Sept 5 is Odyssey's last hurrah on Howe St
GAY SPACE / No new place yet but owners looking to finalize offer soon, manager says
Natasha Barsotti / Vancouver / Thursday, July 22, 2010

Mark your calendars. On Sept 5, legendary gay stomping ground The Odyssey will close its doors after more than 25 years at its Howe St location.

"As we were expecting two years ago, we got our notice from the city that let us know they're going to be moving forward with the project that everyone knows about - for housing," the club's manager, Will McGuire, told Xtra on July 22.

The Odyssey first got word in May 2008 that its lease was being terminated because of a joint city-province agreement to build 110 units of supportive housing for HIV-positive people on the site.

"We got our notice from the city that let us know they're going to be moving forward with the project that everyone knows about - for housing," the club's manager, Will McGuire, told Xtra on July 22.
(Shauna Lewis)

Since that notice, the start of construction had been delayed because of a lack of provincial funding. However, the BC government finally announced on May 25 that it had allocated just over $22 million to the long-awaited project, effectively signalling the end of the club's many leases on life.

Funding for the Howe St development is part of a three-way $225-million investment partnership among the province, the City of Vancouver and Streetohome Foundation that will see 1,006 new supportive housing units go up on eight sites owned by the city.

"Originally, we were given till the end of August," McGuire reveals, "but we really felt strongly that we wanted to hold a really great final party and make it feel really sort of official. So we asked about the possibility about extending it to the Labour Day weekend, and they were accommodating about that."

"We'll do our best to make sure we see absolutely everyone that we can during Pride and during our last month," he adds, "because I know everyone's going to want to get in and party as much as they can during that period."

"There will absolutely be a Feather Boa show on September 5. Joan-E will have the last word, and somehow that seems fitting," notes McGuire, who's been at The Odyssey for five years.

Then there's going to be a mourning period, he says.

"There's not a replacement for it opening up around the corner on September 6, which is the really unfortunate thing," McGuire says.

"There's a real sense of loss, and I think our customers are feeling that, our staff is feeling that. At the same time, it's important for everyone to realize it's certainly not over in its entirety yet," McGuire hints.

He says the owners are "looking at finalizing an offer on a place at the moment."

Further information about that will be forthcoming "as the timing becomes more appropriate," McGuire says, declining to reveal the location of the potential new space, except to say that it's "in the downtown area."

McGuire says the space in question is one that the club has been the most hopeful about.

"We certainly haven't gone this far with anything other than the Denman location last year," he notes.

The Odyssey's attempt to win city approval to relocate to Denman St in 2009 was nixed after city council bowed to public pressure from neighbours, who complained about anticipated noise pollution.

McGuire says the search for new digs has been ongoing since 2008, but it has been incredibly difficult to find an appropriate location.

"We're not just looking to start a new business," he points out. "We're looking to transplant an existing business which has a lot more requirements than just moving a licence."

It depends what space is secured, says McGuire, when asked if The Odyssey will be relocated before the end of the year.

"It obviously takes a lot less time to move into a space that's an existing club than a space where you would have to create a club," he points out.

Though the building permit is still not in hand, a BC Housing spokesperson says the club's demolition is expected to begin in late September or early October.

Let's hope its only FAREWELL & NOT GOODBYE!!!
AAAHHH The Odyssey. It's the place where I first got on the stage in heels. It's the place where i met the majority of my close friends and it's the place where I felt most at home. The familiar faces, the familiar queens, the familiar smell! The Patio Bar, The Styrofoam Signs, Shower Power, Lips Inc. Sissy Boy, Scary Fairy & Hallow Queen... Joan-E, Justine Tyme, Carlotta, Willie Taylor, Diana Rose! DJ Drew, DJ Jules! Susan, Guy, Will, Peter, DJ, Rene & Ronnie. The Miss Odyssey Pageants, Miss Bailey's, Misunderstandings and Missed Connections! Ladies and Gents, this is surely the end of an era....we've got a month left to "do it up nice" however this is yet another example of Vancouver becoming a NO FUN city. The Gray-Haired Mafia West of Denman squashed our chances of moving into another venue when we had the chance, and now the party will end. How is it that one of the largest gay populations on the west coast has like 3 venues to go out to, while other big cities have 5 times that amount??? Something isn't right with this picture. And apart from me chaining my voluptuous body to the front doors, the building will most certainly go down, as many of its patrons have done over the years! Too many memories. Odyssey...you will be missed.

A BIG THANK YOU to RON
A business lesson that the current owners might have to learn the hard way if the try to re-create and re-locate the Odyssey. It's next to impossible to take a club and put it in another location and expect it to survive. It's been tried thousands of times before with bars, clubs, restaurants, etc. If the owners want to invest the tens of thousands of dollars to give it a try, they had better be prepared to lose that money if it doesn't fly. I think it's time the community moved on. The Odyssey had a great run and I enjoyed a number of years there parting on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Change is good people. As time moves on, all the employees will adjust to a new life working elsewhere and the O's customers will find themselves new places to spend their nights having a good time. At this time, I'd like to thank and point out to those of you reading this comment the huge part Ron V (manager) made making the O what is is today. The current manager and staff members wouldn't have had it so easy had it not been for Ron's hard work over the years. Thanks to the Odyssey's owners and to Ron.

Hold onto your hats
Will and the owners have been working hard to keep this interuption from happening, but alas, time is not our our side. On the upside, there is a very exciting opportunity that will knock your socks off! Let the universe know that you want this to happen, and then be there when The odyssey needs your support in the future, just like they have been there for so many for so many years. Cheers to queers....

