The Village
The Village/Le village is a non-profit organization working towards creating and maintaining a gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-friendly Village in Ottawa's downtown core, roughly covering a six by two block area surrounding Bank Street, from Nepean to James Streets (north to south) and Kent and O'Connor Streets (west to east).
After a town hall meeting to discuss the Bank Street reconstruction, held by Councillor Diane Holmes in Feb 2006, a clear message was made that a Village was of vital importance to the health and well-being of Ottawa's GLBT community.
Led by chair Glenn Crawford, the Village Initiative has:
•conducted an online survey to gain feedback on the needs and desires of the community;
•attended Public Advisory Committee meetings and Public Open Houses regarding the reconstruction;
•promoted the Village during Capital Pride parades;
•hosted several fundraisers including Build Our Bank; spelling bees, Hallowe'en parties and film screening block parties;
• help businesses and organizations put up rainbow or leather pride flags on their storefronts, increasing the number of flags in the Village area from seven to 18, to date
In 2010, we are now a eight person Committee dedicated to nurturing, supporting and growing the businesses and organizations that offer services to the GLBT community.
