Pastor says couple was 'basically having sex' at Tim Hortons
ONTARIO NEWS / 'Why does only the gay community have rights?': pastor

The Pentecostal pastor who complained that two women were “making people uncomfortable” at a Tim Hortons in southwestern Ontario is now on the defensive, denying much of the story told by the couple.

But queer advocates in Blenheim, Ontario, where the incident happened, call his version of the story “blatantly false” and an attempt to derail a planned peaceful protest Oct 27.

“They were basically having sex . . . I don’t want my kids to see pornographic images that will burn an impression into them,” says Eric Revie, assistant pastor at Glad Tidings Community Church in Blenheim. “Also, there’s a rumour we held a prayer vigil. That is a lie and a fabrication. That never happened.”

Revie tells a very different story than Riley Murphy, 25, and her girlfriend, Patricia Pattenden, 23. The two women say they were told to leave the coffee shop by the manager after Revie complained “about a peck on the cheek” in late September.

The manager told them the coffee shop is “family-friendly” and threatened to call police. The couple says they now plan to file a complaint with the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal.
Patricia Pattenden, 23, and Riley Murphy, 25, were asked to leave Tim Hortons after a local pastor complained to the manager.

Revie says Murphy and Pattenden were “being disgusting . . . straddling one another, tongues locked, with hands down each others' clothes in the crotch area and chest area, grabbing genitals.” He says he thought Murphy and Pattenden were straight. “I don’t want my kids to see that,” he adds.

Tracy Lamourie, the social justice activist who created the Occupy Tim Hortons Facebook group, says Revie’s version sounds like exaggerated nonsense.

“The couple were with their entire family at the time,” she says. “It’s ridiculous to think they were making out and touching one another like that in front of their parents.”

Revie says gay and lesbian activists from all across Ontario are now harassing and threatening him. In the National Post on Oct 25, Revie claims to have the support of members of the “local gay and lesbian community,” but Lamourie says that is also blatantly false.

When questioned, Revie admits only one local gay person has expressed support, “plus a couple emails.”

“Where are my rights?” he asks. “How come the gay community can speak up, do whatever they want, curse and swear at people? Should I just sit down and shut up if I see things that offend me? Why does only the gay community have rights?”

In a news release on Oct 24, Chatham-Kent Pride says the actions of management at Tim Hortons in Blenheim demonstrated discrimination. “The language and actions used to justify the dismissal, or removal, of Riley and partner Patricia are unethical, irresponsible and unconscionable.”

Queer advocates in Blenheim say the pastor is simply “in full damage control.” Lamourie says Revie and his church have put on a lot of pressure this week in Blenheim to “make the whole thing just go away.”

“Everyone is worried about the pastor, not these two people who had their rights trampled on,” Lamourie says. “He wants us to cancel the protest because it makes him look bad,” she says. “The only way I will cancel the protest is if [Murphy and Pattenden] want to cancel it, and they don’t.”

A peaceful "kiss-in" protest is planned Thursday, Oct 27 at 4pm outside the Tim Hortons in Blenheim.

In a statement, Alexandra Cygal, manager of public affairs at Tim Hortons head office, said the couple "went beyond public displays of affection" and were "making other guests feel uncomfortable.”

Clear things up
to the Author could you possible post this recording. In my town (Blenheim is part of Chatham-Kent) it has become a very heated topic with witnesses coming forward backing both parties. I would like to make an educated decision and if the minister said this and then lied in other interviews it would go a long way toward my decision. But i hope you understand without the actual recording your story would be filed away with all the others that site quotes w/ no real backing

Blatchford & Saunders the nerve
Sheesh, the nerve of a journalist relying on the printed word to report a story. I want a 3d hologram recreating the incident. Then, and only then, will Solomon and I render our decision, Oops, I mean Natalie and me.

