Countering the anti-abortion protests on Bank St
SEXUAL FREEDOM / Group rallies against 40 day clinic picket

COUNTERPROTESTING. The anti-abortion vigil on Bank St will not go unchallenged, says Jenn Farr and members of the Pro-Choice Coalition of Ottawa.
(Noreen Fagan)
The anti-abortion movement is a powerhouse, organized by fundamentalist Christians with endless resources at its disposable. The movement remains unchecked — it systematically targets organizations in a crusade to deny women their reproductive rights.

It has been the single most powerful force in an ongoing social controversy — until now.

The Pro-Choice Coalition of Ottawa (PCCO) is an activist group ready to fight. With a strong pro-choice mandate, it is prepared to respond to any action threatening reproductive and sexual rights.

PCCO was formed in 2008 in response to bill 484, which, had it passed, would have amended the criminal code to apply extra penalties to people convicted of murdering pregnant women. The bill is believed by many pro-choice advocates to be the back door route to criminalizing abortion — protecting the fetus's rights as if it were a person.

Emily Symons and Jenn Farr are two of PCCO's core members. They are vivacious, enthusiastic and determined to fight for a woman's right to control her reproductive choices.

Farr, a mother of a teenage girl, is plainspoken about her reasons for joining PCCO. Farr is energized by being in a group that is not afraid of tackling advocacy work head on.

Both women are intimately involved in PCCO, working with other members to decide its future and outline its goals. Their definition of pro-choice extends further than women's reproductive rights  — it supports the rights for people to self-identify their gender and may autonomous choices about their sex lives.

"I would like to see PCCO achieve reproductive rights in Ottawa and that ranges from appropriate health care to rights to abortion services," says Symons.  "I would like that to be done without shame and without apology."

One of their first community events was at the community-wide Glebe garage sale in May. Members of PCCO set up a table, gave out cups of coffee and talked about reproductive rights. For Symons and Farr, the event was humbling — women shared stories about their abortions, families stopped to talk about reproductive issues and one older woman talked about her experience with being pregnant before abortion was made legal — over 20 years ago.

Nowadays, the average wait time for a woman to obtain an abortion in Ottawa is over three weeks with some women having to wait up to eight weeks.

"The government certainly isn't helping it become more accessible," says Farr. "Abortion over the years has become less accessible, fewer clinics — women have to travel farther."

There will always be women needing abortion services and if women have to travel to exercise their choice, they will. But traveling will not solve the ongoing problem of societal pressure applied by conservative and religious groups.

"I think that there is the stigma that women who seek abortion services are somewhat irresponsible or did something wrong," says Symons. "Anti-choicers will say you should have used birth control or you should not have had sex before marriage."

From Sep 23 until Nov 1, the religious right will be protesting outside of abortion clinics across North America as part of the 40 Days of Life campaign. Locally, their target is the Morgentaler Clinic on Bank Street, Ottawa's only private abortion provider.

This protest will be the third anti-abortion demonstration against the clinic this year.

This time the anti-abortion supporters will be up against a grassroots campaign called Every Day for Choice. PCCO, in conjunction with Planned Parenthood Ottawa, will be counter-protesting outside the clinic.

They will be on the sidelines with bright coloured posters supporting a woman's right to choose, and they will be working quietly to escort women to and from the clinic.

This is PCCO's first organized protest and one that will be evolving as the month unfolds. The group may be small but they are passionate, fiery and will not give up.

"It's very important to me," says Symons,  "I ride the bus past there [Morgentaler Clinic] everyday and it makes me angry every time I see them, I feel threatened as a woman who might need abortion services one day or might want to make that choice and it makes me feel threatened that I can't seek a health care service without being shamed and intimidated because of it."

Not all gays support baby-killers...
I fully support any attempt to slow down the abortion mills. The man-hating feminazis support murdering babies...probably because they are jealous all the hot girls like dick.

Sexual & Reproductive Rights for everyone!
Thanks to Ron for so *colourfully* supporting the forced gestation zealots. You could join the rest of the fundamentalist misogynists who see us wimmen folk as nothing but walking incubators... but I promise you: they aren't much fun! They might not accept you for who you are, either. If you could quit staring at your own genitals for a second you might learn to love and accept every gender, sex, orientation, shape and size. We've all got something to offer. Variety is the spice of life! Plus, we've got the glitter, leather and rainbows on our side. :-) P.S. Most of the hot grrrls I know like fist, actually.

