UPDATE 22 OCT 5 pm -
Police released more details of their investigation into the Oct 18 slaying of 27-year-old gay man Chris Skinner.

Skinner was walking home on Adelaide St from a birthday party for his sister in the Entertainment district when he was “assaulted by between two and four males,” det Stacey Gallant, the lead investigator on the case said in an Oct 22 press conference.

“He was beaten to the ground and kicked when he was on the ground,” before the attackers returned to their black SUV. Once in the car, they “ran over Mr Skinner with both the front and rear tires. They accelerated the car away from the scene and continued to go east on Adelaide St.”

Several eyewitnesses have come forward to police and provided detailed accounts of the incident. Police believe the driver deliberately ran over Skinner.

The driver of the SUV is described as “male with light skin, short hair in a military style, wearing a tight black tank top, similar to an undershirt.”

The make, model, and licence number of the SUV are still unknown, but it is described as black with a light coloured tan or grey interior and having high-intensity headlights. Video of the SUV approaching the crime scene was shown at the press conference.
RUN DOWN. Chris Skinner was murdered in Toronto in the early hours of Oct 18.

Police continue to search through security videos culled from their own CCTV cameras in the Entertainment District and from other businesses along Adelaide as far east as the DVP. They say they captured images of both Skinner and the SUV minutes before the attack began.

Gallant also told reporters that police are not treating the murder as a hate crime.

“We have explored that possibility and we don’t have any evidence to corroborate that,” he says. “As the investigation goes forward, if that comes up again we will investigate that,” suggesting that the fight could also have started as a traffic dispute.

“There was a lot of construction on Adelaide. [Skinner] may have been walking in the roadway and bumped into the car and they may have taken offence to that,” Gallant said.

Gallant appealed to any other witnesses to come forward, noting that video evidence suggests that a number of taxi drivers may have seen the attack against Skinner as they drove past.

He also appealed to anyone involved in the crime to turn themselves in to police.

“We know there were at least one, two, or three people in the car with him. If it was [the driver’s] decision alone to run over Skinner, then it’s all going to fall on him. If the others in the car had some influence over that, then they are just as culpable as he is. They are all culpable for the assault that happened outside of the vehicle,” Gallant said.

Skinner's funeral was today at a private ceremony in Uxbridge, his hometown.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Stacy Gallant at 416−808−7410 and Detective Doug Dunstan at 416−808−7406, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−8477 or online at www.222tips.com. And Xtra here.

UPDATE 20 OCT 8am -
Ryan Cooke didn’t know that his fiancé had been brutally murdered seven hours earlier when he posted on his Facebook page: “HEY...does anyone know where Chris is?” at 10:04am on Sun Oct 18.

Cooke had lost his phone and no one could reach him. Police had been called to the corner of Adelaide St E and Victoria St at 3:05am by several eyewitnesses who had seen Cooke’s fiancé Chris Skinner attacked by a group of men who beat him to the ground then ran over him with an SUV. Skinner was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Skinner is the 43rd homicide of 2009 in the city of Toronto. Hours earlier, Skinner and Cooke had been celebrating Skinner’s sister’s birthday in the entertainment district. Skinner decided to leave the party and walk home alone. Details of the attack are being kept under wraps as the police investigation continues, but it is known that Skinner got into an altercation with the occupants of a black SUV before he was beaten, and that after running him over the attackers fled east on Adelaide in their SUV.

The number of attackers has not been confirmed, but it is believed there were at least two and possibly three or four. The make and model of the SUV and its licence plate number were not yet known, but police will be combing over surveillance video from the area to see if it can be determined.

Friends of Skinner suspect that the killing may have been a hate crime, but police haven’t drawn that conclusion.

“No, there’s not at all any indication that there were homophobic elements to the attack,” says Det Stacey Gallant.

But that doesn’t sit well with Skinner’s friends who are struggling to find a motive for the murder.

"Not a single person who knows him would say that he would cause a ruckus,” says Skinner’s long-time friend Craig Lund, “but he would stand up for himself if he was called on anything. I find that Toronto Police very rarely jump to the conclusion that homophobia exists.”

