Magnotta hearing attracts international admirers
NEWS / Kyle Gilgen drove all the way from North Carolina to support the alleged murderer

He may be defending himself against charges of perpetrating a brutal murder, but that hasn't stopped Luka Magnotta’s fans from coming out of the woodwork.

While some have congregated on social media pages simply to support the 30-year-old Ontarian as he faces first-degree-murder charges, others have adamantly professed Magnotta's innocence (including several who have contacted this journalist).

But a few superfans have gone a step further – they've come out in person.

Kyle Gilgen drove all the way from Raleigh, North Carolina, to let the so-called Canadian Psycho know that he's not alone.
Kyle Gilgen spent the better part of two weeks in the Montreal courtroom, staring dreamily through the bullet-proof glass at Luka Magnotta.
Luka Magnotta is charged with murder and dismemberment in the death of Lin Jun.

Gilgen spent the better part of two weeks in the Montreal courtroom, sitting in the front row of the public gallery, staring dreamily through the bullet-proof glass at Magnotta, who sat and listened to the evidence brought against him.

Gilgen, who goes by the name Ethan Sommers on his Tumblr page, muses about the court case and Magnotta on his blog. "He looks fantastic! His skin is cleared up and I like his hairstyle. He really hasn’t gained too much weight either," Gilgen writes. "Since he can wear street clothes to court he’s been very fashionable."

Gilgen's blog contains a disturbing array of pictures – graves, car accidents, dead animals – as well as an abundance of pictures of Magnotta. Many of the pictures were taken during Gilgen's time in Montreal, where he took a tour of sites relevant to Magnotta’s hearing, including the apartment building that was the scene of the crime, the park where the victim's head was found, and the gravesite of Lin Jun.

He says that he's never actually met Magnotta, but he's sent a few letters, and Magnotta is aware that he has a supporter in the room.

While Gilgen describes himself as a fan, he maintains that he's not in love with Magnotta. "No, I have a boyfriend and I'm in love with him. I think Magnotta is very attractive, but I don't think that there's any sort of relationship beyond what it is," Gilgen told Xtra.

Gilgen isn’t the only interested onlooker. During the hearing a slew of criminology, sociology and journalism students, as well as an assortment of interested laypeople, sat in the courtroom and overflow room to watch the proceedings.

Several people, possible fans, have gotten a smile and wave from Magnotta as he exited the courtroom.

But Magnotta spent March 19 much less composed. After viewing video evidence that caused several in the courtroom – the judge included – to squirm, Magnotta looked visibly shaken and eventually collapsed as he was leaving his high-security prisoner's box.

Gilgen expressed concern for Magnotta's well-being.

"I really hope he's okay. I'm really worried," Gilgen told Xtra outside the courtroom room. "I haven't heard anything about if he's all right."

Magnotta returned the next morning, and while he, again, looked sick and disgusted at video and picture evidence that was being displayed on the monitor above him, he managed to regain his composure as the court moved on to other matters.

Gilgen, however, wasn't in the courtroom for that. After Montreal student publication The Political Boullion reported that Gilgen is facing charges of robbery in the United States and that he was in Canada illegally, Gilgen returned to the US.

The Magnotta preliminary hearing continues today (March 21) with witnesses from Ottawa, then breaks until April 8, when the court will hear from witnesses from Vancouver and Berlin, as well as from a friend of the victim.

Xtra speaks with Gilgen in the video interview below.

Thank you, Xtra, for introducing us to this man whose face we will undoubtedly be seeing again after he eats his lover's thighs with a knife and fork and mails his cock to the White House. In fact, maybe email a picture of this guy to Lin Jun's parents so they can stop wondering 'why' Luka Magnotta committed this crime - he did it precisely to impress sick fucks just like this guy.

disappointed
justin ling, I have been appreciative of your hard work on the magnotta file since it started, and yours has generally been the first coverage I turn to at every step of the way....but I do think this particular story is needlessly contributing to the "circus" aspect. People who follow cases like this are sick; Gilgen has clearly deified Magnotta, so why would you give him this coverage or Magnotta the satisfaction of giving a voice to his fans? I just don't see the newsworthiness here.

