Pinkwashing and Israel
FEATURE / Apartheid, gay rights and military occupation in the Middle East

Men walk down the street hand in hand. Two women share a tender moment, kissing and caressing each other’s faces. Pride flags fill the air. Some include the Star of David, blending the symbols of the LGBT community and Israel into one.

It’s the annual gay pride parade and it’s the face of Tel Aviv that both the municipality and the state are actively marketing. The campaign aims to brand Israel as a gay-friendly destination, depicting the country as a liberal, open, democratic place where members of the LGBT community have freedoms that they don’t have in the broader Middle East.

Amnon Liberman, media advisor to the minister of tourism, adds that Tel Aviv is fast becoming a “gay hotspot” because it’s got “the great vibe of a modern city, a lovely beach and friendly locals.”

Critics call this “pinkwashing.” They say that Israel cynically exploits its relatively decent record of gay rights to divert attention from its military occupation and settlement of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, its blockade of the Gaza Strip, and the widespread discrimination Palestinian citizens of the state face on a daily basis.

“It’s built on a very colonial logic in a sense that pinkwashing is not only saying that Israel is a progressive country, it’s saying, by definition, that Palestinian society is a barbaric, homophobic society,” says Haneen Maikey, the director and a co-founder of the non-governmental organization Al-Qaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society. Al-Qaws does not participate in the annual Pride parade in Tel Aviv.

While Al Qaws stays away because it does not want to contribute to pinkwashing, elsewhere other gay groups have been pushed out of Pride events because they object to Israeli policies. In 2011, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) withdrew from the Toronto Pride parade after some city councillors threatened to withhold funds because they believe the words “Israeli apartheid” are hate speech.

But, internationally and within Israel, the use of the word apartheid to describe Israel’s policies toward Palestinians is gaining currency. And, as the debate in Toronto shows, it is becoming increasingly contentious.

Jeff Halper is the founder and director of the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions, an organization that fights Israel’s destruction of Palestinian houses in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. In East Jerusalem, Israel rejects a tremendous majority of Palestinian requests to build or expand, effectively forcing Palestinians to build “illegally.” The municipality then slaps the owners with steep fines and, if the owners cannot pay, demolishes the home or the addition.

In Israeli-controlled areas of the West Bank, Israeli forces sometimes destroy structures that predate the occupation itself, claiming the owners built them without Israeli permits. Jewish settlements in the same areas, however, continue to grow.

Speaking to Xtra, Halper says, “Apartheid basically means two things: separation and domination.”

In Halper’s opinion, apartheid is taking place in both the Occupied Territories and inside Israel. “[It] is a system that influences the entire country,” he says.

But his criticism isn’t limited to the Israeli government. He points out that the Israeli LGBT community is complicit in the state’s use of gay rights to deflect attention from the occupation.

“[One] of the problems with the gay and lesbian movement here [in Israel] is that they don’t use the ‘a word.’ They contribute, themselves, to pinkwashing because they are very apolitical. They stay away from anything controversial . . . They’re not our allies in working against the occupation.”

***

“[Pinkwashing] is built on a logic of dualities,” Maikey says, adding that Israeli assertions that it is the “only democracy in the Middle East” work on the “same rhythm.”

Israel’s status as a democracy has come under debate in recent years. In the summer of 2011, for example, the Israeli Knesset passed a law prohibiting citizens from openly supporting the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. And, under the Prawer Plan, Bedouin citizens of the state will be forcibly relocated from their homes and villages in the Negev desert to make way for 10 new Jewish towns.

“[Israel is] a Jewish state giving some privileges to some people,” Maikey says.

Similarly, while the LGBT community does enjoy relative freedom in Israel, those freedoms are extended to certain groups within the community and on certain terms.

Israel will recognize same-sex marriages performed overseas, and the state extends some benefits to same-sex partners. But there’s a limit to those rights — gay and lesbian couples cannot marry in Israel, even if both partners are Jewish.

Those who defend Israel’s policies regarding the LGBT community are quick to answer that heterosexual couples with one non-Jewish partner can’t marry in Israel either, pointing, unintentionally perhaps, to the fact that non-Jews face institutionalized discrimination in Israel.

Israelis call Tel Aviv habuah, the bubble. The nickname reflects a deep disconnect between the Mediterranean metropolis, where approximately 400,000 of the country’s eight million residents live, versus the rest of the state. Some liberals say that Israel is made up of two states — the state of Tel Aviv and the state of Israel.

