UPDATE: Police investigating possible hate-speech violations at Journey of Faith conference
HATE SPEECH / Investigations follow complaints from Egale, MPP Glen Murray

Complaints from Egale and the office of Toronto-Centre MPP Glen Murray have sparked an investigation into possible hate-propaganda violations at the fourth annual Journey of Faith conference at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre July 2 and 3.

The Islamic conference hosted clerics from Canada and around the world, some of whom have been known to spread hate propaganda against gays, Jews and Christians.

Following reports in Xtra and the Toronto Star, Egale and Toronto Centre MPP Glen Murray filed complaints with Toronto police and the Ontario attorney general’s office.

Egale’s letter to the attorney general noted that one of the guest speakers, Bilal Philips, advocated that gays should be executed if they were caught in the act, and that Philips was recently expelled from Germany for expressing those views.

“I ask that you take immediate action to determine if the comments made by Philips in Toronto this weekend contravened the Criminal Code,” Egale executive director Helen Kennedy says in the letter. “If so, I trust that you will promptly initiate appropriate redress and implement measures to ensure that he does not continue to promote hatred and genocide against the LGBT community in Ontario.”

Brendan Crawley, a spokesperson for the attorney general’s office, confirmed that the incident was referred to the chief prosecutor, who in turn referred it to the Toronto Police Service.

“Ontario has no place for any form of hate speech directed at any identifiable group, including members of the LGBTQ community,” Crawley says.

Constable Bisla of the Hate Crimes Unit confirmed that Toronto police are investigating possible breaches of the hate propaganda law but declined to give further information about the investigation.

A spokesperson for Murray’s office said that he’s been led to believe that the police did monitor the conference over the weekend to ensure that no hate speech took place.

Kennedy says it’s important to crack down on hate propaganda because it can have insidious effects on society and the queer community.

“Homophobic and transphobic bullying is rampant in Canada's schools, and we continue to see disturbingly high suicide rates among LGBT youth. As such, it is crucial that the promotion and legitimizing of hatred against the LGBT community not be permitted to continue,” she wrote.

JULY 1:
An Islamic religious conference will host a series of controversial speakers, who have called for the death of gays, Jews and Christians, in Toronto this weekend while hundreds of thousands of people will be celebrating Pride.

Bilal Philips is scheduled to speak at the Journey of Faith conference. He has been banned from Australia, the UK and Germany for his violent anti-gay preaching.
The fourth annual Journey of Faith conference will take place Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The MTCC is an Ontario Crown Corporation under the responsibility of the minister for tourism and culture.

One of the speakers at the event is Jamaican-Canadian Bilal Philips, who has been denied entry to Australia and the UK and was expelled from Germany earlier this year for his advocacy of the death penalty for gay people. He has also claimed that AIDS is a divine punishment from Allah for homosexuality and fornication.

Another speaker is Abdur Raheem Green, who has called for the enactment of Sharia Islamic law and called for death by stoning for homosexuals and adulterers.

Other speakers include Abu Usamah Atthabi and Abu Abdissalam, who have expressed sympathy for extremist terrorists and said that Muslims should not cooperate with Western governments.

Toronto-Centre MPP Glen Murray says that he first heard about the conference Friday morning and that his office has filed a complaint with the Toronto Police Hate Crimes Unit.

Toronto police’s 52 Division was not aware of the conference when Xtra spoke to them Friday afternoon.

“This is hate speech, and hate speech is a felony according to the Criminal Code,” Murray says. “The police should take action. I hope the full weight of the law comes down on these people.”

Murray says that the MTCC isn’t mandated to screen its events for hate speech, although it is bound by the Human Rights Code of Ontario.

Trinity-Spadina MPP Rosario Marchese, whose riding includes the MTCC, says he will be filing a complaint with the attorney general’s office Monday morning.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s on Pride weekend or not,” he says. It’s unbelievable that people could have such feelings. You would think they would hide their views and not express them as if it's an acceptable point of view. “

An email to the Journey of Faith organizers was not immediately returned. The conference website claims that its purpose is to “introduce humanity to the sources and understanding of Islam in order to increase their level of faith, enlighten their hearts, enrich their minds and ultimately transform them in becoming exemplary Muslims who will follow the footsteps of the Prophet of Mercy.”

The website further says that the conference “would also endorse the proper understanding of religious sources in avoiding following human whims and desires often leading to extremism, intolerance and religious violence.”

Egale executive director Helen Kennedy says she’s disappointed that the conference is happening but that Egale has not taken any action over it.

“There’s a lot of hate against our communities this weekend,” she says.

Queer Ontario’s Nick Mulé also expressed concern about the conference.

