'NO COMMUNITY WITHOUT UNITY.' Participants in the 2008 Calgary Pride Parade march down Stephen Ave. This year's parade takes place Sun, Sep 6 at noon, see pridecalgary.ca for details.

At this Sunday's Pride parade in Calgary, gay restaurant owner Jason Wheeler plans to make a statement about the divisions in the local queer community.

'There's no community without unity' is the theme of his business' float. But otherwise, Wheeler is trying not to get caught in the war of words between Sam Casselman, head of the Pride committee, and RJ Fafard, owner of Calgary's biggest gay bar, Twisted Element.

"I stay out of the politics," says Wheeler, who runs a restaurant called Money Pennies.

A few days ago, Casselman went public with complaints about Fafard. She says he's been calling Pride sponsors and spreading what she calls "misinformation," including the suggestion that none of the sponsors are gay.

Wheeler hasn't been contacted by Fafard, but he's not surprised. "He wouldn't phone me," says Wheeler. "We're on two different pages."

Another sponsor, lesbian artist Lisa Heinricks, says she hasn't been called by Fafard, either. "Those guys at Twisted always try to cause a fuss," she says. "I just avoid the whole issue."

Still, Heinricks supports Casselman's decision to take on Fafard. "Absolutely," she says. "Somebody probably does need to."

One sponsor willing to take on Fafard's claims about Calgary Pride is Steve Polyak, owner of Gay Calgary newspaper.

"He feels he's the centre of the gay community," Polyak says of Fafard. He rejects Fafard's contention that this weekend's event should be called Straight Pride because of the Pride committee's willingness to accept straight-owned sponsorships.

"Why should we turn around and say no to straight sponsors?" Polyak asks. "Without that money, Pride would not be as successful. There's only so many gay dollars for the taking."

In his defence, Fafard points out that many gay-owned businesses, including his own, aren't entering floats in the parade. The other non-participants include Goliath's Spa and Texas Lounge, Priape men's wear and Outlooks magazine.

Andrew Brassard, co-owner of Goliath's Spa and Texas Lounge, says his business has only entered the parade once in the last few years. He says he's not a Pride sponsor because no one from the committee asked him to be.

"I don't have any problems with Pride," he says. But when it comes to sponsorships, he doesn't feel businesses should make the first move. "I'm not gonna call you to give you money," he says. "You call me."

He doesn't agree with Fafard's assessment that straight-owned businesses — like the nightclub Belgo, which is hosting this Saturday night's fundraiser — should avoid Pride. "Money doesn't have a sexual preference," says Brassard, who is straight. (His two business partners are gay).

Jim Heaton, manager of Calgary's Priape store, agrees with Brassard that straight money and support should be accepted by Pride. He was approached about being a sponsor but declined because, he says, "the levels of sponsorship they were asking for were out of my reach at the time."

Likewise, the store isn't entering a float in the parade because Heaton feels it costs too much to design one, pay the entrance fee and put it on the road. "It's not appropriate to spend that kind of money," he says, in light of the recession and the fact that his staff salaries have been frozen.

Heaton offered to sell tickets to the Pride fundraiser at his store, but no one from the committee dropped them off. "They're in a learning mode," he says.

Brett Taylor, owner of Outlooks magazine, agrees with Heaton's assessment of the organizers. "It's a young Pride committee," he says. "They're trying what they think is the best thing to do."

By that, he means this: "They're modelling it after larger Prides, which is difficult for a community that hasn't had a large Pride and is working towards it."

No one from the Pride committee asked Outlooks to be a sponsor or enter a float in the parade, Taylor says, but he figures that's because Gay Calgary signed a deal for exclusive media rights (meaning no other publication can be distributed at official Pride events).

As far as the dispute between Casselman and Fafard, Taylor says, "I agree with some of it and only to a degree." But he's reluctant to get into details, except to say he doesn't have any problems with the venue of this Saturday's fundraiser. "Anything is a step up" from last year's fundraising dance at a community centre, he says.