This is where the state’s logic in promoting Tel Aviv and, thus, Israel as an open, liberal society falls apart. Let’s say Tel Aviv is a haven for homosexuals. That doesn’t say much about the rest of the country.

Israel’s largest city, Jerusalem, might be more indicative of the country’s attitudes. Israel considers Jerusalem its capital even though the international community doesn’t recognize it as such because Palestinian East Jerusalem is under Israeli occupation. Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem pay taxes to the Israeli authorities, but their neighbourhoods suffer from neglect, with the municipality forgoing basic services, such as garbage collection. Jewish majority West Jerusalem, on the other hand, gets a disproportionate amount of services and funds.

Some Palestinian neighbourhoods that are within Jerusalem municipal boundaries are separated from the rest of the city by a massive concrete wall. Residents, including children, are forced to go through checkpoints every day to reach their schools, jobs and lives on the other side.

And while the state heavily promotes Tel Aviv’s Pride parade, Jerusalem’s LGBT community finds itself struggling in what Elinor Sidi, the executive director of the grassroots organization Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance (JOH), calls “a hostile environment.”

Writing in +972 magazine, Sidi explains that Knesset members and government ministers have articulated “horrible homophobia.” She points to the 2008 remarks of MK Nissim Ze’ev as a particularly dramatic example.

During a Knesset discussion about putting a blanket ban on gay pride parades in Jerusalem, Ze’ev blamed homosexuals for the “self-destruction of Israeli society and the Jewish people.” He also likened homosexuality to a disease as “toxic as bird flu.”

Sidi points out that JOH provides much of its own security for Jerusalem’s Pride parade. The police officers who protected the parade did so only after JOH submitted a number of petitions to the Supreme Court.

“No less than 10 petitions were submitted in the last decade,” Sidi writes. “Petitions were not only submitted against the unwilling Jerusalem municipality, but also against the Israeli police and Minister of Interior. It was neither the Israeli government nor the Knesset who stood to our protection, but our determination and successful work in the Supreme Court. To this very day JOH is forced to provide ushers for Pride . . . in order to prevent Pride from being canceled.”
Bedouin children play on tires in Al-Arakib, a Bedouin village that has been demolished to make way for a Jewish development.
(Mya Guarnieri)

Homophobia is not confined to Jerusalem. Scratch the surface and you’ll find discrimination in Tel Aviv, as well. Renen Raz, a 23-year-old Jewish Israeli who defines himself as neither gay nor straight but queer — explaining that he strongly prefers men but is attracted, every once in a while, to women — tells Xtra that he has had difficulties finding an apartment in Tel Aviv because of his sexual orientation.

One landlord asked Raz outright if he had a girlfriend. When Raz asked the man why he wanted to know, the landlord admitted that he was only willing to rent the place out to Jewish heterosexuals who had done their mandatory army duty.

In recent months, the Hebrew media has reported on a number of landlords who refuse to rent or sell properties to homosexuals. While it is unclear just how widespread the phenomenon is, these incidents call into question the open, liberal image the Israeli government is attempting to project to the world.

Ahmed, a 29-year-old Palestinian citizen of Israel who spoke with Xtra on the condition of anonymity, as his family does not know about his sexual orientation, says, “There are ways that I feel free [in Tel Aviv], and there are ways that I don’t feel free.

“[In Tel Aviv], it’s no problem to say I’m gay. On the other hand, I’m an Arab who lives in Israel,” he says.

Palestinian citizens of the state face a wide variety of discrimination. Their schools get far less funding than those of their Jewish counterparts. Certain state benefits are extended only to those who serve in the army, and most Arabs do not serve. Some university programs require applicants to be in their early 20s. And, as Jewish Israelis go to the military after high school, human rights organizations say that these age requirements are intended to give preference to Jews and to push Arabs to study elsewhere.

Ahmed has faced humiliating interrogations at the airport, despite the fact that he holds an Israeli passport. He also says that it was “very hard” to find an apartment in Tel Aviv.

“There are people who won’t rent to Arabs,” he says, adding that because the city has a reputation for being open and liberal, the racism he has experienced here has hit him that much harder.

***

Pinkwashing is just one strategy in a broader marketing campaign intended to influence public opinion about Israel.

In 2005, The Jewish Daily Forward reported that officials from a number of ministries, including the prime minister’s office, were working on “a new plan to improve the country’s image abroad — by downplaying religion and avoiding any discussion of the conflict with the Palestinians.”

Brand Israel, which emphasizes trade and tourism, was launched in 2006. And tourism is big business here. In 2011, approximately 3.4 million foreigners visited Israel, bringing $7 billion (US) to the country. While tourism comprises just four percent of the Israeli gross domestic product, the industry grew seven percent from 2010 to 2011. So it’s an important sector that, through the ripple effect, makes a strong impact on the economy.

