Big Johnson's closes
COMMUNITY NEWS / New bar and grill to open in prime Church Street location in early 2013

A sign on the entrance to Big Johnson’s on Church Street states that the bar closed because the owner “failed to pay the rent.”

But manager Clayton DuQuene says the sign came as a shock to former staff. He says he thought the main reason the bar closed is because it “wasn’t a good fit” for the Church Wellesley Village.

As one of three managers at Big Johnson’s, DuQuene says he had very little contact with the owners. He knew them only by their first names, “Chris and Sam.”

“I really don’t know anything about that,” he says of the note. “It’s not [Chris and Sam’s] lease anymore.”

DuQuene, who will stay on as manager when the restaurant reopens under new ownership, says he is aiming to open for New Year’s Eve. If that doesn't happen, he plans to reopen early in 2013. He couldn’t reveal the name of the new digs because it still has to be registered. “But it definitely won’t be anything like Big Johnson’s.” The new bar will be a “much better fit,” he says.
The space at Church and Maitland will reopen in the new year as another bar and grill.

“[Big Johnson’s] just wasn’t executed properly,” he says. “It wasn’t the right ownership for the Village. The concept didn’t work, calling a place Big Johnson’s. I feel Church Street is over-sexualized. I didn’t think [we should have] called the restaurant Big Johnson’s. That’s just my personal opinion.

“I just think it was overdoing it. Church Street is already sexual. There’s no need to go further with that . . . You don’t see other bars called Dicks or Boobs. The name just didn’t sit well with me.”

The space will reopen as a bar and grill; the new owners are completing the renovations. DuQuene says the bar will continue to host the Friday bear nights, drag bingo and other special events.

DuQuene says he wants the space to be more welcoming for women. He plans to hire both men and women DJs and promoters to help the bar appeal to a broader clientele.

“We don’t want anyone to feel excluded, and we know lesbians are sometimes shut out of gay bars,” he says. “I feel like there aren’t a lot of places for gay women to go. Gay men have tons of places. That just doesn’t seem right to me.”

Big's new vocation!
That's very good news. As a resident and property owner in this great neighbourhood, I welcome something that'll be more representative of our diversity. I'm very tired with the overexposed sexual material we can see absolutely everywhere in the surrounding square mile consisting of The Village. I very much look forward to visiting the renewed venue when it opens. Thanks to all in charge of making this happen.

Really?
You don’t see other bars called ‘Dicks’ or ‘Boobs.’ No - just Woody's, Zippers, Cruise... not at all sexual.

bar names
I don't have strong feelings about this. I just wanted to point out that "Woody's" is a bar on the Church Street strip with a name equally as suggestive as "Big Johnson's", and it seems to fit into the neighbourhood just fine. I'm a resident of the Village, and I think we should be working to increase the fun and sexiness of the neighbourhood. If I wanted to live somewhere dour, I'd move to Bloor West Village....

Hocus Pocus at Church and Maitland
It's interesting Clayton believed the owners to be named 'Chris and Sam'. A previous story in Xtra said the owners were named Chris Kay and Tom Missios. The notice posted on the door is addressed to Andi Stavropoulos who was behind the Village Rainbow ! ... no mention of any chris, sam or tom .... Perhaps this group of obvious scammers should focus on how to run a bar / restaurant properly and profitably in a locale such as the Village instead of coming up with stories of who is the real owner, why they weren't successful in the past, and trying to deceive the public.

Why I Never Spent $$$ There
Best outdoor patio in the hood...so what do they do? They park CARS in it as some sort of promotion/contest thing. Also, on occasional nice summer weekend nights, they had club music blasting away like crazy...hardly conducive to wanting to sit down, enjoy a drink and a snack, and view the passing parade. Glad Big Johnson is gone...and good luck to the new guys who should seriously remember not to become overly reliant on the over-vaunted so-called "bear" trade.

It could have been worse!
It could have been worse! They could have called it Big Dick. Perhaps they should call it The Bear Den because the bears certainly did like it!

response
Clayton here, I really do agree with a lot of these comments, My explanation of what i meant by saying 'Big Johnson's' name didn't work on church street is i think we were over doing it, you are all right, there are places called Woody's, Zippers, etc. that do very, very well for themselves, and should, but these establishments are bars and clubs that are geared towards a party demographic... we were primarily a restaurant that catered to men and woman of all ages. I also personally felt that the Big Johnson's name didn't really feel inclusive to gay woman. We are all upset that this business venture didn't pan out the way we wanted, I'm confident that when this joint reopens we will have a great welcoming place to offer the church and Wellesley village and all its residents. hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday -clay

over sexualised?
why is Big Johnsons more sexual than Woody's, except we've grown accustomed to the latter over the decades?

it was a bad bar
who cares which body parts it references, no one really honestly cares about that. it's church street, there are bath house pictures glued to poles and sex and underwear stores huddled near the strip club. sex is not a problem. it tried to be a bar, and maybe people didn't (1) want to go to that bar over others, or (2) thought it was a crappy bar. the previous restaurant had seating set up outdoors for restaurant-like seating, not for standing at bar tables. look how they crowded the seating on the patio in the picture above. i went in for dinner once (indoors) and they cleared away the floor to "make space" for the bar crowd around 8pm. that's fine ... but the place was empty. they didn't want it to be a restaurant (which the previous restaurant was), they wanted it to be a bar. the idea of a bar failed, period. as a bar, right there, they're competing with woody's and crews down the street; and o'grady's and churchmouse across the street/kiddy corner. bar overload, batman. as a new bar, with nothing special to offer, maybe people just stayed at their regular bars. they have a lovely patio and i don't know why it failed. it's a perfect tree-covered patio space that is just itching to be an awesome place to hang out. it will be successful, one day, just not sure when or why!

Set-up to fail
When I was in TO I ate at Big Johnson's; the service was horrible and the food was worse. How many times do you go back to places that suck? I am surprised it lasted as long it did. Hope the next one is better!

Better luck next time
I went once and was half tempted to get up and go across the street. 8 pm on a Friday night and several items on the menu weren't available. Then it was a half hour wait for food. We had one beer and left. Do you want to be a bar or a dance club? Funny how they keep trying to open just in time for major dates like Pride (to cash in on the crowds with that great patio) and New Years (I smell a big covercharge). Rumor has it that its the same people behind everything that opens there. I'm glad the Rainbow is gone because who wants to eat to the smell of sewer gas. I just hope for their sake, that they address the mounds of garbage that accumulate to the back of the patio area for what seems to be several weeks at a time.
