Source recounts dating murder suspect Luka Magnotta
NEWS / Says man seemed obsessed with serial killers

"Julie" – the name is a pseudonym – tells Xtra she dated Luka Magnotta in Toronto for just over a month early in 2006. Magnotta is the man wanted in the video-recorded murder and dismemberment of a so-far unidentified man whose body parts began turning up in Montreal and Ottawa on May 29.

Luka Magnotta posed as a fab boy in a May 2007 issue of Xtra's sister publication, fab magazine.
(Tony Fong)
“It’s a good thing he didn’t kill me,” Julie says. “He was a very cold person.”

She remembers Magnotta as a loner with little love for Toronto’s club scene. When they met, he had just left his job as a dancer at Remington’s, a Toronto gay strip club. He had then moved into work as a gay porn actor and was making most of his income as an escort, she adds. Magnotta’s escort work took him abroad, Julie says, which may explain why police believe he is in Europe.

One of his escort profiles, in which he was listed under the name “Jimmy,” includes a client review. “I felt as though I was trying to have sex with a dead fish, so I just gave up,” it reads.

Julie says she and Magnotta did not have sex in the time they dated. There was “no intimacy, no nothing,” she says. Magnotta liked holding her hand, she adds, but would not kiss her on the lips.

She says Magnotta told her that when he was a teen, he had sex with his biological mother, who suffered from mental illness. Julie says she became wary of Magnotta because of his seemingly consuming interest in serial killers. “He would talk about them constantly,” she says. He was especially interested in Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo, though Julie says she doesn’t believe Homolka and Magnotta ever dated, or even met.

Julie paints an image of a Magnotta with two very distinct personalities: a quiet, passive-aggressive man who would “hold all of his anger in,” and a vain, conceited man who would demand she take pictures of him to post to his multitude of online profiles. She says he spent much of his time checking the internet, especially his YouTube channels, where he would later post grisly images of animal mutilation. “He was very self-obsessed, very narcissistic,” she says. He was prone to sudden mood swings, she adds, but was also “a very good actor.”

Julie says she hasn’t heard from Magnotta since she dumped him in March 2006, except once, when he called her after being stranded by a client. She says she severed ties after that.

"He always wanted to be famous," Julie says. "I guess now he is."

Not "famous", he's infamous. There's a massive difference. Although I think today's society may be completely missing that.

load crap
Things must be slow on the news desk today, when the assignment editor hand out this little gem. Julie stuck with the alleged cold blooded killer for a month. This is not investigative journalism, just a load of made up crap by Julie. Publish his real name, if its true. Come on Xtra you can do better than this.

Yes, it is investigative Journalism
Michael, this is one of the biggest stories in North America right now (also on the front page of the Daily Mail in the UK). Reporting on sources' information and accounts is precisely what investigative journalism is about... if you read any of the pieces in the Globe and Mail, The Star, or the Daily Mail, you'll find the same sort of quest to get to the truth. Of course it's smart of you to question every bit of information we receive (as we all do), but it truly seems unnecessary to be so rude about it towards this piece's writer. Do you really need to make someone feel rotten so badly? If so, it says far more about you than it does anything or anyone else :)

I don't doubt its a big story. This sidebar story is tabloid journalism not investigative. Rude, oh come off it Serafin, publish his real name. This doesn't story rate to be listed in the same league with a meritorious newspapers like the Globe and Mail.

I get your point Michael, but can't help but disagree. Publications and journalists use un-named sources all the time... it's part of the job. Protecting sources' identities has been an integral part of journalism for decades -- there have been countless court cases and jailings of journalists and editors for contempt of court. Even Mary Tyler Moore did an episode about it... and if you can't trust Mary... ;)

Hideous little man
Bad hairplugs, cheap toupee, body of a 13 year old girl, and hung like a gerbil - check out his encyclopedia dramatica page. I can't believe any one would find this thing attractive. There is no way he dated Karla Homolka - the guy is nuts. Glad he identifies as a bisexual NOT gay - that side can have him. YUCK.

Doesn't matter whether he's bisexual or gay
Ron, I find it really ignorant and biphobic that you're "glad he identifies as a bisexual" and not as a gay man. So you're okay if being bisexual is somehow seen by others as being connected to his killing spree? And you're okay if the bisexual community is somehow blamed for this event? If he WERE gay, and someone said "I'm glad he identifies as a gay and not as straight, the gay side can have him", that would be homophobic just as your comment was biphobic. Anyway, a lot of conservative folk are going to use this guy to "explain" why *all* LGBT people are immoral or "messed up". It is not the "side" he's on that matters; he was a psychopath, doesn't matter if he was a gay psychopath, a straight psychopath, or a bisexual one. Instead of turning on and mindlessly attacking people of minority sexualities, let's stand in solidarity with them.