Although gay tourists are a relatively small group, they are known to spend more money than their heterosexual counterparts.

Word of mouth plays a big role in all of this. Not only does it influence public opinion about Israel, it also brings more tourists — essentially turning visitors into foot soldiers in Israel’s image war.

Both the Israeli government and the Tel Aviv municipality have invested millions of dollars in marketing the city as a gay hotspot. And those efforts appear to have paid off. Earlier this year, gaycities.com and American Airlines named Tel Aviv the world’s top gay travel destination. According to Liberman, the 2011 Pride parade brought some 5,000 foreigners to Tel Aviv; this year’s event drew about 20,000 non-Israeli tourists.

“The Tel Aviv municipality did a very good job of creating a welcoming atmosphere for gay people — pride flags were up [around the city] for two to three weeks,” Liberman says.

So while gay foreigners are welcome to visit Tel Aviv and lend a hand in Israel’s public-image campaign — that is, if they don’t want to rent an apartment — there is one group of queer tourists conspicuously absent: Palestinians from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Due to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been decried by human rights groups as collective punishment and a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention, Gazans often lack access to medical care and educational opportunities — never mind the annual Pride parade. On the other side of the separation barrier, West Bankers live inside a labyrinth of Israeli military checkpoints and Israeli-issued permits that make a trip to Tel Aviv impossible for most.

West Bankers with contacts in the Palestinian Authority, which works closely with Israel, can get in, as can some Palestinians who are employed by international organizations.  Mohamed is a gay man who lives in Ramallah. He is one of the privileged few to receive the occasional permit to travel to Tel Aviv.

“It’s an oasis. Of course it’s an oasis,” he says.

But he resents “the way [Tel Aviv] is used [to say], ‘Look at the gay people — we enforce laws and regulations that protect gay people and you can be out in the military.’ At the same time, there is a wall, and behind that wall, there is a different world and people are suffering.”

Xtra’s non-disclosure and Mya Guarnieri
In keeping with its low level of journalistic standards and its ongoing support for QuAIA, Xtra failed to disclose that the panel discussion on pinkwashing promoted at the end of the above article, is being sponsored by QuAIA itself. See http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2012/06/15/pinkwashing-how-governments-and-corporations-exploit-queers-to-justify-injustice-a-quaia-event-june-20-519-church-st/ Furthermore, the author of the above article, Mya Guarnieri, is a well-known Israel-basher. See http://cifwatch.com/2010/08/29/who-is-mya-guarnieri/ Aside from her Israel bashing, some of her other writing is strange. For example, according to the above link, she once wrote (quote) There was a whole year I couldn’t stop buying light bulbs… I stood staring at the light bulbs wondering what it would feel like to put one in my mouth and to slowly slowly apply more and more pressure just the right amount of pressure until it popped and shattered into my gums. I wondered how the shards would feel and how they would crunch if I chewed. It’s funny, I never thought about swallowing them, but I never thought about spitting them out either… I envisioned myself chewing light bulbs on a fairly regular basis. Don’t worry, I never did it, but I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. Maybe that’s just about right, for that time in my life. I was in my late twenties and just divorced… (end of quote). Will we see a light bulb chewing demonstration at the QuAIA pinkwashing event at the 519 on June 20?

Pickwashing is another anti Israel code word
This article never mentions the Arab intention to destroy Israel. In the 1948 war, the Arabs openly said that they would finish Hitlers job. And the Jews won. In 1967, the Arabs again said they would throw the Jews into the sea. The Jews won. The Jewish people in Israel represent an internal contradiction to the false Muslim claim to Jerusalem. If Hitler and the Arabs did wipe out all the Jews then the Muslims would say without any rebuke that there never was a Jewish historical claim to Israel. It is time for the Arab and Muslim world to truly show regret for all the lies, hate, theft and murder that they have done to the Jewish people. After all, there are 13 million Jews in the world and 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. The false term of pinkwashing is right out of the Nazi propoganda books.

