World-famous drag queen Lady Bunny came through Toronto recently and delivered a body slam to those gays wanting to serve in the military.
“If gays are against bullying and people with a brain are against bullying of any kids of any kind, why are gays seeking the right to go and bully people in a uniform?” she asks. “Because their skin is brown? Because they're Muslim? I don’t approve of that.”
Below is a quick excerpt from our video interview with Lady Bunny. We will have more for you in the next week.

Bravo Lady Bunny on the military
Lady Bunny is right on about lgbts and the American military. The U.S. military is a bullying institution. It is not about protecting Americans. It is about hurting and intimidating people in other countries -- most often to steal their oil or other resources for U.S. corporations. No lgbt person in their right mind should want to be part of that. However I do defend the right of lgbts to join the military.

Look at yourself first Lady Bunny
Before criticizing LGBT people who wish to serve in the military, people like Lady Bunny should examine their own shortcomings and failures. In particular, in this day and age, why do older gay men like Lady Bunny continue to perform as drag queens and crudely mock and imitate women and promote negative stereotypes? It’s really an affront to all women - both cis and trans. There will soon come a time when LGBT people (and larger society) will look at drag queens the same way that we now look at white male performers from the early 1900s who crudely mocked and imitated African Americans, and promoted negative stereotypes, by wearing "black face".

Ron, look at yourself
Ah Ron, you must think your words are inspirational and have merit; sadly, they do not. The problem with you and other gay men is you fail to see that drag is not a way to mock women, it is an art form and a performance. Would you consider the musical Hairspray a mockery of women? Seeing as how Edna Turnblatt is often played by a man dressed as a woman, it clearly must be. But why should it matter to me, I'm not a drag queen, except some of my friends are and I respect them for it. To dress as a woman when you're a man, you have a LOT of guts, and putting them down means you have less balls than they do. Why don't you try dressing as a queen before trying to be one and criticizing other people for what they do. You're promoting the same hate the bigots do honey, get over yourself.

Prejudge much, bitch?
I have family who serve in the military and friends as well. I have met gay people who serve in the military. They don't do it because they want to "bully Muslims" or people with brown skin. They do it for reasons of service, a career path for many working class families, a way out of poverty, collapsing blue-collar towns who have lost industries, to escape a rural backwater and a multitude of other reasons. Generalized prejudice has never been a good idea. Let's not disguise it as humour. And finally, drag is an art form? Whatever...When my sister-in-law served in Afghanistan, she taught English to girls ON HER OWN TIME. She didn't bully.
