Another bloodbath as Toronto's Proud FM fires four hosts
TORONTO / Station's programming director refuses to comment on firings, says it's a 'private' matter

Proud FM, the world's first commercial gay and lesbian radio station, has fired most of its major on-air talent. The morning show team of Deb Pearce and Patrick Marano and the afternoon team of Shaun Proulx and Mark Wigmore have all been let go following, Proulx says, the foursome's insistence on a joint meeting with station manager Bruce Campbell.

"We all wanted a meeting and we wanted it together," says Proulx, who says the group demanded "clarification" of "these different stories being told to us" but their power play ended in terminations.

This has happened before, of course — in November 2007, the station fired popular hosts Maggie Cassella, Richard Ryder and a number of staffers. In a June 2008 interview with Xtra, Cassella's then-producer Mark Wigmore recalled, "It happened really fast, there was no warning," while his new partner Proulx said, "It's a cutthroat business."

Bob Willette, programming director at Proud FM, would not comment on the firings, except to say that, "what happened is a private affair between Proud FM and the affected individuals. The differences are private in nature and won't be revealed by the company to the media at this or any other point."

That seems unlikely, as Proulx says he and the others plan a sit-down interview with Xtra in the coming days to discuss "the level of sleaze that has been a part of the station since we've all worked there."

"They have every right to talk," says Willette. "They can do whatever they like. Our stance is that this is a situation of a private nature, and we're not going to have any comment on it except that Proud FM remains dedicated to the LGBT community, and these changes to the on-air personnel aren't going to alter the orientation of the station."

"They wouldn't," says Proulx, as he plots a group response.

No Longer Proud FM
Deb and Patrick was the one thing that got me up and out of bed in the morning and put me in a fabulous moods with their bright energy and hilarious jokes. We listened to Deb and Patrick faithfully at work...but you can count us out from now on. Giant FM here I come!

The Radio Talent IS the Station...!
I am hesitant to place too much judgment without hearing the full facts, but I will say that I am dismayed at such a drastic change. These radio personalities become to some extent part of the public's routine, an extension to their each and every day lives... as one listens during their morning/afternoon commutes or while engaged in various activities, we invite them in as we would a friend. We are a community that no longer depends solely on a Church & Wellesley community, a topic that has been well discussed in just about every gay living room outside of the ghetto. While I may enjoy the connection with the community that a gay radio station offers, I have other prerequisites as well. Having a third party come in and tell me I may no longer spend my morning drive with some good friends that I have grown attached to(and then have the nerve to not even give me a reason?!) has done nothing to encourage any form of loyalty to the station. Perhaps it is time for me to re-unite with some old friends... Mad Dog and Billie... Roger, Rick and Marilyn... they were around before, and, funny enough, they still are...

Not surprised
After personal experience with the owners, I'm not surprised by the move after they teamed up against management. The owners (Evanov) run very cut throat approach with staff. Don't like our way.. There's the door.. is the view. I would recommend all staff that was let go, get an lawyer and ensure that they had the legal right to fire them... If it's like previous firings, they likely didn't. I personally won't be surprised after the power increase, that they just flip the station to repeat Z103.5 and bring it clearer into Downtown where it's currently week. And yes.. Evanov would..

Keep in mind ...
First of all - Maggie Cassella Rules! and when she was let go in 07, that told you everything about that station. Second - and here's why I'm commenting - let's understand that it is very unwise for ANY employer to tell the public why they chose to let someone go / terminate the employment of a staff or staff members. Third - FUCK PROUD FM

Looking forward to new PROUD FM
I've rarely listened to Proud FM as I find these 4 hosts to be utterly impossible to stand in person, so why would I consider listening to them on air? I'm hoping that they'll get some real talent and hopefully go a little younger, so that the station is a lot more relevant.

Change is inevitable
Station needs to re-energize itself with capable, more dynamic personalities. Glad that Pearse Murray was kept. I'm sorry to lose Deb but have no doubt she will land on her feet soon enough.

Not so Proud
Wow. It appears that transparency at Proud FM is punished. All workers have the right to question their employers if they feel the need for clarification and transparency. I'm not 100% sure of the laws but I would think that a matter such as firing four individuals because they wanted the above is wrong. Guess I can take 103.9 off my preset radio button. SHAME

Full STory not known
Companies on the cusp of making major changes rarely announce intentions until they determine the timing is right. That often leads to internal rumors and concern. That sounds exactly like what is happening at ProudFM. What most people forget is that it is against labour laws for employers to discuss detailed personnel matters, while the employees are free to sing like canaries. There is much more to this story than what is being said so far and we'd be foolish to believe these four are victims of a heartless company without knowing fully what has happened behind the scenes.

no longer a proud fm fan
All four will be missed but for me particularly Deb Pearce who made it worth tuning in, and was the station's main (only?) connect to women listeners. Without her, and given the 'cut off all their heads' kind of gesture, I will not be listening to proud fm anymore.