Lowest Journalistic Standards Ever
This is a disturbing article adhering to the absolute lowest of journalistic standards. It shouldn't even be called "news". It's more like an opinion/editorial piece masked as the delivery of "facts". What we have here is pure unadulterated and hateful propaganda against Israel that completely undermines the journalistic integrity of Xtra. This "journalist" is clearly promoting her event. At the end of the article there is even an advertisement for a "discussion" on "pink washing". The very title of the event assumes the accuracy of the term! A country should be measured not on the occasional homophobic incident that occurs within its borders, but by the state/societal reaction to those crimes. Canada is considered one of the most gay-friendly places on the planet, yet we have homophobic incidents, such as the murder of Aaron Webster. Homophobia exists everywhere, including Israel, but Israel, unlike any other country in the region, protects its LGBT citizens completely. While the US was signing Don't Ask Don't Tell into law, Israel was allowing gays to openly serve in the military. Israel has one of the best records of human rights in the world, among homosexuals, women, blacks and, yes, religious minorities. This is disgustingly low journalistic standards! SHAME XTRA! SHAME! You have lost a dedicated reader.

Xtra! is too fucking stupid.
Xtra keep on forgetting the Hamas government and the Palestinian Authority are the elected government of the Palestinian People and if LGBTs in the West Bank or Gaza want to be equals, the Hamas government and the Palestinian Authority are the ones who have to do it. But of course Xtra is too fucking stupid to realize this and so is the QuAIA. Also if not the fault of the Hamas government and the Palestinian Authority then why not send the QuAIA to Gaza and protest there? Xtra stop 'Pinkwashing this issue, we all know you are the Paper of the QuAIA and not Canada's LGBTs

An alternative view on the real pinkwashers
Here's an alternative view on how groups like QuAIA are the real pinkwashers. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/scott-piro/israel-pinkwashing_b_1161852.html Here's a key passage from the article: Israel's queer foes are the real pinkwashers, because they conveniently ignore the horrors committed against LGBT people throughout the Middle East in order to focus only on the Jewish state. If the term pinkwashing is about covering up facts to push one's agenda, then anti-Israel queer activists are choking on their own hypocrisy and self-righteousness.

Again how Xtra is the QuAIA Paper
What Mya Guarnieri most nations would to the same in Israel's position and most nations have. The QuAIA lost creditably when they labeled Canada an Apartheid State. Also there was apart of the story on Anti Boycotting laws, Israel is not the only nation to even have them. France, United States and Australia do have them in place but if it is Israel they seem to think they are the only ones who have them. The problem with this Apartheid crap even I fail to see it. I'm a member of Baha'i Faith and I do travel a lot there and there isn't Apartheid anywhere in the country. If Xtra had Journalistic Standards (we all know you do not) Xtra would not be promoting the QuAIA or their cause. Xtra stop pinkwashing, we all know you are.

Telling the truth is not pinkwashing
From the article: "pinkwashing is not only saying that Israel is a progressive country it’s saying, by definition, that Palestinian society is a barbaric, homophobic society,” says Haneen Maikey..... That's not pinkwashing, that's the truth!! Palestine and any country ruled by Muslims and Sharia laws are barbaric, homophobic, mysognist, anti-freedom societies. Why the confusion??? Why don't Muslims start reflecting inward as to why the societies contrast so sharply.

More filth from the Knesset
M.K. Rabbi Nissim Zeev, currently serving his fourth term as Knesset Member in the 18th Knesset, had this to say on how homosexuals in Israel should be rehabilitated, like drug addicts: "The government should initiate this; these people are unfortunate and we must keep an eye on them to assist them... I am not speaking of a closed institution, but of a center that will accept anyone who walks through its doors... We must set up special teams of psychologists, psychiatrists and social workers who will help them return to a normal life, just like in a drug rehabilitation center." Sounds lovely.

Bait and Switch Article
It's amazing how Xtra manages to use Israel's amazing gay rights record against Israel, essentially just using the fact that Israel is one of the best places in the world to be Queer as an excuse to start an article and then slip into a long diatribe about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Even more so - where are the articles about the abuses against LGBTQ people in other middle east countries. We get it Xtra - your hatred of Israel has gone so far that even when Israel does something right, that's licence to write a diatribe against the Jewish state, while continuing to ignore the larger picture and throwing any sense of balance or journalistic integrity out the window.

It appears that the author of this article has made a number of good arguments and the comments have tried to bash her, claimed antisemitism, etc, but have not argued that she is wrong. What leads me to think that all her arguments are right and that a very vocal, fanatical, pro-Israel group, that includes a homophobe like Meir Weinstein who brought a bunch of bullies into our pride, is simply screaming! This probably won't mollify anyone, but I remember Xtra writing pro-Israel pieces in the past (eg http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/Exploring_Israel-8316.aspx) "Pinkwashing" is a complicated and fraught concept, but surely Xtra's readers are smart enough to read about it, grapple with it, and accept or reject it on its merits without slinging shit at each other.