Skinner, 27, lived with Cooke and they planned to get married next summer. He worked as a graphic designer at Endeavour Marketing. Cooke could not be reached for comment at press time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Stacy Gallant at 416−808−7410 and Detective Doug Dunstan at 416−808−7406, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416−222−8477 or online at www.222tips.com. And Xtra here.

OCT 19 Xtra.ca Staff - The Toronto Police Service reports that 27-year-old Chris Skinner was killed in the early morning hours of Oct 18.

Police were called to the Adelaide St E and Victoria St area at 3 am to investigate a report of an injured pedestrian.

Police said in a press release that an altercation took place between Skinner and the occupants of a black SUV. Skinner was knocked to the ground. The attackers then returned to their vehicle and ran Skinner over with it.

Police say the SUV fled eastbound on Adelaide St. Skinner was taken to hospital where he died.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477 and Xtra here.

Xtra will update as information becomes available.

Inaccurate headline
This vile murder is described as having taken place in the "Adelaide St E and Victoria St area". Given this, the headline erroneously refers to "Toronto's entertainment district. That district includes parts of Adelaide St W, but none of Adelaide St E. The murder's location would be more accurately described as "near Toronto's financial district".

Hi Peter: Thanks for your comment. We were referring really to liquor service zoning provisions, not the Entertainment District BIA. But point taken. How about "downtown Toronto"? I updated the story.

It is looking like Tor is getting very dangerous!
After dong some initial research I can say it it certainly looking like a hate crime (circumstantially) . That hour in the financial district is pretty quiet at 3AM. A tragic series of events seem to have happened--another disastrous wrong place/ wrong time murder? Police say a confrontation ensued between Chris and men in an SUV which ran over him. Unbelievable! I have written about crime in Toronto for decades and I must say it is getting scarier lately--what with David Dewees' tragic suicide the week before last and now this tragedy. Let's hope the police homicide dept really follow this one through throroughly and quickly. What a sad happening on the day Toronto won Gay World Pride 2014 which its emphasis on human rights! More actual reports will come from xtra reporters as they do their research, but it aint looking good to this freelance crime reporter....

He was a great friend
I grew up with Chris and all I can say is that the earth is missing a beautiful soul. Chris was an amazing friend who never thought twice about helping someone. I am so angry that he had to die and especially in such an awful manner as this. Chris, I will miss you forever and I will always be thankful for the friendship that we shared. I will remember you as the 16 year old kid, making faces at me to try to get me to smile. Rest in peace. Love you!

District Irrelevant
Well Matt, looks like you've appeased someone (Peter) with your correction of the "district" in which this heinous atrocity took place. Quite frankly, call it what you will. You may also call it "St. Lawrence Market" area which would also be accurate. Regardless, a young man was brutally murdered within the downtown core, on a busy saturday night on one of Toronto's main cross streets. Whether the "ent district" is heavily policed or not is irrelevant, perhaps if "downtown" was heavily policed then innocent people would not become victims of (hate) crimes. Let's analyze the location for a moment, since you've drawn such attention to the "district" and surroundings. You might know that the Courthouse Nightclub is adjacent to the crime scene, I would say that the Courthouse Nightclub is a hotspot for "entertainment" driven people, perhaps qualifying this as a sort of nouveau "entertainment" district, hmm? Regardless, the ill spoken, unrefined 905 flock to the Courthouse as with every downtown nightclub, particular in the "entertainment district" and they are the plight of the core. I happen to live on the next block to where this crime was committed, Church & Adelaide, and I can tell you matter of factly that the quality and character of people who reside in the vicinity do not represent thugged murderers. We have rif raf coming downtown, to where we actually live, to stir shit up and cause unnecessary disturbances because they are so poorly cultured in the outskirts. Borrowing daddy's SUV and then running someone over sounds like a real sweet Saturday night. If this was a "hate crime" or a "gay bashing" of any sort, I am going to thrive on the thought of what will happen to these pathetic murderers in the Pen. You want to see a gay bashing? hah. Open up boys. Chris Skinner was a son, and a brother, and a fiance, and a damn good friend.

