Ford to dodge debate at The 519
NEWS / Keeping his distance from gay community in days leading up to election

Rob Ford will be noticeably absent at Monday night’s mayoral debate at the 519 Church Street Community Centre because, he says, he’s bound by previous commitments.

What exactly those commitments are, we can only speculate. His website’s event calendar shows him curiously wide open that day.

“It’s a scheduling conflict,” he told Xtra. “Anyone can ask me questions anytime. They can call me. I return all my calls.”

Actually, I tried all week to get an interview -- however short -- with Ford. Not one call was returned. I called, emailed and left voicemail messages a couple times, but the voice mailbox of Adrienne Batra, director of communications for Ford's campaign, was full.

And, as a side note, Ford is the only frontrunner in the mayoral race who didn’t accept Xtra’s invitation to come into the newsroom for an editorial board sit-down.

So, I went to him.

First I tracked him down Wednesday night, all the way up in the Jane and Finch area. He was at a mayoral debate hosted by the Canadian-Jamaican Centre at 995 Arrow Rd.

I travelled 45 minutes north of the downtown, braved the pouring rain, a delayed bus and a soggy walk along Finch Ave.

When Ford arrived, about 45 minutes late, the other candidates had already started the debate without him and a scrum of reporters and television crews were waiting at the front doors to catch his grand entrance.

No time to talk, I was told. Determined, I waited until the end of the debate.

When I asked how he plans to mend relationships with the gay community, Ford shook his head, crumpled up his brow and looked dumbfounded at the question.

“I’ve never had any problem with the gay community," he said. "No problems. I treat everyone the same, no matter what your sexual preference is. Taxpayer’s money is taxpayer’s money. I never had a problem with anyone. I watch out for taxpayers, and that’s exactly what I’m going to continue to do, and always will do.”

Before I could ask another question, Ford was whisked away to speak to audience members, “real taxpayers,” a member of his team said.

Feeling somewhat unsatisfied with his answer, and still unable to reach him on the phone, I again ventured out to get him on the record the next day, at another evening event on Thursday. This time: Stand Up for Change with Rob Ford, described as a night of comedy for his supporters at the Hilton Hotel on Richmond St.

Once again, Ford was late to arrive. I’m sensing a pattern.

Once I made sure the escalator is the only entrance to the event space downstairs, I perched myself at the top and waited, keeping an eye on both entrances.

Recognizing me from the Canadian-Jamaican Centre on Wednesday, Ford's director of policy Mark Towhey was quick to remind Xtra of its place among Toronto’s media.

“You have no credibility. Not you personally, your paper,” he said. “You’ve never written anything that’s true. Journalism starts with facts.”

Ford's imminent arrival triggered a buzz among the members of Team Ford, especially Batra, who said I could have “a couple minutes.”

I asked Ford if he had ever attended a Pride parade.

“This year we donated a lot of materials, and we had a whole team down there this year,” he said.

But were you there personally?

“No, I was up north. I was with my family up north, but we did support it. We have been doing it for 20 years. We have a cottage in Huntsville.”

Oh. Well, what about Pride funding. Will the event continue to be funded?

“I think we need a level playing field," said Ford. "I think either we fund all the parades or we fund none of them. Right now, we fund Pride and Caribana, but the others, like the St Patrick’s Day parade and Santa Claus parade, doesn’t get any funding. So I think we should fund all or none.”

Well, since the city can’t afford to fund every parade, does that mean funding will be pulled if you’re elected mayor?

“I think we need to get the private sector involved. We can’t afford to start funding all of them. So we should find a fair and balanced approach.”

So would you pull funding?

“I’m going to review everything, review all the funding and see what’s fair for everybody.”

Before I could sneak in any more questions, Batra quickly moved him to another waiting reporter from Newstalk 1010.

Then, just before pushing through the glass doors to leave the Hilton, Towhey mutters to me, “Prove me wrong.”

I think all my facts are in order.

Smithermen and Pantalone
At the 519... Can you hear the sound of one hand clapping with on Smithermen and Pantalone at the Monday debate? Maybe it is time for xtra to contemplate the fact that there is life north of bloor and those voters have other interests besides Queers Against Aparthied and the championing of dubious "pro sex" positions. Rob Ford is looking after his interests in the same manner that smithermin is. It is very evident that Rob Ford will not expose himself to or waist time with a voting bloc he does not have a chance with. What is worth noting that at least with Rob Ford you know what you are getting, the same can not be said for smithermen aka slithermen. Is he middle of the road? Right Wing? Left Wing? My guess is in order to protect the bloated spectacle that pride has become, xtra and alot of the community with slide over to smithermen and to hell with any other concerns...

