519 swears in new board chair
COMMUNITY / Pascal Dessureault is the youngest chair in The 519 board's history

The 519 Church St Community Centre board of management elected its new chair, Pascal Dessureault, Oct 24. The 25-year-old corporate communications manager at Purolator is the youngest person ever to hold that position.

Dessureault says he’s been involved with The 519 since moving to Toronto from Montreal six years ago. He’s previously served on the board for two years as treasurer and vice-chair.

Outreach to expand The 519’s membership and community base is the board’s top priority, Dessureault says.
Pascal Dessureault wants The 519 to reach out to members of the community who haven't been part of the centre before.

“Making The 519 an umbrella organization is the ultimate goal so it brings in different generational groups, gender groups, geographic groups. The 519’s importance far outreaches its catchment area,” he says. “A key component of that will be fundraising and volunteer outreach.”

Dessureault says he’s happy with the progress The 519 has made to invite more groups in.

“In 2010 with our capital campaign, we expanded our space by 45 percent; and rather than doing more of what we were already doing, we’re reaching out to members of the community to give them space,” he says.

The board will also be establishing a two-year road map for program allocation and fundraising, with a goal of expanding The 519’s reach into the community.

“It’s also about inviting people who’ve never been part of The 519 before to be part of that community,” Dessureault says.

outrageous elitist patriarchal cisism
Why is an apparently white, gay cis male at the helm of a trans and queered organization?

@ Loogie
Why not? Do you have an actual criticsm about his qualifications, or are you content to simply condemn him for his identity?

Did they actually swear him in?
The headline for this story is "519 swears in new board chair". Did they actually swear him in - on a Bible? If so, talk about delusions of grandeur at The 519. I guess approving over $8 million in building renovations during uncertain economic times will do that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfmEwFwWnrU&feature=related

Your power and privilege are showing
Know1, perhaps you better check your power and privilege at the door and learn from Loogie about the intersectionality of oppressions and the underclass of gender perpetuated by the race/class/cis rulers. If you have not yet learned that trans queered realities of POC and marginalized anti-zionist queered Islamaphobic manbad, then you need to do some self-work before you lash out at those who you crush.

Congratulations
Wow, he's young and enthusiastic and already has some initial thoughts on what needs to be achieved. Since he's already served on the board for two years in other capacities, I'm sure he's well aware of and sensitive to all members of the community. I wish him good luck.

Ummmm...Yeah whatevvvahhh! Clearly, you confuse an ad hominum attack on someone you know nothing about with an actual coherent argument. Say something cogent if you wish a serious response.

Catchment what catchment would that be?
The 519 in carefully crafted wording still thinks Toronto is one gay village example from story...Making The 519 an umbrella organization is the ultimate goal so it brings in different generational groups, gender groups, geographic groups. The 519’s importance far outreaches its catchment area,... Far Outreaches is key wording. A surprising number of staff at The 519 have never heard of Queer West Arts Centre (Gay West Community Network Inc.) in the west end of the city, although we have been bombarding them for over ten years. We do occasionally publish some of their events. They don't promote us in any way shape or form. Phone callers are not told, they're alternatives in the city. The 519 should stick with their catchment area and stop poaching.