I thought Tim Horton's wasn't a bar.
When I go to the donut shop, I go to buy donuts. Maybe even eat them. I normally don't see people necking. I don't see it at the grocery store either. I usually save that stuff for home. Maybe you might see that stuff in the bar. Straight or gay, I don't want to see that stuff when I'm eating. Sounds like if you're gay, you can do whatever you want because if someone complains - then they are just discriminating. Or... perhaps they don't want to see tongue while they're eating. If gays have the same rights as the rest of us then they can show the same level of control and save their displays of affection for at home - like the rest of us.

Get the facts
1) The manager went and asked them to leave after he saw what was described as: "one was sitting with her back to me, the other was straddling her, kissing, touching body parts they should not be touching in a public setting." 2) Other papers have talked to others that were there .http://www.chathamdailynews.ca... When the manager talked to them.. "She went and she talked with them and they got volatile with her, cursing, swearing at her...they were making hand gestures to me." Tyler Williams, 21, was also at the restaurant that evening. The Tilbury resident said he witnessed the pastor speak to a manager when: "the couple were basically on top of each other. Even as a gay man myself, I don't like public displays of affection like that, especially when there were kids in the restaurant." I think that these quotes pretty much prove that these two women are liars. Furthermore, one look at the picture of them and you can see that it would be hard to mistake them for a gay couple of women - they look like a fat guy and a girl on chemotherapy. They were not kicked out for being gay - they were kicked out for lewd conduct, which in many western nations is a criminal offense.

Enough already
Asked to leave, big deal, human rights trampled on, give me a break. Lets all jump on the band wangon, because there isn't anything eles to do. Its so flippin' pathetic that a coulple lesbians, who make up maybe .08% of the Canadian population, can raise such a stink. You were asked to leave, or told to leave, shut up & leave. You two say you didn't want to make a scene,... till later.

Fast Forward 30 years from where you are Fantasy
Mr. Fantasy: You are so backward. This isn't a U.S. Southern state in the 1950s. This isn't Nazi Germany. This isn't the 1800s. It's not Saudi Arabia. Minorities have rights in Canada going back a very long time, whether you like it or not. This includes the right to access a service or accomodation available to the public. We don't discriminate. There are many tiny minorities in this country based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexaul orientation, or political belief. It's particularly unconsionable to discriminate based on things that are unchosen such as race or sexual orientation. There are no straights-only restaurants or apartments or jobs in Canada. As for your point about lesbians should have better things to do than "raise a stink", shouldn't people have better things to do besides discrimination?

Gay-only rights
The pastor's question is spot on. Why are Toronto's laws pertaining to public sex and public nudity strigently enforced against heterosexuals when gays are exempted as evidenced by Pride day and Fetish fairs? What was it last month-A live gay crucifixion at the Eagle? Anyone got a reasonable explanation why the gay community gets a pass?

Overdone
Two points. First: he said/she said.Hard to know for sure. It seems quite possible that the ladies were doing more than just a peck on the cheek. Even if that is all they did, one sitting straddling the other would perhaps already be getting stares. And it does seem likely that some people - including the Minister - could easily have thought they were a guy and girl, especially from a distance. ON the other hand.. EVEN if what the complainers say DID happen, Tim's is still being run by idiots. WHY tell people to leave, when a WARNING might have the desired effect with much less problems? A simple "Excuse me, but we've had some complaints... if you wish to continue this we will have to ask you to leave; If you comply, you may stay." Much less aggressive, more conciliatory... assuming of course that they had crossed a boundary.

Hard to believe
I find it hard to believe that any couple blatantly making out in front of their family members, its simply something you don't do. People will always change facts to win their side of an argument and the reality is if some of those people were close minded like some of the folk I've known from small towns, they are going to back the pastor because regardless what they actually saw, they witnessed something "wrong". The girls may have been a little pg but so what. Have you watched television lately? If krusty the clown can request a box full of cocaine on the simpsons sunday night television then two girls kissing is the very least if your problems.