Hardly News Worthy
The community bitches! its what they do best! You can't count on them to come together, you can;'t count on them to cooperate... but sure as hell you can count on them to bitch! RJ hasn't done anything the rest of calgary has already done... its just that he's in a position of power ans Sam "going public" is just a waste of everyones time... get over it... your new... people are going to bitch no matter what you do. As a volunteer in the community you've offered to step up and set a better example to all the rest playing right into all this petty crap is not a leading by any example that should be followed. RJ is a business man and a community leader even if just by default. If you can't work with him ignore him... completely! but dont act all innocent if you bitch and moan and people bitch back.

Pride is for who?
Unless I have been living in a bubble...The whole meaning behind Pride Celebrations is to promote acceptance from the whole of Society? If this is to be true, then why not applaude the non gay businesses and people to want to be a part of the celebration. For many years PFLAG has been a big part of functions within the Community. Are they not straight people supporting gay lifestyle and community? It's time that this community needs to learn that if you want to be accepted then try being accepting.

This needs to come out
J, I do not think you realise exactly what RJ is doing. He has been actively working against Pride, he tells his patrons to boycott it altogether. It is one thing to publicly disagree with how it is being run, and it is quite another to actively work against the Pride planning committee. We need people to start wising up to RJ's selfish and destructive attitude. It has kept the Calgary gay community bitterly divided for too long. The sooner he no longer wields influence, the better.

Divions in gay calgary
Why as a new buisness owner in calgary was I warned off told to be carfull doing buisness with the Twisted element This by the owner of MPs Laurie. I use to go out weekends at the eagle and MPs prior to doing work for RJ. When word got out I was doing renos there I got the cold shoulder from the the eagle. who is causing this division here. If Twisted did not hire me I would have very few gay clients. I advertised in gay cal. mag. for months and never got calls form this "community" I am thankfull and proud for having Cliff and R.J as clients and friends. Why is it that pride commity did not contact me for support or help. I am a contractor.listed in gay calgary mag.... here is the answer I associate with The twisted element is why. The first time I went to a pride meeting I was with Cliff and RJ and we were forced to leave by members there. If this is how calgary's gay community is? good luck building a village. we should look to our neighbous Ex: Montreal Vancouver and Toronto where the gay community is thriving. They, unlike us they are building a village together. They dont bitch for months on end in the local gay rag about this guy or that guy. I know for a fact how successfull The twisted element bar is They have hired me for the past two years giving me $100,000.00 in work. I wonder if envy or jealosy is a factor? and I dont hide behind a fake name or logo I am Mark Niewerth Owner of Reymark able Craftsman.

Seriously!??
I have been friends with Rj and Cliff for years and have also been a free agent in the community for years. These guys have opened their hearts to me and many others on countless occasions. Not once have I been asked to "boycott pride" or have heard anything come out of their mouths to that effect. People like to start rumours without proof and to me that is the very afront to defamation of character. Twisted isn't taking part in pride because of his own reasons and that is that as well as many other business have their reasons as well. I do take issue to this exclusive rights between both publications in Calgary however. Its Pride and therefore as always a public event so how can one be asked not to take part. Being as the rumor goes " banned from taking part" to me is in itself hateful and to me that isn't at all what pride is about. As a committee it should be better organized and everyone should welcome to take part, from the leathers to the Queens to the corporate gays and all in between and not be turned away or asked to leave a meeting. When you discriminate in your own community for any reason then what's left. Don't believe everything you hear from both sides peeps cause as homos, we should know better.