Comparisons
'Oh my gawd' - Israel portrays itself as a modern, 'Western'-style democracy; Iran doesn't. The whole point of 'pinkwashing' is based on this portrayal - advertising values we share, like queer rights, in order to counter discussions of the values we don't share, like illegal settlements, checkpoints, and limitations on citizenship. I don't think Iran gives a shit what Western liberals think of their regime. As a democracy that wants to be part of a world community, Israel probably should. I don't agree with QUAIA's approach, but there is no question they have more chance of influencing Israel's actions through protest than they would of influencing Iran's. It's precisely because people think Israel is fundamentally a 'good' and democratic country that they have hope it will change.

Just today...
The reality is that Israel is not perfect (no one here is claiming it is). It makes mistakes in foreign policy as well as domestic policy - but to assume that everything good about Israel is a nefarious scheme to hide the bad goes so far beyond bias it boarders on the delusional. Just today 28 missiles have been launched from Gaza towards Israeli citizens today by a regime which murders and oppresses gays and lesbians and promotes terrorism and radical religious extremism. Not a word from Xtra. Israel's right to exist has nothing to do with it's gay rights record. It's right to exist and defend itself against terrorism and existential threats is rooted in the rights of all people to self determination and it's ongoing desire to pursue peace. Is Israel perfect? No. But if Xtra wants to truly be a news source about this issue, then it should delve deeper than parroting propoganda (from either side).

It has been said, If you take weapons away from Israel, there would be no more Jews; if you take weapons away from the Arab world there would be World Peace... I find this article rather one sided and more about Palestine than about Gays in Isreal or the Middle East. Personally, as a homosexual I would not fear traveling to Isreal (regardless if they celebrated Pride or not). Although, I have heard that some Arab countries are safe for homosexuals to travel to (Tunisie for example) I am not tempted to go there because of the reputation they have towards homosexuals. QuAIA should spend more of their time and energy helping homosexuals in the Middle East than bashing Isreal! Believe me, "Pinkwashing" happens everywhere, just look to our American neighbours to the South and even Canada. Under the Harper Regime, Pinkwashing is fast becoming a possibility here too. I see that QuAIA’s Tim McCaskell has posted a comment above. McCaskell is a leader of both QuAIA and AIDS Action Now. So, it’s not surprising that AIDS Action Now co-sponsored a QuAIA event that was held on Thursday June 23, 2011 at 9:00 pm. See: http://queersagainstapartheid.org/2011/06/15/learning-tactics-and-strategies-with-act-up/ Yet, the annual AIDS Candlelight Vigil in Toronto was held at exactly the same time: Thursday June 23, 2011 at 9:00 pm. See: http://www.facebook.com/events/123366487745703/ It therefore appears that McCaskell’s AIDS Action Now thinks it’s more important to co-sponsor and attend a QuAIA event than the AIDS Vigil. The QuAIA event that competed with the AIDS Vigil on June 23, 2011 was also co-sponsored by the Canadian AIDS Treatment Information Exchange (CATIE), the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation and the Inside Out LGBT Film and Video Festival. I assume this was because CATIE and the PWA Foundation are greatly influenced by McCaskell (a fellow AIDS activist) and Inside Out is greatly influenced by QuAIA’s Elle Flanders (who use to be the executive director of Inside Out). It least we know the true priorities of these pro-QUAIA organizations in the LGBT community.

Loony Tim McCaskell
As if this sophistic article isn't dreadful enough, Tim McCaskell's comment is downright loony. Apparently criticism of this article is void because there are some angry letters from right wing "ethnic nationalists". Ha! It's funny but I feel bad for young, impressionable people who actually look up to Tim as a community leader.

You do not represent us, you political hacks
In the end, the real problem is that Xtra pretends to represent the gay community. If you want to be an extremist, anti-semitic rag, that's fine. But just don't do it under false pretences and in such a hypocritical way. 99% of the gay community despise QuAIA and support Israel. It's only about 200 vocal, emotionally disturbed extremists that are dragging us through this mess.

Israel is worth a visit
I'm not Jewish and have no connection to Israel. However, I have been to Israel. I loved Tel Aviv. The guys are really hot, and it's a fascinating country. A perfect holiday destination. ----------- The West Bank, Egypt, Jordan, etc. are also interesting places though. Go there too. However, don't expect open gay life. ------ Mya is reporting from Israel. I'm sure Elle and Tim have been to Israel. Perhaps even many times. The hypocrisy is breathtaking: they can go, but you can't. I'd like the members of QuAIA etc to say in public that they have, for political reasons, never been to Israel. They won't of course, because they have been.

