Harper's new speechwriter is a gay rights opponent
FEDERAL POLITICS / Former columnist espoused social conservative values

THE GUY BEHIND HARPER'S SPEECHES. Nigel Hannaford, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's new speechwriter, is the latest in a string of social conservatives appointed to the PMO.
(calgaryherald.com)
The Prime Minister's Office has hired a former Calgary Herald columnist who has a history of speaking out against gay rights.

Nigel Hannaford has resigned from the Calgary Herald to be a speechwriter for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Hannaford, who has been in the newspaper business since 1975, joined the Calgary Herald in 1999 and was appointed in 2000 to the Herald's editorial board — a position he held until recently.

In his Slings & Arrows column, Hannaford espoused socially conservative values, arguing against gay rights and undermining the legitimacy of human rights commissions.

Referring to former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau's 1969 decision to decriminalize homosexuality, Hannaford wrote in 2005, "Fine, said lots of people. Leave gays alone? Fair enough. But, let 'em be Boy Scout leaders? Have each other's benefits? Adopt kids? Marry each other? Ridiculous. Anybody seeking political office who suggested it would have been laughed off the hustings. Yet, the Liberals are ready to legalize gay marriage. How did we get to this point?"

Of the 1998 Delwin Vriend Supreme Court ruling, which required that Alberta add sexual orientation to its human rights legislation, Hannaford wrote in 2003, "So much for democracy."

And when Elsie Wayne, former deputy leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, said in 2003 that gays should "shut up" about marriage and that Canadians shouldn't have to "tolerate" gay pride parades, Hannaford wrote in her defence, "Wayne gets my vote. ... Canadian society has been turned upside down in the past 35 years and things regarded as sin in 1965 have special status in 2003."

Regarding discrimination and equality, Hannaford has argued in favour of the former and opposes the latter: "It's time we reclaimed the word 'discrimination' for polite conversation, and lose our fear of what it describes. And, let's also dump our obsession for equality: Between the two, we can no longer have a rational debate about the basics of society."

Recently, in his May 8, 2009 column, Hannaford lamented that Section 3 of Alberta's Human Rights Act makes it difficult to prevent Albertans from bringing the same kind of "creepy curriculum" that BC has allowed, "in which gay advocates design class material promoting their persuasion right down to kindergarten."

In the same article, Hannaford, who is an advocate for free speech, implied that human rights advocates are "whiners" and claimed that human rights tribunals "operate like communist show trials, not courts."

Hannaford's appointment raises concern for longtime gay activist and former Edmonton city councillor Michael Phair.

"Much of what Mr Hannaford writes and has indicated in his work as a journalist, I suspect, reflects Prime Minister Harper's and his party's position on what they would like for Canadian society to be, and I think it harks back to a 1950s approach," says Phair, who worries that the Harper government will continue to look for backdoor ways to reduce equality for the queer community, as well as women and other marginalized communities.

Gay NDP MP Bill Siksay says he's not surprised to learn of Hannaford's appointment.

"We know that there's still — within the Conservative Party and within the Conservative caucus — lots of folks who don't support the full human rights of gay and lesbian Canadians, who are not friends of the queer community, and so in a sense it's not surprising," says Siksay. He says the queer community must remain vigilant to ensure the Conservatives never turn back the clock on hard-won victories.

Hannaford's hire is the latest in a string of appointments that place social conservatives in the upper echelons of the Harper government. In July 2008, one of Canada's most prominent Christian conservatives, Darrel Reid, was appointed director of policy for the Prime Minister's Office and later moved to one of the top political posts in the country when he was promoted to deputy chief of staff in February.

Another Christian evangelical, Paul Wilson, replaced Reid as director of policy. Wilson is a former executive director of Trinity Western University's Laurentian Leadership Centre. Trinity Western is a Christian-focussed university based in the Bible-belt of Langley, BC.

Gay issue had been dealt with already!
You gotta watch those Christians, they actually stand for something! Unlike those pesky Liberals who stand for everything, if they think it will bring them to power. Trying to raise the old homosexual nonsense, is about the only thing the Libs can do right now, hoping no one will notice what IFFY stands for this week. Gay marriage is off the table as far as the Tories are concerned, been dealt with, end of story. So get on with something else already.