Something smell funny
Question to Blair Smith, why would a business (in this case a bar) that only has roughly 6 weeks until they close, wait until they have in fact closed before announcing a new location (quote, "a very exciting opportunity that will knock your socks off ") ? Seems to me there's one of two things going on here. Either the Odyssey's owners / manager are very stupid giving all their staff & customer base a chance to get new jobs and places to frequent or there actually isn't a new location in the works for the Odyssey to re-open. Which of the two examples is it Mr. Smith ?
Let it Rest in Peace, Vancouver B.C.

Respect where it's due!
With the reputation this city has for nightclub failures, I don't know that I'd use the term "stupid" to describe the people who managed to run one successfully for a quarter century... Hell, even now it's only closing to make way for this housing project, certainly not for lack of business! The timing might suck, but giving staff an opportunity to find employment and support themselves seems to be the responsible thing to do... I'm kinda stoked and have my fingers crossed that a new venture will work out! While there are other venues out there, anyone who prefers them is already going there, so I really don't know that they'll see an influx of business... with the closing of the O I sense the return of epic houseparties until they can find those of us who loved it a new home!

The magic left with Ron
I can remember my heart pounding standing in the line up on howe street. It was 1999 and I was 18, yes 18. I was worried someone would recognize me and I would be outed. When I entered those big red doors at the front, my life changed forever. It opened up a world that I never new existed, I didn't just enter an old run down building but a sanctuary from the oppressive world. I was no club kid, but the O was more than a club, it was a rite of passage for many. To me the O died when Ron left. He was the glue that kept it together, sadly it was never the same without him, I know many would agree. Ron made sure the O was an inclusive safe place where everyone felt welcome. Unfortunately, shortly after he left, it turned into a mismanaged, clique, arrogant establishment. The regulars left and never looked back. The O lost its magic, the nostalgia was gone, it had become what it already was but no one ever saw, an old run down building that was destined for demolition. The magic left with RON. I hope the next Gen finds their odyssey.

RON V...I think not.
Sorry but Ron V was hardly someone I would ever call a shining example of a manager with his taking advantage of the youngest boys to work there....and this new manager though noble in his efforts to save the O uses hidden cameras to spy on staff. Perhaps it is time to lay this dinosaur to rest. Even Joan E is getting tired.

Arrogant Will
So sorry to see Odyssey go, not sorry to see Will McGuire go. He is rude and agest and I have personally experienced bullying by him. I am a decent guy, not a drunk and respectful of all, and in no way desrved to be treated so poorly by this arrogant punk. Many of my friends stopped frequenting the club because of him, perhaps that is because most of us are late 30 and 40's. seems Will has some sort of prejudice. Goodbye Will, sure hope you don't turn up at another gay club, we don't need youe kind of behaviour in our community.

Willy the KID
He was a rude kid, and I told him his days were numbered as manager. A very poor choice by the owners IMHO. He ran the place right into the ground, with his very weak people skills. You cannot treat (Customers) like dirt and expect to stay in business. Maybe, a bit of humble pie will knock him down a few notches. I'm not sure why he has any reason to be arrogant. Insecure maybe?

Good Venue, Good Manager
I've always found Mr. McGuire to be a pleasure to deal with. He runs Vancouver's busy gay nightclub, but also goes out of his way to build relationships in Vancouver's GLBT community -- not just with customers, but with non-profit organizations and even other businesses. Will is a man who donates money and energy to GLBT charities in Vancouver, and deserves better than to be slammed by anonymous commmenters in an online free-for-all.

OPEN YOUR EYES!
Listen to you bunch o' bitches! I've been going to the Odyssey for over 10 years now, and have been a part of the performance staff off and on for the last 9 years. In reviewing the last 2, I think Will McGuire has actually raised the caliber of the Odyssey quite a few notches, in his time as GM. I don't believe that cameras are ever specifically used to "spy on staff", they are used to monitor liquor control, the movement of patrons about the club and acts as a security tool! What kind of reputable business doesn't have some kind of security camera in place??? Camera footage is used in identifying criminals, thiefs and gay bashers (and in today's day and age, I'm glad that my local gay bar has security cameras in place to keep me safe!!!) In reviewing the last year specifically, I think Will has implemented professional advertising, marketing and promotion of the Odyssey, as it marched bravely on into it's reclining years! I've been part of many of the Sunday shows where we actually worked on sets and concepts to add to the drag shows, that Will made happen! If you were put in your place, you probably deserved it! Will has a tough enough job running a club where everyone wants VIP, everyone wants something for free, no one is happy with anything, no one wants to go home, and everyone has a better idea. Add an element of intoxication to the average patron and I think you'll see that bar staff have a hard job to perform and a tight rope to walk. I think everyone does a great job...because the Odyssey is still going strong, for another month! I think the Odyssey is a rite of passage for many (myself included) and I hope we can have an Odyssey v.02 for our youth, our elders, and even the above posting, over opinionated, mouthy middle aged bitches (again, myself included) who also enjoy a night out on the town, from time to time!

