LIMBO. Jammy Reyes came to Canada from the Philippines when he was 11. Now 24, Reyes faces deportation.
A Winnipeg prostitute who is featured in a local art exhibit is facing deportation to a country he hasn't lived in since he was a boy.

Jammy Reyes has built a following on the popular website Xtube.com. His personal story of drugs, crime, life on the streets and now, possible deportation, illustrates the contradictory attitudes that Canadian society has about poverty, prostitution and porn.

"I treat Canada as my country," says Reyes, a thin, boyish 24-year-old who came to Winnipeg from the Philippines when he was 11 with his sister and aunt. "I don't see myself being thrown into another country."

When Reyes was 16, he dropped out of high school and fled his family home. "I was curious about having sex with guys," he says. He went to Assiniboine Ave, long known as a gay cruising ground. "That's where you start off and that's where you start learning," he says.

Reyes met a couple of guys named Sweet Pea and Little John. "You should sell yourself," they said. "You're young and cute."

Reyes tried ecstasy. Then, shortly after he turned 18, he got addicted to crack cocaine and crystal meth. "That's when I turned really bad," he says.

In order to feed his addiction, Reyes needed more money. He started stealing clients' credit cards and threatening his aunt. He spent 15 months in jail and six months in rehab, and is almost finished a two-year probation.

Reyes' aunt, who has a restraining order against her nephew, never applied for him to become a Canadian citizen, nor did Reyes. Last month, he faced a judge to plead his case against deportation.

"I'm just so scared to think about that," says Reyes. But he doesn't believe he should be sent back to the Philippines. "I did something bad but they were petty crimes and I did my time," he says.

Reyes is returning to class next month, to finish his high school degree. He eventually wants to enrol in a culinary arts program. In the meantime, he's still struggling with drug addiction. "It takes time for people to change," he says.

He also wants to build on his Xtube fan base. "I've always wanted to be a porn star," he says. "It's a fantasy for me. I like being complimented. It's a self-esteem boost."

Starting this Thursday, Reyes is featured in a Winnipeg art exhibit called 100 Stories About My Grandmother. In the show, 100 male prostitutes from three different countries — Canada, the United States and England — tell stories about their grandmothers, to illustrate the fact that people who work in the sex trade have families just like everyone else.

Peter Kingstone, the creator of the show (who also serves on the board of Pink Triangle Press, which operates Xtra.ca), interviewed Reyes a couple of years ago while Reyes was living in Vancouver. Kingstone didn't know Reyes was back in Winnipeg — or about his possible deportation — until he was contacted by Xtra.ca.

"I think it's horrendous to send someone who's been here since the age of 11 back to a place he doesn't know," says Kingstone. "He spent over half his life in Canada. He fell into what the justice system considers illegal acts, but sending him back to the Philippines wouldn't help him, them or us. Canadians break the law all the time and we don't send them away. That's not how you build a community."

Kingstone, who got the idea for his art exhibit because his grandmother was a prostitute, supports Reyes' sex work. Mainstream society frowns on prostitution, he says, because most prostitutes aren't middle-class. But many of their clients are.

"The middle class is quick to jump on this issue without getting to the root of the problem," he says. "We have to realize that we're all complicit. We don't want to know our young sex trade workers. There's the odd one or two that we want to have at our parties. But we don't want it to be our son, or our neighbour, or anyone we know."

Even though, Kingstone points out, middle-class professionals are buying sex.

He's pleased to hear that Reyes plans to go back to school. But he is also supportive of his desire to keep working as a prostitute, if that's what he chooses to do. "Whether he's going to school, working at 7-Eleven or continuing to work in the sex trade, those are all things we need in our community," Kingstone says.

When asked about Kingstone's exhibit, Reyes says, "I don't see what relates grandmothers to prostitution." But he's looking forward to attending the opening of Kingstone's exhibit this Thu, Aug 20 at Winnipeg's aceart gallery, on the second floor of 290 McDermot Ave.

Reyes could learn his deportation sentence at any time. If the judge rules he has to leave the country, Reyes will be escorted back to the Philippines within a week.

System wrong
We shouldn't be deporting people who were minors when they came here. Period.

deportation not justice
Anyone who comes to this country as a child and grows up here shouldn't be deported for minor crimes just because they and/or their guardians never got around to applying for citizenship. That isn't justice in my opinion, anyone who has spent more than half their life here is a defacto citizen even if they don't have the paper work to back it up. Hopefully whoever is reviewing his case has a sense of justice and compassion and lets this man stay instead of shipping him off to a country he doesn't know/

Good. Deport hin NOW.
This country does not need to import whores or hustlers from other countries. This little criminal thug is a convicted scammer and a thief and deserves no sympathy when he's thrown on the next flight to the third world where he belongs.