New Pride
For those of you that keep on about issues RJ's had with Pride Commities, and being told to leave. It is a completely NEW Pride Board. People stopped attending the AGM to vote on who would be on the board. Those that did show up, ended up shouldering the responsibility. Had NO pre conceptions of who TO and NOT to talk to and approach. DID infact approach RJ and Twisted. If others were NOT approached, it was merely because of not having information to contact people with. And in fact sent out hundreds hundreds of emails of the Pride Sponsorship package to all emails that they could track down of different companies. So to feel slighted because you were associated with someone in the past, has absolutely NO barring. It was like working blind in a new environment, not knowing anyone nor having contacts. So to say you were excluded and not approached for association, is infact VERY untrue.

For Real??
I have never been so disgusted by the words that are going around, back and forth, he said she said, in all my life. 1) This Reporter sucks, an article should be in one persons perspective and then another article highlighting the feelings of the other party. Not he said she said, because this is just causing more drama. 2) RJ and Cliff have been two of the most thoughtful, considerate, and kind hearted people I have ever met in my entire life. They have done so much for me as an employee when I 18, a current entertainer, and a friend. They do a LOT for this community throughout the year, and most importantly, they supply us with a safe zone for us to have fun and be together year round. Not just on a single day of the year. 3) New pride board or not, it still has some of the same members on it from what I understand, (the worst two) Steve Polyak and Sig(Ciggarette or Eve L). I have no respect for either of them and I feel they play no role in leading this community in the right direction. 4) I visit all gay establishments on a regular basis, they are all very kind and have similar thoughts towards the pride board. If you are new and improved, show it, prove it, and get rid of the old members! Approach the gay businesses with the new ideas and plans. It should not be the owners having to approach you. 5) Everyone should have a great weekend!! This is all garbage and there is nothing that is going to change over the next 72hrs. After this weekend perhaps Sam and Dallas should approach members of the community, (old and new, business owners, entertainers, and just regular folks), for opinions and to arrange a new board if they shall continue to lead next year.

Defending Twisted...so cute...so unnecessary
Don't you realize that RJ & Cliff LOVE this kind of controversy? It's free advertising for them, & gets people talking about their bar. In private, the way they phrased it when Gay Calgary Mag published all those articles was "any publicity is good publicity". This wasn't a bitter lament, this was a triumphant laugh at Gay Calgary for falling for it. They pretty much want to keep it coming because it's good for them, & are constantly dangling the bate in hopes that Gay Calgary or someone else will bite. Sure they're going to whine & complain that they're being treated so unfairly, so that their staff & supporters will come to their rescue. It makes you feel good about yourself for defending the bar that you love. It brings you closer together so that you love them even more. Genius yes, but only commendable if you need that fear to drive you. I wouldn't be surprise if this whole asshole persona from RJ in his club is just an act to generate this sort of caffuffle. His comments in the article showed a completely different face, devoid of that infamous ego. They're REALLY cunning business people. He's probably pulling one over on all of us, both for & against him. If & when you show up to their events this weekend, you're going to see that this scandal hasn't negatively impacted them whatsoever. They may be even more busy than they would have been. They're going to call it a triumph of people pulling together despite what happened, & supporters are going to feel all warm inside from 'prevailing'. I just call it a clever form of audience participation - who needs daytime soap operas when you can be a part of it in real life eh? Even if you're against them, you're just pushing to further polarize other people in support of them. Only two days ago, people who were refusing to get involved in the situation have now taken a side. If the whole situation really distresses you that much, then be smart &