Thank you for the insight
I would love to be present for this inquiry and thank all, like you, for reporting what you can. turning the camera on the crowd is harder than reporting the spectacle which often turns into everyone else's story. this is a valuable and viable angle. thinking in terms of newsworthiness, this is novel, a public service and a fascinating report on what's going on in court day to day - which means reporting on who is in the room.

True-crime fans and intéressé(e)s
I really don’t get the impression this guy is benign in any way, but I should point out that Mikita Brottman, in her book _The Solitary Vice_, does a good job explaining the intent and reasoning behind people with an interest in true crime. There's also a Canadian documentary, _Dark Tourism_, that is now basically impossible to see (I’ve only heard about it). Like being a goth, taking an interest in true crime can be a means to rob death of its sting. But I am quite unconvinced this kid has such a healthy, philosophical, and mature approach.

Total LOSER
I couldn't even sit through a minute of this video, he just keeps saying "uhhhh". Why would anybody go public as a fan of Luka? This guy is just as pathetic as Luka was for trying to capture attention.

ne wlow in Luka M reporting?
This is a new journalistic low in the reporting on the Magnotta trial. If there is nothing to report then just leave it that way. No need to give media space to idiots who support Luka or think he is cute. That is not investigative journalism or even good trial reporting (I know there is a publication ban on real reporting of the preliminary but sometimes it is better to say nothing than print garbage.) There will be plenty to report on in the future

Wow, I am so jealous of Kyle .. If only I had been able to go to montreal right now, I would've done the exact same thing as him! I'm obsessed with this case .. and this man.

This is quickly turning into a _Natural Born Killers_ “Kill me, Mickey!” scenario, with distasteful overtones of pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia Web sites. Could it be better for everyone to unpublish this article and video?

It's also way too close to black and white memories of the Manson family outside the court calling Manson's trial the second crucifixtion of Christ and then X-ing themselves out of our world by carving an x between their eyes (which later following Manson's lead was recarved into a swastika). You can't kill "kill", man.

It's good that Xtra is reporting on Magnotta
I disagree with James Dubro and the other commenters above who are opposed to Xtra publishing this article. Too often, Xtra publishes articles that sugar-coat the Queer community (e.g., articles excusing HIV-positive people who have unprotected sex with their partners without disclosing their HIV status, articles portraying Tim McCaskill of QuAIA/AIDS Action Now as some sort of saintly hero when he is not). At least Xtra is not sugar-coating the fact that Luka Magnotta is a Queer killer who arose from the Toronto Queer community. Furthermore, at least Xtra is not sugar-coating the fact that Luka Magnotta has Queer groupies who appear to be exhibiting hybristophilia (also known as the Bonnie and Clyde Syndrome). Hybristophiliacs are people who are sexually attracted to people who have committed cruel, gruesome crimes such as murder. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybristophilia

Hetero women fall in love with male murderers
There are Hetero women who fall in love with male murderers and visit them in jail and some have married mass murderers who are in jail for life. This is no different, except that this murderer is Gay. Celebrity of any kind brings out the nuts who want to be touched by fame or infamy. The fact that this nut (Kyle Gilgen) is not afraid to profess love for a murderer, publicly, is most interesting...

Good point alex--but in a context that has all
Good point Alex! He is a modern gay type for sure--self absorbed, appearance over substance, cosmetic surgeries to improve appearance (obsessively) , hustling, seeking notoriety by doing & saying the outrageous. I think if the atory is in that context than a look at Luka groupies is of use. MAybe Bruce laBruce can even do a movie about him or the type (I expect Luka is an extreme example of that type or at least I hope s, lol). As long as we don't just glorify him & his deeds. Context is everything, so providing the good, bad & the ugly might be educational & even "good" journalism.

honest
Let's be honest... a newscaster reports that someone went into a McDonalds and shot 30 people. Then they flash a photo of the killer; if it is a gay viewer, his first thought is not "The asshole" but rather "OOOOOHHH, isn't he HOT! I'd like to fuck HIM!" Gay men are so used to checking everyone out on a scale of 1-10 that I doubt there are very many of us, if we are honest, who don't admit to this kind of reaction. But of course, going from there to "stalking" the guy by showing up in court takes it to another level.
