In what is surely an effort to make Toronto's Pride festival as fabulous as possible Canada's federal government has announced a plan to dish over $400,000 to Pride Toronto.

TOURIST ATTRACTION. The Toronto Pride Parade is estimated to have attracted one-million revellers.
(Peter Bevan)
Diane Abonczy — minister of state for small business and tourism, and a former member of the now-defunct Canadian Alliance party — made the announcement Jun 10. "The Government of Canada is proud to show its commitment to the tourism industry, particularly during this difficult economic period," states Ablonczy in a press release that manages to avoid the use of any words like "gay" or "lesbian" that might hint at Pride's homo theme.

The hundreds of thousands of flamboyant revellers that cram into Toronto's downtown core for Pride are to thank for the big-bucks boost — the funding was granted through Canada's Marquee Tourism Events Program, a $100-million fund created to support large-scale events that attract international tourists and media attention.

In the press release Tracey Sandilands, executive director of Pride Toronto, states she's "thrilled" with the feds' contribution.

"The initiatives supported by the program will enhance the festival in many ways, including improvements to the visitor experience and services for people with disabilities," states Sandilands. "Investments like these are key to the festival's success and support our efforts in growing the festival each year, especially as we prepare for our 30th anniversary next year."

In addition to improving infrastructure and services for people with disabilities, money will go toward improving festival programming, marketing and Pride Toronto's website.

This year's Toronto Pride festival, with the theme "Can't Stop, Won't Stop," takes place Thu, Jun 18 to 28. For more info check out Xtra's Ultimate Pride Guide, included in the Jun 18 issue of Xtra, or go to Pridetoronto.com.

Moral Bankruptcy
These Pride parades and festivities are disgusting public displays of the most bizarre of human activities. Otherwise criminal offences of public nudity are encouraged by all levels of government. In particular, the federal government's $400,000 funding of the Toronto Pride festivities, is evidence of the corrupt, moral bankruptcy of the government ministers responsible for this waste of taxpayers money. Tourism in Canada should not include more of the same 'sick' homosexuals who brought us HIV and AIDS, other STD's, and general sexual deviation of society. Canada does not need nor want any of these sexual deviants bringing their 'sickness' across our borders to be entertained on our tax dollars.

@John Wood:
not to give undue attention to folks like yourself John Wood, but I believe that most Canadians would find posts like yours to be "disgusting public displays of the most bizarre of human activities." Please try to work through your irrational hate and fear. For your sake, more than ours.

At best 34,000 not 1 million
The parade is 1.3 miles long, 6864 ft. A person every 2 ft, 3,432 single file. If you had 5 deep both sides of the street then you had 34,320 people. For one million the parade would have to be 29 miles long. Great parade, but come on how about some truth, could it have to do with the $400,000 in funding. Also being reported is $80 million injected into the economy, can someone tell me where this number comes from.

Obviously you've never been to Pride
If you think the crowds are only "5 deep". At some points in the parade it's about 20 deep. Try showing up next time to see what you're critiquing.

Strange
I can't quite understand why people cannot get past the gay aspect of the parade and just look at it for what it is. Grown adults walking the streets nude and simply advertising a sexually permiscuous lifestyle. Whether their gay or straight, this sort of behaviourn is odd. I liken it to old Roman festivities, this sort of thing is not progressive, but regressive. One is not moving moral values forward, but 2,000 years backwards. The photos speak for themselves, if you don't find walking the streets completely nude to be strange, then as an intelligent, rational adult, I find you to be quite odd. Complete waste of tax payers money - freaking my money.

just an ordinary everyday parade?
David - of course marching nude down the street is odd and strange, every parade is full of odd and strange things, one parade even has magic fairies and flying reindeer, both rather odd and strange. While I rarely get to see the men marching nude I really want to see, and sometimes some naked men would look better if they were clothed, I can't see the problem with a group of gay nudists marching along with everyone else. Just because they're nudists doesn't mean they're sexually promiscuous either, they may be, the might not be, nudist groups aren't about saving time between men, actually I'm not exactly sure what it's about to be honest but I know its not a sexual thing. Besides there's nothing more natural, everyday, and familiar than our naked bodies, there's nothing strange or odd about that anyways. I think nudists are good to help us question our relationship to, plus our comfort and knowledge of our own bodies. I don't know if gay nudists marching down Yonge St is progressive or regressive but it certainly is harmless and may very well be performing a valuable public service by helping us to think about our own bodies and our own image of them in a more honest way. Thanks!

Female Nudity?
Would people be as tolerant of the nudity if it was female nudity? Let's try it out for one year. Have completely nude girls (not just topless) participate in the parade. Will the tolerant Canadians still be tolerant? I doubt it. We'll never know until we try. Any nudist/stripper females out there have the courage? How about you Shannon Blatt? You're a liberal girl aren't you?

Pride has been hijacked...
This kind of 'shock value' public nudity displayed at pride is unacceptable. The outrageous partying and drug use is unacceptable. The dangerous sexual behavior (including anal sex) linked to said drug use and spreading HIV is also unacceptable. When did pride stop being about GLBT rights and social issues? When did it turn into a perverted freak show? Probably when we started using the term, 'queer'. Now every nudist, fetishist, and unfortunately vile polyamorous perverts can call themselves part of the GLBTQ community. We in Canada have rights now, which means we have to support and be obedient to those institutions which grant us those rights. We have to contribute, in a positive way to society. This self-entitled non-conformist BS just undermines proper family values and the social fabric which we need to maintain our rights. Rights that we fought hard for, rights that we should not be sharing with nudists and fetishists and disgusting Poly people. Why? Because Those are choices people make. The last one being dangerous and illegal. Directly or indirectly supporting choices (especially bad choices like promiscuous sex, drug use and polyamory) is not what Pride should be about. The immutable quality of being GLBT and the fact that that doesn't make us less human is what pride should be about. But I guess that corporatized drug fueled, socially and personally destructive behavior is more fun, right?

Gawd, I get sick of comments like yours
Gawd, I get sick of comments like yours, "Gay man, E town Alberta"... enough with the pearl-clutching and finger-wagging. The street you're strutting down, the rights you're enjoying, the house you're living in were all BUILT by these "perverted freaks" that you so readily sneer at, you insufferable, sanctimonious little knob. Show some fucking gratitude, you creep.

Response to Shannon
How is wanting to see nude women misogynistic or homophobic? I figured if you talk the talk, you'll walk the walk:) Honest Question: Would YOU be okay if there were completely nude females in the parade? No matter if they are attractive/unattractive, young/old, large/petite...
