Family Coalition Party targets Cheri DiNovo
ONTARIO POLITICS / Flyers accuse trans people of being sexual predators

Family Coalition Party of Ontario canvassers have distributed flyers to people in west-end Toronto's Parkdale-High Park riding that many are calling transphobic.

The flyers target the riding’s NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo.

DiNovo was the sponsor of Bill 33, which added gender identity and gender expression to the Ontario Human Rights Code and was passed by the legislature in June.

The flyers refer to Bill 33 as “The Bathroom Bill” and say that it allows “a man who calls himself transgendered” to use a woman’s public washroom. They also allege that the bill will “threaten the lives of girls and women by putting them at greater risk from male sexual predators.”

The flyer that was distributed in DiNovo's Parkdale-High Park riding.
The flyers don’t refer to the needs or challenges of trans people but present the bill as legislative permission for men to invade women’s washrooms and showers. They include a petition demanding a repeal of the bill.

The Family Coalition Party is a minor Ontario political party focused largely on banning abortion and other Christian religious issues. It received fewer than 10,000 votes in total in the last Ontario general election – less than 0.25 percent of the popular vote.

Susan Gapka, chair of the Trans Lobby Group, says the flyers dehumanize trans people.

“This is another example of why extending human and social rights to trans people is vitally important. This type of attack upon us as a vulnerable population is nothing more than storytelling, myth making and fear mongering,” Gapka said in a press release.

DiNovo says it’s “disturbing” that she’s being attacked for standing up for trans people.

“The transphobic message of the flyer is that trans folk are, in essence, pedophiles,” she says. “The whole structure of their argument is ludicrous unless you understand that basic message: there’s no such thing as a trans person; there’s just male pedophiles dressed as women.”

But a spokesperson for the FCPO says the flyer addresses legitimate concerns about the implementation of Bill 33.
“Our concern is that there are people in the province who are intent on doing harm in the public and use the bill to do harm. We want to make sure that as this bill is implemented that appropriate precautions are taken so public safety is protected,” says Eric Ames, communication director of the FCPO.

“I think the flyers are being misportrayed as saying that the trans community are predators. We’re not saying that at all.
We’re saying that there are predators who would use Bill 33 for harm,” he says. “When it comes to discrimination for any reason, the Family Coalition Party does not support discrimination for anyone, and that includes the trans community.”

But DiNovo doesn’t believe that explanation.

“People who get these understand that message. It’s an effective hate message. Nobody is phoning us and asking about allowing male predators into girls' change rooms,” DiNovo says.

Ames says the party targeted DiNovo’s riding because it wants to get her attention and force her to respond to its concerns in a meeting that also includes members of the trans community.

“If they have already thought out all the implications, then why haven’t they met with us?” he asks.

DiNovo had initially considered filing a human-rights grievance against the FCPO over the flyers but decided against it, citing the cost in time and resources.

Family Coalition Party is begging some attention
Otherwise who would take a "party" that at best attracts 10,000 votes serious? Take on one of the most marginalized group of people, i.e. the trans community, to attract some desperately needed attention, and this is a Christian value and way of doing things, isn't it? With the growing number of trans role models - Laverne Cox, Isis King, Janet Mock, Julia Serano, etc - it is becoming more difficult to picture and present trans women as 'sexual predators', unless those who do so still live in the dark ages and are far away from what's going on in the world out there, which clearly applies to this 'Christian' group and their friends down in the US bible belt.

Read the REAL story.
If you bother to actually read the party's stance on the issue, you'd see they're not calling ANY trans people sexual predators. What they're saying is that there are people who will exploit this new law to prey on innocent women and girls, which there are. All a man would have to do (if he were caught) is claim to be trans, and then he can't be prosecuted for being in that room. The party directly says they have no issue with the trans community, just the wording of this bill. This article is horribly biased against the group.

Christians?
...focused largely on banning abortion and other Christian religious issues... Are they not aware that Cheri is an ordained minister and is the finest example of a Christian I have ever met. And to target her community for the good work she does on behalf of others without a voice - not that is Christian values! So take your 10,000 and move to Alberta where Stephen Harper and his ilk will love you.