“There are concerns about government property hosting such events if in fact the hate laws are going to be contravened,” he says.

That anti-gay speakers will be hosted on provincial property recalls a similar controversy that occurred in 2009, when dancehall artist Elephant Man, whose lyrics call for violence and death to homosexuals, was scheduled to perform a concert in Downsview Park.

Action by several queer groups and individuals led to the federal government finally banning Elephant Man from performing in the park.

Calls to the MTCC were not immediately returned because of the long weekend.

I think we
should apologize to them for being gay. I know members of the Pride Board that may be able to do that on our behalf.

Where are QuAIA and its allies now?
During the recent controversy over Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) and its campaign against gay-friendly Israel, a number of QuAIA's allies made presentations to Brent Hawkes' Community Advisory Panel in favour of QuAIA marching at Pride. I understand that these groups included the Canadian Arab Federation, Dykes and Trans People for Palestine, the Pride Coalition for Free Speech, and Salaam Toronto. It will be interesting to see if QuAIA or any of thse groups issue news releases today or tomorrow condemning the homophobic Muslim speakers at the Journey of Faith conference. Or, do they only condemn gay-friendly Israel?

disgusting
Barbarism has no place in Canada. We can tolerate all kinds of weirdness, but not violent oppression. We are a democratic nation bound by a constitution and a rule of law, we prohibit the death penalty and corporal punishment, and criminalize all forms of violence against everyone. Teaching punishment of death and abuse for homosexuals to a listening audience goes against everything Canada represents. Cut the mic, cut the tax exemptions, deny these assholes a place of assembly, and deny residency to anyone else who wishes to import this filth.

use our hate speech laws
With any luck this event will be recorded for evidence of hate speech being used so those responsible can face Canadian justice. The police use undercover agents against social activists and protest groups, how about they use them instead to attend this event and monitor it for hate speech and charge those responsible? Btw Queer Ontario does support QuAIA's right to participate in Pride and has come out with a statement against hate speech by these preachers. Its even right there in this article.

What does QUAIA have to do with this?
I'm not sure why QUAIA has already been mentioned twice in this article. Am I supposed to think Doug and Rich are my allies as a queer Muslim? I'm prefer to be both free of both those who hate me because I'm Palestinian and those who hate me because I'm queer. And this is precisely why no racist gays, homophobic Muslims, or solidarity activists will ever speak for me. Have fun at YOUR Pride boys! I have nothing to be proud of this year, clearly.

All Muslims are Complicit in Violence
Muslim Queers escaped from places where death and/or prison is the punishment for Homosexuality. Some things are worse than death !! The Koran and Sharia demands either lashes or prison or death for Homosexuality. _______Until there is NO PUNISHMENTS for Homosexuality in a country --I will not dare to travel there --nor to give them my money. That seems to be all the Muslim countries in the Middle East and Africa. The ones who escaped the violent Muslim countries agree with the violence unless they stand up against the violence !! All the silent Muslims are implicit in violence as long as they are silent !! For example, Muslims who bomb each other's temples --and Muslims who do not object to the bombings are equally guilty. Canada's Hate Speech Laws don't have enough power to undo SHARIA LAW. It is Muslims themselves who have to combat Muslim HATE. It would be nice if the hatemongers at the “Journey of Faith” Conference could actually be charged and prosecuted for spreading Hate. But then, would Canada be open to terrorism --as was Denmark?? Will there be protests against Muslim violence in the PRIDE Parade ?? ________ http://journeyconference.com/

Xtra's coverage
I assume that Xtra posted its July 1 article on the homophobic Muslim speakers at the Journey of Faith conference because the Toronto Star first broke the story on June 30. See http://www.thestar.com/news/pride/article/1017936--anti-gay-speakers-at-muslim-conference-during-pride But, Xtra has not yet reported that Dykes and Trans People for Palestine intend to show solidarity with Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) by marching in Saturday's Dyke March. This was first reported in a July 1 article in the Toronto Sun. See http://www.torontosun.com/2011/07/01/anti-israel-group-promises-dyke-march-appearance

Why do we let them into the country?
I really get pissed off when some Muslim fanatics are allowed into the country to spew their hate and ignorance. Let's establish racial profiling for Islamists at our borders. In addition, round up and deport the Islamists already living here illegally.