Proud Fm, gay themed entertainment & history
I've been a fan of this station since it began three tears ago. It's host gave it a persoanlity. When one of the best broadcasters left the show (about three years ago) I really missed her presence but still kept with it because the SPS Show had such depth and character to it, to me it was more than just a music station. Yes, the music matters but the conversations and topics were what made in interesting to me. I wish the station the best, but I can't promise I will tune in anymore with four fabulous hosts gone all at once. Regards, Derek

The hosts were the only good thing about ProudFM!
Music on ProudFM is shit. Reception in Toronto is even worse. The only reason I ever tuned into this station was to hear my favourite hosts talking. There is no longer a reason to listen to "Proud" FM. They should no longer be "proud" they should be ashamed of how they treat their employees.

Really not a big deal
The hosts really didnt have a lot of talent, they were boring and monotonous with very little likeability, Im surprised they lasted as long as they did, especially Pearce. Its nice of their friends to comment that they wont listen anymore when they rarely listened in the first place, now they can have fun meeting them at starbucks and listen to them whine. Looking forward to a good breakfast show with some intelligent commentary, political insight and musings about the community.

Redheads and cokeheads
Kat's comments are hilarious. Maybe she should be an on-air personality! I have to confess I have never listened to Proud FM, not even once. I heard it was all dance music and generic talk shows, and neither of those really attract me personally.

Let it Begin
Although it is a real blow( no pun intended) to the LGBT community to have these hosts no longer gonna be apart of our daily life, i cant really judge at this time Proud FM. I do not know the reasosn behind it, and i think noone can really say too much abou tit unless u know the facts. Proud FM could have had legit reasosn as to their decision, then again maybe not, but it will all come out in due time

103.9 Totally sucks
A newer station and trying to increase its listeners? Treat your staff like crap for as many years as the station has been around? I listen because I connect to the On-Air personalities. What incentive do I have to keep listening to them when they keep firing the little talent that they do establish over time? I won't be listening anymore.

Response from Proud FM
Hello Colin, Thank-you for your writing to us...Your feedback is very important. A number of reasons, series of events, thoughtful consideration and long deliberation contributed to PROUD-FM's recent changes with some of the on-air personnel. Please rest assured that Proud FM will continue to be Toronto's LGBT radio station for our growing listener base, our community partners and our advertising partners. Stay tuned. Listen every day
I listen to Proud FM at work all day, every work day, so over 8 hours a day since day one. I was surprised by the Maggie Casella firings but didn't complain as she was a little too off the wall for me. SPS was the best thing on radio, the integration in the community with Sean on gayguidetoronto and xtra was great, always timely discussions and guests. I really believe Mark Wigmore went above and beyond too, reviewing movies and interviewing people, I can't believe he was paid appropriately for all the extra work he put in above and beyond and it showed. They will not be able to find 2 hosts as dedicated to and integrated in the community. I miss them already.

I Agree with Mike, Looking Forward to A NEW PROUD
I too find these 4 hosts to be utterly obnoxious and impossible to stand in person, not to mention horrible tippers and customers (have served them many times). So why would I consider listening to them on air?

A Bunch of B.S.
Fire people is one thing but 4 at a time.. I totally don't agree with any of this.. many people have stopped listening to your station... We're all behind shaun proulx, patrick murano, mark wigmore, deb pearce... These people made the station productive, fun, and very enjoyable to listen too... You'll have many people gone now .. Good luck with continuing on you'll need it....

whats the real issue?
I left a comment a couple days ago but feel compelled yet again to leave another one. I understand it must really suck for the 4 who were fired, i really can empathize with you really... However.... we as the fans of the 4 do not know the whole deal. I dont think it is fair to judge what has happened unless we hear officially from both parties involved. I think by making presumptions without knowing the full facts is ignorant. Unless we can hear it from the horses mouth.. then we have no room to speak about it especially negative things towards proud fm

No winners here
Like them personally or not, these 4 people were part of the fabric that makes Toronto special for the gay community. I don't know if the station has a grand plan to replace them... or if they are planning a format flip to leave the gay market segment... but the hodgepodge that is on air during the AM and PM drive time hours is a big step down, particularly from the Shaun and Mark show. I'm sure there is some drama and some business reasoning behind this move, but for the moment I think the listners are the losers in this one.

What Up Wit Dat
I listened on line a few times to Proud FM and found the music mix to be somewhat different but what I always found interesting was the lack of ad's. Did the community in Toronto support the station financially? Money makes the world go round and if they couldn't come up with the cash I can see why they are going "people-less", many mainstream stations have already gone that route. That being said I have heard that the owners of this station are real tools and in the end couldn't run a birthday party for half a dozen six year old's. I also find it typically "queeny" of people like "John" to post disparaging comments about the folks let go. "They don't tip well". Get over it girlfriend these people just lost their lively hood chances are good you may see even worse tips in the future.

Betrayal
I disagree with everyone who says you can't know anything unless you know all of the inside details. That's not true. When something reeks, you don't need to itemize the composition to know that it's garbage. What a shame. Jennifer

Saddened. Angry. Disappointed!
The hosts that were fired (Mark, Sean, Deb, & Patrick) were my absolute favorite radio personalities... ever! 'Feel like I've lost some good friends. I don't care for whatever the lame excuses are for the station has for firing 4 people at once. The fact is that the station has rid itself of its most interesting, candid, witty, and charismatic hosts and I no longer have a reason for tuning in.
