Fetish Fair drops the fetish and courts 'all ages'
TORONTO NEWS / Toronto Leather Pride event moves to Zipperz

The Church Street Fetish Fair is now the Church Street Village Fair. Organizers hope the change signals to people that the event is more “inclusive and geared to all ages,” says the co-chair of the Church and Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (CWVBIA).

Avery Pitcher says the reason for the change is simply that the businesses along Church St were not reporting much profit. “That is what the BIA mission is, to make the businesses more busy and to bring customers in.”

The BIA has been working with local businesses and festival organizers to redesign the fair, she says. The fair takes place Aug 14.

“We want the fair to be all-inclusive, all ages and all walks of life,” she says. “It will be a carnival with a Ferris wheel and big blow-up games. There will also be a bull ride and a climbing wall. Most of the games are geared to adults.”

Pitcher says the new name for the festival is the Church Street Village Fair: Leather to Lace. “It’s not going to focus on fetish, but the fetish will still be involved,” she says. “Will the leather community feel they have been reduced? Probably.”

Toronto Leather Pride (TLP) president Jack Pearce says he considers the Church Street Village Fair and TLP to be “two totally different events.”

On the decision to include “leather and lace” in the event’s new title, Pearce says wryly, “No comment. Lace is never worn with leather.”

The first Toronto Leather Pride weekend takes place Aug 11–14. “The leather community will have their main event at Zipperz,” Pitcher points out. “This is not about getting rid of the leather. This is about bringing people in.”

On the day of the Church Street Village Fair, Pitcher promises there will be plenty of leather and fetish street vendors. “All the same vendors were invited back.”

Originally the BIA requested that the city extend Church St to Carlton St for the day, but the city turned down the request, says Pearce, who sent Xtra a copy of an email showing the request’s denial. As a result, the fair will end on the north side of Alexander St, he says.

In the letter, Pitcher states, “In fact, the city will only allow us to close to the north side of Alexander St, which in itself presents certain space restrictions. With Zipperz being outside of the BIA zone and outside the barricaded area, we will need to connect to see what kind of signage is needed to make sure the leather event is being promoted to the fair-goers.”

The CWVBIA does not include Zipperz, Pearce says.

“The city refused to extend the street because Zipperz was not included in the BIA area, but oddly enough they extend the street for Pride,” Pearce points out. “That is very curious. Curious, curious.”

When Xtra called the city clerk's office, administration clerk Lynn Armstrong could not find any record of the street extension request or the city's refusal.

Pearce doesn’t think being at Zipperz will affect TLP participant numbers. “Leather people and kink people, we find each other.”

Toronto Leather Pride kicks off at the Phoenix Concert Hall Aug 13 for the Leather, Bootblack and Rubber contests, followed by the Leather Ball 17 later that night. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Xtra drops the village
Doesn't Xtra's recent move out of the village put it out of the CWVBIA boundary? Businesses willing to stick it and remain in the village should have a say over the events that take place on their street.

Leather and Lace
Jack's quote that “Lace is never worn with leather.” is maddening! I know that Leathermen consider Leatherwomen to be second class citizens in their community, but to make us fully invisible? Aaaargh!! And what about the drag queens and femme gay men who enjoy a little genderfuck with their leather? Jack - you're missing out on a big segment of your community. About the rest of the article and the concept: Toronto has enough all-ages street festivals. I love the sex-positivity that this one has showcased in the past and I am sad to predict that that will wane with the new mandate. It makes me much less interested int attending.

hetero queer kink future for gays
Make the entire event adult hetero queer and move it away from Church St and its association with old gay. Leather and Fetish in Toronto is so not gay any more. Pan poly rules the dungeon and anyone who excludes should stay away. If you discriminate between whipping a woman over a man, then you have problems better worked on outside the Kink World. The Fetish Scene is now fully Bi, Trans, Pan and hetero. Old gay is dead. Good riddance and bring on the ladies in leatherlace.

F'N kidding me? Well I didn't attend or buy anything last year because of the proceeds going to HALCO, (which supports the criminalization of HIV) and this year? HA! I never go to anyplace that is anti-gay, or anti-sex. I'm not THAT fag. THAT fag is someone else. Could someone tell me if PRIAPE and NORTHBOUND LEATHER support this travesty? If so I'm buying somewhere else.