Quiet, there's a gay bashing !
I was beaten unconscious a few years ago right in front of Wellesely station on a Thursday night around 1:30am. I was walking by on my way to Bloor station I noticed a guy on the street and smiled and he jumped out at me and started shouting "You think I'm a fag!" and proceeded with his pummeling and threw me against a metal pole. I was unconsious until waking up in an ambulance, then out again and woke up in the hospital. After a few days of waiting for the police to follow up with me I called them and they reviewed the report with me. Apparently in a moment of lucidity an officer asked if I wanted to pursue the case, and I said no. They also asked if I had done anything that may have provoked him and my response on the report was "I don't know maybe". Um, officers I WAS FUCKING UNCONSCIOUS! Wrong time to be asking those questions. And I had been drinking so they made it seem like I had it coming. Do you know how much extra work is involved when it is a hate crime? Look what happened to that guy in Thunder Bay - Charged with assualt for defending himself. All this to say the police will rarely if ever be on our side. Although I hope the murderers of this man are brought to justice the police will use every measure to ensure this is not reported as a hate crime.

Toronto now a very dangerous place to walk around
Excellent update on the horrible Skinner murder--better and more up to date than the Star's account. Tragically the murder weapon in this case-- the tire marks--are excellent forensic markers. Plus with all the CCTV cameras downtown the cop homicide unit will have some leads to say nothing of CK's sister's first hand account. (my heart goes out to her and Chris' friends...) It is now open to whether =this was a random act by homicidal maniacs, a wrong place, Wrong time" story, or some kind of "hate" crime. One thing is certain--Toronto has become a very dangerous place to walk around. One has to walk defensively--the way I did in NYC when I lived there decades ago--always looking for potential problem people who might rob or harm you. A sorry truth.

Crime in Toronto
James, you keep focusing on how Toronto is becoming a very dangerous place, yet all the evidence says the opposite. Do you realize crime in Toronto is going down? Toronto is the safest major city in Canada, if not North America. (Check Maclean's magazine crime survey) Toronto comes in as the 29th most dangerous city in Canada behind Vancouver, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Calgary, Halifax and many more Canadian cities. Crime happens everywhere, including gay bashings and murders but over-all, Toronto is a safe place to live. The reality is a gay bashing or worse, can happen anywhere, at any time. There is no point walking around being paranoid and fearful in your own city. I certainly have no fear when I'm out in Toronto and I live right near the murder scene. The area is not dangerous at all.

A likely scenario...
A the risk of utter speculation, there is little doubt in my mind that this horrifying tragedy occurred as a car-load of hateful, ignorant, drunken suburban men were making their way out of the city on the way back to their tract homes in some guarded suburb on the other side of the 401. The notion that Toronto is dangerous is undoubtedly true. It is, however, a bitter irony that in this case a member of our community was most likely slain by intruders... a pack of the well-to-do thugs who descend on the bars and clubs of the downtown core every weekend. The homophobic slurs, scorn and intimidation spewed from the windows of their passing cars, to which we are accustomed, are one thing. In this case, it seems their hateful aggression was taken to a chilling, tragic extreme. My heart goes out to this young man's family, friends and fiancee. I only hope the Toronto Police will wake up to the fact this was indeed a hate crime, perpetrated not by some seedy criminal element of downtown Toronto, but by a more insidious threat - hateful, ignorant outsiders who can tear into the heart of our city, then make their getaway up the DVP in a speeding SUV.

crime rates/random violence
You are right about the statistics Gary--overall crime rates are down-- which is why it is even more troubling. And there appears to be more random violence downtown. But overall even murder rates are down (most are family-related or gang-related). Still, without being paranoid, one should be careful and wary when out --especially when it is night. (Ironically there are more gangsters and gangs now but less crime...Hmnn......As I learned while on cop liaison committees for many years, the statistics only come from reported crimes.)

A little thought
With the limited details all anyone can do is speculate. From the outset there seems to be a strong link to club culture, Chris Skinner was on his way home from one and there is very good possibility that a group of men in a dark coloured SUV were in the area for the nightlife. An SUV like a black button up shirt adds to the overall look and presentation of a group of clubbers. Once again it is circumstantial but downtown Torontonians do not recreationaly go driving in SUVs at that time of Saturday night. One other consideration suggestive of a hate crime was that the victim was outnumbered.