Really?
"I’ve never had any problem with the gay community". Really? Then why is Ford working so hard to make a problem now? Not too surprising from someone who still uses the term "sexual preference" and opposed funding AIDS research because (in his mind) only gay people and drug users get AIDS. I don't like who he surrounds himself with either. But if it keeps them out of Windsor, I guess it's ain't all bad.

Not all gays are enamoured with George Smitherman
Not all gays are enamoured with George Smitherman. I happen to know Ford is not homophobic, as some would paint him. I think Ford answered truthfully to Xtra's reporter, although it appears the reporter tried to goad him. I do like his remarks about Pride funding. PT is an 800 pound gorilla that scoops all the funding, leaving other gay festivals with next to nothing. I like Ford's idea of spreading it around. Am I voting for Ford? That's a personal decision October 25th.

Something's fishy
If Ford's being consistent in his desire to treat all communities fairly, why is he missing the LGBT-themed debate but still going to the one hosted by the Jamaican association? Isn't that pandering to a special interest? Anyways, good luck in trying to get rid of funding for ALL festivals and parades, including Caribana or the Polish Festival. Surely, that's not going to piss off a lot groups. More likely, Ford singles out Toronto Pride as an example of wasteful spending and leaves all the other parades alone, throwing a carrot to so-con part of his base. That's what the federal Tories did and if anything, this guy makes Stephen Harper look Churchillian in comparison.

George, Your Money Management ....
Hey, George Smitherman, where's the MILLIONS of the working people's money that you were directly responsible for WASTING while in the Provincial Liberal party making terrible decisions ? E-HEALTH ! just to name one. And you want to run Canada's most populated city ? SCARY ! (Just in time for Halloween)

re: Not all gays are enamoured with George Smither
I agree with you about Smitherman, to me he's gone too far right in an effort to try and attract Ford's voters, but I do think he is an awful lot better than Ford. I don't know how you can claim he's not homophobic, or heterosexist considering he didn't the lives of gay men or needle using addicts worth spending any money to try and save their lives with a public health campaign. Not to mention some of his other negative comments about transgendered folks. His unwillingness to fund Pride or Caribanna is because they're for "special interest groups". Ford isn't talking about spreading around funding from Pride to other festivals like you suggest, he's saying there will be no funding for LGBT community events of any sort when he says you either fund all events or none of them since he surely isn't about to fund them all with his penny pinching ways. The thing that really separates Pride and Caribana from the Santa Claus and other parades is that these events bring in many millions of dollars to the city while the other parades do not, besides which neither Pride nor Caribana is just a parade. Anyways by cutting funding for Pride and Caribana Ford will be reducing the amount of money these events bring into the city since they won't be able to afford to advertise as much or to have the same sort of events they used to with the funding which will mean fewer attending and less money for the city, it will likely take a few years for attendance to drop much though since the memory of last years events draws many but as the events shrink due to lack of funding they will lose more visitors and money every year. This is just one example of how Ford's effort at saving money will end up losing the city more money than it spent funding these two events.

re: Smithermen and Pantalone
People aren't moving over to Smitherman just to protect funding for Pride but to also save our city from the disaster that would be Ford as mayor. Toronto is a very successful city and has been doing very well during the past ten years, we're constantly ranked as one of the top cities to both live in and do business in N. America. City building and city maintaince takes money that Ford isn't willing to spend, our infrastructure repair is in a serious backlog and needs to be enlarged not cut or else we run the risk of Toronto becoming less livable and less attractive to businesses, especially international ones since Toronto competes internationally and not with Hamilton or Burlington or where ever. Toronto needs to have the sort of infrastructure and city building that rivals places like NYC, Paris, Barcelona and Berlin among others. Those cities have been spending much more building their cities yet Toronto has still managed to hold its own, its transit needs are immense and have suffered greatly from decades of neglect, Ford's cutting spree and cancellation of Transit City, the best transit plan this city has seen in a very long time, to be replaced by a bit more subway only in Scarborough will set us back even further, improved transit is needed all over the city but there isn't the density to justify subways in most parts outside of downtown, the bit of subway Ford is planning will serve a tiny number of people who need improved transit now and which TC will provide throughout most of the city in a financially responsible manner. Ford's wide ranging cuts and tax cuts will mean less services and less infrastructure improvement at a time when we need more, not less of them. We would survive Ford but it would greatly delay the sort of city building our city needs and put us in a much less competitive situation internationally.