I went to Morgentaler and Civic
I can tell you right off the bat, Morgentaler clinic is the best there is. I was awake for the procedure, so I was aware of what was going on, I could talk,I could make sure I was being taken care of. The nurse was wonderful, she let me look at the ultrasound when I asked, chatted, made sure I was sure, treated me like a human who owned herself. I had minimal pain afterwards, no complications and I walked out in one piece able to walk. Not everyone has an abortion beause they didnt use protection..lets be realistic! I went to civic and I almost crawled they were belligerant, snotty, abusive and DID NOT remove the foetus at 8 weeks...just mashed it up and left it in me, bones and all...I had it come out of me at home later that day after long contractions and immense pain..I had over 1 cup of jello-chunk clotted blod come out of me and then on one of my trips, I felt a spasm and next thing I know there are remains in my toilet...it was traumatic, and if iI wasnt a Med Tech myself and didnt know what was going on, I would have been screwed in the head for life. i distinctly recall a civic nurse smacking my leg harshly telling me to 'open, oipen open' as I was waking up....remember they DID NOT do a proper job (in a HOSPITALLLL!!!) and I was laying there is immense pain trying to spread and I could ot. I eventually told her to 'fuck off, you are hurting me' because the vibration of her smacking the inside of my leg ws awful on my insides. I know others who went to Morgentaler with good results. If yo want to support an organization, that clinic is the best there is. Oh BTW , when I wanted to see the foetus at the Civic, they turned the screen for less than 3 seconds than turned the monitor off, everyone walking around with noses in the air, judgemental, inconsiderate and rough. None of them should be in the health profession, the should have been employed on an Alberta oil rig, away from civilized ppl I should have sued..it was a nightmare. sorry 4 being graphi

Abortion is a crime against humanity
Thanks L, for your post proving how horrific abortion truly is. Read it and weep Jenn, if you have any humanity in you. And "wimmin" are hardly incubators of life since they have a natural revulsion to dick..they are a waste of skin. It's time to bring back capital punishment starting with the abortionists.

Judgemental Judgey-Judgersons
Thank you for sharing your story, L. I am sorry you had such an awful experience at the Civic hospital. I don't believe you don't need to apologize to anyone. ((((hugs)))) ---- (wish I could change paragraphs here) ---- I thank Ron for being so upfront in his misogyny. Your hatred for women who love other women is disgusting and criminal. NOBODY is a "waste of skin". Keep hypocritically condemning abortion in one sentence and supporting the death penalty in another. The more you post, the more you reveal the "pro-life" movement for what it really is: fundamentalist-driven hatred of women and a global movement to control our bodies and our sexuality.

ron you are not pro life
Ron, I respect woman, have a sister-in- law who is lesbian and I am pro'life in all aspects. I will stand by a woman throughout her pregnancy and after, for what ever she needs. I have a registered dayhome and I offer free children when possible. I am not for the death penalty as ALL life is sacred. It is not my job to decide when life should end. Please stop calling yourself prolife and respectful as you´re anything but!

anti-abortion but pro-choice
Just to mention ron hates everything and everyone, at least judging by his posts which should just be dismissed, anyone who claims to be gay but also a proud social conservative very likely has many inner demons tormenting him so I guess its understandable he can't find a kind word to use in any post. Anyways way to go PCCO! personally I think abortion is usually a bad idea and would prefer the child be born and adopted, but I fully realize that I cannot make that choice for any woman and that there is no one who can make that choice for any woman either, only a woman could make such a choice about her body and her life regardless of what me or anyone else thinks. I'd be more of a fence sitter and less vocally pro-choice but for those religious nutjobs trying to force their personal religious beliefs on others, especially those who protest and try to intimidate women into not going through with a planned abortion by harassing them at the clinic, I have no patience for those who think that their personal religious beliefs should be forced on others, that they alone know what's best for others. I was shocked to hear that it can take from 3 - 8 weeks for a woman to get an abortion in Ottawa, that's disgraceful! not to mention L's story of her experience at an actual hospital, what a shame, abortion may be legal but thanks to the social conservatives there's still a lot of work to be done ensuring speedy access and proper care for all women seeking abortions. I'd like to see some of the anti-choice protesters doing something useful like providing financial and social support for women who want to have their baby adopted instead of having an abortion, they should be doing more to make that a more feasible choice for some women if they want to stop as many abortions as possible but they have to stop harassing women at abortion clinics, that just isn't right.