@JMS
While I will agree and say that Ron was a big part in making the Odyssey happen, the reason he was let go was because he was breaking the rules constantly. Letting you in at 18 was illegal, and he did that with a lot of people. He also took advantage of the younger staff like someone said and also had a substance abuse problem. He started off probably ok, but then ended up in a bad place. And to say that Will ran that business into the ground doesn't even make any sense. May I remind you that it's still the busiest gay club we have, and has been busier than ever these last few months. You're clearly just a bitter old homo and I have a feeling you might one of Ron's old boys. So please, how about you keep your idiot statements to yourself. Especially since they make you look like you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Miss O
Well here we are again, a free for all online bashing ... What is it within our community that we feel compelled to show our basest ugliest contemptuous nature... The Odyssey was and will be a very important page in Vancouver's gay history and to see that be overshadowed by comments made by bitter hateful ol queens saddens me, granted the O may not have been everyone's cup of tea, it doesn't take away the fact that it has played an important part in the lives of many in the lgbt community. Whatever your feelings are of staff and management past or present are irrelevant..we are losing for the time being yet another gay space.. a space that was very supportive of various charitable orginizations , a space that lent itself to the talented and often unique performers in our city.. Imagine for once that you are a tourist coming to Vancouver after September 5th and want to take in a drag show and have a good laugh? Well truck on thru to Seattle cuz there aint much going on here in the way of Drag.. some of you might applaud that, I for one do not..not because I will be losing out on some extra cash from time to time.. but because the opportunity for me and my sisters like Carlotta, Milan, Raye, Mandy , Kamelle,Kiki, Celeste,Coco,Devana,Ionna, Jaylene, Kristina,Willie, Summer and especially Joan-E who is legendary at the O and many countless others has been diminished... and like they say it ain't a party until a drag queen shows up... Well I think it is sad the Odyssey is closing but it is important that people be able to bash or say with they feel they need to say. Looking here at the comments I see the majority of comments disliking Will unless your a Drag Queen wanting work. Lets face it sure Ron was not a perfect person. He had his faults like us all but he treated the general public with a lot more respect and called the community his home. Will took Ron's recovery time to manipulate his way to the top ousting and pushing out the real people that made up the Odyssey leaving only his so called friends. (or the ones afraid of him) Will is agist and I have personally seen him laugh at people and call them fat and other things behind their backs to his pretty friends. If the owners open again you can guarantee my business will still continue to go elsewhere with Mr. McGuire at the helm. P.S. Joel - I would like to point out that Will lets underage boys in as well. As a matter of fact I am friends with a couple and Will is friends with them so he knows their real age. =)

In response to above *I see the majority of comments disliking Will unless you are a drag queen wanting work* wow talk about generalizing... contrary to popular belief drag queens don't need to suck up to anyone in order to secure work , the girls I know already do work full time in other fields, i myself have a successful carreer and don't rely on drag as a source of income, I can only speak to what I have seen over the years and that is little to no difference from the departure of Ron who was himself great ...or to Will "the evil one" gimme a break.. it is what it is , The O is closing on the 5th of September so lets enjoy it while we can.. with that being said I will have more time to spend at Numbers to ensure I will be able to bare Del Stamp's baby .. @ Robyn..Sorry I just said that based on really only you and Summer Clearance supporting Will. But there is a lot of difference since Ron left and Will took over. Large numbers of older regulars left due to management. Will videoing Mitch and ousting him, Lola leaving and makes it no secret why. Mel leaving and made no secret as to why. and as we both know the list goes on............... As far as the nights they are all what Ron built minus the Zodia crap. What, are you people doing??? This was an article about a bar closing to make room for Social Housing and hopefully relocating. It is NOT an op-ed piece on bar managers, an editorial on substance abuse, hidden cameras or a drag Queens. In a day and age when Gay bashings are at an all time high, when funding for our charities is being cut and when our youth are turning to prostitution in record numbers THIS is the discourse?? Anonymous hate and slander??? Generalization and poor grammer?? Come on ladies and gents!!! For the record, the Odyssey has enjoyed some of its greatest financial success in the last several years, and is only closing because of the housing project. Further, The odysseys commitment to charities is at an al time high and EVERYONE other than staff is ID'd at the bar. Please, by all means say what you have to, but don't insult the rest of us by hijacking the comment centre of a story about a venue closing to engage in chrachter assasination. I appreciate that a lot of you are regulars there and that you feel you really know whats going on but honestly unless you are an employee you have no idea (just like we would never know what it is truly like to experience things at your place of employment). I think as the manager position at the O there is always people who are going to like them and hate them. Will and Ron have both had their faults over the years as we all do. But honestly some of you are commenting about Ron's fantastic work but as an employee he was terrible to work for most of the time. Agitated, yelling at us in front of customers. Dont get me wrong Ron is a great guy (now that he is sober) but overall he made life for the employees there a nightmare a lot of the time. As for Will, yes he filmed Mitch on camera to get him fired but it still comes down to the fact that Mitch was doing something he shouldn't be doing especially at work. As customers you guys have no idea how difficult that job is. As a door staff there, it is apparent to us that so many of you don't get the fact that there are actually rules there that we have to follow. Stigmatizing an Already Stigmatized Population
Well, look at the how far the some members of Gay Community have come. I believe the objective of the article was to inform the readers of another Gay Venue closing, although it may only be temporary if Michael Levy and Bill Belland are able secure another location. Those being said still a huge loss and a piece of history in the Davie Village lost. Many of us have had good & bad times and have plenty of memories over the past 20+ years at the Odyssey; we may have not always agreed or were happy with some of the changes, however we voiced our opinion to the management and owners faces. For those of you who wish to comment on past staff; their personal issues and why they are no longer working at the "O" get the story correct before you try and slander them as there is legal recourse. As for the comments on the Entertainers at the "O", if you are unhappy with their performances; you can always leave, no one has glued your ass to the chair, using this venue to mock and criticize them is very unbecoming and childish. Obviously, you do not have the balls to say it to their faces as you hide behind generic names or initials. As for the personal attacks on Will McGuire, really, if you have or had a problem with his management style you could have complained. The owners Billy & Michael are very accessible and it is common knowledge who the owners are; it took me 5 minutes to Google them and get home addresses and phone numbers or perhaps you could have written a letter and mailed it to 1251 Howe Street addressed to them. However, that may have been too much work and it is easier to have a "Bitch Fest" about how much better you could have managed a successful business that I am sure most have no idea the amount of work and dedication it takes to complete the job. No doubt that the Odyssey's success is in part to many of the previous managers, including Ron Van Streun; but let us not forget the backbon

