Catholic doctrine bullies queer youth: expert
FEATURE / Study on homophobia in Catholic schools wins Governor General's medal

When Tonya Callaghan was a teacher at a Calgary Catholic school in 2004, a young gay student at her school killed himself. The tragedy changed the course of her life forever.

Callaghan quit her job, deciding, as a queer woman, she could no longer live in the closet. She went back to university determined to find out why Catholic schools are such “hotbeds of homophobia.”

“The reason is because of Catholic doctrine that directs all the policy and practice in those schools regarding sexual minority groups," she says. "The doctrine flies in the face of the laws of the land and Canadian equality rights.”

Callaghan’s PhD research at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, entitled "Holy Homophobia: Doctrinal Disciplining of Non-Heterosexuals in Canadian Catholic Schools," caught the attention of the Canadian Association for the Study of Women and Education (CASWE), which honoured her with its doctoral award for outstanding dissertation. She presented her work at the group’s conference in Waterloo, Ontario, on May 30.

Callaghan's work also earned her the Governor General's Academic Gold Medal.

The five-year study compared Catholic education in Alberta and Ontario, looking specifically at the experience of students and teachers. Callaghan interviewed 20 people, sometimes multiple times, and generated an enormous amount of data. She says that in the national movement to eradicate faith-based homophobic bullying, Ontario is ground zero.

“My study finds students are leading this revolution,” she says. “That’s not to say the queer teachers aren’t trying. I was a queer Catholic teacher myself once. I tried to do what I could from within the system, but teachers' hands are tied. Many are being fired.”

The former Catholic teacher says she didn’t wait for the school to fire her. After the suicide of the promising Grade 12 drama student, who suffered months of homophobic bullying, she resigned.

“He did seek guidance at school,” she says. “The counsellor gave him the Catholic party line: ‘It’s okay to be gay, just don’t act on it. And if you do act on it, you’re a sinner.’ This boy was being bullied. He asks for help and gets more bullying from the guidance counsellor.

“That’s why the Pastoral Guidelines to Assist Students of Same-Sex Attraction are so dangerous. The bishops insist that the document be taught to everyone, especially guidance counsellors, and disseminated to students. They say ‘same-sex attraction’ because they want it to sound like an illness, which is why you need ‘pastoral care.’”

Based on the Catholic catechism, the Pastoral Guidelines are the primary counselling resource used by Catholic educators. The guidelines state that gay people are “intrinsically disordered” and “gravely depraved.” Callaghan says the doctrine is like bullying to queer youth.

Likewise, teaching at a Catholic school was difficult, she says. “I was out before, so it was a big deal for me to go back into the closet to take a teaching job.

“Minute by minute I experienced homophobia in that school, every single day. Slurs in the hallways. I was a young woman, so I constantly got asked, ‘Where’s your boyfriend?’ ‘Why aren’t you married?’ Constantly. It was a really hard experience to have to hide all the time.”

For most teachers, getting fired is not an option. Teaching jobs are scarce, so queer teachers keep their heads down, don’t talk about sexuality or gender and endure the homophobic jokes, she says. “Teachers have a lot to lose if they try to take on the system.”

Callaghan’s research is a collection of firsthand accounts. There’s the story of a gay Toronto-area teacher who was fired in 1998 after the school hired a private investigator to spy on his backyard marriage ceremony. Another participant, a straight teacher in Calgary, was fired in 2004 after she defied her principal by creating a safe space at school for queer students to eat lunch without fear of being bullied.

Callaghan also interviews Jan Buterman, the trans man from Edmonton who was fired when he told his school principal he was beginning transition. Buterman was told his “values were not in line with the Catholic Church.”

“When they’re fired, teachers are blindsided,” Callaghan says. “They are focused on staying monetarily afloat and getting another job. They usually don’t have the means to launch a legal challenge.”

Many student participants told Callaghan that when they disclosed their sexual orientation or gender identity to guidance counsellors, they were outed to their parents, she says.