Pride Calgary Planning Committee 2009
Here is a list of the Pride Board Members this year, as this seems to be a confusing factor in this ongoing conversation. President: Sam Casselman Secretary: Dallas Barnes Treasurer: Ian Krell Media: Carly Hylton/Sue Bosley Volunteer Coordinator: Christy Nicholson Graphic Designer: Pam Rocker Director: James Demers Director: Kara Swanson Director: Doug Hass Director: Laura Black Calgary Police Liason: Constable Lynn MacDonald When approached with this article, we only wanted to make it known as to what was going on because there were a lot of rumours out there. We are all amazed at the response that it has been given. We are all following this dialogue and are dedicated to listening to it all. We do encourage you all to join our Facebook group and drop us a line at info@pridecalgary.ca with any questions/comments, etc. I can officially say that we have not BARRED anyone. This came to a head because of some sponsor exclusivity. Gay Calgary is our media sponsor. Outlooks wanted to have a booth and distribute thier magazine. As per our agreement with Gay Calgary we could not give them a booth as it would be a conflict of interest. You ever notice when you go to a restaraunt all they have is Pepsi products? This is because they have an exclusive deal with Pepsi. Well the same goes for Gay Calgary and Pride. Once we let Outlooks know that we could not give them a booth....the **** hit the fan, and it finally boiled down to what it is today. We as a Board want you to enjoy Pride weekend any way you want. We are all so passionate about our community, and are attempting.. with all that we have... to mend it somehow. We can't please everyone and we know this.. we are learning so much... believe me. We have made mistakes and we have made some great steps forward. We understand that we can not change what was done in the past, however we are trying to start fresh. All of our Board members are new to this Board. Pride Calgary is no longer. Pride Calgary Planning Committee

Part 2!
is who we are known as. We are registered as a Society, and are filling out our tax return next year like everyone else. We are all volunteers, and dedicated many hours a week to get this going. We love what we do. We love our community even more. We are not asking you to love us, we are asking you to give us a chance. Yes, we could be considered a young Board, however I really dont feel that young (36!) We have representatives on our Board from many aspects of the community. We do not have everyone represented and we know that. We have joined forces with many individuals in the community and taken what they have taught us. Some names that come to mind to thank are Steve Polyak and Rob Diaz-Marino from Gay Calgary for introducing to thousands of individuals and basically taking us under their wings. Johnathan Larson from the Calgary Eagle has been tremendous in assisting us with Fundraisers, moral support, and a shoulder to cry on. The ENTIRE staff at MP's for letting us use their space for meetings, giving us fundraising ideas, and being their to lend their ears. Jim Heaton from Priape has been our "reality check" in that he has supported us from the beginning but kept us grounded. Aargra for letting us crash the rodeo with crazy fundraising games and Pride Calgary membership canvassing. The Backlot and Texas Lounge for letting us come in and explain who we are and to let them know that we want to know them and be involved. Outlink for bringing us all together to discuss the community as a whole. Our allies, friends, and volunteers. THANK YOU!!! And yes even Twisted. Regardless of what is occuring at this moment, this situation has allowed us to question some of our motivations, and reevaluate what Pride is all about. It has also opened up this conversation to a level that is very needed in Calgary. Regardless of our differences, we all share a common bond. Figuratively we are FAMILY, and as a family of any kind we fight, and we make up. Let's Make Up! Ha

Pride in Calgary?
There is so much work needed here in Calgary for Pride to really be about being lesbian, gay, trans, bi or diversity in general and to be proud of ourselves. There are some real interesting things going on in Calgary that will speak volumes to the rest of Canada. Its a shame this scandal about a damn parade. Its all about money and who is in control isnt' it Calgary. The community needs to stick up for each other and get a real grip on what to be proud of. Calgary seems to be fostering gays who backstab each other in the name of control and money. When will we see there is something more important to evolve towards. WE ARE FAMILY, what a joke in Proud oil producing Calgary. The richest man wins and we all suffer their pride and closet control of the situation. Get a lawyer guys to sort out your own agendas otherwise we will see more families turning into "businesses", homes into "properties" and parents into "roommates". A rude awakening for all involved in gay affairs here in oil & gas central. Hopefully pride organizers will be more professional and on the ball and gay businesses will be proud to join the bandwagon and parade in future years. Until then you all seem to be on your own, Enjoy pride for what its worth these days.

Sponsorship
I was also constacted for sponsorship. The reason I declined was that the committee seemed to be unable to say where the money was going or provide an adaquate amount of information about the event. The committee should be prepared in advance of solicitation with a complete and comprehensive inforation package.