Penis chopper
The Syrian government is chopping off the penises of 13 year old boys. And Xtra! is ignoring real sexual violence in the Middle East, to publish a diatribe against the Jewish state. Your newspaper needs to ask serious ethical questions about how much it values fairness over ideology. Why do you feel the need to smear a Jewish country? Where are your cries for the people being tortured, raped and murdered in Syria. Your silence is telling. The Israelis and Palestianians are trying to negotiate peace. Your article adds name calling, bullying and defamation to a geo-political dispute that will only be solved with respect and dialogue. Once again Xtra shows its immaturity and its inability to tell both sides of a layered story.

She said she felt unsafe and so did her members. She publizes her address and cell phone anywhere and everywhere soliciting for donations. Now, she has withdrawn her complaint stating she is now in danger of hate mail? She never has in the last three years. She was stating that she was put at risk, similar to her first complaint. She is enjoying the division and believes inciting fear and hate towards the "left queers" is a game. She and her members are about bringing in mainstrem synagogues who have bought Pride booths to have more of a Pro Israeli presence. Weinstein in denial
Meir are you denying your links to to the terrorist organization Kach and its affiliates in Israel? You are on record saying you're a spokesman for Kach, a banned terrorist organization in Canada and around the world, and as such are obviously a member and supporter of Kach. Are you now denying your support of the terrorist attack by the Kach and JDL member who attacked a mosque full of Palestinians at prayer killing approximately 60 people? You are also on record supporting that terrorist. What about the JDL? The JDL in Israel and the USA is a terrorist organization according to the FBI and Israeli authorities, for quite a while the JDL was the most active terrorist organization in the US and it was during this period of very active terrorism by the JDL in the US that you decided to set up a branch of this terrorist organization right here in Toronto. Granted JDL Canada has never been proven to be a terrorist organization itself but 9 members of your group were accused of conspiracy to commit terrorism right here in the GTA, plus the fact you model your group after banned terrorist organizations speaks volumes. Weinstein are you denying that you support the use of mass murder to back your goal of the ethnic cleansing of all Arab Israelis citizens in Israel proper and all Palestinians in occupied Palestine? I've seen the video of you declaring Kahane was right and that was what Kahane wanted, ethnic cleansing, mass murder, a theocracy in Israel instead of a democracy. Does not the JDL consider one of the gravest threats to Judaism to be "the affection of Jews for non-Jews" especially when Jews married non-Jews and diluted the ethnic purity of the Jewish race? Because it says exactly that on the JDL website http://www.jdl.org/index.php/threats-adversaries/assimilation-intermarriage/ Meir you'd never try legal action in an effort to cover up your history and what you're all about since it would only serve to expose the truth about you to even more people tha

Israel the facts and history
If you are too lazy to research factual specificity (specifics) than take a moment and click on any of the links and ask yourself who are the real "Palestinians" if not Jews? Arch of Titus Israel/Judea was turned into a province within the Roman Empire called Syria-"Palaestina" by Hadrian in 135, after an extensive set of Wars between the Roman occupation forces and the Judean peoples starting around 66 AD (outlined by Joseph ben Matityahu better known as Titus Flavius Josephus, within his The Jewish Wars written about 75 AD and Antiquities of the Jews written around 94 AD) and remained so into 390 AD. After the War against the rebellious Jews, in honour of the victory the Roman General Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus was honoured by his brother, and then Emperor of Rome; Titus Flavius Caesar Domitianus Augustus in 82 AD by the victory Arch; Arch of Titus, located on the Via Sacra in Rome. This basic bit of ancient stone masonry outlines the myth of any "Palestinian" people bluntly as it clearly shows Jews being lead away after the Roman conquest of Judea not "Palestine" unless the Judeans still living in the lands after 135 AD were referred to as "Palaestinians http://www.aviewoncities.com/rome/archoftitus.htm Dead Sea Scrolls : http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/deadsea.html Synagogue of Dura-Europos At an archaeological dig site in Eastern Syria along the banks of the Euphrates. Opposed to Homosexual Rights in Israel
There needs to be a repeal of the same sex marriage nonsense, period. Call it hate if you want but we Jews who follow our Torah detest this fairy tale psychobabble about homosexual rights in Israel and elsewhere. The biblical fact is: people of this caliber would be taken out and stoned only because this type of perversion is detremintal to a people. To have a parade in our Holy city of Jerusalem with such depravity is a pernicious abomination before our G-d. For the Jews who are homosexual, I encourage you to do tshuvah (repentance) and get treatment. Your lifestyle is antithetical to Torah and Judaism. To take the rainbow, a symbol that G-d would never again destroy the earth with flooding' and use to prance around foolishly in a parade is blasphemous enough. It time for the people of the book to TAKE a stand against this amoral destructive behaviour and not compel non-homosexuals through legislation to abide with laws regarding this form of sexual pervsersion.

