Description
Political Femme – New Work by Julie Cruikshank Ottawa, Ontario – Political Femme features 20 new acrylic paintings by Ottawa artist Julie Cruikshank. Depicting 10 conservative male politicians in drag, the work comments on the homogenous male whiteness of North American political culture, and also the widespread fear of femininity and queerness pervasive in mainstream politics today. Political Femme uncovers the hypocrisy of taking a political stance against women's and LGBT rights in today's multicultural, multi-gendered world while simultaneously celebrating the beauty and ease with which feminine affectations and subverted gender roles can be adopted. It asks the question, 'what is there to be so afraid of?'. The work will be up from November 15th, 2012 to January 2nd, 2013. Vernissage to take place Thursday, November 15th from 7-10PM at the Shanghai Restaurant.
