DOUBLE TROUBLE. Bloggers in the US are urging readers to put pressure on Tim Hortons, after a franchise owner decided to sponsor an anti-gay event in Rhode Island.
UPDATE, 1:45pm, Aug 10: Tim Hortons has released a statement on their website: "It has come to our attention that the Rhode Island event organizer and purpose of the event fall outside of our sponsorship guidelines. As such, Tim Hortons can not provide support at the event.... We apologize for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this may have caused."

Canadian cultural icon Tim Hortons is under fire today for its association with an anti-gay fundraiser in the US.

The Providence Daily Dose reports that a Rhode Island Tim Hortons franchise is sponsoring an event organized by the US National Organization for Marriage. A pamphlet for the event, billed as the "First Annual Celebrate Marriage and Family Day," lists the coffee and donut shop as a sponsor.

Tim Hortons' corporate policy suggests that the company does not sponsor political or religious groups. But because most outlets are owned by independent business owners, the "final decision to make a donation is at the discretion of the store owner," says the company's website.

Xtra.ca's calls to Tim Hortons' New England office were forwarded to the company's head office in Ontario. The chain has not yet responded to our request for a comment.

Bloggers and Twitter users have sprung into action, urging readers to contact Tim Hortons through the chain's online feedback form. Change.org has also created an online petition.

Truth Wins Out, a US website dedicated to "fighting rightwing lies and the ex-gay fraud," has slammed Tim Hortons. "Give them your thoughts about the value of corporate policies that apparently were made to be broken."

The Providence Daily Dose also has harsh words for the coffee and donut chain, which has been trying to expand its reach in the US market. "What better way to win over the hearts and minds of Rhode Islanders than to put their name and reputation behind the nation’s largest and most odious gang of gay marriage opponents," writes Wesli Dymoke.

Twitter is buzzing
with calls for boycotts and action against the chain. But others say that this was the action of one franchise owner, and that now is not the time for a boycott against the entire company.

Organizers of the Rhode Island event say their goal is "to esteem marriage and family to their proper place in society and make a statement that Rhode Islanders believe strongly in these cherished institutions." The organization's president, Maggie Gallagher, is set to make a speech at the event, which will also feature concerts, a "wedding renewal ceremony," and — one would assume — a lot of donuts and double-doubles.

Tim Horton's website lists 36 locations in Rhode Island.

Tim Horton's can resolve this issue very easily.
"Twitter is buzzing with calls for boycotts and action against the chain. But others say that this was the action of one franchise owner, and that now is not the time for a boycott against the entire company." Well, ONE FRANCHISE OWNER notwithstanding, all the corporate executives at Tim Horton have to do is contact the franchise owner in question, and tell him or her that they don't want their company associated with this sort of anti-Gay cause. Problem solved. The so-called National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is bent on denying law-abiding, taxpaying Gay American couples ANY of the legal benefits and responsibilities that Straight couples have always taken for granted. Posters and brochures for the Rhode Island NOM fundraiser include the Tim Horton's logo. That alone is enough to make me stop patronizing that business. And anyone who has a problem with boycotts should consider the boycotts of Pepsi, McDonald's, Ford, and Campbell's Soup that have been organized by evangelical Christian group, just because those companies chose to treat Gay people with dignity and fairness.

Call Tim Horton's today
I am really impressed by the power of facebook and twitter today. Within 30 minutes, I received over a dozen facebook notices about this- and it's clear that dozens of my facebook friends are calling or emailing Tim Horton's head office today to let them know that this is not OK - even if it is a franchise in the US. Keep calling until they let us know they've told the franchise that they can't sponsor this event in Rhode Island!

Your logo, your responsibility
I find it hard to believe that Tim Horton's logo use policy would be the same as its donation policy. Allowing a business owner to contribute some refreshments or money to the little league is one thing. Allowing her to tarnish the company's visual identity is quite another. If Tim Horton's logo is on a National Organization for Marriage pamphlet then I hold the company responsible, no matter who put it there. It seems likely this decision would have been made at the corporate level. If not, then the company needs to get its franchise owners under control.

