Liberals stumble over Egale survey
NEWS / Surely to God they could understand the content: Kennedy

During any election, interest groups send out surveys to parties and candidates about the issues that matter to them. This was no exception for groups whose interests mirror those of the queer communities — Egale Canada, Jer’s Vision and the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network, who all sent out questionnaires.

While the Conservative Party did not respond to any survey put to it by any of these groups, the Liberal Party did not respond to the Egale Canada questionnaire either, though it did respond to those put out by other groups.

“I’m flummoxed,” says Helen Kennedy, Egale Canada’s executive director. “I’m hoping that something fell through the cracks somewhere, and they just forgot about us, but we did send them a couple of reminders, and we haven’t heard anything back. Surely to God they could understand the content and that they would be able to answer it.”

Kennedy notes that the party did commit to restoring the Court Challenges Program in its platform, which was one of the questions asked in Egale's survey.

Kennedy also notes that the NDP’s response was very well done.

“Even the language that they were using – ‘cisgender’ – they really did a good job with responding,” Kennedy says. “It was very in-depth, very thoughtful, and obviously they know the community. The Greens’ was good for what it was, and like I said, the Liberals and Tories didn’t respond.”

"Cisgender" refers to people whose gender presentation and identity matches their biological sex, and is used to contrast with the term transgender.

While the Liberals did respond to the survey put to them by the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network as a party, the responses by their candidates to a separate survey about support for reforming Canada’s Access to Medicines Regime (CAMR) were more spotty.

This was in part because the Legal Network asked each party if they could put all of their candidates down as supporting the measures rather than wait for individual responses. The NDP, the Green Party and the Bloc all responded affirmatively, while the Liberals did not. Not every Liberal MP supported Bill C-393 in the last Parliament, though one MP who voted against it is not running again.

Three Conservative candidates did indicate support for CAMR reform, while four indicated they did not – the only party with candidates who indicated negative responses.

As for the responses from the parties on the larger survey, Legal Network executive director Richard Elliott was dismayed by one Liberal response in particular.

“In the last federal election, the Liberal Party, when asked about implementing needle exchange programs in prisons, gave a very definite yes, that they were supportive of that health service being introduced,” Elliott says. “This time around they don’t seem to have reaffirmed that support and simply say, We’ll consult with experts and stakeholders and consider what they have to say, so that’s an unfortunate weakening of their support.

“I don’t know if the parties go back and look at their responses to questioners and specific questions made previously, so I don’t know if that’s a conscious backsliding from a previous statement of support, or nobody bothered to check what they were on the record of supporting before,” Elliott adds.

Elliott also notes that of the parties that responded to the survey, all were supportive of Vancouver's Insite, the first legal supervised injection site in North America, but the Bloc more specifically indicated that it was up to each province to decide.

Jer’s Vision also put out a survey on youth issues for the first time, based on the initiative of a co-op student in their office who, despite being too young to vote, still wanted to hear from the parties on issues that matter to youth.

“The initiative was a great idea, because you never get youth, who can’t vote, so engaged in the issue, and that was fantastic to see kids asking for answers from people who don’t normally focus on them,” says Jer’s Vision’s director, Jeremy Dias.

The responses from the campaign teams — and ostensibly from the leaders themselves — were not as in touch with some of the issues as responses from some local candidates.

“I was a little disappointed that parties in general are a little further away from the issues that we’re facing,” Dias says.

Dias also notes that none of the major leaders has held a rally in the queer community.

“That’s sort of heartbreaking, because individual candidates are having parties and having events with queer candidates and queer people, and coming out to queer events, but the leaders have really shied away from those types of things, and that’s really important.”

Hope for the future
If you're a social progressive, vote NDP. The Liberals, the Bloc and the Greens just distort and harm the political landscape by dividing the socially progressive vote. Let's hope that after Monday's election, the future political landscape of Canada will evolve to have the Conservatives on one side and the NDP on the other. Let's hope that in the future, right-wing Liberals will simply join the Conservatives and left-wing Liberal, Green and Bloc supporters will simply join the NDP. That's the way it's meant to be - ideological clarity.