Sick of nonsense
I guess you wouldn`t complain if the position went to a gay activist eh? When you are guys going to understand that there are different points of view out there in the real world? And that your point of view is not necessarily the RIGHT or ONLY point of view. Guess you can`t always haul someone before the human rights commission to get your way eh? It certainly wouldn`t work in this case. Oh well.

you make one mistake. You think that most people in this country are pro-gay. They aren`t... they mostly don`t care about the gay agenda. And there is more going on than just your agenda... and that is where Harper shines and he will get the support he needs for a majority.

It's such a shame that the USA gets a decent leader and we get a blithering idiot without a musical note in his head. Screw religion, screw single-minded rednecks, and screw the tories. LGBT people should be able to marry whoever the hell they want. Oh and sick of nonsense, these are people we are talking about. A minority whose been shoved under the carpet by idiots like you. So I guess we should just accept every point of view out there huh? Hitler had a f*cking point of view, look what happened there. God some bloody people are so blind, the gays fight for their rights and they won't stop until they get them. The crime against them has just gone up 8% in England. Go back to school and get educated with a wider perspective on other people, if you are so blind as to not see they just want equality then you might want to look up the definition of psychopath by Dr. Robert Hare- theres a few similarities you might find interesting. P.S. The majority of people in this country vote for gay rights, ever look at stats before you claim something?

why
I'll never understand why the Conservative party has its trolls commenting in newspapers like these, do they really think they're going to convince LGBT folk to turn against themselves by supporting their social conservative ways? Or is it that they're just trying to be as antagonistic as possible knowing that they'll never get the LGBT vote? oh yeah "fed-up" our lives are not a point of view, we are not a concept to be debated we are very real people and we aren't going anywhere, you can't equate actual people with mere ideology no matter how hard you may want to, to your type we're a concept, a sin, but in the real world we're actual human beings and our existence and equality can't be debated, it can only recognized or not recognized by those who choose to ignore reality.

rather sad
Socially conservative gay guys confuse me yet I can sort of understand them, we're taught from an early age that being gay is very bad and shameful, it must be a terrible burden for those who can't let go of such hateful beliefs about themselves, to join forces with those who wouldn't "lower" themselves to be associated with any gay folk and who would never recognize their equality or worth as a human being. Hearing from such gay guys used to make me very angry thinking how could they turn on themselves and their own kind? But nowadays I can understand a little better and just find it very sad instead. How horrible it must be to live your life like that, believing the worst about yourself and others like yourself, some folk never had the chance to break free from the anti-gay oppression we all grew up with but have instead incorporated such anti-gay beliefs into their own lives in spite of themselves. We may have legal equality in this country but we still have a very long way to go before we achieve social equality for all of us everywhere in Canada.

I don't care about a person's sexual orientation, but at the same time trying to bring attention to your cause with the advertisement to the left of this page really doesn't help your cause. This story has been linked by a mainstream news aggregator, and what does the average person see when they get to this site? They see two men, one black and one white (diversity AND gay rights...how Canadian) with the caption; SQUIRT.ORG Anytime Anywhere Anyone Far be it for me to point out that it is this callous attitude and sense of promiscuity that disgusts many Canadians, regardless of their stand on gay rights. That ad basically confirms the worst of what has been said about gay men....they spread disease because they are more interested in self-satisfaction than the good of society.

Learn some tolerence
You know for people who demand recognition and tolerance of their lifestyle, it does not seem to be a two way street. Personally I think a person should be able to voice their opinion with-out being labeled by intolerant people as intolerant for voicing a point of view. We gotta get past this collectivist idea that we all should think alike or be ostracized, a healthy society has room for many different and conflicting views. it's an opinion and he is entitled to express it. I tolerate gays, does not mean I agree with them, nor do I have too, that said my favorite blogger is gay.