Entertainment District
I have worked and lived in the entertainment district for years and it has not mattered that I am gay. It can be extremely dangerous on Fri. and Sat. nights. I do not think Toronto has become anymore dangerous than any other large city, however, you still must be careful of your surroundings. Doesnt matter if your gay or straight, in this area when you have a bunch of 905ers drinking and acting like idiots you need to be cautious. Do not leave clubs intoxicated by yourself, try and travel with friends and try as best as possible to avoid altercations with the yahoos. My heart goes out to this young man and his family and may he rest in peace and whoever is responsible for this horrific crime you need to do the right thing and turn yourself(s) in!

There is too much to say
I am having trouble containing my anger. I raised my kids, one of whom was a soul mate of Christopher and the other went to school with his sister and cousin, to understand that life, as a rule, is not fair. But this is too much! My daughter is devastated by this obscenity and I have trouble thinking that she will ever see life through the slightly rose-coloured glasses that Chris helped to tint. He was full of life and was always a pleasure to talk to whenever the occasion presented itself. Unfortunately neither me nor mine are possessed of a belief structure that assumes that Chris is in a better place. He is just gone and that is wrong. Nor can I find solace in the thought that it is likely that the savage Neanderthals that did this will get their just desserts on whatever passes for judgement day. These animals, for that is what they are, with no essence of human civility, are possibly the best argument that there has ever been for forced sterilization since abortion passed them by. They are obviously unable to keep their basest of urges in check. What else passes for a good time for these morons? Theft? Rape? Drug trafficking? Perhaps they have a belief structure that forgives them for taking action against those that do not have the same life style. Exactly why I find it impossible to entertain any form of religious belief. Any society that allows this sort thing to happen needs serious re-vamping. At the risk of sounding a touch Orwellian I say better cameras on every corner, GPS locators in every vehicle, forced sterilization of violent offenders (sorry for the redundancy), any number of deterrents to stifle violence and hatred is a small price to pay. Privacy is highly overrated relative to the concept of keeping beautiful individuals like Chris alive. Sorry to go on...but as the title suggests...there is too much to say. Try to keep the love alive, people. That really is all we have. Like I tell my daughter..Chris would not want to cause you to be sad.

re: A Call to Arms
Kieran, I wholeheartedly agree. While the current police systems that we have HIRED (via taxes that WE PAY) do good in general, they alone are not enough to protect the general populace from each other. If WE put our votes and ourselves into HIRING people to protect us (dare I say just what the current police are-- HIRED by US-- even though they tend to publicize themselves as an almost foretold and pre-ordained bunch), then you can call on me. It's time we had more than one [possibly working more under the Government of Ontario's general restrictive guidelines and political agendas, like a woman's right to contest a ruling against them...) group of people HIRED to protect us, one that actually SERVES.AND.PROTECTS, in all respects, regardless of scenario. Regarding the attackers-- their actions will speak for themselves for the rest of their lives. This is who they are and they must know no other true joy. Sad-- very, very pitiful (and not in an insulting way-- actually sad!) May Chris be remembered fondly-- his character will speak on for generations. This is the good that can be gathered from this. This whole thing is just disgusting, whether it happened in the core of downtown or any other place in Ontario, there are gay people everywhere. My daughter is gay and reading this makes me so afraid that I don't even want her to go outside right now. These people are not human, you beat a man and then run him over. The Sun published McVety that day
The Toronto Sun published an article, Oct 20 on page 8, slamming World Pride coming to Toronto. I am surprised nobody made the connection. These attackers sound like the types who would read the Sun every day. The Sun article started off quoting anti-gay Rev. Charles McVety, saying World Pride was nothing more than a sex parade. People read this stuff and they take it out on guys like Chris. I can't believe the Sun would do this immediately following the attack.

This terrible crime indicates that the battle for Gay Rights is certainly not over. I suppose Gay men and Women have assumed the embrace of Hetro Society. since the legalization of Gay marriage and the transformation from "Gay Pride" to "Pride". Step outside of the Gay Village and see how well openly Gay folk are accepted. It is clear that this struggle is far from concluded. It will be interesting to see how the police proceed with this event. Traditionally they have put more effort into passing out traffic tickets than solving any crime involving Gay men or Woman. The now deceased previous owner of the Barn. is but one example of a brutal Gay murder that remains open. I fear that if these criminals are not brought to justice then this will send a clear signal to other potential Gay Bashers that this is an activity that can be persued with out consequence.