Something to add
It should be added that I've been doing a survey of candidates throughout Alberta on whether they would support a trans rights bill like C-389. Participation has been pretty good from NDP, Liberals and Greens, and there are also some candidates from each party not responding. Interested LGBT allies can have a look at the survey in XLS spreadsheet form at: http://albertatrans.org/c389candidsurvey2011.xls Not that I think Egale is doing anything "wrong" by comparison, necessarily. I'd guess that the Liberals may be worried that the Egale survey would be publicized and therefore used against them with centrists. But that's speculating.

Alienating
I think I would think twice before voting for someone who uses the word "cisgender" in public. I don't particularly want a government that thinks in these terms. I'd have no problem voting NDP, but they would have to move way over to the centre and show that they're capable of representing all Canadians.

alienating my aunt fanny
Jim: get your alienated head out of your posterior and clue in to the present century. Heterosexual is a word created by queers because otherwise the available term would be >. Cisgender is a word created by trans people because otherwise the alternative to transgender would be >. This is how history happens. One step, one word at a time. It's fun. You should try this progress thing.

Hey...
I'm just expressing my views. No need to get personal and insulting about it. But, if I'm honest about it, I have to admit that, as a gay man, I don't give a rat's ass about trans people, lesbians, queers, etc. I'm not trying to be insulting though. I just see their issues as not mine.

Just What do their answers mean?
I'd have liked to have seen a response by those who answered to the questions; Is transsexual the same as transgender? And who, what communities, live within the transgender umbrella? I say that because it's very easy to blankly answer the questions without actually knowing or understanding it. Especially as asked. I'd rather know the politician actually understands what they are saying when they say "I think GI and GE are important issues"

Nice tip to the LPC
I accept that it was a just a major screw up that the LPC did not respond to the Egale survey. Another example of their poor campaign. The response to the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network shows just how far to the right the LPC has gone. And when you go back to the last Parliament, The LPC's Marc Garneau actually tried to weaken the NDP bill to make cheaper HIV/AIDS drugs available. It shows a lack of direction, default point being go to the right. The LPC proved not to be the alternative, hell they lost Toronto. The downtowns of Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Hamilton, Halifax, St. John's, Ottawa, Windsor and Quebec City voted NDP. The LPC in thier current state need to re-evaluate and people need to stop looking at them as the party of Trudeau. Jean Chretien changed all that.

It is NOT surprizing to me
having had dealings with EGALE and Helen Kennedy, along side a precedent setting Gay Family Equality Charter Challenge due to NO Court Challenge Program and fulfilling Okanagan & Little Sisters Test for funding, then lastly my emails from the Liberals which one of their guys fucked up by replying to me "what should I tell this guy, that we'll put it in the platform?"....this was in response to begging for help to save my daughter who turns 8 this May 15th, 2011. THE ALBERTA GOVERNMENT, Justice Redford also told me NOT to worry about losing my child due to my ex DJR Denying everything with OUR SURROGATE DD about my intentional, plannned, and actual commitment of over 3 years to date in my daughter or at least the relationship I HAD. DISCRIMINATION AND NEGLECT are products of Alberta Legislation and Conservative Feminist Agendas. Parent Alienation was threatened and fulfilled by DJR. I have transcripts of conversations, emails and I'll prove the FRAUD, MISREPRESENTATION, Contempt, Defamation and Perjury. THen for DD the collusion, etc. CAP is taking care of DR. PP and ALS is taking care of McLawyer, I for one can belief all of this I find it disturbing that only NOW does EGALE's staff finds themselves "flummoxed".I've been dealing with our lack of Gay Rights recognition and equality and discrimination and even EGALE can't help me, "Understanding" gay rights lawyers like Daryl Aarbo didn't even SEE or AGREE with me when I TOLD HIM I had a CHARTER CHALLENGE, every day was important due to child abuse and PAS as I reported to Alberta officials, Federal officials...and to a Supreme Court judges has already stated "to have a child, and lose it IS DISCRIMINATION. This is my story and it was malicious and THREATENED by DJR. It is NOW REALITY and TWISTED by deception and self preservation and oil like GREED and PRIDE.