And if the Squirt.org ad offends you, don't click on it. To: sick of nonsense
Newsflash, sick of nonsense: the majority of Canadians DO in fact support equal rights for gays and lesbians, with a full 2/3 supportive of gay marriage. Sorry if you don't like it, but that's reality. Equality under the law isn't a "point of view" - it means equal treatment for ALL Canadians, period. To discriminate against one segment of society based on what consenting adults do behind closed doors is absurd, given that in reality it's none of your business.

take it from this conservative party member the stuff you are spouting off about is just a lot of liberal BS. I do not approve of abortion for the sake of birth control but I do approve of the right for a woman to make her own choice. I do approve of any sexual orientation but I don't approve of gay pride parades. Why advertise what goes on in your bedroom. Who cares. I have talked with many of the Conservative politicians over the years both federally and provincially and I have never been asked about my sexual orientation or my religion. I am a woman married for years to the same man and I do not believe in god. Lulu, are you denying that the CPC tried to reopen the gay marriage debate in order to satiate their rabidly anti-gay, Christian base? I watched that vote from the gallery on Parliament Hill so don't try and say it didn't happen. Are you also denying that there is a movement within the CPC ranks to deny women the right to exercise control over their own bodies? Private members bills to do that have been prepared and presented by CPC backbenchers. Are you also denying that Harper's government has been complicit in the abandonment and torture of several Muslim Canadians overseas? Mr. Abdelrazik and Ms. Mohamud for starters would disagree with you, as would many, many others. So given that what I posted are facts and you don't know anything about me how on earth can I be spouting the "Liberal party line" when I'm not even a Liberal? I'm sorry you don't seem to know much about what your party is up to but if you truly support equality and womens rights and believe all Canadians deserve the protection of their government you really should pay more attention when you are at these policy conventions. I've been to them as well and those attitudes are RAMPANT throughout that party. It's part of the reason I gave up my membership.

Being fair
"Gay marriage is off the table as far as the Tories are concerned, been dealt with, end of story." I agree with this comment by Jim Taylor. I think it is important to acknowledge that Taylor's comments were made at a point when gay marriage was very controversial (with roughly 49% of Canadians being opposed.) Also, he is being hired to write speeches, not to develop policy. Really, some level of tolerance for people with Conservative views is fair -- unless we think they do not deserve to have jobs.

You've got a very good point "Really, some level of tolerance for people with Conservative views is fair -- unless we think they do not deserve to have jobs." and the fact is this guy is going to be gone as soon as Harper is. What is somewhat troubling about it for those who watch which way the winds blow is that Harper is surrounding himself with even more social conservatives who until relatively recently he had kept in check and quiet in the backgrounds. These sorts of appointments may very well portend a much more robust social conservative "outbreak" in the government. On some levels that's a good thing since I don't believe the Harper Cons. will ever get a majority with social conservative policies, the more prominent they are the fewer votes they'll get, but in the meantime they can still do a lot of damage to people's lives with their social conservatism. Even right now we're seeing the definition of serious drug criminal redefined for the social conservatives, the new definition includes anyone who grows 3 or more pot plants. They will now be automatically sent to prison and judges won't be allowed any discretion in sentencing them. That's the social conservative idea of getting tough on crime which will have the alternative effect of increasing organized crime in Canada since it will become far too risky to grow your own pot people will resort again to buying it, largely from bikers or much larger organizations. Not to mention destroying the lives of those who enjoy smoking pot but still prefer to grow their own for whatever reason, the vast majority of these people aren't hardened criminals who belong in jail but social conservatives don't believe in shades of gray and are doing lots of damage already to people's lives in every field they touch. Even adding just one more is worrisome for those who care about personal freedoms.

re: learn some tolerance
So you think we all should be tolerant of intolerance? That gay and anti-gay are simply two sides of a debate that should be kept civil? You are completely mistaken but so are many others. Gay folk are not concepts or ideas we are real people but anti-gay beliefs really are just a concept or idea, its like comparing apples and trees, two completely different categories of things. You can't debate whether people should be gay or not because people simply are gay or not, its not a choice or something that can be changed however you can debate whether one should be anti-gay or not since that is simply an idea, a concept that can be debated. Why should we accept people who are against us? Who hate us for whatever reason. You can't agree or disagree with gay folk anymore than you could agree or disagree with white folk, you can hate or not hate but don't try to pretend that we're nothing but abstract concepts to be debated civilly instead of real human beings to be accepted or not accepted. You don't have to like LGBT folk, I doubt anyone really cares if you do or not, but when you start trying to treat us unequally or take away our rights then that's a whole different matter, you may think you're trying to debate us but really you're threatening us and will be responded to in kind just the same as I would expect you to respond if I were threatening you by arguing that your rights should be taken away, that you are a sin, that you don't deserve to be treated the same as any other human being. What you think of as debating opinions about LGBT folk is in fact threatening, to a degree, since we're real human beings and not concepts to be debated. Do you see why LGBT folk tend to be intolerant of anti-LGBT opinions?

