Ford skips Pride Week proclamation and Nunziata gets heckled
PRIDE NEWS / 'Where's the mayor?' 'Rob Ford's a homophobe!'

Angry shouts and hostile jeers met Councillor Frances Nunziata, who was sent to read the Pride Week proclamation on behalf of Mayor Rob Ford, on June 27 at city hall.

The crowd continued booing when it became clear that Ford was once again a no-show. “Where’s the mayor?” “This is bullshit!” “We have a homophobe for a mayor!”

“He is supposed to be the mayor for the whole city. Queers are taxpayers, too!”

Looking increasingly annoyed by the heckling, Nunziata stopped reading the proclamation and snapped, “I think there are people here that would like for me to be here and read the proclamation. If you don’t agree, you have the right to leave.” Thunderous boos and cries of “Shame” erupted from the crowd.

“Where is Ford? We’re still waiting,” someone shouted from the back. Ward 27 Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam smiled at the crowd, trying to quell the anger. “I’m waiting too, my friends. It’s sometimes hard to bring people on side. Remember how difficult it was coming out to your parents. We have to keep trying.”

In her speech, Angie Umbac, the 2011 Pride Toronto international grand marshal, noted that free speech is a precious right that’s still denied to gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people beyond Canada’s borders. “It’s a wonderful freedom to come and publicly voice anger against the mayor.”

More than 400 attended the ceremony. No one could confirm if the mayor was inside city hall at the time.

“It is appalling that Ford didn’t show up today,” said local DJ Craig Dominic. “Everyone in this city should be offended. This is not how the mayor of Toronto should behave. People need to pay attention to this.”

Local activist Enza Anderson blames Ford’s public relations staff for failing to put the pressure on or stress the importance of the event. “He was touring the Air Canada Centre with [Toronto Maple Leafs general manager] Brian Burke, who asked Ford to join him marching with PFLAG. How do you turn down a group of mothers?”

The councillors who attended the ceremony included Wong-Tam, Mike Layton, Jaye Robinson, Pam McConnell, Paula Fletcher, Cesar Palacio, Karen Stintz, Michael Thompson, Adam Vaughan, Mary Fragedakis, Glenn De Baeremaeker, Gord Perks, Janet Davis, Sarah Doucette, Josh Colle, Josh Matlow, Frances Nunziata and Shelley Carroll.

Ford was also a no-show at the Proud of Toronto event at city hall in May and the proclamation for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia at city hall with PFLAG Toronto.

Gay, lesbian and trans. What about bi?
"free speech is a precious right that’s still denied to gay, lesbian and trans people beyond Canada’s borders". Andrea, unless LGBT is a directly-quoted acronym, why is "bi" or "bisexual" almost never mentioned in your articles? I have lost count of the number of times that bisexual people have been made invisible in articles on xtra.ca, the large majority of times written by you. I exist. Countless people I know exist. Apparently, it seems, the bisexual doesn't exist in what you write. There are a lot of people who read you, who identify as bi, who would like the opportunity to see themselves in what you write. I hope in the future I can see 'bi' or 'bisexual' more often in your articles. I don't believe I am alone.

Thank you for inclusion
It's much appreciated to see the inclusion of bisexuals into the article, just minutes after my first comment. If "gay, lesbian and trans" are commonly mentioned here, I once again hope to see more inclusionary language through the addition of "bi" or "bisexual". Once again, thank you.

Scheduling conflicts
We shouldn’t blame Rob Ford for scheduling conflicts. It happens to the best of us - even LGBT activists! For example, several AIDS organizations co-sponsored a QuAIA event on Thursday, June 23, 2011 that was scheduled at the same time as the annual AIDS vigil at Cawthra Park in Toronto. The AIDS organizations that sponsored the conflicting QuAIA event were AIDS ACTION NOW, Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange and the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation. I hate Pride
This is the reason I no longer attend Pride - I am not "proud" to be associated with a bunch of hysterical queeny boors screaming insults at someone reaching out. Bunch of lunatics - I can really understand sometimes why so many people hate queers.

Could Nunziata be more clueless?
You do NOT tell queers to be quiet or leave.

The Rainbow flag has lost its meaning
Its a pity Pride Toronto only thinks of its self centre interests. If the Flag raising on the Monday June 27th, truly represents all LGBT queers in Toronto. Then representatives from the three other queer festivals in the City of Toronto; Trigger Festival, Mad Pride and Queer West Fest should be on guest list. If not, then this redundent symbol should be dump. There are 20 queer art festivals in the world, that hold no rainbow flag raising. No one from these 3 other Toronto queer festivals has ever been invited. Dump the Flag it's lost stature. Surely Pride Toronto could come up with some other symbol or event that is more representive of all LGBT queers in Toronto.

BD. Direcotrs, of PRIDE Toronto say SORRY...
According to Frances Nunziata, on the John Oaekly Show (June 28)she has received several phone calls from DIRECTORS of PRIDE Toronto APOLOGIZING for the behavior of the gays who heckled her.--------If this is true then these self-hating homophobic pricks have to brought to light and fired and named immediately!.....I do not want anyone apologizing for me especially to the likes of Frances Nutjob.

Pathetic!
Adults behaving like school children. Honestly, the man is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't when it comes to the gay community. Now let's say he did attend Pride - would you welcome him with open arms or would you all be acting like the two rude, arrogant idiots at the flag raising ceremony??

Rob / Robina
This just in!:- Rob Ford plans to announce shortly that he is really a woman trapped in the body of a man and will be marching in the Pride parade in drag! Although this might surprise some people Rob Ford actually matches the usual profile of a man-trapped-woman. He is big and coarse and insensitive al la Don Cherry and swears a lot when nobody is listening and is a real heterosexual married jock. He has zero fashion sense in women's clothing and likes to talk and act like a guy without any history of feminine behaviour. Anything higher than half-inch block heels gives him vertigo and makes him walk like a bow-legged cowboy who had ricketts as a child. He likes to pee standing up even when wearing lipstick and pantyhose. (Hell, this guy even poos standing up and will aim it very accurately at your face if you are not careful just like a skunk!) He is also very homophobic and will steadfastly insist that he is absolutely not at all gay and will never ever volunteer for anything gay-related and absolutely will not sit in a room with any gay guys in it. Rob is basically a silly old fart from Mimico and as Robina will continue to be a silly old fartess from Mimico. Rob / Robina plans to march in the Pride parade while holding a sign which says "I am not gay!".
