. Why did PT wait 8 months before replacing a departing Board Member? And if you're gonna wait 8 months, why not have the new member ELECTED properly and for a new 3 year term??

PT Panel Discussion --Educated and Cultured People
The PT Directors panel discussion last night was civil. No one insulted anyone. They stated their opinions in a clear calm fashion. It was easy to follow. They showed their humanity with some humour. They showed that they were knowledgeable by providing pertinent details. The panelists and the questioners were respectful and honest in providing and clarifying information. These are obviously educated and cultured people. Why not follow their example with commentary? Enough of the useless rabid pitbull ranting and personal insults--from both sides. We just have to wait for the AGM and their future actions.