Hurray for GAY !! WTF is Hetero Queer ??
@YO Snatch -WTF is “Hetero Queer”? AND “Old Gay is Dead” !!?? Is that not exclusionary? You're feeling very proud of your ignorance and you insult the people who fought with their lives to bring you the freedom that you now enjoy, to be the mouthy little bitch that you are. What makes you different from the “God Hates Fags” crowd? You can fu*k who ever you want and let everyone else do the same. Try to take your head out of your snatch for a second and look around. With more and more women in burqas/niqabs on Toronto streets and every government becoming conservative, you should focus your mouth on freeing our country from the fascism that is descending upon us, instead of badmouthing Gays.

@ YAY-I'm-GAY - Way to over-react!
I happen to agree with Snatch. Spaces that are considered "gay" are some of the most exclusionary i've ever been in. While i hate to generalize, i find there is a lot of trans and heterophobia in the gay community. Some gay men and women can be really discriminatory. Kink events are not exclusively queer and are constantly changing and opening new avenues of sexual exploration. Snatch was simply stating that its foolish to host it as a queer only event. It sounds like you didn't even try to figure out what they were saying. How can someone who supports pansexuality be even remotely anti-gay?

sniff the truth, bigot
kingmob, the comment by whip the snatch was SATIRE! It was designed to elicit comments like yours which PROVE the reaction by Yay I'm Gay is LEGIT. Gay is being crushed by pansexual, trans heteroqueer in the kink scene entirely because pansexual trans queer hetero discriminates against (a large group of) gay men by refusing to acknowledge the legitimate sexual fetish of exclusive cis male on cis male sex scenes. By bringing the human rights code and the Church of Inclusivity into the dungeon, you mock and spit on gay male sex by demanding a forced equity sex, and end up with the children's play day proposed for church st. Check YOUR privilege and attitudes, Mary. Like many queers, your queerness includes hating gay men.

The heterophobia expressed in this event must be called out so that all queers may be free to lash any of the 16 genders.

There are thousands of “Genders” but only 2 sexes
There are thousands of genders, as “Gender” is learned social mannerisms or behaviour pertaining to expressions of physical sex, based on cultural beliefs, mating behaviour, hormone levels and a host of other things. There are basically 2 sexes: based on xx, or xy chromosomes found in every single cell of an organism's body. There may chromosomal abnormalities which result in 4 - 6 variants: xx, xxx, x, xxy, xy, xyy. The xxx tends to be mentally and physically challenged, while the xyy tends towards violent behaviours and many of them are in jail. Some species can change sex. But human “sex change” surgery is the same as a nosejob, or superficial cosmetic surgery as the person does not grow, nor is implanted with reproductive structures of the other sex. Bring some cock to the Dyke March
Someone says "I happen to agree with Snatch...spaces that are considered "gay" are some of the most exclusionary I've ever been in." I concur. Ditto: Dyke. Straight women politicians can attend, but Glenn Murray can't. Is that sensible? I can't bring my penis-encumbered friends in the dyke march with me, because they are excluded. No fag has ever hit me, but a woman has - twice. So, don't lecture me about safe spaces and exclusionary politics, chicky-birds. Your bullshit is ripe, and the roses are hungry for it. Ditch the male hate-fest, dykes, the 70s are over.

Jack, get a life, man. You live in toronto and the leather community is not just all cookie-cutter butch shaved head gay men with the same ideal on boring fetishsex. Us genderqueer folk who love to mix leather and lace turn our noses up at you for even saying such a thing by simply dismissing it. How about this: a kink festival where masculinity is banished? How about the leather gay men fuck-off and go back to IML where they probably feel more secure.. oh wait, IML also has us folk there as well... Fuck you, Jack, you don't know jack-squat.

shallis, your fetish power is like the stink of a shitrose. Your genderqueer radicality deposes male on male hegemony as the phoney trans hating exclusivity train that has plowed down genderfolk since Stonewall. Homosexuality is a patriarchal hatred of the feminine genderqueer world of shallis and people like shashafresh and loogie. You can't force others to have your type of sex
@Schitzville, your anger is just annoying noise. It has no real power. It only has the power to gnaw at your own innards and soul. In general, anger will motivate aggressive people to attack you and you will be even more hurt than you already are. (especially in Alberta) You can't force anyone to associate with, or have sex with, anyone they are afraid of, or instinctually wish to avoid. Take deep breaths. Live your life based on your needs, not based on spite. Revenge will only derail you, disorient your life directions and cause you diseases. Or, help others as a way of healing yourself.

healing
Frank, look in the mirror. Now duck before it shatters. Judging by your rage, “self-healing” has obviously not worked for you. There is no shame in asking for help. If you tried not to be too mean, I'm sure people would be more helpful to you. Your family doctor can also help if you ask. One doesn't have to be physically or mentally “sick” to be “healed.” For example, kindness can help to heal sadness due to loss, or feelings of shame and inadequacy. Kindness usually gets kindness in return. It becomes a cycle which benefits everyone. And it's free...