Responses- No Homosexual Rights
To F Roman, Jim and Former, we could go on ad nauseum about on this issue but I'll say this much, I will continue to speak out and fight this egregious perversion til' the bitter end so that my children will know good from evil Homosexuals make up a small percentage of the population and hopefully it will stay that way. Another fact is that people in that lifestyle are subjected to a brutal level of violence, 37% more than in heterosexual communities; which explains why Luca Magnotta and Jeffery Dahmer, for example, were so sadistic in their killings. This type of behaviour is menacing to society. Former, I'm not a plant as you say but living proof that a Torah observant lifestyle is worth living. When such perversion is brought into Israel, it defiles the nation and brings judgment upon us. YOU CAN have it for yourself but I and others prefer not to. Long and short of it, I'll take a stand on the issue. It's a bloody embarrassment that there are homosexual parades in the streets of Tel-Aviv. How dare you promote such depraved foolishness as if the Torah condone this. REMEMBER where you are should you go there. Do me a favour (those in the homosexual community) refrain from using the word 'gay' because none of you are truly happy; deep down you are miserable, guilt ridden, dissatisfied (or never – which is why you have multiple sexual partners), homicidal, psychotic and in some cases suicidal; how can one have gayety in that … F-Roman why don’t reach out to G-d or are you so reprobate in your thinking that it’s a lost cause??? In conclusion, I will go public on this issue and lobby my MP and the PM to put this nonsense where it belongs – back in the closet - and not in public forum. We (Jews) are people of the ‘Book’ and are to be ‘a light unto the nations’ which means not perpetuate the ‘darkness’ that world has to offer. To shown disdain and hatred for the Torah is to shown the same for the Jew; it is synonymous. To get rid of Torah and G-d is essence getting rid of us; didn’t Hitler try that already – you all sure you want to go there ….

It's Not That Simple- Moral Complexity
Here's my problem. Granted, there are profound injustices against Palestinians in Israel. Granted, also, that the IDF's attitude toward overwhelming retaliatory response also kills civilians. Granted, too, that Israel's Orthodox Right is also virulently homophobic. And we still don't know who killed those teenagers at the LGBT adolescent community centre in Tel Aviv. However, Hamas and Hezbollah are Islamist revolutionary organisations. Hezbollah is backed by Ahmadinejad's corrupt and brutal regime in Tehran, which executes lesbians and gay men. Furthermore, LGBT Palestinians are still forced to flee their homes to Israel. It's not as black and white as either uncritical defenders of either the Israelis or Palestinians suggest.

Get Real
Pesach: You're simply projecting insecurity in your non-gay identity when you claim to have this astonishing personal insight that "deep down" gays feel unsatisfied, miserable, guilty-ridden etc. How would you know this? Speak only for yourself, and your own inner feelings of self-loathing, and those of other closet cases, not others. Yes, keep fighting aginst "acting" on the feelings and keeping those numbers of open gays low, by irrationally painting all gays with a negative brush though hate propaganda. It's the same type the Nazis used in the film "The Eternal Jew". You can find stills and English translated narration online. They claimed Jews were criminals, perverse, etc., just as you do in your anti-gay hate propaganda. Your so-called statistics are lies too. We can see by statitics that heterosexuals, particularly the males, are more violent, promiscuous, adulterous, etc.. http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/Articles/000,015.pdf Gay people aren't monolithic when it comes to views on Israeli policy. Personally I have a great deal of empathy for Jews in the state of Isreal. They have very legitimate security concerns in a region where they are surrounded by those who hate them. People speak of the injustice of the way Palestinians are treated. How about the much worse injustice of a Jewish citizen going to the store to buy milk and being killed by a suicide bomber?