Unconstitutional Government
Lets just remember that the arguments posed by the writer in question were verging on hate crimes by our constitution. I think many people in his home town might not "get it" why his views are not the views of the rest of Canada, but they ARE NOT. BC is a much larger province and look (even with a conservative style government in power) the difference is astounding in the views, just a hop over the Rockies away. Again, in Saskatchewan - closer neighbor still - they certainly don't have a culture of denial for human rights. Ontario and Quebec are socially conservative in a different way (in that they believe in polite debate) but certainly they do not support, on average, the abolition of human rights. This man espouses beliefs which are incongruous with governing in a constitutional democracy. Government is supposed to uphold the constitution - not look for ways to circumvent it. However, Harper is precisely trying to enact unconstitutional ideas. A person like him needs a good propagandist. This man's job will be to put those ugly unconstitutional values in a "moral" framework to disguise hate as public policy and to confuse the public with eloquent words that contain the poison pill Harper wants us to swallow. He hopes we will love this man's words and forget that way back when Trudeau helped us to get a constitution the topic was debated and the side of human rights won then, as it will now. Democracy spoke then and it wasn't popular in his home town then either. The opinion was over-ruled by the majority in the 1960's and it is still the wrong opinion today. Maybe if he hates being wrong so often he should try understanding why the rest of Canada thinks human rights ARE important. Maybe in cities with more diverse cultures other Canadians get a bigger perspective on humanity. I don't know for sure, but Harper and his hate monger don't scare me, and I don't think they will impress anyone in the rest of the country.

Hannaford's smelly past
Nigel Hannaford was editor of the Alberni Valley Times for several years, a "devout" Christian who was anti-everything except thumping his bible and his extreme views. Oh, and I nearly forgot, he was so busy thumping a woman other than his wife that his marriage ended. This is not defamation, this is fact. I have lived in the Alberni Valley for nearly 30 years, and my child (temporarily) attended a Christian school, which Hannaford's offspring also attended. I remember clearly when his affair was revealed, and the wave of shock throughout our community that followed. I wonder if the PMO's office knows this little tidbit of information about their latest gem of a propaganda pusher? Maybe someone would like to inform the PMO's office of his philandering ways? That fact might run diametrically to what the PMO's office might be trying to achieve by hiring this propagandist.

Hannaford is a refreshing change
Hello Godless soddomites. Hannaford provides a real refreshing change to the kind of crap shoved down the throats of Canadians in the name of political correctness. Canada recognizes the supremacy of God, and so we cheerfully give equality to the gay, lesbian and transgendered species, while the BC education system has been hijacked to warp the minds of our children. Did we kill or maim gays because of it? No. We turned the other cheek. I like reading Hannafords' musings. Thankfully, the same Charter of Rights that give protection to the people of the gay persuasion, also protects his freedom to speak his mind. You are free to ignore his 'rants' and let those who enjoy truth and sober thought the freedom to read and savour them. We will happily allow you to poke each other in the ass all you want. We're pretty secure in the knowledge that you will bear the fruits of your folly in your flesh. Hah. Did I piss you off enough yet? I can sleep soundly tonight. Can you?

So as in the Days of Noah
It always intriqued me that when Jesus was describing the evil conditions that would warrant cataclysmic destruction that Sodom faced, he said that"as it was in the days of Noah,so shall it be in the days of the Son of Man (Christ's second coming). They were eating and drinking and marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the Ark.... Now the point here is that God doesn't condemn eating or drinking; nor does He condemn marrying and giving in marriage. This has got to be a prophecy of a society whose behavior in these areas has careened completely off-track. It is speaking of the horrific effects we see to day with embracing sinful behavours and upbraiding the righteous endeavours of the Christian right.

Why we have Right Wing, Anti-Gay Rhetoric at X-Tra
In regards the mystery some posters have brought up as to why there are so many right wing extremists commenting here on a gay positive site, it is because the extremist anti-gay and anti-abortion religious website, lifesitenews.com , is putting up headlines on its main page re-directing its readers to this article from Xtra. I suppose they consider themselves quite clever?
