Bruce LaBruce’s newest film, LA Zombie, is screening at TIFF. LaBruce sat down with film critic Matthew Hays to talk about his continuing interest in zombies and porn. LA Zombie, you may recall, was recently banned in Australia.

Watch the video below or read excerpts from the interview below the video player:

On zombies: “They’re viral – so it’s the perfect metaphor for not only AIDS but the paranoia about homosexuality and how it can be contagious or how it can be that kind of negative influence on society.”

On his motivation: “As the gay movement becomes more and more conservative and conventional, for me, the last refuge of gay radicalism is pornography. There are certain things you just can’t escape when you work in gay pornography. The very fact of ass-fucking or man-on-man sex, cocksucking, whatever… it’s an inescapable kind of visual image that is confrontational for an audience. A lot of liberals can say they accept homosexuals if they behave themselves… but they don’t want to see this kind of hardcore sex. There’s still something about gay sex that’s… about abandon and hedonism and really pushing sexual boundary.”

On gay films: “The state of gay cinema is quite dire now, because if people are only making films that mirror what goes in conventional society, then it’s just kind of like a pale imitation. There’s nothing intrinsically interesting about it.”

hack films are easier than organizing
"the last refuge of gay radicalism is pornography" I basically only ever read about Bruce LaBruce for more cannon fodder against him, and sadly he never disappoints. This is exactly the kind of individualist, vanguard nonsense he's always spouting. Porn can be great, it's true. Even bad (airbrushed, mainstream, typically-masculine) porn can be a nice relief at the end of a hard day. The vehicle to a brighter day, however, they are not. Queer community organizing or direct action, these are where i place my hopes and energies. Porn can be a part of these movements for sex workers rights, trans access to health care, queering sex ed classes, abolishing prisons, opening the borders and other real world issues that effect queers all over. If porn or pornographers like labruce are NOT part of these movements, however, they aren't much more than another wank film.

15 minutes are up
Memo to Bruce LaBruce, Sky Gilbert, Todd Klink and Nina Arsenault: Enough. Your 15 minutes are all up. Go away now. Just go. To America. Japan. The Gobi Desert. Anywhere. Just go already!

Actually,...
The gay movement is not becoming more conservative. It's simply that those of us who tend to the more conservative side are no longer being ignored. And keep in mind a gay conservative is still far to the left of most of the str8 world.

Conservative Gays - ugh!
If it weren't for leftist queers the conservative homosexual would NEVER have found there *conservative voice*. You may think those straights to whom you aspire truly accept you but secretly, and likely even openly, they still say things like, gosh he would look so good with a woman and a family.

J Roman really conservatives?
Do you even know the difference between a conservative and a liberal? I think you don't since in the Gay world at least the Gay left would be viewed as conservatives since they are the traditionalist but my advise about the film is rather easy if they want to watch it just get the director or Xtra to create a torrent of the film and make it free online so people in Australia could view it for free but I really doubt it conservatives fault for everything and also I hear in Australia they did have elections which the Labor Party of Australia has been in power since 2007 after defeating the Liberal Party of Australia back in 07, yeah of course conservatives are always to blame since they Gay left is always blaming something for their problems if it not conservatives its has to be a certain ethic group. If you don't believe me about the current political situation in Australia just look it up and you find that the Aussie conservatives are not to blame at all but rather their leftest Labor Party

the tide is turning
James, gay "conservatives" are anyone who is not a "queer left". "Queer left" are people who indulge people who think the most importan community issue is a grown woman getting all pissy at white men because she cannot find boys' clothes to act out her "gender trendiness" (and I presume attract young genderfish). The tide is turning at last. Two decades of Queer/Gender/Trans and Womens' Studies Theory bullshit has paralysed Toronto as a "queer" community by demanding that all homosexuals adhere to their "religion" or be labelled "conservative" or "bigot" or "phobe". Those words mean nothing now. The impetus behind them means nothing to those homosexuals who they identified as their "oppressors". The Gulag Wall is falling down on the House that Queer Built. Thank fucking, Priam!

Maybe gay radicalism should stay dead...
Comming from a younger gay man, this may sound very very harsh, but maybe the reason gay radicalism is dead is becasue all of the old gay radicals are now dead from AIDS...maybe ''abandon and hedonism and really pushing sexual boundary'' were not such good ideas in the first place?