“Catholic doctrine states that the parent is the number one educator of the child,” she says. “This is consistent behaviour. Schools want the parent to know about [the student’s] sexuality, if they don’t already, because they want the parent to correct it. That’s what they are hoping for, that parents will send their child to reparative therapy.”

Many students Callaghan spoke with were kicked out of their homes, often when school authorities outed them, she says. “We know quite a few homeless youth are LGBTQ, and a large number of those come from devoutly religious families.”

Since it was revealed in 2011 that the Halton Catholic District School Board banned GSAs, and the board chair compared them to Nazi groups, Callaghan has been closely watching the fight in Ontario. She  applauds the provincial Liberals for writing a law in support of students.

“I’m really happy about Bill 13. It sets a great example for the rest of the country,” she says.
Mississauga Catholic students and GSA activists Taechun Menns and Leanne Iskander when they first went public to Xtra in January 2011.
(Andrea Houston (file photo))

She is also reaching out to GSA students, like Mississauga’s Leanne Iskander, to offer support. “I like to see the students push the administration. Put up a rainbow poster. See what happens. What’s wrong with rainbows? What's wrong with the word gay?”

“For Catholic administrators the word gay is affirming sexuality that is non-heterosexual. They don’t want the clubs to be affirming. They don’t want students celebrating their identity.”

That’s why it’s vital that GSAs be established in Catholic schools, she says, because queer students are often completely cut off from supports, like the LGBT Youth Line and local queer youth groups.

“They don’t know supports exist. They are not hearing about it at schools, they’re not hearing about it from their parents, they’re not hearing about it from their church, so how are they going to know? Queer youth who suffer the most come from faith-based homes. That’s why gay-straight alliances are absolutely essential.”

With Bill 13 in place, Callaghan says, legislators should now turn their attention to the content of GSAs, start questioning Catholic doctrine and have a public debate about whether it should be taught in publicly funded schools.

I think Canada is ready for this kind of discussion, to start looking at the limits of religious freedom,” she says. “When certain religious beliefs call for the suppression of human rights, that’s when we have a problem. We currently have that problem in Catholic schools here in Ontario, as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan. Even in British Columbia, which has private Catholic schools. We will have to address all private religious schools as well, eventually.”

How does a doctrine bully?
People bully, not ideas. Catholics believe in a heaven and a hell and a day of judgement. Those in a state of hardened mortal sin send themselves-by their own free will and actions-to hell. It's God's will that you attain heaven and your so-called enemies the Catholics are trying prevent that you should lose eternal life. We pray for you and yes, we love you. You wonder why the demonic vitriol hurled by the gay community to Catholics who proclaim the faith doesn't affect us. It's because the stakes are so much higher than anything in this world.

Religious accommodation of all faiths is a problem
Good article, but let's not be fooled. Catholic schools teach it's bad to be gay but so do Islamic and Jewish schools. Many in Islam preach it's okay to kill gays. And women in Ontario's public schools are being treated as second class due to Islamic law. Same old, same old.

Keep up the pressure!
As in every other century, the Catholic Church needs to be dragged kicking and screaming out of the Dark Ages and into a new century of human rights. One or two hundred years from now they will not only (have to) accept gays as humans, but the Church will portray itself as a leader in the fight for gay rights. (Note to digital archeologists of the future: See! I knew it would happen! But lest we forget the harsh truth.) (Same happened with slavery 150 years ago, and women's rights and the ERA more recently.)

That was the most "Rosemary's Baby" thing I've read in years. You ask "how does a doctrine bully?" What a strange thing to say. Can you really not make the connection between the beliefs and actions? And if there's no connection, then why bother teaching kids right from wrong? I can't believe I just wasted 3 minutes of my life on explaining the relationship between beliefs and actions to an adult (?). Mr./Ms. Woka: Are you forgetting that Catholic schools are 100% publicly funded whereas Jewish and Muslim schools receive no public dollars?

beginning of the end of religions' special rights
This is one of the most important moves forward for the LGBT movement in years. The real culprit of homo hate is religion. Let's name it and blame it. And finally the truth is coming out. Roman Catholicism is the culprit in the GSA issue, but all religions (Islam and evangelical Christianity to name two homo hating hysterics). Canada must remove all religion from public life. All religion must become a personal and private hobby. And like all hobbyists who own land and take in money, they must be TAXED! Step 1: Name religion as the culprit. Step 2: Proclaim that secular government and law supercedes any and all religions always. Step 3: Defund all RC separate schools and force merge with ordinary public school (and no religious accommodations at schools -- if kids have to pray they should stay home). Step 4: Rescind all laws that allow religions to operate (and scam) tax free -- full taxation of all religions (the evangelical mansions will be selling for pennies!). It's a start. Religion-free in public life by 2030!

