Queer Canadian couple attacked in Paris
NEWS / Homophobic and transphobic insults shouted while children watched

Two Canadians are in a French hospital after being targeted in an attack that has been described as transphobic and homophobic.

Montrealers Marie-Eve Baron and Claire Giroudeau were in Paris for a two-week vacation with their young girls, one six, the other seven, when they were attacked by two motorists. Speaking to French gay and lesbian website Yagg, the couple said the incident started after a car cut them off in downtown Paris.

Baron, who was driving, honked in surprise. The other car pulled alongside them and the couple inside spat on the Montrealers when they rolled down their window. The two started spouting anti-gay and anti-trans slurs, calling Baron “a man with his balls cut off” and insulting the couple because they are Canadian.

Montrealers Marie-Eve Baron and Claire Giroudeau were attacked in front of their two children.
As Baron and Giroudeau’s children watched from the backseat, the man kicked Baron violently in the face. He threw her to the ground, punching her in the face, then rounded on Giroudeau when she tried to intervene. The attackers also rolled down the windows of their car so their pitbull and rottweiler could threaten the couple.

Baron and Giroudeau fled before the police arrived.

“Nobody came to help us!” Baron posted on her Facebook page

The couple isn’t holding out hope that the police will be much good. “The police tried to blame me by saying that I got out of my vehicle,” Baron said.

The two spent seven hours in hospital but don’t appear to have any lasting injuries.

Baron says that they are deeply shaken by the incident and that it’s destroyed their image of the French capital. “This city is cold and cruel; it lacks humanity and civility,” she writes. “We miss Quebec and we’re proud to be from there.”

Dany Morin, associate NDP LGBT critic, has called the attack a “wake-up call.”

“The fact is, a transgendered person is reported murdered somewhere in the world every three days,” Morin said in a statement.

Were these French Muslims?
A lot of European cities are becoming dangerous places for gays and women and Jews because of Muslims living in the cities in huge numbers. Bruce Bawer writes of this fact as do others. I'd like more details about the attackers rather than calling them simply "French." Yes, Paris is a very divided city. And it burns at night in the suburbs from cars being set afire. Read about that if you're interested.

Why Muslims?
I have never in my Life heard of muslims attacking anyone in europe, its always the extremist christians that are hompophobic, I think the muslims are discriminated against as it is and dont need to initiate more trouble towards themselves. I have on the other hand heard of muslims being attacked constantly in europe.

Read about gays threatened in Europe by Muslims
David, you don't get out much. There are NO fundamentalist Christians in Europe to speak of. In any case, read these two articles about the growing threat of Muslims to gays in Europe. http://www.queerlife.co.za/test/gay-opinions/31-opinions/643-gay-europe-is-warned-about-muslim-sharia-law.html http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/ezra_levant/2010/10/08/15630946.html

Islam is the Biggest Global Threat to Gays
"I have never in my Life heard of muslims attacking anyone in europe." David,London Wow, another leftist liar. Big surprise. How long has it been since that muslim in France gunned down that Jewish school girl? More proof the left will stop at nothing to bury the truth, including throwing gays under the bus.

I didn't realize we were passing judgement.
That's a pretty quick jump to conclusions. Paris (as with many places around the world) has had some pretty transphobic incidents and homophobic people of all stripes. And also trans- and gay-positive people of all stripes. When I first started my transition, the only people in my apartment building to support me was a family of Iranian expat Muslims who offered to protect me if anyone gave me any trouble. So I for one am not interested in conflating all Muslims with homophobes, and vice versa, or playing into Steynian fearmongering about a demographic winter.

it was woka and ron who did it
Yup I have no doubt that woka and ron went to Paris to assault this couple, after all they're both far right social conservatives who hate Canadian society since it welcomes people from all over the world, even Muslims, and treats everyone as equal under the law. Just look at how they try to deflect blame for their crimes on to others, a sure sign of guilt. So obviously it was them who attacked this couple for being LGBT Canadians, even worse they're French Canadians and one of whom appears to be trans. I've heard more than enough rants from ron against trans people and Quebecers and woka's comments are full of hatred and anger. They definitely seem the sort to attack two lesbians and I have just as much proof they did it as they have proof that French Muslims did it. Its so obvious woka and ron are responsible for this crime, after all ron lives in a city that's had riots before, woka? who knows since he's too cowardly to even indicate the city he lives in but I bet whatever unfortunate city that may be they've also had riots at some point or another. What more proof does anyone need? The fact that woka and ron aren't in jail right now just proves how the bleeding hearts have taken over our justice system and are ruining Canada by insisting on evidence. Right thinkers like ron and woka don't need no evidence, they've both made that clear in their previous comments. Surely they'd support being arrested and preferably deported from Canada for their crimes, even they know opinion is better than facts or evidence. Just look at how much hate crimes against LGBT people have increased since they were born. Its pathetic how the bleeding heart lefties running our society overlook such proof. woka and ron are very dangerous to queers, French Canadians, and lefties and must be stopped before they take over the world.

Attackers
In the account from the couple, they didn't seem to mention the attacker's nationality. I was under the impression they were French/Caucasian. Jumping to conclusions and blame a race/religion probably isn't responsible.

my experience in Paris
I lived in Paris for one year recently during my transition as a trans woman. I experienced numerous issues there including workplace harassment and people pointing and laughing at me on the street. I also observed some street harassment against other queers. In *all* of these cases, the perpetrators were white caucasians, without any exceptions. Now, I wouldn't be surprised to find out there are issues for a young queer Muslim kid growing up in the Banliues, but that having been said let's not go around blaming people for shit they did not do. Further, I can't help but note that BOTH "woka" and Ron have themselves made transphobic, trans-misogynistic comments on other stories here on Xtra... so I think that's a pretty weird thing when they show up here and suddenly pretend to care about a queer trans woman and a queer (presumably) cis woman getting assaulted in Paris, just because they think they can get away with blaming it on the Muslims without any evidence whatsoever. Hypocrites!