but let us not forget the backbone of the club, the DJ that made the club the place to be, our beloved Jules Leclerc . The house DJ for almost 20 years and now his son DJ Drew carries on the mix of music, mayhem, and fun that we all have enjoyed over the years. As for running, the places into the ground… guess you have not been out lately. The club is still going strong and Will's marketing and promotions have all been successes. Do not get me wrong me and Will have had our differences; however have discussed them face to face and not on an inappropriate venue as many of you have chosen to do; grow be a man and speak to him don't hide behind your initials or common names. Being a patron of the "O" from the conception, I have seen many managers come and go some good and some bad. However, to attack someone as you have is just wrong, grow up, this is not elementary school out on the back playing field. It will be a sad day for the community, the charities that benefit from this venue and its ongoing commitment to the community when it closes. That also includes Mr McGuire's ongoing commitment to provide the space, help with advertising and committing extra staff for such events. To say he has not done much and the community would be glad to see him go…you may want to rethink that because there are many, individuals, charities, performers, past and present employees that would be upset if he did. So the door is open take your shot . . . because I have nothing to hide, however if you do comment have the balls to attach your name. Mike Dominelli domnle@shaw.ca

SAD, SAD, SAD
I will miss the Odyssey. I was employed there for a number of years, even when it was my second side job. I have watched people come and go throughout the years, and it saddens me that my former playground will not be there when I return for my next visit. To hear the things that are being said about Will makes me even more sad. But I notice that one person uses there real name, and one actually sends a very suspect comment about when he sees him on Saturday. Grow up people! You try running a nightclub, and trying to keep 1000 people with 1000 different personality's happy. Good luck with that. If there is one thing I don't miss working there, it's the mouthy guys that think they own the world running there mouths off at the door. Which no doubt are the people who are writing these slanderous remarks. In order to get respect you have to give it. Joan-E wasn't even mentioned in the article, yet there's some guy calling her "tired". But I'm sure you'll go to her show on Sunday and marvel in her entertainment.

All good things must end and so does this location of the Odyssey. I shall cherish practicing my skills at videotaping the fundraising events and Shower Powers almost 2 decades ago. Many of those starring in those events have gone to a better place. I have nothing but praise for Michael Levy,Billy Belland,Arthur,Doug and Ron for letting me be a part of it and create those in house video clips shown over and over. My opinion on this completely irrelevant "will bashing free-for-all" that some arrogant prick decided to start. The only people hating are clearly people who have either been banned from The Odyssey or 'grew out' of the scene over the past few years. You obviously weren't meant for this place, so move on like the rest of us and get over a stupid drunken night you couldn't handle yourself. To all of my favorite drag queens, keep them shows coming! To the Current Management and Staff, Good luck and have faith, something always comes through. There will be an Odyssey 2.0, I hope to see you all in the near future. Ciao.xo ;D

Isn't it ironic that on this page so many people are bashing people in one of our bars while another main story on the Vancouver Xtra page is about someone bashing someone in one of our bars. How can we expect any of this to change when we engage it it so freely in one form or another?

Destined to rise again
For more years than I can remember I have been going to the Odyssey nightclub and for as many years as I can remember I have been treated respectfully, with much love and enjoyed great times with the staff of the ODYSSEY nightclub. Some of the best bar staff in the City have worked, and do work within it's walls, many of which I am proud to call good friends and chosen family. September 5th will be a great loss to many people in our community but the Odyssey is destined to rise again!

No big deal and no big loss
It's unfortunate we are losing another gay venue but this one isn't going to leave many of us crying in our beer. The place changed for the worse and became more and more irrelevant in the community. The space is better off as social housing. I've only ever heard negative comments about the management. If the bar reopens it should have a total change of staff. From the previous comments here it seems the place did successfully prop up the egos of some drag queens. They will be among the few in mourning. In six months none of us will even remember the place even existed.

Yet another drag queen who has to resort to personal attacks to make his point, although it is tough to see what Sandy's is. What does this have to do with Pumpjack? I don't go there. I only said that the vast majority of us don't care at all about Odyssey closing. It is irrelevant to us and the bar has made no effort to expand its client base. Well, this has been for some very interesting reading. I myself was an employee at the Odyssey for 6 years in total. Although at times under Ron managing people could get very frustrated but they always knew they could sit down and talk to him about whatever they needed to. He had his flaws but he was and still is the creative behind the Odyssey. Nothing much has changed as far as what the Odyssey is entertainment wise from what I am told. (have not been personally for years) I am not going to sit here and bash Will like some others. Will knows what I think of him and I know what he thinks of me. I personally over the last year heard many negative things about how people have been treated at the O from staff to patrons and it is sad. But hey it's just a bar. I wish my some people at the O all the best in their future endeavors and the others....