Good Luck!
Heya, I've met lots of people who are in porn or have done it, even a few prostitutes. I can't say I'm a fan of the prostitutes only because I find it dangerous but if that's what really make you happen then do then...F@#* everyone else and do what makes you happy...although you should probably make amends with those you may have hurt with your past decisions and sit down with them and tell them how you feel. It's up to them to react however they do but at least it doesn't eat away at you. Also..as a culinary student...GO FOR IT! Cooking is a passion and you might be surprised if you'd rather cook and sell sex. As for deportation...children ho have spent more than half there lives somewhere should not be sent back to a place they don't even know. It's not right or fair. After spending so many years somewhere...that's home, not where you may have spent a few years or where u were a toddler. I was born in South Carolina but left at 5 months old...I know nothing of the place...I couldn't even imagine being sent to live there because the law feels that because I was born there then that must be my home..BS!

Who are you all to judge?
Seriously? What makes any of you commenter’s think that the work Reyes does is any less valid than your occupations? Sending him back to the Philippines is outrageous! He was moved here at the age of 11. Can any of you tell me that you had a choice on where you lived at that age? He wasn't the one who chose to move and has lived here most of his life. Many born and raised Canadians commit more serious crimes everyday and we don't exile them, why should we entertain that option with this boy just because of a technicality in paperwork? Reyes served his time just like any other Canadian citizen for his petty crimes and now he seems to actually putting some sort of direction into his life and it could all be ripped away. That’s beyond injustice. When Reyes relocated to Canada we didn't import a whore. We welcomed a family in search of a better life. If sex work is what Jammy feels is good for him then there are many men out there willing to pay him for his services. I say ‘good on him!’ It takes a strong person to actively pursue their dreams, especially ones clouded with such close minded negative stigma.

this is a no brainer
some sort of direction in his life! your kidding me! he's wanking on videos and stealing guys wallets. Whether its petty crimes or not, he's still a criminal and we do not need another one in Canada. Let him sort out his life in the Phillipines. Break down this case from an immigration stand point and this little man has nothing to offer in a great country. He can still pursue his XTube career from the Phillipines. Bye Bye

Deport
We have this same problem in the US. Our country is overwhelmed with third world immigrants. Its impossible to keep them out. They swim across the Rio Grande or overstay visas. Many of them are misfits and petty criminals. Why should society put up with this? We have enough home grown social problems. I think any immigrants who cause any problems at all should be deported immediately.

You act like he stole the wallet last night... He's paid his debt to society through the traditional justice system. Are you saying anyone to ever commit a crime should be branded a criminal for life?

To Jason
My comment is a reflection to his past, and so it should be when it comes to immigration hearings, as our "traditional justice system" does not seem to punish properly. If you have a criminal record of any sort the U.S, Britain and Australia will not even let you visit, let alone live there. Why should we be any different. He was an adult when he stole credit cards and made threats to his aunt, our Immigration system is finally starting to work and absolutely he should be NO exception.

No Sympathy
I'm from Winnipeg originally and there's more than enough crime there as it is, without this guy adding to the problem. I was there a couple of weeks ago and was shocked at the amount of violence and murder occurring in my hometown, most of it perpetrated by young people in this guy's age-group. He's just another criminal who threatened his own aunt for cash, which is absolutely despicable. He may be pretty but his character is lacking and is not a Canadian citizen. Let the Philippines deal with him.

I am not sure what stage this guy is at in the immigration process, but this article may be the worst mistake he has made.

Don't wanna get deported? Keep crimes to yourself.
I know this is serious but I couldn't stop laughing. I don't think that on the eve of a deportation decision you would want it made public that you have a drug problem and your aunt has a restraining order against you.

Hey Hank...
Hey Hank -- if the IRB did not ALREADY know that Jammy Reyes has a drug problem and his aunt has a restraining order against him... then the IRB is even *more* of a disorganized mess than I even suspected.

HILARIOUS!!
This article is just that: HILARIOUS! Being an immigrant myself who moved here at the age of 6 and the same age as this idiot, I had the inkling to have sex with guys at even a younger age than 16...did "I" choose to leave my house and do drugs and sell my body? No! I chose to finish school and do all the shit that I know I "needed" to do so I had something to fall back on. I've done that shit and have gone back but at least I knew well enough not to eff up my life - including my relations with family! By the way being Filipino myself, most people who immigrate here from the Philippines at around that age or older DO remember life there and probably still have some imprint of how it is to live in a third world country. I don't sympathize with this guy at all. His crimes weren't petty and this article isn't helping his cause. Most people are looking at the fact that it's because he's a sex worker that he is being deported. Well, I think it's the fact that he openly admits to being a drug-addict, did stints in jail, and has a restraining order from his aunt - THAT is why he is getting deported. And if you guys really want to look at it from a positive point of view - he'd probably make a killing being a prostitute in Asia...just go over to Thailand and he'd make a killing! =P Worst. Article. Ever.

NOT a canadian
He's not a canadian, saying he is because he's lived here a number of years cheapens the idea of being canadian for the rest of us who were born here. i mean why doesnt everyone in the world come live in canada for a few years so they can claim to be canadians as well? i dont care how long he's been here, his type are not what we have built canada on, they come here and bring us down as a society, burdening us with their problems. a canadian who has lived in the philippines that long would not get special treatment from their government. i dont hate him or wish him ill but he made the choices, he rocked the boat and now he pays the price. im sick of the rest of the world making us look bad and taking advantage of our liberal nature.
