Church threatens to pull children from Catholic schools
TORONTO NEWS / 'We just don't believe in homosexuality,' says Attaalla

Ti Agia Maria and St Demiana the Martyr Coptic Orthodox Church in Etobicoke is doing some damage control after its priest penned a letter to the Toronto District Catholic School board threatening that the children of 5,000 Coptic families would be pulled from Toronto's Catholic schools if the board moves forward with its equity policy, mandating equality for all gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans students.

Father Jeremiah Attaalla tells Xtra youth cannot understand concepts of sexuality, and homosexuality should not be taught in schools.

“We just don’t believe in homosexuality,” he says. “The public schools are already doing [sexuality]. Catholic schools should teach the message in the Bible.”

The message states that, “Homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered,” according to the Catholic catechism. The Pastoral Guidelines to Assist Students of Same-Sex Orientation, developed by the bishops at the Institute for Catholic Education, reads that "gay" is not an identity, that gay sex is “immoral and sinful” and that gay people ought to live a life of chastity. It is the primary guideline for instructing Catholic school administrators and teachers on homosexuality.

Attaalla says that members of his congregation are “upset” and “afraid” that their children “will learn homosexuality” in Catholic schools. He recently wrote a letter to Toronto Catholic District School Board director of education Ann Perron on behalf of St Mark in Scarborough, St George and St Ruiess in North York, St Mourice and St Verena in North York and St Agia Maria and St Demiana in Etobicoke.

“All these churches have a population of at least 5,000 families attending with 12 priests serving those churches, and I would say there is at least 80 percent of those families who have their children attending Catholic schools if not the rest are in private schools," he writes. "Not one of those families support the public school board because of the implementation of the (EIE) policy, therefore if this policy is implemented at last to be recognized in the Toronto Catholic District School Board even surroundings in which we have larger number of families as (Mississauga with over 7,000 families). We will not hesitate to withdraw our children at once from attending any Catholic school within Toronto or GTA if the requested amendments are not implemented and applied to the Equity and Inclusive education policy as the amendments are faithful to the teachings of the catechism of the Catholic Church.”

Perron did not reply to Xtra’s requests for an interview, nor did anyone else at the board. Superintendent of education Patrick Keyes, who was on holiday when Xtra called, referred the comment to the board chair.

In an Aug 5 Toronto Star story, Attaalla rationalized his letter by explaining that Catholics don’t believe children should be taught anything about homosexuality. “In these young grades, we don’t want teachers talking about God creating Adam and Steve. It’s Adam and Eve.”

Attaalla says his church has 5,000 families with children that attend Toronto Catholic schools. The board receives between $8,000 and $10,000 in public money for each student. So if the church makes good on the threat, it could cost the board up to $40 million.

Attaalla says he stands by his letter. Keyes says he is looking ahead now to the Aug 31 Toronto Catholic District School Board meeting, where the amendments to the equity policy will be debated. “The equity policy has already passed. What is up for a vote are the amendments.”

The Coptic Orthodox Church is an organization with some theological differences from Catholicism. In the Orthodox church, Attaalla says, priests can marry. He has a wife and two children, both of whom attend private school. Before becoming a priest, he says, he was a pharmacist.

When asked what he would do if one of his children came out as gay, Attaalla laughs, presumably questioning the seriousness of the question.

When pressed and assured the question is very serious, he stops laughing.

“I would love him,” he says before a long pause. “I would do what Christ would have done, love him even more than before. I would tell him to go and read the Bible. If this is his choice, that’s his choice. But that’s not according to what we believe... Schools teaching Adam and Steve is a reality, and it’s not what we believe.”

Why...
Why don't you ever do stories like this about Muslims?

XTRA is afraid of Radical Islamists
“Why don't you ever do stories like this about Muslims?” Because XTRA is afraid of Radical Islamists. If they can kill members of Parliament and blow up subway stations, then they can surely retaliate against XTRA for whatever they may say. The Catholics are pussies, they just quote scriptures. They're easy to take on. Where is the equality and the journalistic curiosity and integrity?

Holy Racism and Islamophobia, Batman!
Get a grip, people. There's so much Muslim-bashing going on here that you might accidentally hit your gay friend standing next to you. Who could be Muslim. And not ever threatening anyone with anything. The mainstream press sometimes participates in so much racist Islamophobia, it ought to be enough for everyone. But no, you seem to want to bring unreasonable fear of Islam here. Maybe the answer to your question is that ACTUALLY Christians and white agnostics and atheists who are against LGBTQI rights still have SO MUCH POWER that conservative Muslims are a lesser threat in comparison. But hey, maybe you think all Muslims are the same, or that Muslims have an overwhelming tendency to be terrorist, in comparison to other religions. Wrong-- racist white Nationalism poses a bigger terrorist threat than Muslim terrorist attacks, at least in Europe. (http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/opinion/2011/07/201172482841769458.html) Remember, there are always people in any religion or ideology or movement who are loving and kind and reasonable, and those who are not.