I'll take a Swipe Joan.
I've been going to the Odyssey since the days you could buy a Molson Dry and a shot of Sambucca, pay with a fiver and still have a buck to drop in Robin or Scottie's tip jar. All to say I've had my fair share of fun at the O spanning three decades. Everyone is entitled to their Opinion. I seem to recall the vitriolic comments that were made on this website last year declaring the O to be a Twink bar and the old geezers like me should go away. Topped off by Joan-E commenting on another blog that anyone who didn't support the move to Denman doesn't deserve a seat in ANY of the gay bars and should stay home. So I did stay home from the O, as did many of my friends because we all found that a deeply offensive and unwarranted attack on the community. We have also steered clear of Gay Bingo, Cruisy-T's and any other venue where we'll have to listen to that boozy old gas-bag. So get off your high horse Robert about people attacking considering you have never apologized in any print I've seen for your own nasty attack on the community. As for Will? I have nothing personal against him but when he was a doorman I witnessed him on a number of occasions making faces behind peoples back as they enter or leave the club, or laugh and make jokes about them after they have left with the coat check staff, or other doormen. Certainly not the most mature thing to do but a mark of his true character and how he really feels about some of the patrons. It was fun while it lasted, and perhaps it had a profound influence on the lives of some but we survived the closing of the Gandy, Shaggy Horse, Graceland, Love Affair (yes it was gay once), Neighbours and many other clubs. Consider a chapter in Vancouver history closed.

Hey Scott!
In the spirit of Pride I offer the following: If I have made you, or your friends feel uncomfortable, unwanted or bad in any way then I am very sorry. During the "Denman" debate I srongly felt that some gay men were using the "not in my backyard" argument, protecting their precious West of Denman Condos while perfectly happy to party the night away right across the street from a Jewish Seniors home. Further, my anger was fuelled by STRONG elements of homophobia coming from SOME of the Denman camp.(Have they said word one against "Conviction Kitchen"? No!) That said, please know that my wish is to offer you peace, and to welcome you to come sit and enjoy a buca and a Molson with this "Boozey old wind bag" any time you like (if you can stand the company). Do me one favour though, don't let your dislike of me or my actions ever stop you from supporting charity events like Bingo or Cruisy T. Those events benefit people who face challenges that , god willing, you and I should never face. I'm just not that important, but the events are. Now, to the rest of you! I respectfully request that maybe we could now put an end the personal comments about Will. Or, at the very least take this week off?? You have made your point! And , as an added bonus, you get the great satisfaction of knowing that he, I, and many others, including the great Queens on here, have lost something very important to us AND our jobs (for now). So maybe that might be enough for you, right? I really do wish each and every one of you the safest, most fun and greatest Pride you have ever had!! Clarification of your Points Scott E.
Scott - Possibly 1 too many Sambuccas before writing your post? You claim to feel unwelcome at the Odyssey because of your age, yet your comments to Joan were that she was a (and I quote) "boozy old gas bag" (note the use of the word old). Secondly you've taken a swipe at the character of Will by claiming he made fun of patrons, while you take personal swipes at Joan by calling her names??? I think you've lost credence to any points you may have made by your choice of commentary. To many, Joan is the Odyssey...she's worked and performed at the Odyssey for over 16 years now, and many of us are lucky enough to call her a friend. That being said, I'll be performing with the "gassy old booze bag" (as I prefer to call her) at the Odyssey Pride show as we work, and sweat our butts off to present what will be the most memorable Feather Boa Pride show EVER! Just Cannot Believe It...
I remember the first time I went to the O...was about 3 years ago...Growing up in a small northern town then all of a sudden going to a "Gay" Bar...I was so nervous...anxious...excited...overwhelmed and just happy to be in a place where I didn't have to worry about someone calling me a faggot or being spat on...I was in a place where others like me and my friends could laugh, drink, dance and just have fun...I do not know who Scotty is however I think that just like Will he did a bang up job...The first time I ever met will was when the dumpster was smoking and we got him to put it out, he was quite polite, happy, chatted with us a bit then offered us a drink on the house for not letting his club burn down...Will has been involved in MANY charity events...I have seen him around town and as a "regular" we yell naughty things at him and he gives us a polite nodd and does his job...I sincerely hope that the O moves to another location to add to another chapter of Vancouver Queer history! I would be delighted to frequent yet another Odyssey...as for Joan-E, she can drag the drag as far as it will go! I have seen her perform many times and appreciate ALL the work she does for charities all over the city!...Can we just remember that unless we are all united we are all enemies...Lets focus on the real issues...like young people turning to prostitution...and be greatful that we have such a housing development going up in the west end...Listen for the echo's of nights gone by once the O is demolished...I know i'll always remember that first night! and I hope yours brings you a big smile too! Happy Pride Vancouver! I hope it is safe! and full of enjoyment!

I think this job is a difficult one for anyone-- dealing with people sometimes at their best, having great times, laughing, loving, and living, and at others with plain drunks-- it's not always easy. Give the man a break. The Odyssey had many regulars and everyone expected VIP treatment -- I know I did! lol ;-) and I have to say for almost 7 years I had it. I think bars like this have to monitor these kinds of things because it can upset people, but also people have to monitor themselves and have a greater deal of sensitivity to people doing a difficult job. Be kind always, patient, and no matter what always learn and don't look back-- it's what matters. I miss everyone there so much-- much love. (and online bullying is not nice!)