I agree, there is no
shame in asking for help. And more people do it. The problem is that when they do they are "helped" by sicko's, and if one is paying attention and looks around a bit, then one realizes that the sick can't help the sick no matter how kind and well intentioned. God bless you.

A sign of the times
It's not surprising that the Church and Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area decided to reinvent the Church Street Fetish Fair as the Church Street Village Fair. The city is becoming more socially conservative. With more and more immigrants from fundamentalist and socially conservative countries coming to Toronto, it will be much harder for fetish events to be held in city streets and parks. The future of Toronto streets is more veiled and face-covered women and less sexually provocative events. The leather and fetish communities will find that they are going to have to back in the closet and hold their events behind closed doors. The old Toronto must make way for the new.

Fetish Fair Protest
There are women in Niqabs walking on Church street to pick up their children at the school on Alexander St. There are amore and more women in Niqabs all over downtown Toronto. As they move in, will we be moved out, or restricted in our Gay/LGBT Village for our Un-Islamic behaviour --like in London and Amsterdam? The BIA wants a Fetish Fair for everyone and all ages. Will the Muslims wearing Niqabs (Masks) and their children and anti-Gay ideologies be there as well? Let's have a Fetish Fair protest with our own style of Fetishes to revitalize our Village and show those who don't like our ways that they don't have to come here. The stores may want to tone down having been threatened by the city, but individual citizens do not have to. Let us Gay/LGBT people, be who we are, at all times in our own home Village. Running around the street in weird or provocative costumes is and has always been our LGBT birthright and it is free. Canada is supposed to be a land of freedom. Let your inner child come out at the Fetish Fair. Just be who you are! (If you wear socks you're not nude :) Here is what will come if we give in and start being “proper.” ______ http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/8570506/Police-covered-up-violent-campaign-to-turn-London-area-Islamic.html

Stopping the gay ghetto from expanding
It looks like the gay ghetto on Church Street may officially be prohibited from expanding further south. The article states that the Church and Wellesley Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) originally requested that the City extend the Church Street fair to Carlton Street for the day, but the City turned down the request (since Carlton Street is outside the BIA). As a result, the fair will end on the north side of Alexander Street. I wonder if the City's refusal has anything to do with the plans of Toronto's francophone community to officially designate Carlton Street (from Yonge Street to Sherbourne Street) as a French Quarter. See http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/08/06/a-french-quarter-for-toronto-mais-oui/

Why not celebrate the niqab as a fetish?
Why not invite queered and sexually-othererd fetish communities members and fully veiled (burka and niqab veil)Muslim women's communities members to get together at a public Festival to work on common ground for mutual cultural and sexual respect. QUIA could moderate. All participants would wear full face covers, either niqab (veil) or leather-rubber head mask. The Festival will be moved from Church St. so not to offend Muslims who may have issues with the Christian hegemony of the name of the street.

All-Ages-All-Cultures-Fetish-Fair at IslamicCentre
@Cloaca SickFuck, You should find the biggest fattest hairiest leather men and TRANSwomen. Dress them only in leather/lace jockstraps, and incredible huge piercing and tattoos and of course, black leather Niqab face-veils. Get them to march around yelling “Fist-Me-Hard, Tra-la” at the “All-Ages-All Cultures-Fetish-Fair” at OverleaBlvd/Thorncliffe Park, in front of the Islamic Centre. I'm sure all the Niqabi women would come running outside “ululating,” to negotiate with you on mutual respect --in a non-Hegemonic way. But their negotiation techniques may not please you... To them you are just Homosexual Infidels who deserve to die a painful death. It is written in their Koran and Hadith. They don't accept any other fetish except their own weird costumes and sex within marriage and in private --the weirdest fetish of all. Of course, you can have all the inclusionary fantasies you want, it's free entertainment. But don't even try to enter a Muslim country with a leather dildo in your suitcase, unless your ideal fetish is getting raped and tortured to death, by sweaty bearded soldiers, in a windowless prison cell, with a reeking rotting open sewer in the middle of the space where your blood and guts could flow to join all the others they have tortured. Rats would be running around, chewing at your ear and nasal cartilages in the middle of the long dark night, while bed-bugs and spiders bite your cloaca... That's what you might get in spite of trying to be so “nice.”