Ken Popert and Tim McCaskell
Jim, I assume that the reason why Xtra never reports on the homophobia of Muslims is because of the relationship between Ken Popert (the head of Pink Triangle Press, which owns Xtra) and Tim McCaskell (one of QuAIA's leaders). Popert and McCaskell go back a long time. They were both involved in The Body Politic (the predecessor of Xtra). See http://www.rbebout.com/oldbeep/baby.htm Aside from his current efforts to protect HIV gift givers from criminal sanctions, McCaskell's other current pet project is bashing gay-friendly Israel in favour of Israel's homophobic Muslim enemies. I assume Xtra is ignoring Muslim homophobia so that QuAIA doesn't look bad. It's all about winning the hearts and minds of LGBT people for QuAIA. You see, corruption is part of us, all of us, the very heart of us.

criticizing homophobia in Islam
Wow, the only problem with Jim, Egg and Jeff's "xtra never discusses homophobia in Islam" theory, is well, these articles where Xtra does exactly that: http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Muslim_conference_will_host_antigay_speakers_during_Pride-10422.aspx http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/Challenging_Islam_to_grow-1822.aspx http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Coming_out_at_Islamic_AIDS_conference-4132.aspx http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/Breaking_silences_at_Edmontons_Institute_for_Sexual_Minority_Studies_and_Services-7514.aspx Gosh now I wonder, if you guys are all upset that Xtra doesn't criticize Islam when in fact Xtra DOES criticize Islam, I can't help but think you guys are being totally disingenuous. Because I have a feeling none of you guys have any interest in supporting the very real actual gay Muslims who are working on this issue, but rather you would prefer to lump all Muslims (even including the gay ones) into one giant uniformly homophobic mass that you can condemn condemn condemn, because your true motivation is not fighting against homophobia, your true motivation is that you don't like Muslims.

NOT ALL MUSLIMS --just Valley Park Middle School
I have quite a few Gay Muslim friends, who escaped persecution by Straight Muslims in their own country. And they continue to fear Straight Muslims. The Group “Salaam” are lovely intelligent Gay Muslims who would not harass the non-Muslim and Muslim LGBT school children at the TDSB Valley Park Middle School. They would support them. My only question is: as a result of Muslim Prayers with an Imam in that school, are LGBT students harassed or treated any differently than at any other school? XTRA should investigate this. THAT IS ALL. There is no prejudice here only curiosity, knowing the nature of religion as a restrictive force in general. In one of the XTRA articles you mention there is a quote: “Jahangir says that silence is particularly troubling for queer Muslim youth. “Young ones at the tender ages of 13 and 14, who do they turn to, when they cannot speak of what they go through?” This quote exemplifies most the LGBT students at Valley Park Middle School which is majority Muslim. How open can they be about who they are and are they bullied? Do they have a GSA? This is not prejudice !!! This is concern. My concern is not about all Muslims, just the LGBT students at that school. I'm trying from different angles to get XTRA to do an article on that school from an LGBT point of view 'cause it's been in the news. It will be an election issue.

The Issue of Precedent
The issue of Valley Park Middle School is not just Valley Park Middle School. I'm trying to get people to understand the problem of precedent. The TDSB has basically said that religious leaders can pull kids out of class and conduct services in a school - and that it has no control over how those services are conducted nor what gets said. Mainstream Islam is very anti-gay. This is not a good situation for gays. Right now, many gays go to school officials for support. How will those gays feel when the school is seen as supporting anti-gay rhetoric? I guarantee you the neutrality of the school will be compromised.

Muslim parents object to LGBT school instruction?
If menstruating girls are excluded from Muslim prayers at TDSB Valley Park Middle School, then what do they do to LGBT students there? Are Muslim and non-Muslim LGBT students forced to hide out in fear? Do Muslim parents object to LGBT material taught at the school? Is this really different than the Catholic Board GSAs? Will XTRA open this can of worms? _______ http://www.torontosun.com/2011/08/08/protest-against-muslim-prayer-services-in-schools _______ http://news.change.org/stories/canadian-launches-petition-against-segregation-of-menstruating-girls-in-public-school ______ http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23470793-muslims-fury-forces-schools-to-shelve-anti-homophobia-storybooks-for-5-year-olds.do

Total hypocrisy of Xtra on Muslims
Derrr, how come no comment by Xtra on religious accommodation in schools by Muslims? This is a HUGE story with very big gay rights issues. There is some kind of favouritism going on. There are a whole lot more Muslims in Toronto than the 4,000 Coptic Christian kids mentioned in this article. (Coptic Christians by the way face violent attacks by majority Muslims in Egypt.)

Donate to remove Islam from public schools
Make a contribution to fight the Islamification of Canadian schools. Islam in the schools will not be good for gays. http://noislaminschools.ca/ Catholics don't like homosexuality. However, Islamists in Canada will make homosexuality illegal and punishable by death.