Dear Scott E
My, my, my! How terribly sad that a person of your stated maturity would resort to this type of attack, especially at a time of queer celebration. I take great exception to your comments about my friend Robert, AKA Joan-E. She is NOT old. Boozy? Yes. Gassy? Just spend an evening with us on movie night when the theme is "Cheeses of the World"! But old? No Scott, I'M old, 53 to be exact and, although I swore never to grace the pages of this blog again, I feel compelled to ask how many free man hours you spend per week doing good works for your community. I am often lauded publicly for my history of philanthropy in our community, but my contribution does not hold a candle to the tireless, charitable efforts of Robert Kaiser and his 'love 'er or hate 'er' character of Joan-E. I don't always agree with his opinions, but I've never known someone so willing to have honest and civilized debate. If we strongly disagree, she just lets out a massive cheese fart and banishes me from the room. It's nasty, but not as disappointing as this tired, highschool discourse you have chosen to fuel. Happy Pride dearest. And ... for the record, this old queeen has recieved nothing but kind attention from Will and all his staff.

gratitude versus negativity
let's try to stick to the facts and not participate in character assassination, regardless of the person. In 2003, Robert Kaiser (Joan-E) was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his volunteer and fund raising efforts, [7 years ago!] particularly in support of people with HIV and AIDS, becoming the first drag queen to receive this honour. I, for one, am extremely proud and grateful to have this (B.O.W.B.)in our community and set the standard for excellence in service work. i believe we can choose to rise above name calling and hurtful criticism (bullying) or we can pick each other apart and be alone. so what do you choose? the lonely lower path of judgment or to be as one, with strength and unity, and accept our individual flaws, knowing you are really only seeing an aspect of yourself in an other, and that you feel so much shame, your only avenue is to deflect your hurt into anger against others. our community has so many opponents in this world to equal rights, safety and acceptance, can we not see past our differences to a greater vision of acceptance, knowing we are only as strong as our weakest link?

gay bashed by gay bashers tsk tsk typical
I remember the place when it was Heaven before it was the O. Thats when fun still existed in this town. Now it seems everyone is yearning for reality tv fame but have nothing to bring to the table. The O was a lot of fun, it was what one expected for Vancouver and for those of you that are patrons to these places, this Pride really thank everyone keeping the party going. The work involved for your show, to try and keep a fickle fag city like Vancouver happy is insane, and many of you expect it for free. So many are big dreamers in this town, with little outside of the bubble experience other than what you've seen on tv, its like you all came straight from Alberta or something? Wait, sorry, that might be true. eeek! he he So tip these workers well, thank the management at all gay venues for the amount of work going into what should make you proud at Pride. And remember, we are all more than what nightclubs we appear at, we should be strong people that make up a strong community. Take it down a notch and take a good look at your surroundings, because its a reflection of you. Thank you O for letting us be us, whatever that might be.

A few things.....
I have not lived in Vancouver in more than 10 years but I always had a great time and was thoroughly entertained by the staff, entertiners , patrons and management of the Odyssey alike. Though I am clearly not a regular as I live on the other side of the country, I see this as an end of an era and it is a sad time for so many who have had the pleasure of being entertained and enjoyed ALL that the Odyssey has delivered to the LGBT community. On another note, I certainly want to echo DeDe Drew's comments with regards to Robert, AKA Joan-E. I have had passionate disagreements with Robert in the past but Robert has a class that expemplifies remarkable character as he repectfully diagreed with me. I know nobody who has as much strength in character, courage, voice, reason, talent, devotion and passion as Robert. My 3rd point, I think that someone should make T-shirts with "I Love boozy old gas-bags" on them and sell them for charity. I think that they would sell like hot-cakes and I would be at the front of the line to buy 10. .....and for my final point, Happy Pride Vancouver! I hope that you ALL live, love and laugh more than ever this weekend. Life is way too short! Rick Johnston

Thank you Odyssey
Has it really been 25 years since the Odyssey opened? I attended the opening night party, and remember that even on that first night there was speculation on its demise -- how could it possibly last a year welcoming both gay and straights? But it was an instant hit and became second home for two generations of Vancouver’s younger gay crowd. I went regularly when I fit in that niche, and never stopped going entirely - lured occasionally by a feather boa! I never knew any of the managers or any of the inside politics - never wanted to – I just went to the Odyssey to have fun. It rarely disappointed! Thank you to those behind the scenes, whoever you are, for working hard to make that happen for our community. And best wishes for another 25 years in a new location.

Hey Joan
Thank you Joan, while long overdue, I do appreciate and accept your apology. For the record, anyone with their panties in a wad, while I'd like to take credit for the eloquence of "boozy old gas bag" that is a term I learned from Joan-E herself. She's used that and many other ribald phrases to describe her personae over the years. So Robyn, the two of you will have to duke it out over cabbage rolls at 20 paces. I know a few Bubba's that can hook you up, old school. Also for the record, I've had the utmost respect for Joan over the years, and her fundraising contributions. I was there a dozen years ago cheering her on weekly as she lost weight and recounted it during her show which was a very courageous thing. Regardless, bad behavior is bad behavior. You cannot tell people to stop throwing mud when you've got two handfuls yourself. Joan's fundraising activities are not carte blanche to speak without consequence. I called her out on it, that's it, she apologized, me and Joan have moved on the rest of you should do the same. DeDe, my condolences to your sinuses, while I may not attend the events mentioned I still contribute through other avenues. Over the past two decades I've donated my time and money to Friends for Life, Chefs for Life, Art for Life, Diamond Centre, Dr Peter Centre, Lovin Spoonful, McLaren House, Casey House, Covenant House, Queer Film Festival, Gay Archives, Paws With Cause, VPS, The 519, Egale, Little Sister's, Big Brothers, AIDS Walk, AIDS Vancouver, SPCA, MCC, HRC, GMHC, Camp Moomba, United Way to name a few.