A tad disingenuous......
Although I have my issues with Isreal and their treatment of Palestinians, I do at the same time have wonder about one small yet, in my opinion, rather glaring omission by supporters of QAIA. Why is it you never, and I do mean NEVER, criticize Islamic nations and Islam itself for its own homophobic and rather violent responses to homosexuals? I agree that Isreal has a shameful record when it comes to Gaza and the West Bank and it's continued building of settlements on disputed lands should be seen as a provocation and roadblock to peace. On that, I believe most reasonable people would agree, however; why the deafening silence when it comes to Islamic nations? I believe a response is owed to those of us who wish to understand QAIA and whether their views are legitimate or, as some have suggested, somewhat skewed. Further, if it is not anti-semetic to criticize Isreal (which I believe is correct), then by default, it is not Islamophobic to criticize Islamic nations. Bottom line: If one is to have lofty principles and nobles goals, one most first recognize the reality of ideological pursuits.....That being CONSISTENCY of said principles, regardless of who or what the subject is.

here's the reason
Jon, the reason why people like QAIA never criticize anything any Muslim country does to homosexuals is because of their ideology of anti-racist/anti-colonialist oppression theory means that ALL Muslims are non-white therefore oppressed by white colonialism and all Israelis (and Jews) are white colonialist oppressors. The world view of QAIA is not about individual Palestinians but rather is about those people as "brown memes" in their Ur-war against white imperialism (from white blame by their non-white members and white shame by their white members). All in all a very ideologically rigid, post-Marxist oppression hierarchy of purity.

Pinkwashing
If Xtra would like to examine the hijacking of humanitarian currents for political gain, it should position itself directly in front of a good mirror. This article was ridiculously overwrought and convoluted, and the author strategically missed key points in the ongoing humanitarian struggle in the Levant. I need not even cite examples, as the comments below speak for themselves. I suggest aligning and allying yourselves with principles common sense, or risk alienating a chunk of your readership. For instance, it seems many of your articles rest on the assumption that homosexuals are all Marxist or extreme leftist visionaries. As a periodical that claims to speak for the homosexual minority, you CANNOT afford to become politically charged in matters unrelated to gays. Watch what happens once you do. And, you guessed it, that's the very same issue encountered by the Pride parade in Toronto; far be it for me to criticize the municipality, who reserves the right to withhold public funding from a now politically charged event. Anyhow, any trickle of hope I had of Xtra's commitment to journalistic integrity, impartiality and objectivity has dried up.

We oppose homophobia in Palestine, but we oppose it everywhere because it exists everywhere, even here." Further, groups are allowed to focus on one topic at a time. There are other groups in Pride focusing on other issues. For example, Iranian Queer Railroad focuses on Iran. There are also groups more global in scope, such as Amnesty International. Some people choose to focus on the issue that is closest to their hearts.

what does your being black have to do with this
Talk about a tad disingenuous! A tad doubleplusgood bullshit con job is more like it. Pedantic ideologues are almost as sickening as those who use their race as a shame stick. Thus proving my point above that QAIA is only about race and the attacking of white imperialism upon black/brown oppressed. Too bad the ideology and dogma behind it is so 20th century dead.

A lot of assumptions.....
@Marc, you are making an assertion based on a presumption, to wit that I am somehow not willing to hold pro-Isreal groups to account, yet you somehow missed my rather clearly stated view that Isreal has it's own skeletons to be addressed. The reason I did not deal with Kulanu was because the article was about QAIA. Had it been about Kulanu, I would have equally chastising of their dubious participation as well. @Proud Black Toronto Guy, your comment is an interesting one, especially given that you state QAIA is against homophobia everywhere. As for my premise being inaccurate, I don't think so, you're either against hate everywhere or you're not. Picking one nation as the bad guy is, as my original title stated, a tad disingenuous. Further, what's so unreasonable about expecting a group that, as stated above, fights homophobia yet, apparently, sees only Isreal as the culprit. It's smacks of double-speak and faux nuance. Sorry, but it seems to me, the more people try to explain or rationalize QAIA, the more I find it lacking in integrity. The intellectual contortions of rationalization must be painful. That said, I think from reading all the comment here, I get the picture. Sadly, it's not a pretty one.

Get over yourself
Anyone with half a brain could see through the idiocy of this article. A country doesn't enact pro-Gay policies to endear itself to the Gay community worldwide as a propaganda tactic. Israel is pro-Gay because it believes in human rights. Its policies towards the Palestinians are defensive because the Palestinians launch missiles at Israel and deny its right to exist. Only someone affiliated with the vile, ugly, mental defectives in Queers Against Israeli Apartheid would be stupid enough to devote all their energies to bashing a country that protects Gay rights while sucking up to people who would kill them for being Gay. The morons at Quaia shouldn't be marching at Pride - they should be demonstrating outside of a mental hospital to complain about the lack of proper psychiatric care they have received. And knowing who some of thre membership of Quaia are, quite a few of them do have serious mental illness for which they have required treatment.