SAMPLE LETTER for the online feedback form
Until the executives at Tim Horton's clarify the position of the organization re: gay rights, I will no longer be buying my morning coffee from you. Your logo is associated with the National Organization for Marriage, a US-based anti-gay group fighting to keep spousal benefits, inheritance, health coverage and adoption from same-sex couples. Shame. I will not accept any explanation that renounces corporate responsibility in the name of franchisee autonomy. The company's management can and must denounce the Rhode Island wing of NOM unambiguously. Until then, I'll pick up my donuts elsewhere. Please feel free to contact me AFTER your executives make a statement. Sincerely,

Diplomacy
Many thanks for reporting this story. Speaking as the Truth Wins Out writer cited above, I like Tim Hortons (I prefer them over Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, at any rate) and think an all-out boycott is a couple days premature. Tim Hortons has an opportunity to swiftly correct the situation with any wayward Rhode Island franchises.

Contact Head Office
Contacting the company though their Customer Service form will not accomplish anything. For years I worked on the receiving end. Contact Head Office in Oakville at Tel: (905) 845-6511, ask to speak with the Office of the CEO, failing that attempt, then Corporate Communications and drop your rant on them.

Censure the Owner!
The blame here is not Tim Horton's, but the individual franchise owner. Pressure should be brought to bear on Tim Horton's to suspend this franchise owner's licence immediately! It's a shame that someone would take a proud Canadian symbol and align it with American fundamentalism and bigotry.

news coverage is fail
thanks to xtra and a choice few other publications, we are starting to see reports about this issue. Question is - where are the other media, and why are they remaining mum about the subject? Stakeholder / Shareholder fears? wake-up Canadian/major media!

not only American bloggers
Bloggers in the US AND Canada are joinging forces for this. So far, "Gay Persons of Color" and "A Canadian Lefty in Occupied Land" have posted about this. Canadians who want to sign the petition can include both your city and province name in the field for "City," and select "CA" from the list of states. For the petition software, "CA" can act as both California and Canada.

not over yet
Yes, Tim Hortons did issue a statement but it did not mention the specific controversy. They are still listed as a sponsor on the NOM Rhode Island website. Please continue to contact Tim Hortons (905-339-5644) and request that they demand that NOM remove their name and logo from the materials advertising the hate rally.

Boycott Rhode Island Tim Hortons
corporate or local sponsorship of organizations that preach the message of hate is something that is unforgiveable, for corporate head office not to take immediate action against the franchise owner means that they support how the corportate name is being used to support HATE. Time for that hate to disappear and make an example of this Tim Hortons in Rhode Island, and maybe against the whole Tim Horton's organization, I know I will miss my daily 1 or 2 doses of Tim Hortons but the principle remains, to support Tim Hortons at this time is to support hate against your fellow Canadians and Americans. I will spread this to all my net works until it is resolved

Shareholders A.G.M.
I wonder if someone can find out when and where is the next Shareholder's Annual General Meeting. I think it will be coming up soon. This might be time to add a little Shareholder pressure , perhaps even put the Item on the Meeting's agenda and have that Owner called on the floor for his actions!

Jumping on the bandwagon
I'm trying to read this as much as possible before I make afinal decsion. On reading T/H's website, it CLEARLY states that they DO NOT support religious, political or other groups. So if indeed this happened, this could truly be an error on their part. Timmy's needs to 'come out' and give a proper statement stating who was responsible for supplying the event and. If person's unknown had a 'hidden agenda' in causing this whole thing then this should be investing as this clearly violates T/H's policies. It would be great if this whole episode can be pushed aside, but maybe T/H might consider hiring Gay/Lesbian staff as spokespeople

Gay activists gone nuts!
This is not an anti-gay event. It is a family event! Even if the organizers support traditional definition of marriage. Family values help happiness, reduce crime, etc, etc. I understand Tim Hortons does not support this. As for policy. Tim Hortons gave money to various gay events. Right? Why cannot they give money to family events? Completely unfair. Please do not buy their coffee, donuts until they come up with balanced policies. Ask other do the same! Gays have their rights, but families have their rights too! This changes my opinion about gays. Their activists are very bad, bad people.