The larger picture
I am surprised at some of the nasty and distasteful comments on here. Why are we taking part in personal attacks and disparaging remarks? How on earth as a community are we going to come together as unified group to combat the ongoing violence towards our community? When we continually attack people maliciously within our group, we collectively become hypocrites. We can't preach about stopping hate and at the same time spew hatred and ignorance on an open forum for every one to read. Unfortunately, we are still a group of people that are oppressed worldwide, we all have to put aside our personal vendettas and refocus that negative energy into something positive. This is PRIDE week, there is a meaning to it. We have a parade every year to remind the world that we are here and we are not going to hide or remain in the closet. We are unified and we are many, we are young, we are old and we are here to stay. The day we no longer need a parade will be a day when we are truly accepted. The day we can walk down ANY street holding hands is a day I look forward to. I hope everyone takes a moment this pride and realizes the sacrifice that many before us had to make in order for us to live in relative safety. The fight is not over, we are still facing huge resistance. My point to this entire rant, is to hopefully remind others of the fight we need to focus on. Happy pride

Clarification for Confused!
Confused, this article is about the closing of the Odyssey, and not an attack on the perfomers who frequent their stage. However since you are indeed quite confused, let me clear a few things up for you! 1. Robyn Graves is a performer at the Odyssey nightclub. She was Ms. Odyssey 1, and some people may even remember her as Empress 37 of Vancouver. She has frequented the Odyssey since the days when she still had hair! 2. Summer Clearance would NEVER been seen eating ice cream in public, for fear of what the likes of you might say! I may be a larger queen, but large in moral values and most certainly large in character. Your verbal attack has caused me to put down my half-eaten fudgsicle in disgust! I can only take solace in the fact that you at least knew who and what I was, as opposed to Mz. Graves, who is still home choking back her anger and resentment, from the privacy of her bathroom.

Scott is BUSY. Not too busy to anonymously slag people with the balls (tucked, natch) to step forward, grab a microphone and raise money for GLBT charities... but busy nonetheless.

ODYSSEY
I was in the Odyssey a few months ago and the place smells like mold. It's a total dump and the wrecking ball cannot get there fast enough! Over the years with toilets backing and shit stuck to your shoes who wants to go in the place. There are much better place in the city to go shake. I wonder if they need a wrecking ball operator? I may be available on Sept 5th

re: Gary
There are people putting on heels and grabbing a microphone, and there are people opening their wallets to actually come up with the cash and contribute generously. People like Scott and me are the latter thank you very much. It's not like these Queens are shaking the dough out of their own purses or scooping up the change from between their sofa cushions along with a few long lost Cheetos. Robyn dearest, your lip-synch is fine when you've invested more time than just the cab ride over to listen to your material. I've always wanted to ask though, just how do you get your eyes to focus in different directions? Is it a Funny Girl thing?

Hi Matt!!! Im certain i don't know who you are, so how could you possibly know me well enough to comment on my financial situation and my charitable contributions..unlike yourself and Scott, i don't need to lay it all out online in this comment thread about all the societies and organizations that I donate to.. I think it's great there are people like yourselves out there that give to these well intentioned most necessary outfits.. keep up the great work.. but don't think for a second that all I do is throw on a pair of heels and grab a microphone..There are many times that that is the last thing I want to do but I do it because the end result is money raised... now if you don't mind I'm going to get back to crying on my sofa and looking for change for my cab ride tonight... oh and btw it's Doritos not Cheetos.. don't get it twisted..

Don't be slaggin on the performers please
Anyone who doesn't realize the effort AND talent that goes into a drag performance should stay home! I applaud these girls with a standing ovation. I've wished many times I had the balls AND creativity to do this. I know I could probably put on a half-assed job with the help of some Ativan; stage fright would probably kill me. Happy PRIDE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow!
I would like to clarify that Will McGuire was not the reason for my quitting @ the O. Furthermore, I will always remember my 13 years of employment there as some of the funnest and heart felt moments of my life...so much history, so many stories, so many tears & belly laughs. Yes it's high time for the wrecking ball to hit the dump to make way for a much needed project in the community, but i miss and will continue to miss so many things about that place including the staff & customers, many of whom have become chosen family. So let's just celebrate all those years of memories people and quit yer bitchin'.

Re: Jamie Lee Scamilton
Yes, she's keeping quiet after declaring on her blog the O should be closed down. Then again she'll claim her low brand prostitution centre called Queen's Cross (how dare she lower the level of a Queen!) is busy since its Pride weekend. That girl should've had the balls to go right through with the operation instead of spending it on an old Chevy and Bingo. Not shit, thats true people. Ah, no one is proud its all about making a buck. Scamilton in Scamcouver.

Toothless Pimps Shouldn't Engage in Welfare Fraud
Jamie Lee Hamilton may choose to hide behind her posts on facebook, slagging off the many hard working girls that raise money for charity, while she lives off the earnings of drug addicted transexual prostitutes at her brothel Queens Cross. No one lines up to see the Odyssey girls in a show? That's a crock...check out the line to see a Sunday show Jim, you'd be surprised how many have come out for over 15 years now! Certainly more than show up to smell the odours of the queens cross! Jamie Lee can talk about the "exiled" girls from the O all she wants, but she's still left there with all her many chins, fleshy hairy tummy and ball-less scrotum, exiled from the gay community to the lower east side, to wallow in the trough she has laid out for himself. As a side note, Welfare Fraud can be reported to 604-822-6375 or to the Welfare Fraud hotline at 1-800-453-3860, ext. 2-7887. JL Scamilton - Just because the Gay Community banished you YEARS AGO doesnt mean you need to take a poke at the hardworking fundraisers in our community! What did you last donate funds to, other than to feed your own face or ego? Dirty gets whatever Dirty deserves. Toothless pimps shouldnt sling mud when their troughs are lined with it!