Trusting the Police Critical to Combat Gay Bashing
I have to say it's sad that so many people have posted that they have faced violence or are afraid of it but won't trust the police to help them out. Working with the Ottawa Police Service Liaison Committee for GLBT Communities in Ottawa I have met many officers from TO and Ottawa who would be perfectly willing and able to help. Often the biggest complaint they have is that people won't report a crime when it happens, leaving them with out the necessary information to follow-up on crimes. Don't let violence and other crimes go unmarked. Contact the police and your community organisations when you need help. It goes on and on and on!
The savage death of anyone always makes my heart cry. I send my deepest condolences to Chris's Fiance, Family and Friends.Regardless of whether this was a hate crime or not it just reflects the horrid reality of the world we live in. A world that increasingly becomes more violent. In all times there have been savages and in today's world their acts can not be hidden so we are exposed to them always and it breaks our hearts. I trust the Toronto police will use every available source possible to track down the COWARDS that took the life of a man who has been described in these posts as one of good character, loving and loved. My husband and I were lucky enough to spend time in Toronto 2 years ago on Gay Pride weekend and found wonderful hospitality from our brothers and sisters in both the gay and straight people we were lucky enough to meet.Toronto is no different than any other city in Canada, we are a great, compassionate, caring people who unfortunately still have a segment of our population that are just plain hateful. Not being of religious persuasion I pray to all of my fellow citizens to constantly use your power to put into power those people who are dedicated to ensuring that criminals of all ilks are persued, caught and punished appropriatley. Chris Skinner is dead, never to return and hearts are shredded. We all must never forget those who die no matter how they died but we must all do our best to change the attitudes of those who would committ crimes against a peaceful society and when they are caught we must not be fearful to be sure the most extreme punishment reflecting the crime is applied. To Chris's fiance I express my tears in writing, I hope you heal as soon as possible and don't give up on love. If I were to lose my Husband or he was to lose his I know that it would be the most devastating time in our lives. Use your heart of love to help make the world a safer place for all. Finally to all I say use your common sense always, always, always.

Somebody Has to Know Who's SUV That Was!
To honour Chris, we can't let this tragedy become a cold case. Since the mainstream national and local press have ignored this story, I suggest everyone posts this link to your Facebook or whatever until these thugs are brought to justice. "Hate crime" or otherwise, violence in our city is never acceptable. Everyone should be outraged, and for the sake of Chris's family and friends, we can all do our part to force the people involved out of hiding. If multiple people commit a murder, SOMEBODY who knows them will find out, and whoever that is needs to contact authorities ASAP!

very active cop case now; clues abound; don't desp
It is unlikely to become a cold case. The active investigation is given at least 3-6 months, if not more. The cops have a lot to work with:CCTV footage, witnesses, and tire marks. And possible the conscience (if they have any) of one of the passengers. It was a terrible tragedy and the homicide department will want to solve it. They have already said publiclly that it "was cowardly act." and asked for the passengers to come forward out of decency. The cops are not yet the problem. As for the media, we certainly don't want the Rosi DiManno treatment, eh? And xtra is going to be on it until it is solved and then for the trials, etc. The savage killer(s) of Chris Skinner are not very likely to get away with it in my seasoned cop/crime reporter point of view (though the killer(s) of Janko NAglic did and while there is yet no charges in the Ross Magill homicide of last July (2008) it is still an active case under investigation.

City vs Suburbs
As a gay downtown resident, I can't count how many times nighttime visitors from the suburbs have started fights on the street, done extremely dangerous things with their cars on downtown roads, screamed ethnic and sexual slurs out their windows, or in this case, run over an innocent man in their SUV... I think it's time Toronto adopted border controls.

WHY??????????
For the rest of their lives, anything with a reflection, a plate or knife in a restaurant, a mirror, a window in a store... I want them to see Chris Skinner's face. YES, that was his name and he had friends. How any of you that have knowledge of this incident can live with yourselves is beyond me.

Sad and angry
My heart goes out to his fiance, friends and family. It's awful that this could happen. I understand the police need to keep information under wraps, but to think this is almost certainly a hate crime is naive. I feel sad and angry.