@Stan Oh, I see... Beliefs and actions are one
I see what you mean now Stan. It's the Ideology, not the actions. It's the homophobic ideology that killed Matthew Shepard, just like it is gay ideology, with it's obsession with gender, youth and sex which ultimately killed Jesse Dirkhising. We want to listen to Tonya and blame the ideology for the actions of gay men like Luis Garavito, Huang Yong, Marcelo Costa de Andrade. Arthur Bishop, David Maust, Saul Betesh ad nauseum.

Thanks Adrienne, for further pointing out how fucking batshit insane you are. That you believe the actions of pedophiles somehow is part of the "gay ideology" is simply disgusting. You claim you Catholics love the homos: how about you stop branding us all as sex criminals? Or, how about you stop telling us we're going to hell for merely existing? Is your God so fucking twisted that he put homos on the planet for your kind to abuse and harass? But, who am I kidding, you're fucked up worldview isn't going to change to suit this this the rest of us call "reality." Again, Fuck Off And Die, troll.

I believe there ought to be a huge warning label (a la WHMIS) on every Catholic church's door with a picture of adreinne davidson on it, above it, the words: "WARNING: Religion can cause serious and irreversible brain damage. Proceed with caution."

Take a Zanax, Susan and Dan
I am pointing out, via a parallel argument, that Tonya Callaghan doesn't know what she's talking about. She presents a non-falsifiable (and therefore nonsensical) hypothesis that Catholic doctrine is homophobic; ergo, it is responsible for the death(s) of same-sex attracted youth. Well, you can't have it both ways, kids. If homophobia killed Matthew Shepard, then your opponents are going to claim (just as invalidly) that the obvious obsession with sex and youth which permeates gay culture bears some responsibility for the kidnap, torture, rape and killing of Jesse Dirkhising. Here's a more logical idea: Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson killed Matthew Shepard. Davis Carpenter and Joshua Brown killed Jesse Dirkhising. Everyone bears responsibility for their actions. Ideas, objects or people can't force you or I to do anything against our own free will. Our Catholic faith does not negatively affect you, nor does force you to think or do anything which you don't want to do. On the contrary, the Church freely offers-for those with the eyes to see and ears to hear, the remote possibility of being saved. End. of. story.

Maybe Wasting My Time Trying to Reason...
These are the people kids have been taught to trust, telling them that they are "disorderd" and "depraved" because of their immutable homosexuality. Now of course that is homophobic and will negatively affect their self-esteem. You can't just dismiss it all as free will and no force is ivolved with an idea. No one is forcing you to promote an idea to youth that they are depraved if gay, and ignore the logic that it is harmful to them. Not all ideas are equal and ideas can cause social harm. There is no "obsession" with sex and youth in gay culture. That's just your subjective prejudice talking, Adrienne. The popular media celebrates heterosexuality and heterosexual youth, everywhere. It always has. When young heterosexual celebrities are sexualized, the main target market is other heterosexuals. When young men are sexualized for other men you take more notice because it is so comparitively rare and regard gays with suspicion. Rapes and murders have nothing to do with sexual orientation, gay or straight. There's no reason to mention it, other than a desire to be a diversionary troll. Stick to the issue. There is logical reason to not teach that a certain group of youth are depraved and disordered. Yes, you can say they don't have to remain a part of the religious sect with its appeals to ignorance and fear. It will still be harmful while they trust that authority, as they are conditioned to, from a very young age. It's perplexing how any thoughtful adult could respect an alleged being of so-called supreme intelligence, who requires an unquestioning and insincere obedience, just to save one's own ass. Yet this seems to be the completely hollow and self-serving reason the anti-gay religious people keep bringing up.