He may not really be a bisexual
Ron, Luka Magnotta may not really be a bisexual. Consider what we know: (1) He didn't show much sexual interest in Julie, Xtra's source for the above article. (2) He seems to have spent most of his time in the gay male community. (3) If he is a nascent serial killer, it's significant that his first victim was a male and that he sexually assaulted the corpse. Serial killers generally hunt the gender they are attracted to. (4) If he is a bisexual, he's a very effeminate one. By way of illustration, staff of the Toronto Sun filmed Magnotta in 2007 when he came to their offices for an interview in which he denied that he was dating Karla Homolka. In the interview, he acts and sounds like an effeminate gay male (By saying this, I am not insulting effeminate gay men. I just believe that effeminate characteristics and behaviour in gay males is genetically-based). You can watch the Toronto Sun interview at http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/sunnews/canada/archives/2012/05/20120530-145541.html

unnamed sources
There is no shortage of material about Magnotta both online and off, much of it impossible to authenticate. The bulk of it suggests self-promotion. As long as Xtra's keeps Julie's real name hidden, are we to expect more unnamed sources to step forward to fill Xtra's pages, looking for self promotion.Julie story can't authenticate, without naming him, What are you afraid of?

Ed's note
Michael, we corroborated Julie's story, to my satisfaction and to the satisfaction of the reporters working on on it, prior to publishing it. I don't think anyone knows what to expect next in this story arc. Julie asked not to be identified and so we won't be doing that. The information the source provides about Magnotta seems more germane to the story at hand anyway.

Stick to what's important
All the stories about this creepy disturbed guy...they are all irrelevant for the moment anyway... The only important fact is Luka Magnotta is wanted for 1st degree murder charges (though some media is reporting it as 2nd degree) and interfering with the dignity of a dead body. The (suspected) victim is 33-year-old Lin Jun of China who was studying in Montreal at Concordia University. Police said they are able to authentic the video made of the brutal killing and that the body parts sent through the mail are that of the male victim in the video. Who Luka Magnotta is/isn't, who he dated, who he had sex with, his state of mind and so on...ALL IRRELEVANT FOR THE TIME...he is seriously dangerous and on the run... The only concern for the moment should be finding him and getting him off the streets. Even more so with the hint (from a letter included in one of the packages mailed) that he might do this again. There is ZERO reason to debate and argue the details of his life... The media's ONLY concern should be plastering his face across every possible outlet to find him! Once found and in police custody... THEN ... can we try to understand who/why/what. I highly suggest the media stop wasting valuable time trying to sensationalize for readership and get posting his face everywhere. Even people who think they can do nothing can post his face on their Facebook, Twitter, mySpace and blogs... Make his face known and that he is wanted for very serious crimes and likely to repeat. After all is said and done... then debate and scrutinize his life till you're black and blue in the face. Have at it! @ Xtra... Why don't you send out his photo and description to every queer media that you can think of? Get his face on the websites of Out magazine, Gay.com, Tetu.com, QXmagazine.com and like websites... This would be FAR more productive then interviewing some woman he dated for a month back in 2006...

Nina Arsenault tells CBC she was Lukas lover
I cannot believe that Xtra interviewed "Julie" when another source of info was more than willing to talk. CBC tv had an interview with Nina Arsenault, the transgender person who is well known to BLTQ people in Toronto, claimed on tv to have been Luka's lover 10 years ago and provided intimate details of his weirdness. Since Arsenault seems to crave media attention and since she claims she was this monster's lover, why did Xtra not contact Arsenault? Why was Xtra scooped by CBC on this? Hmm???

Magnotta's history and psychology are important
Kris, I agree that the main goal is for the authorities to apprehend Magnotta and to widely distribute his photo as a wanted man. But, the police, the press and the public do need to understand Magnotta's past history and consider his psychological motivations. That may allow the police, the press and the public to anticipate his next move or potential future victims. For example, in 1997, Andrew Cunanan started a series of killings that claimed the lives of five men. Cunanan first travelled from California to Minnesota and killed two gay men that he knew. He then travelled to Chicago and killed a wealthy older man who he may have known. He then travelled to New Jersey, killed a man and stole his truck. Finally, he want to Miami and killed Gianni Versace and then himself. Maureen Orth wrote a book on the murders entitled Vulgar Favors. Orth contends that if the police had, after the initial killings, interviewed Cunanan's friends, family and acquaintances in California, they may have learned about his sex-for-money interactions with older gay men and his obsession with successful gay men like Versace. As a result of that information, they may have been able to anticipate Versace being a likely target and warned him. So, it's not a waste of time for the police, the press and the public to research Magnotta's past history and consider his psychological motivations. It may even lead to his early capture and save lives.