@Clay
There are many places where these protections have been on the books for decades- why aren't we hearing about these stories more often if the potty panic crowd really has a point? By your logic, cissexual female predators currently have the right to commit assault in these spaces because as women, they have the right to be there. Please read the text of the bill before spreading such harmful misinformation.

@Clay
These protections have existed in Ontario for over a decade without any problems. The only thing this bill did was made it explicit/visible in the law, rather than just being from legal precedent. Also the bill does not make peeking at people or assaulting people legal. So if a cis man was doing something illicit or harming women in any way inside a bathroom, claiming to be trans would not be a defense for illegal activity.

@Clay:I challenge you or your Christian group to..
@Clay Have YOU read the message sent through the fliers? It says "men who dress like women"; trans people are NOT men who dress like women, and the message that the flier is sending out is merely perpetuation of a cliche false impression of trans people who has been a basis of discrimination against them for a while. I challenge you or your Christian group to provide statistics on the number of incidents "men who dress like women" have caused in girls washrooms. Regarding "appropriate precautions ... so public safety is protected" nice try Ames, no law allows anyone to harm others and you know that very well, you are just begging attention by creating a scene and DiNovo has done the right thing to ignore you.

Ironic
The real irony of this is that no one would have known about the bill had the Family Coalition Party not sent out this brochure. So now the real sexual predators know about the bill and will most likely use it to their advantage legally to enter the washroom in the guise of a woman. Also does the FCP realize that there are stalls that lock in women's bathrooms, we are not exposed at a urinal like men. Also predators don't need a law to attack women, they do it anyway because they don't care about the law and probably wouldn't attack a woman in bathroom anyway, too public. And last but not least they have drawn attention to Transgender rights and the discrimination and bigotry that they face.

Everyone deserves to be safe!!
It is clear from the FCP's pamphlet that they are concerned about sexual offenders dressing up as females and assaulting unsuspecting victims and not "transgendered" people. Notice the wording refers to "a MAN who calls himself a woman" and not "an alleged transgendered man". I think that the FCP have a very legitimate concern here. And is not this article biased against those who do not share its views? The Bill does have the potential of allowing permission for “MEN (and not the transgendered) to invade women’s washrooms and showers." Perhaps the LGB T community should work hand in hand with the FCP and NDP to address this and address the concerns of trans-gender persons? There is nothing “disturbing” about the pamphlet as DiNovo claims, she is not being attacked for standing up for trans people but she is looking for public sympathy while belittling others legitimate concerns. In fact we could and probably call this article "religiophobic" or specifically "Christophobic" for signaling out that the FCP does address peoples religious views and painting that in a negative light because the FCP are NOT voicing the religious views of “some” of its supporters but but "public safety". We have to ask ourselves, do we even need a "law" for this? After all a transgendered male is NO LONGER A MALE so they would "HAVE" to use the "female bathroom anyway" otherwise they are NOT REALLY TRANSGENDERED but cross dressers! Yes the Bill should be repealed and rewritten to ensure public safety. Xtra s/b ashamed of this article - convoluting the words and intent of this small party for all the wrong reasons. This whole article is absurd and ridiculous. If I was gay ir trandgendered or Lesbian or Bi I'd be ashamed to have Xtra or DiNovo represent me. You are just another voice for a wealthy Lobby group and DiNovo just pandering for a vote from the GLBT community. The FCP are showing more m

@Clay, @Havingalook
Clay, there's no sense in trying to reason with these people. Just look at the perverted ads that they have on this site! Havingalook, Cheri DiNovo isn't a Christian - she's a member of the United Church. The UCC has gone complete off the rails, most of their "beliefs" are not biblical. If you don't believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, and reject Christ's teachings about sin and damnation, then you're not a Christian - no matter what you call yourself. People like Cheri are posers. They take on the guise of something they fundamentally disagree with, infiltrate, deconstruct and destroy. The UCC is pretty much done - one has to admit that the homosexuals have won that battle. So which denomination will it be next?