AIDS is still a gay disease in Canada. So what?
Randy, Ford is a bull in a china shop, but his observation that AIDS is largely a disease of gay men and drug users is factually supportable, at least in North America. The problem is when this is used as a rationale to cut funding to AIDS prevention programmes. I know upwards of 100 people with HIV/AIDS, and two caught it from blood transfusions, the others from sexual activity or intravenous drug use (or both together - they are natural companions). It makes sense to spend the money on interventions for men having sex with men and drug users, while not ignoring the other modes of transmission altogether.

Smitherman ? NOPE
Who in their right mind would vote for a man with the track record of George Smitherman ? This guy wasted more millions of our tax dollars while in the Provincial Liberal Govt with basically zero to show for it - E-HEALTH SCANDAL comes to mind. To think that this guy wants to run Canada's most populated city. I don't care even 1 percent that he's gay. I'd never vote for someone as irresponsible with OUR money as George Smitherman has been during his political career. How many of those wasted millions of dollars could have gone to fund programs that could have had a positive impact on the lives of the elderly, the sick, the under employed, the unemployed, etc. I wouldn't have Smitherman run a cold drink stand in the middle of summer because he'd probably find a way of screwing that up.

Jeff, from another ex-Vancouvite...
Jeff, the only reason to vote for Smitherman is that he is marginally better than the alternative, Rob Ford, a homophobe who has gone after funding for AIDS service organizations in the past. I would never vote for someone just because he's gay, and I'm not this time. It has nothing to do with that. The third candidate, who has been on council three decades with little to show for it, is so far behind he offers no workable alternative and isn't worth the gamble. We're really screwed that it's come down to these options. I've never been so disgusted with my choices. But I will vote, and I will vote against Ford. Then I'll probably go home and stick my finger down my throat and cry myself to sleep.

Re: Ford returning calls...
Many good points in the article and in the comments. But I'd like to commend the writer specifically for calling Ford's bluff on his constant claim that "I return all my calls." B.S.!! Many months ago, very early in the campaign, I emailed his office asking about his stance on certain issues. I sent two follow-up emails asking for reply. I never received a reply to ANY of my queries. So, among the many things that bug me about Ford, his constant claim about returning "all" his calls really annoys me. I'm sure it's impossible for a politician to return every single call, which is why it's so ridiculous on his part, but he keeps repeating it-- and it's not true! As has been reported elsewhere, one person received a letter from Ford saying "Insert vague response on policy." SO... even if you do get a reply, if it's not an error (!) you will get some 'vague' policy speak. Which sounds like exactly what this reporter got when he finally was able to ask a few questions. Ford, UGH!

re: pot against Methetamine
Jake its clear from your confused use of drug terms that you don't know what you're talking about, regardless the big difference between Smitherman and Ford in their drug/alcohol usage is not that one drinks and smoked pot and that the other was addicted to a party drug, we don't know which one for sure btw and its clear you have no first hand knowledge of his drug usage, anyways the difference is that Smitherman beat his addiction and has been living clean and sober since having done so and he admitted openly to his past addiction problems while Ford clearly has some sort of anger problem that seems to be related to his drinking he has done nothing to improve himself or his lifestyle and has denied everything up to the point of of being shown proof that he was lying and when shown evidence that he was charged with a dui he continued to lie claiming that he was only charged with failing to provide a breath sample. Smitherman overcame his problems and was open and honest about them, Ford can't admit he has any problems, he lies and denies constantly and has nothing to improve himself or his lifestyle, unless it was very very recent considering his alcohol related anger issues have been relatively recent. It takes an awful lot of hard work and personal determination and a strong character to overcome a drug addiction, its a very hard thing to do and it involves changing yourself for the better by creating a new healthy lifestyle for yourself. That's the sort of character that would make for a good mayor and is far more respectable and honourable than Ford's constant lieing and denying, especially considering that no one would know about Smitherman's past drug problems if he hadn't openly admitted to it without being forced into doing so. There is much to criticize Smitherman for, overcoming a drug addiction isn't one of them
