It was a night of orderly chaos on Friday, when Crews and Tangos reopened to the public.

For the official opening party, the two storey Victorian was a packed house with homos and hags rejoicing in the resurrection of the Church St centerpiece.

Favourites like Daytona Bitch and Amanda Roberts anchored the main stage with energetic performances, while partygoers packed the multiple dancefloors, bars and patios.

Equally packed, however, were the sidewalks out front, where guests waited in droves to check out the new digs. But in true Crews fashion, the evening proved that good things come to those who wait.

One partygoer, Johnny, says Crews’ reopening was a blessing for both himself and his social life. When the bar closed almost a year ago, he says he “stopped going out completely.”

Another guest, Justin, “expected more change” but was likewise pleased to be back. Like many others, he praised Crews’ diverse crowd and eclectic variety.

“I love that you have the option of the drag bar and then dancing upstairs,” he beamed, admitting he too went out less after it closed.

Co-owner Paras Prashad says he was “flabbergasted” by the response, which was warmer than he had anticipated.

“I knew Crews was popular but this was phenomenal,” he marveled, “People loved it! We got great reviews!”

One less-than-great review came from guest Michael Finley. Like many, he was disenchanted by the seemingly endless lineups, a problem that has long plagued the popular Crews and Tangos.

“We were in line ups all night,” he said. “I stood in line for the toilet. I stood in line to get a drink. I stood in line to get in this cardboard box with no roof,” referring to the smoking patio.

Others shared his sentiments, but as everyone, including owner Prashad, knows, you can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs.

“You can never make everyone happy,” Prashad said, “but we try our best to address everyone’s concerns.”

And despite souring delays at the door, few were actually deterred from entering. Not even Mike Finley, who was admittedly charmed by the new motif.

“I do like that the smoking area now has tables,” he said.

The night before, Crews and Tangos held an invite-only party Thursday night, giving Church St business owners and VIPs a sneak peek at the revamped space.

name of dance club at Gould in collapsed building?
Nice to see this Church Street bar re-open, and to see that the economy-at least the gay bar component of it-- is still alive and well. Does anyone remember the name of the after hours gay dance club that used to be at the site of the Gould street building collapse (second floor) about 20 or so years ago? It was a fun place that lasted about a year or so in the late early 80's

Reopening of Crews and Tango
The Atmospher electric, The place clean and refreshened, all were having a good time. BUT the bar service was woefully slow to the point of people leaving. I so wish Crews and Tango succes, we need this space back and to succeed BUT please ensure the hustlers and druggies, that were evident on the opening night, are encouraged to go elsewhere or you will soon close or loose your good paying patrons. Wishing you the greatest of success and thanks for opening this iconic space again.

OH! Dear. Day Two of Cews and Tangos
OH! Dear, Day two of tne re-opened Crews and Tangos. No entertainment at 8pm. as advertised. My sincere advise to the two new owners is to very quickly rid themselves of the current Entertainments Organizer and find someone who can hold the community together, bring in a solid lineup o performers rather than bitchy persona which I fear the current organizer may be and attracting similar. Please be very careful Crews and Tango; you have a great opportunity here to make a real go of the place. Be careful with your appointments if you wish to succeed which I do sincerely hope you will.

Nice but not
Just came back from Crews...and I have to say, they did a good job at cleaning the previous mess, however, this clean up is not enough to warrant the status the previous owners had. The overall feel does not even come close to the original Crews and Tangos. In the past I walked in with a sense of comfort and belonging, but now the feeling is a little cold and synthetic. Not too crazy over the choice of talent, and dj's but I am sure this will change over time. Where's all the staff we all came to know and love. And why so much advertising. I know that a bar is a business and the soul purpose is to make money, however, this new "Crews" makes it so blatant that its almost uncomfortable. Good luck to the new owners, but I am in no hurry to visit anytime soon.

Thank god because Goodhandys is dead
Thank god this place is opened. There has been no place to go and Goodhandys charges $15 bucks to get in and it is empty all the time.

Good attempt but fail
ok...so the talk of the town is this bar. And although its exciting, i dont see this as working out. I came all the way from Kingston and decided to check it out. I waited 1.5 hours outside, finally made it in, and all I saw was a very poor attempt at bringing back the much missed bar. Boys, and i mean that literally, why not rename the space, that way, you can claim it. Instead, you are riding on the previous ownership. If it was not for them, you would not be what you are now. All I can say "boys" what goes around comes around.

Spelling!
What's with all the U.S. spelling? Centrepiece, not centerpiece. Marvelled, not marveled. Omelette, not omelet. Picky Pete.

sinking ship
was there tonight, and what I see is a sinking ship. I used to love Crews, but was sorely dissappointed when security asked me if I wanted to re-enter, I would have to pay 10 bucks. Give it up guys, you have taken on more than you can handle. What happened to Farrah, Heaven Lee, DJ Carol, DJ Alec, Dom, Issaac, and all the great security people. What you have successfully done is kill a venue that used to be great, and turned it into a disaster. Go back to your jobs, cause you really have no idea on how to run a club. Its ridiculous at how fast you have killed an iconic venue in the neighbourhood. It was better off closed.