Well, were they Muslim or not?
Until we know with certainty the ethnicity/nationality of the perpetrators, I think we have to assume that factors other than homophobia and transphobia were probably involved.

Disgusted
This was a horrible crime no matter what the religious beliefs of the perpetrators. Some of you posters should be ashamed of yourselves, co-opting people's revulsion over the attack to fuel your Islamophobic agenda. Whatever. Marie-Ève, I'm horrified by what you've gone through - both the attack and the aftermath - and wish you and your family all the best.

Marie-Ève Baron and Claire ,
I'm so sorry for what you and your children endured. I wish you a speedy recover. I am sorry that the police officer you encountered was so negligent and victim blaming. I also hope you can blaim this hateful violence on your offenders and not on their religon, ethnicity, or country. My heart goes out to you and your children.

why did you get out of your car
How did the victims get outside of their car to be attacked? Why did they not roll up the windows and lock their doors and just drive away? Why did you get out of your car?

stop with the victim blaming
Can you stop with the victim blaming crap? If you read the French version, it seems that the altercation started after the attackers cut them off on the road. Apparently one of the two women who were attacked got out of the car to discuss the road incident, and that's when things really took a turn for the worse. In any case, getting out of your car is not a crime; kicking someone in the face and intimidating them with dogs however *is* a crime.

something odd about this story
Savanahh, if someone spat in my window, called me homo or trans phobic slurs, I would NOT in any circumstances get out of my car especially if my young children were present. I would lock the door and window and drive to the nearest police station. Getting out to "discuss" the situation with people spitting on you and calling you hate slurs, was incomrehensible. The story does not add up to me.

Woka's trans hate is real
Additionally, I am going to stand behind my criticism of the two trans-hating trolls "ron" and "woka" above. For example, there is this Xtra! story on which Woka makes multiple comments attempting to conflate trans women going to the washroom, just like any other woman, with sexual predators: http://www.xtra.ca/public/National/Conservative_MP_links_trans_people_and_sexual_predators-11803.aspx

Road Rage
Sounds like just road rage to me. The gay slurs would have been racial slurs if they were black. They would have been anti-american slurs if they were Americans. Etc.

go read the original story
"curious" AGAIN, go read the original story in French; it makes the timeline of events more clear. Apparently the name calling and spitting started *after* they got out of the car to discuss the road incident. As for it just being road rage, you don't know that and you have no evidence what would have happened under different circumstances.

Well?
It's quite common for Muslims to insult and even attack homosexuals in Paris. Everyone who has lived there, or even visited there for a few weeks, knows to be very careful. Is it Islamophobic to point this out?? It's something obvious, like saying the Jamaican community in Toronto has a problem with gun crime. Indeed, the conflict between Muslims and gays is a problem in many European cities. If these attackers were Muslim, then THIS IS NOT NEWS AT ALL.

@ David in London
Since you live in London, let's restrict it just to the UK (but you can find links on this for every city in Europe with a large Muslim population): ---- http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/may/07/muslims-britain-france-germany-homosexuality ---- http://www.huffingtonpost.com/johann-hari/can-we-finally-talk-about_b_828037.html ----- In September 2008, a young gay man called Oliver Hemsley, is walking home from the gay pub the George and Dragon when a gang of young Muslims stabs him eight times, in the back, in the lungs, and in his spinal column. In January 2010, when the thug who did it is convicted, a gang of thirty Muslims storms the George and Dragon in revenge and violently attacks everybody there.

An opportunity for Savannah and QuAIA
Savannah, I realize that you often make postings against woka and ron for their comments against homophobic Muslims and QuAIA. As a transgendered member of QuAIA, you have an opportunity to show up woka and ron this coming August 18 at Queen’s Park during the rally for International Al-Quds Day. The rally will be a demonstration against Israel. See: http://www.torontosun.com/2012/08/09/controversy-over-al-quds-day-at-queens-park You and other LGBT supporters of QuAIA could go to the rally holding your Queers Against Israeli Apartheid banners and signs and wearing your Pinkwashing wife beater shirts. See http://quaiatoronto.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/photo.jpg You could even take your sign that states (quote) The beautiful trans woman holding this sign is against Israeli apartheid and queerer than you (end of quote). See: http://eyecrazy.blogspot.ca/2011/07/al-qaaia-takes-new-name-and-suicide.html. Since you and other QuAIA supporters hate Israel with the same passion as those who will be present at the Al-Quds Day rally, I assume you will be welcome. Then you will be able to show woka and ron that LGBT people can flaunt it around radical Muslims without being taunted. If I’m wrong, the television and video cameras present will likely restrain any homophobe from taunting you – since the tape will provide the police with evidence of any hate crime.

"opportunities"
Daniel, why don't you go hang out with the right wing Orthodox extremists settlers in East Jerusalem, see what they think of homosexuality? I've interacted with them before and I assure you, if you are actually queer, they will hate you very much. Or for that matter, go spend some time with York's own homophobic police chaplain Rabbi http://www.xtra.ca/public/Toronto/Police_back_scriptural_reading_gays_an_abomination-9731.aspx Of course, in reality I have no desire for you to do these things because I actually would be concerned that you might get hurt (again assuming that you are actually queer). The majority of these religious extremists are assholes in case you haven't figured that out yet. But you see Daniel, despite the fact that you link to a hate-filled article (that is written *BY* a religious extremist) that calls me violent, absurd names, I still don't wish any harm on you Daniel. At this point, I just wish I could say that that sentiment went both ways.