With Sorrow
To his fiance, family and friends..... Chris will forever remain in your hearts and may he never be forgotten. A face with a smile, a laugh, a loving heart, and beauty. I didn't know Chris but wanted to extend my sympathy to you all. Gaybashing effects us all regardless where we are.

A place loved to travel to
I used to travel from Ohio , USA to Toronto at least once a year. It was always a wonderful place. I always had fun and was treated with respect. I have not been able to visit the last couple years, I can't be lieve it has changed that much. I never felt in danger on my visits but would think twice now. My sympathies go out to all Chris' family and friends, it is such a sad day!!

police presser show SUV that killed Chris Skinner
The police press conference today showed video of the black SUV and revealed they have several witnesses. (CITY-TV covered it pretty well broadcasting most of the presser and showing the video a number of times)> The chief suspect was described as "a light skinned" guy who was "wearing a tight black tank top". There was a taxi in the vicinity at the time of the murder as well as several witnesses. The driving over of Chris was clearly "intentional" according to Det Stacey Gallant, and " a very cowardly act". They said there was "no evidence" yet of hate crime-related element. Given these details, it is likely police will be hot on the trial of the suspect (s). And there is forensic information as well as video and real people who were nearby. I am optimistic that the homicide dept will make an arrest(s).

Why hasn't a public vigil in toronto been planned
I guess it is because i have been shocked and saddened by this story that i have continually been reading any stories related to this case. I have been hoping that some sort of vigil would be planned to show support for Chris's family and also put pressure of the police to identify this as a hate crime. ANyone know if anything for the general public has been planned (by our gay leaders). Don't toronto gays have any activism / community in them anymore.

Vigil is now organized for Chris Skinner-Sunday
There is a vigil now organized for Sunday evening at 8pm starting at Church and Wellesley. (see Facebook. Christopher Skinner Vigil). I am unfortunately out of town but will be there in spirit. It was a tragic and senseless killing and I am somewhat hoepful that the killer(s) will be found out and charged, given everything from CCTV camera video to witnesses and forensics --and importantly, now the public pressure. My heart goes out to Chris' family and friends.

Hate - to beat someone up, then return to your car and Run them over in your SUV- malicious, vicious .. I've been haunted by this picture in my mind all week, thinking whether he was conscious when ... I thank the people for organizing the vigil and will try to get some people out:(

Media
I don't know why the police aren't going on TV and warning the other people who were in the car that night, to come foreward with information or they will also be going to trial as accomplices. There were 4 people in that car, maybe if they fear going to jail, one of them might come foreward to name the murderer. A guilty conscience might do it too if the police make this case higher profile. This murder seems to be on the back burner but we can't allow this to happen. These guys have to be brought to justice.

This horrible trag kicks us in the gut as gay men
Good suggestion Gary but Det Stacey GAllant did that the other day on CITY-TV very effectively--trying to get to the conscience of one of the passengers and if they cooperated they might not be charged. And the media has been covering this more than other murders this week. (e.g. A twenty something black man). Remember it took nine months or so before they made an arrest in the Janko case--and of course they later lost that case. So effective homicide case work takes time and patience and ingenuity. This horrible tragedy kicks us in the gut as gay men in Toronto, but the homicide department seems to be doing their job and remember it is still very early in their investigation. And the vigil and xtra coverage and letters like yours will keep the pressure on them.

Chris Provoked attackers by Tapping ?
Full Site News Headlines Investigators say hate crime not reason for Christopher Skinner's death 680News staff 2009-10-25 01:46 The latest in the investigation into last weekend's murder of a 27-year-old Christopher Skinner, says the actions were not those of a hate crime, but were provoked by the victim tapping on the suspects vehicle while attempting to hail a cab. A little thought
Orphan Gordie If Skinner's hand inadvertently brushed the SUV in motion (most likely while trying to hail a cab) then it will be hard to prove it was a hate crime. Could the hand brushing the SUV have gotten the attention of the driver who then realized Skinner was gay and proceeded to beat him for it? at this point its hard to tell, the Police are focusing on making an arrest - after that is done then is the time to pressure the Police to rule out hate. But if brushing someone's moving SUV with your hand is a motive to beat a person severely and run them over this is a crime not just focused on a gay person but also a pedestrian and fellow citizen, either way the driver who committed this murder needs to be held accountable for his actions.