I find it very funny that certain people on here are trashing people when they complain that others are trashing Will. Will is a dirty bag and a snake. No other way to say it. I tried to think of a nicer way to write it but it was just not possible. The Odyssey, although fun is a dump and I am sure one big health code violation. Ciao to the O and F&@k you Mr. McGuire.

JLH really = Jabba the Hut
If you listen closely to Jaimie Lee Hamilton's laughter you will be astounded to hear that it resembles the hackle of jabba the hutt before Princess Leia took a length of her chains and choked that mother fucking bitch in the opening scence of Return of the Jedi... I'd say, Let's pick up that FAT JABBA, (JLH) in a back hoe, dump her mother fuckin PHAT ASS in the basement of the O and blow the place to kingdom cum. But with our luck some one saved a piece of her (JLH's) hair and she'll be back a thousand years from now anyway. Screenplay! "But its the thought that counts dear!"

Thanks for the Mammaries...
Firstly, I would like to say I have always been treated with respect at the Odyssey...I am 51, and my club years are definately behind me, but I will always have fond memories of the Odyssey...As a younger man living out in the sticks, the Odyssey was a refuge for me....where I could have a laugh with the outrageous drag shows, a dance if the mood struck me, or just hang and look at the lovely eye candy....I will never forget Justine Tyme's brilliant "I'm every woman" or her terrific send up of Julie Andrews pantiless...It was always fun to take straight friends because I always knew that they would be entertained...To Joan-E, Willie, Carlotta-Gurl, and the late great Diana Rose...thanks for the mammaries....

About Face
I have just read the letter to the editor on behalf of those that feel they have standing in the community. I do agree with a portion of what they had to say in their letter but I also find that if any individual is going to put themselves out there, they have to accept the good with the bad. Are they angels? Probably not. Over the past year it appears there have been quite a few comments made about these members of the community on this website. People could have a nail to grind for whatever reason (disgruntled employee), yet I do believe though there must be a grain of truth to what some have stated. Can so many people with the same type of comments be wrong? That or one individual sure has time on their hands. I've met a good portion of these people that signed this letter to the editor and in my own personal comment I would have to say that some of them can check their ego's a bit. I have found some of them demanding, with little business sense, and its usually because of their own agenda and then they wonder why things don't fall into place their way or are in general supported. I think if some of them are chasing a form of fame, they should really consider what it is bringing in their lives. Is it fulfilling or are they just another bar star for a year or two? Is it going to matter in the long run? Is it paying their bills now? I read the letter to the editor a couple of times. My first thoughts were, its written well. My second thought was...ego. Will this letter to the editor change what I think or know of these people? Probably not. It must be very hard to run a gay business, everyone will think they have the answers because they've all gone to the same types of places. Sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too. Make a choice. Be a good individual. Consider others.

You will be missed!
I came to Vancouver from a small town, and to me the Odyssey was like my community centre - I agree with JMS, that it was like a sanctuary. I met many of my future boyfriends there, and I'd always run into old friends on a weekly basis. I don't feel that same sense of community right now at the other bars, and I hope that I wasn't just lucky to have come out in an era when this was possible. I'll be sad to see that building torn down, and I hope that the 'newbies' coming out today will be able to find their version of a gay "Cheers" like I was able to. Thank you for the laughs, the tears, the hot guys! Thanks Odyssey!

29 thoughtful readers don't speak for thousands
Thank You to XTRA for the freedom to express one's thoughts & opinions - even if there's a LIST of 29 that don't like free speech unless it benefits them. I agree that some of the comments are a little or the top, but certainly not slanderous. When you decide to be a so-called public figure ie: a drag queen or a manager of a major club, you have to expect that sometimes things will be said about you that might upset you. Suck it up or stay at home. It's part of the job description I'm afraid.

Put it this way Xtra...
Xtra has a responsibility to moderate. If they choose not to, its the same as the average citizen having a KKK meeting in their back yard. They can shut the curtains, hoping that everyone is abiding by the law, but when a complaint comes in, or illegal activity takes place, guess who the police arrest? Do they buy the "well it was on my property, however I had nothing to do with it, I tell people to play by the rules, and it's up to them to do so" The police would still hold the homeowner responsible right? I don't buy Xtra's lack of responsibility in moderating their own forums/message boards.

Thousands?
JKT, where do you get this notion that its ok to slander people? That its part of their job description because of the field of work they are in? Its people like you who will not face the person they seem to have a problem with, but would rather spew anonymous comments and use random initials as a signature. Way to take a stand. Post your real name. Then we can dive into your history.

Slander ?
I've read and re-read ALL the posted comments on this page and not one of them would win a court case for slander. Even the drag queen to drag queen comments, as brutal as they may seem, aren't slanderous. I'm with JKT, in thanking Xtra for not censoring comments like some other 'straight' leaning sites do. Dave, if they can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen honey ! FREEDOM TO SPEAK - FREEDOM OF THE PRESS - FREEDOM OF THE INTERNET. If you want expression & free speach suppressed so badly, move to China or Cuba. P.S. I do also agree that some of the comments have little or no taste, BUT slanderous ? NOPE.