Brian - I was thinking the same thing
I was in Minneapolis in August 1997 when this whole thing with Cunanan began. Loring Park, the gay area of downtown, was just on edge because the news kept showing how Cunanan kept changing his appearance, he was an expert at accents, fake names, rambled all these lies about Ivy League Colleges and growing up like '90210' when he really grew up with nothing and never went anywhere, he was the son of immigrants who spoke little English and he spent much of his youth helping them. What's relevant here is how gay men can often live in this permanent fantasy of what they wish were true - being gay, we often skip growing up because usually our lives don't involve kids, rarely long term relationships, we can reinvent our past to be something fascinating and nobody would know - being closeted, most of us are expert liars and great at covering our tracks. The gay community has no rules - so you lie to someone and rip him off - who cares? That's life in a community that's still anonymous and has little to no interest in each others well being, or long term involvement. Those who are mixed up to begin with, unfortunately, end up in the gay world with disastrous outcomes 10-15 years later when the 'new' wears off and nobody's noticing them anymore.

Some Truth
The reason the person did not wish to use there real name was because they did not wish to have there name involved in this. Although it might have been better to just say nothing at all. As for Nina’s story of her “romance” that was 100% Bs Now that is a person who just wanted to get some attention on main stream news only (No offence xtra). It is also funny to add that she had a book launch to promote. If you do your research and look more deeply into her story you can see many holes in her timeline. She says that they meet in 2002 and that he was her first lover once she started her transition. Well first, on her bio page she list that her transition started in 1998 not 2002. That would make Luka around 14/15. Also she said that he was 18 when they met at Remington’s, well he can not work at Remington's until he was 19. She was also on kink in 2002 and it filmed in 2001 and at that time she had a Boyfriend who was even on the show with her and they were together from 2001 - 2004. Someone like that is almost as sick as Luka himself. Who uses this type of situation to get noticed and promote themselves? For the record, I am using a fake name because I myself do not wish to be part of this. But this information can be found on her bio. I have known Nina since 1998 and was very good friends with her and know how she works and knows first hand that her story is BS.

hoodwinked by another creep
truth, thank you for exposing this heinous media whore Nina Arsenault. In the Star, she claims she has a "relationship" with Luka for 3 weeks! On CBC tv she implied it was more substantial. They definintely met as Luka was interviewed by Nina and others on some tv show. She most likely did know the creep. And from her own admission in her old Fab column at that time she was vampirising disability money from mentally challenged men for cheap sex so she could pay for her endless self-mutilations. Using a connection with someone who will end up as one of history's cannibal killing monsters is par for the course for the odious creature Nina Arsenault. A phoney whose 15 minutes are long over.

If you listen to the video from the show she was a judge on. You can clearly hear in her voice that she does not know him nor is he her type with the comments she is making. Knowing her and reading what she has written about her type as well proves he is not what she likes in men. Watch the video and the way she acts when being interviewed. Hand on face, talking to air and not making eye contact. Those are all things people do when they are lying. Not to mention when someone talks about this type of subject who would put on full hair and that horrible make-up. She to me is almost as sick as he is for using this to promote herself

Hi Truth. That's a pretty big logical leap. I wondered when I saw that vid and compared it with Nina's interview with CBC if she had already ended her association with Magnotta by the time the CoverGuy segment was shot. Nina's description of Magnotta is congruent with those of virtually every other source. There's no reason to suspect her story is false.

Hi Matt. If you do a little research like I said you will see holes in her story. I am also posting as someone who knows her and knows the way she works the media to benefit her. Even it is morally wrong. I understand that Nina in some circles is respected and I can not deny her body of work is impressive. But using this painful situation to get ahead is just wrong on all levels. Again take the time to research what I am talking about it is not hard to find the evidence online and see for yourself.

Hook-up Gone Horribly Wrong!
This is a tragic case of a "hookup gone horribly wrong"! According to the unfolding story, Lin is thought to be a closeted gay man who happened to seek for friends, sexual and/or romantic encounter online through on-line gay dating sites. It is very typical for many of the gay Asian males fantasize for Caucasian males, and I believe Lin was mainly seeking for Caucasian friends online by claiming on his profile: "looking for Caucasian" for fun and/or long term relationship or "attracted to white only" or somewhere along that line. Ultimately, Magnotta saw Lin as his vulnerable target when his sicko moments turned on, and eventually has lead to Magnotta’s psychopathic motives to Lin’s body. As the story unfolds, it is highly and unlikely Magnotta and Lin are "Lovers" as stories claimed Magnotta has the inclination of white supremacy ideology. If this were true, Magnotta would strictly dates guys of his own race. Lin happened to be the prey of Magnotta, and Magnotta’s killing fantasy. Lin’s hook up with Magnotta happened at a very wrong time. Lin would imagine himself his romantic encounter with Magnotta could eventually lead to a long term romantic relationship. Instead, the naive side of Lin would never have thought this hook up could cause him his life. The gruesome video of Magnotta's showed Lin was completely naked lying in Magnotta's bed at the beginning. He was seen comfortable being blind-folded with his arms and legs loosely tided up by rope suggested Lin's openly submitted himself to kinky foreplay prior Lin's death.