We Walk Free
Living up the street from where Chris was killed; I walk that intersection daily. I cross this intersection sometimes for work or cross it as I go to Union Station to catch a train to go home and visit my family. Crossing that intersection will never be the same for me and I know many other people will feel the same way about this crossroad. The crossroad that took a friend, who's smile glowed, away. Chris was very bright and respected by many people, including myself, who have crossed paths with Chris on Church St. or at a friends house party or around the world. I believe the world morns for Chris because we are all one. We are all connected somehow and Chris's death hurts us all. People that hate. People that attack and people that kill should never be on our streets. The sad reality is that the world has always had this hate in it and on our streets - The same streets I walk with love. We need to stay strong and not be afraid of these monsters who share life with us or they win! These monsters share a gift of life that I wish was never shared to the person(s) that killed Chris. I will never forget attending his Vigil. Pray for his family and friends. Pray they find these men who don't deserve to be on our Canadian streets. On our streets, in Toronto, we walk free.

The (GLBT) Village Still Needed
As a longtime human rights activist of the GLBT community in Toronto I can share that terrible violence against gay, lesbian, bi & transgendered persons is tragically NOT uncommon in large cities and small towns across this land."Out of the closets & into the streets" people! In the gay 90's we chnged the laws for equal rights for lgbt folk.We need to speak the truth in love,AGAIN,that HEARTS may also be transformed.Evil flourishes when good souls do nothing. This is a call for good-minded people to speak out.Under Julian Fantino we saw the T.O. Police start initiatives to counter hatred incidents against gay folk. The Toronto Police are better than most in trying to protect our people.I have faith that they WILL find the perps & bring them to justice;but we MUST watch out for each other/help & protect each other.Much can be done when good people muster their courage & stand together.Good people, let none of us, any of us do to another, what has been done to us.The power of Love is stronger than hate.Just one ray of light causes the darkness to dissipate. We still need The Village-a place of safety for glbt folk to feel safe and free. The truth is that we now need to make sure that there is at least one GLBT VILLAGE/Street in every town & city in N America where our people can gather & remember where we've come from(Stonewall), how far we've come, and how far we still need to go in making this land a place where ALL people are welcome, respected, honored & dignified. Please Speak Out against ALL of the DAILY, SUBTLE homophobia, sexism, racism,&violence & the blatant acts of hatred will diminish. Take care of the "pennies" & the "loonies" will take care of themselves.Dominant Media: We Need You To Cover This Now,Because It IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.Stand in good conscience with us now.Gay & Straight folk: Unite in respect &

Justice Beckons All of Us
LISTEN HERE!!!! The important issue at hand right now is not to focus on what the news/police are doing to cover up the fact that this may have been a gay bash, but to focus on catching these losers. We need to catch them first! Than and only than on their court date, when these 3 or 4 murderers are on trial - we as a community should rush to the courts, sit on the front lawn and demand the most severe punishment the law can give them for this evil act.

Why there was no ASL interpretation at the Vigil!
I’m saddened by this horrible tragedy that Chris was murdered by these guys because I never understand why they do it to him, and they must have to be brought to justice. My sympathies go out to Chris’ family and friends. I feel sad and angry to learn that the Vigil organizers didn’t even bother to find American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation in the first place so that Deaf who are also in the part of our LGBTTIQQ2S communities wanted to attend there by showing our supports and respects to Chris’ family and friends so that Deaf people can feel being part of this important vigil with the solidarity of the LGBTTIQQ2S communities through no communication barrier. LGBTTIQQ2S communities that include Deaf people, we come together to show our solidarity for fighting against homophobia and hate crime that happened in Toronto. Without ASL interpretation at the Vigil, how can we as Deaf people join with them to show our solidarity in this LGBTTIQQ2S communities if we do not understand what were these speakers talked about it? Again, I wanted to express my sympathies to Chris’ family and friends and I would like to ask to all LGBTTIQQ2S leaders that in the future vigils if someone is murdered by hate crime or any crime that relates against our LGBTTIQQ2S; please provide ASL interpretation so that we, Deaf people, can attend to show our respects, sympathies and support! Thank you!