Hate, Violence and Discrimination Always Wrong
Just as Israel's treatment of the Palestinian people and Muslim people is wrong, so it is also wrong for Muslim clerics and leaders to advocate hate, violence and discrimination against LGBT people, western countries and Jewish people. Hate is wrong-- always has been and always will be. If these speakers are from inside Canada, then charge them under hate crime laws. If they are from outside Canada, they should have been denied entry. Canada should be safe and welcoming for all law-abiding people: Muslims, Jews and LGBT people included.

which path will you choose?
i have been to this conference before and they do not call for the killing of jews and christains. as for homosexuals, there is a death penalty for it in the Islamic state. these speakers have helped thousands upon thousands of nonmuslims, many of whom are born and raised in the West and no different from u, come to Islam by way of evidence and reason. u can see many of their conversion stories on youtube. the speakers come to talk about Islam which is a religion that's calls mankind to worship One God and follow a way of life that is pleasing to Him by following the scripture that He has sent and by following the example of the Prophets as opposed to following our own desires. i would hope that u search for the true religion from God, whether u find it to be Islam or something else, and follow it. and when i say 'true' it should be something that is rational and supported by evidence to be a religion from God. do that as opposed to following your desires in thinking that it is ok to engage in homosexuality.

Off topic
I posted a comment, removed twice, in response to a letter by Rama Singh in the thespec.com. Unlike xtra the Hamilton Spectator doesn't tolerate opposing views. Diversity teaches nothing. Diversity didn't teach Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus to live together in the Punjab. Diversity didn't teach Africans not to practice female genital mutilation. Diversity didn't teach Jamaican-Canadian Bilal Philips not to advocate for the death penalty for gay people. Nor did diversity teach Abdul Raheen Green not call for the death by stoning for homosexual and adulterers. I will gladly give up a thousand Bollywood movies if Canada would keep out one Abdul Green.

re: Alex
I was wondering the exact same thing about ron (he doesn't capitalize his own name so I don't either) in Vancouver, I fully expected to read some nasty comment from him about immigration and Muslims in general but he hasn't much to my surprise. As for M from Toronto's comment as those who read my comments will attest, I regularly stand up against labeling all Muslims as anything, whether its anti-semitic or homophobic or whatever since I do realize from my own personal experiences and plain common sense that Muslims are a very diverse group of people, as diverse as LGBTQ people or any other group and I regularly oppose those who lump all Muslims together. However I firmly believe that no one should have the right to preach hatred and violence against any other group of people whether its done through religion or otherwise. I'm a big supporter of free speech, except when it crosses the line into hate speech that advocates violence or is so demeaning that it supports violence against whatever members of whatever group of people. My response calling for these Muslim preachers to face Canadian justice if they resort to hate speech is no different if it had been Christian, Jewish, Hindu or anyone else for that matter. Its also why I'm a staunch defender of QuAIA's free speech rights, even though I'm not and never will be a member, because they have never crossed the line into hate speech and there's zero indication they ever would. I'm used to being called a Muslim apologist and much worse, but that post was the first time I think I've been accused of being anti-Muslim. Well everyone is entitled to an opinion.

where's the pro-Israeli groups
For all those commenting about the lack of comment on this issue from QuAIA and other critics of Israeli policies I would like to ask where is the condemnation of these preachers views from pro-Israeli groups such as Kulanu? What has Nadine Oberman done about this beside wonder where's the critics of Israeli policies on this issue? Nadine hasn't even stated whether or not she agree with the views of these two preachers. Where's Jim, Jamie and the usual crew of anti-QuAIA types and what have they done to oppose these Muslim preachers preaching violence against LGBTQ people? Why weren't they protesting at the MTCC? Why should it be the responsibility of those critical of Israeli policies to comment on or attack or do anything about the preaching of anti-LGBTQ violence by these two preachers? What about the rest of you? QuAIA has always been very clear that they support the human rights of everyone in the middle east and around the world, just because someone is critical of Israel's human rights record towards the Palestinians, who btw are a mix of Christians and Muslims in no way means they support Hamas or anyone else who would deny the human rights of others in spite of your best efforts to conflate the two. All these attacks on critics of Israeli policies for not doing or saying more on this particular issue yet the silence from anti-QuAIA types and pro-Israeli groups is also quite notable yet no one is attacking them for their silence. Talk about hypocrisy! At least Queer Ontario, a group supportive of QuAIA's free speech rights and EGALE along with MPP Murray have come out with statements expressing concern about the violation of our hate speech laws while the anti-QuAIA types have done nothing but ask where's QuAIA's statement against these preachers. Its not surprising though that they would leave it to the HR activist groups they attack regularly to do anything about this while they just sit back doing nothing themselves.

