Homophobic group to help award Diamond Jubilee Medals
NEWS / REAL Women of Canada website states that bullying may be justified

A Canadian group whose homepage currently states that one of the biggest threats to families is the “homosexual lobby” and “the media” has been appointed to help government decide how to award Diamond Jubilee Medals to honour Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years of service to Canada.

REAL Women of Canada, a socially conservative, anti-feminist group that often acts as an intervenor in court cases that oppose queer rights, will recommend medals under the social and volunteer category.

An article on the group’s homepage also dismisses bullying, saying it's a justified reaction on the part of youth frustrated by the “special treatment” granted to queer or non-Christian youth in schools.

The Canadian Queen’s Diamond Jubilee program is awarding medals to 60,000 “outstanding” Canadians, according to the governor general’s website.

Coordinators have invited non-governmental partners to advise government about worthy Canadians who deserve a medal.

A spokesperson for the governor general’s program says a committee decided on partner organizations based on a number of different categories, such as health, multiculturalism, and arts and culture.
REAL Women of Canada's homepage.

“I don’t think they reflect the general views of women in Canada,” says Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, which was not asked to participate. “I’m not saying they don’t have a right to be there; however, you need to balance the playing field a little bit, and if you’re going to appoint them, then you should appoint women from any number of women’s groups who are very progressive, aren’t homophobic and transphobic, and deserve to be at the table.”

Medals have been awarded to constituents deemed worthy by MPs, senators, provincial and territorial premiers, lieutenant governors and territorial commissioners.

“I thought it was interesting that you have this group that’s on this list as a recognized non-governmental partner to the awards who has homophobic leanings and advocates against rights, and you don’t even have one organization whose exclusive purpose is to advocate for LGBT rights,” says Casey Oraa, vice-chair of Queer Ontario. “It’s kind of disturbing.”

Sheryl Hoshizaki, executive director of the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund, agrees.

“When you choose an organization like that, that has such narrow definitions of who Canadians are and what women should do, it’s really problematic because the whole idea behind the Jubilee medals would be to ensure that you reach out across Canada,” she says.

Hidden agendas...
The Harper regime has a strong element of bigots and haters supporting their existance. Harper caters to them. These are the people who accuse the gay community of having some sort of hidden agenda when fighting for simple rights of equality. Harper and his goons are the ones with the hidden agenda. The Real Women of Canada are, in fact, NOT the real women of Canada, but they are Harper's choice. We must all work very hard to defeat Harper's regime in the next election if we are to survive and not be forced back into the closet.

human rights
It's a sad day for Canada when Diamond Jubilee medals are handed to a known homophobic women' club at a time when the British Commonwealth has made clear its respect for human rights and had denounced human rights violations in formal colonies. The Queen will surely take note of that, and I hope she finds a way to slam it to Harper...er...diplomatically but publicly.

It's time for the Republic of Canada
Why are we celebrating the monarchy anyway? It's time for the Republic of Canada. Join Citizens for a Canadian Republic today. See http://www.canadian-republic.ca/home.html

so?
I dont see what the monarchy has to do with anything. Weather our government embraces a queen several thousand miles away, or several thousand queens a few miles away, the problem is the same, our government.

Not too concerned
I'm gay and I received a Diamond Jubilee Medal. I am not overly concerned...there are many in our community being honoured for their contributions to Canadian society as well.

Your Excellency
March 9, 2012 Your Excellency: I am writing to express my profound concern about the participation of REAL Women of Canada in the selection of prospective Canadian nominees for Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medals. As an activist for the equality rights of Canada’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) communities, I am an ardent defender of freedom of speech. Our communities’ first legal victories were won on the basis of freedom of expression and the right to privacy. I do not dispute the right of REAL Women of Canada to express, or even publish on their website, such disturbing views as identify “the homoseual lobby” (which I suppose must include myself and millions of my fellow Canadians) as one of “the serious problems facing families today.” However, I am deeply troubled when there exists a direct link from the website of the Governor General of Canada to comments on REAL Women of Canada’s site; comments that appear to justify anti-LGBT and racially motivated violence in Canadian schools. I quote: “However, the school boards are so gay-friendly that gays, like other, favoured, usually “multicultural” groups, can get away with practically any kind of behaviour. … Could it be that some bullying is a result of sheer frustration on the part of the “ordinary” student, who sees that certain students are favoured?” I plead with Your Excellency to distance yourself and the highest office in our land from such hateful rhetoric. Furthermore, I urge you to bring Canada’s many fine LGBT organizations into the selection process for this prestigious, once-in-a-generation award. Your Execllency, please let Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee be an expression of the true diversity and humanity of Canada in the 21st Century. Wishing you every joy and success in the discharge of your great responsibilities, I am most respectfully your servant, Hugo Dann

New GG is a Social Conseravtive.
I always wondered when David Johnson was appointed Governor General by Stephen Harper, if he was one of the Social Conservatives. Now we know he is. This should make for an interesting interface to Canada's artist community.

The Queen likely would not approve
The late Queen Mum loved the gays who worked in her residence and had a good humored rapport with them. Likely her daughter the current queen may be similar. While she is seems formal, she is not without social grace as I saw by her formal visit to Eire (Ireland)and her good effort to speak a few words of Irish which I could immediately understand. Her pronunciation was precise and clear. She wanted to promote friendship between the people of Ireland and the UK. So, I am hopeful that her general good nature extends also to gay people of anywhere (in this case Canada) and that if she caught wind of this antigay discrimination she would not approve. I am sure that the Harper government would likely make sure she will be protected and isolated from knowing of these potentially embarrassing implications.

Vile
It sickens me that groups like this not only exist in our country, but that they are awarded by the government. REAL women don't discriminate.

Back at ya Vile
You know KayTor -- No one ever says that about REAL Franophone bigots who discriminate against anyone who doesn't speak French. Everyone has the right to think what they want to. Canada is becoming too authoritarian. Harper has the right as Prime Minister to choose who he wants to put in place. Afterall ,we have a large segment of Quebec committing treason every day in Canada and our governemnt endorses that! Lesbians, Gays and anyone else of a different sexual orientation should have the right to speak up, get married and raise kids. If you don't like what you hear, block your ears. If you don't like what you see, turn off the television. If you don't like what you are reading, stop reading. It is as simple as that. Afterall, we still live in Canada and last time I checked, for now, we are still a free, democratic country. I wish an Anglophone looking for a job in the capital was treated with as much respect as our LGBT counterparts!

NZ: Our Own Embarrassing Tories...
Don't worry. You're not alone. One of our conservative administrations gave a Womens Suffrage Day medal to Patricia Bartlett, a pro-censorship zealot who'd campaigned *against* criminalisation of spousal rape ten years beforehand. Might do to do some digging about embarrassing skeletons in the case of the recipients of the Diamond Jubilee medal.