This is what intrinsically disordered actually mea
The Catholic Church has never stated that same-sex attracted persons are depraved or intrinsically disordered. In fact, the Church refuses to consider the person as a heterosexual or a homosexual and insists that every person has one fundamental identity: as a creature of God and, by grace, his child and heir to eternal life. The Church's moral suasion concerns actions, not thoughts, feelings or desires, so only homosexual acts are considered intrinsically disordered and immoral. It's "intrinsically disordered" because it's evil in and of itself, and cannot be mitigated by external factors. (i.e. theft is intrinsically immoral-ergo, you can't "morally" rob a bank because you're giving the proceeds to the poor).Physically, human sexuality is designed for procreation by the union of man and woman. Biologically it makes sense no other way. Human genitalia have no other purpose or meaning and their physical design is inexplicable apart from this. Further, the physical is a sign of the spiritual. The physical complementarity of man and woman indicates a deeper, spiritual complementarity. One-flesh unity is the body's language for one-life unity. Human sexuality is designed for the consummation and expression of that one-life unity of a man and woman. But along with that awesome gift comes great responsibilities, that is, moral norms follow. That is why it is immoral to use one's sexual faculty in any manner that violates the procreative/unitive essence of a man and woman in marriage.

I'm still not convinced
Sexual actions are an integral part of human sexuality and gay sexuality. The Pastoral Guidlines state that a call to lifelong chastity for those with a same-sex orientation is "extremely difficult" for them. Why do you think that is? Surely there is a convincing, logical reason which will convince them this simple choice, is the wrong one to make. It shouldn't be a continual, lifelong and "extremely difficult" struggle unless it stems from something very fundamental and powerful to a human person. The guidlines also recognize a genetic component. Where do genes come from if not the creator? It also states human bonds as one of the purposes of sex. Very little sex leads to procreation, even when trying it may not happen. Pleasure is also important. Body parts and things such in nature perform multiple purposes. Being gay and gay actions do not act against nature and biology. The trait and actions continue to survive and be seen in other species. Research has shown evidence of a genetic component. It's shown, that for male homosexuality at least, having gays in the family increases fertility along the female line. I don't see how making another mouth to feed is a moral value. That would mean the more one procreates the more moral one is. I could argue that gay sex is better because every pregnancy is planned and wanted. How is an "accidental" pregnancy morally superior?

@Clint Change is difficult: as is the narrow path
You are right, change is difficult but it is very possible-and those who doubt a homosexual can become heterosexual, marry, have a family, live a good life with the real hope of eternal life have not factored in the enormous help that God's supernatural grace makes on the person who opens their heart up to God, through Jesus. I'm a convert and in our church are two friends, one a former gay man and a hard core activist, who is now heterosexual and now happily married. The other is a former lesbian who is now happily married and is the author of the fantastic book "Sexual Authenticity.". Both help others overcome those with unwanted same sex attraction. If you read their blogs (Alan Yoshioka and Melinda Selmys) you'll find two intelligent, gracious souls who offer love and support for those suffering from homosexual brokenness. I know they will move heaven and earth to help anyone who contacts them for spiritual guidance.

Adrienne, you attention-seeker you...
It's only very recently that the Catholic Church has softened its dogmatic stance against homosexuality (though it still has a long way to go). Catholicism has long held a vendetta against the gays. Don't you know "faggot" means "a bundle of sticks", and gays are called fags because so many were burnt at the stake by the holy fathers? Also, saying homos can easily be converted to hetero reveals your ignorance of all the studies stating otherwise. You, my dear, are blinded and deafened by your fanaticism; but unfortunately not dumb. Be a good little Catholic and go away and pray or something.

Human Right to Sodomy and AIDS?
Where does it say that one has a human right to have sodomy with another man? And why is the Roman Catholic Diocese presenting the Pro Homosexual Rhetoric ? If queer youth would have listened to the Catholic Church many of them who died from AIDS would still be alive today.