This needs to be addressed
I want people from the gay community to be aware of what's going on right now in the TDSB. Is anyone following it? The TDSB has been allowing public schools to conduct religious Muslim services in some of their schools. Most concerning to the gay community is the words of the TDSB superintendant on diversity and Barbara Hall that the school should have no say over anything that gets preached at these services. If EGALE can voice its objection to this imam speaking at a public facility and cops are looking into it, I want to know how the TDSB can say it won't be responsible for anything an imam says at a school during school hours. How can this double standard exist? - Rae I need to see some input from the gay community on this one. It's important. Rae
Please look into this, Ontario Ontario

Yes...
these "services" include discriminatory practices such as having girls/women at the back and women on their menstrual cycle segregated, on top of "lets kill the gays" sentiment now seemingly rampant and tolerated in Toronto. Mayor Ford hasn't helped, he is making me feel unsafe in Toronto. I believe all gays are under serious threat and at risk....But what are our city Councillors consumed with? Simplicity
Rich, it may surprise you , but not me that the "anti-QuAIA" crowd has not, nor will it in the future advocate stoning to death people for being gay. The real outrage here is that these preachers and QuAIA are in the same tent regardless of your protestations. When QuAIA "marches hand in hand with those who they know would wipe all Jews out", they must answer for the actions of their comrades. It is that simple.

re: Murray
You're right about your comment being very simple, my point was that those complaining QuAIA and other critics of Israeli policies weren't speaking out against these two preachers were rather hypocritical since the anti-QuAIA types and pro-Israeli groups weren't speaking against these two preachers either. Why is it the responsibility of QuAIA to denounce these two preachers but not anyone else? That is hypocrisy. QuAIA has never supported, in any way shape or form, anti-semitism, or any group such as Hamas that also denies people their human rights. QuAIA supports the human rights of all people and does not support any gov't or group that denies anyone their human rights. Yes its true that those who support Israeli's denial of human rights for Palestinians often claim groups like QuAIA support groups that also deny human rights like Hamas but that doesn't make it true as is obvious to anyone who bothers to check out their website where they clearly state "We support any solution in which all citizens — Jewish, Arab, Christian, Muslim, or otherwise — have full legal and political equality in a secular democracy" How does that fit in with your belief that QuAIA supports those that would want to see all Jews killed? QuAIA isn't anti-semitic, has never used anti-semitic or any form of hate speech and is extremely unlikely to in the future considering that many of their members are Jewish themselves. Besides which the preachers in question weren't advocating killing Jews, they were advocating killing LGBTQ people. How can you seriously claim that any LGBTQ human rights activist group like QuAIA would support killing other LGBTQ people let alone Jews or anyone else? If its so obvious to you then surely you must have evidence of QuAIA supporting anti-Jewish hate groups, don't be stingy, provide the evidence so that you may convince others that QuAIA wants to see all Jews killed like you claim. Seriously lets see the evidence that what you say is true and not sla

un-free speech of liberals
Let's face it, it is far easier for muslims,eg., to say what they think, and get protected, than it is for others to question multiculturalism, or 'diversity.' I'm sure someone reading this already wants this voice silenced. And they will succeed. Anyone questioning multiculturalism is branded a racist. It is far more trendy to attack gay-friendly Israel. How many have the guts to say what they really think knowing they will be shamed, ostracized, or fired (at work) by liberals? Not many. Political correctness has kept us quiet. Who is willing to risk open discourse again? It's been about twenty years since it existed. There are signs of it reappearing, and it is stomped out at every step by liberals in the courts, schools, at work, in the press; through human rights tribunals etc. Free speech. I miss it. I miss the western world.

Muslim prayer in TDSB public schools
If Muslim prayer is allowed in TDSB public schools, then so should the prayers of every other "ethnic vote" religion: Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Shia & Sunni Muslim (separate!), Asatru, Shinto, Wicca, Voodoo... Why not have theoleptic rituals of dancing and chanting, with rare ancient musical instruments, colourful costumes, incense and flowers, and spirit possession and animal sacrifice, in school hallways. We can only hope they don't blow up eachother's prayer ceremonies, as they blow up eachother's temples......... Parents of every religion should demand prayer ceremonies for their children in their religion --and specific sect-- from their school principal. But then we would have religion in the schools... I would not want to pay for that from my taxes........ When people dress in masks and costumes on the street and they are not part of a theatrical group or a parade --they scare me. We all know that people who wear masks and costumes on the street do not integrate into Canadian society --nor any other. They want whole societies to become like them. They have their own agenda......... The Ontario Supreme Court ruling says:?"The school may sponsor the study of religion, ?but may not sponsor the practice of religion." ??The act of seating girls behind boys IS a practice of religion. Muslim female clothing is religious practice. The reading of the Koran is indoctrination and the parts which call for the killing of infidels and homosexuals and the beating of wives --is against the law. The TDSB should be taken to court over this violation. This should become an election issue. Will it be forgotten by the fall? Mark your calendars and keep on it.......... http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/tories-on-muslim-prayer-in-schools-its-not-for-politicians-to-decide/article2088911/
