New burger joint to open in old Zelda's spot
NEWS / Owner gearing to 'family-friendly' crowd

What was once a landmark Village hotspot with dancing drag queens and a patio filled with cosmo-sipping socialites is set to open as the Acme Burger Company.

The new Church St restaurant will start slinging burgers May 12.

The former home of Zelda’s has been chopped in half and is now being leased out as two spaces. Acme owner Diaa Khuffash hopes the new eatery will become a popular family hangout with a packed patio in the summer.

“I’ve heard so much about Zelda’s. I heard it was [legendary],” he says. “I hope we will keep some of that spirit here at Acme. We’ll try our best to be the place where things happen.”

“But mostly we want to appeal to families. From what I’ve seen, [the Village] has mostly bars and clubs.”
Diaa Khuffash is busy renovating the Acme Burger Company for the May 12 opening.

Khuffash says the Acme Burger Company has a liquor licence, but don’t expect to see him selling beer or cocktails any time soon. “I want to keep this a family-friendly place. That patio will not sell beer or liquor.”

“I like the area. I think it’s a great community, as well as different, and I like things that are different,” says the Mississauga resident. “Plus, we sell a quality product that people in this neighbourhood will appreciate. We only sell 100 percent certified Angus beef.”

“We only use the beef chuck patty. There are no other ingredients in it, not even salt and pepper. It’s just the meat chopped up and served to people… This is the best possible meat available for humans to eat from a cow.”

Before beginning renovations in March, Khuffash admits, he hadn’t spent too much time in the gaybourhood, but he says he’s excited to build relationships with customers.

Khuffash says he is already working with the Church and Wellesley Business Improvement Area to get involved in fundraising for HIV/AIDS in July, and he plans to help out during Pride Week. “We intend to be involved in the community.”

The north side of the building has not been leased out yet. Khuffash says he’s heard rumours that Tim Hortons is in negotiations.

Khuffash's capacity is 30 seats inside and 26 on the patio. This will be the Acme Burger Company’s third location; the two other locations are also in Toronto.

In 2009, Zelda’s, one of the anchor resto/bars in the Church-Wellesley Village (it first opened in the neighbourhood in 1997), abruptly closed up shop and vamoosed during the night of Sept 28. Zelda's Living Well reopened at 692 Yonge St on Nov 3, 2010.

Corporatization?
Acme Burger is hardly a multinational conglomerate. The article states that Acme Burger only has three locations. Diaa Khuffash is a small businessman. Church Street is composed of many small businesses, many of them owned by straights. I suspect government-funded welfare centres on Church Street like The 519 have a larger budget than most of the small businesses and stores on Church Street.

Another burger joint ?
I was really hoping for something like a Dairy Queen in the old Zelda's location - complete with a drag queen as the franchisee of course !

Is this what we need?
I think this is the last thing the Gay Village needs. We already have a number of burger joints in the neighbourhood, including Hero Burger, right across the street. Zelda's added some queer fun to Church Street. This will help turn our Village into a just another bland, ordinary commercial strip. If this keeps up, soon there won't be a Gay Village. I'm not happy at all.

The only tenant the landlord could get
The Zelda's space was vacant for months. It sounds like Acme Burger Company was the only tenant the landlord could get. The posters above who are opposed to Acme Burger's presence need to understand that the "gay village" on Church Street has been in decline for years as more and more LGBT people prefer to socialize elsewhere (many LGBT people find Church Street to be dingy - especially since The 519 is a magnet for street people). Even Xtra is leaving Church Street to move to better premises at Yonge and Carlton.

Market research???
Does this guy know he is locating in a gay neighborhood? And no alcohol on his patio? Families? Is he a homophobe? Doesn't sound like the recipe for success I was hoping for. But then again the space has been empty for -what?- 18 months. Doesn't sound like my kind of place.

Alcohol & Family Friendly
It's a very Ontario declaration to state the serving alcohol on an open patio is the equivalency of being unfriendly for families. Regardless, there's not that many nuclear families in this part of the city anyway, so he's really just taking a bite out of his own bottom line.

Eat the Meat in The Village?
How well is the burger joint doing across the street? There is need for another? I have a sneaking suspicion this concept just may not work. As much as the Village has been gentrifying in some respects and not quite as 'gay' as it used to be, it still IS the gay village, for all intents and purposes. I have a hard time picturing families out on the patio eating burgers. I could have imagined, however, denizens of the Village out coiffing pints and having burgers. Oh well, just have to wait and see....
