Alberta gets three new gay bars
NIGHTLIFE / Summer shakeup brings more nightlife options to queers in Calgary and Edmonton

Alberta's queer nightlife is seeing a number of changes with Play Nightclub in Edmonton closing its doors this month and three new gay bars on the scene.

Club Sapien in Calgary held its grand opening on July 29. The Junction is set to open in Edmonton on Aug 13, and a third gay bar, Flash, opened in Edmonton in May. Play will close on Aug 14.

CLUB SAPIEN - CALGARY

For the past several years, Twisted Element has been the only gay nightclub in Calgary — until now. This is one reason why Mike Gray has opened Club Sapien — to give the community choice, he says.

"We're trying to do our best to build the community," says Gray. "To be able to go to more than one place makes people come out more frequently."

At the grand opening, Club Sapien was lined up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. When its full-service restaurant opened last Monday, Gray says the bar "just got busier and busier."

"It was phenomenal," he says. "People just had absolute gratitude for a new place opening up, and I was shocked. We were happy to have people there and happy to be providing the service, but we didn't know how well received we'd be, and it was very touching, actually."

Most queer establishments in Calgary sent flowers to Club Sapien, welcoming the new bar to the city.

But the owner of Twisted, RJ Fafard, hasn't been as hospitable.

"We're still the only gay nightclub in Calgary," says Fafard, refusing to acknowledge that Club Sapien is queer and a nightclub. He refers to it as "a restaurant with a dancefloor."

"It's not a gay bar," he says. "It has a straight owner, and there's not even any Pride flags on it. There's nothing gay about it."

Gray confirmed that 100 percent of the ownership is queer and says the Pride flags he ordered haven't arrived yet.

Regardless, Fafard says Calgary's economy and the city's "fragmented" queer community can't sustain two gay nightclubs.

He points to when Twisted opened in 2004. Back then, Calgary was home to a dozen gay establishments, says Fafard, including two other dance bars — Detour and Boyztown. Only Twisted and a few gay lounges remain.

But Gray says he's already seeing people at Club Sapien who haven't been out in years.

"It used to be on a Saturday night some people were hesitant to go out because there were big lines and they never knew if they were going to get in or have fun, and now it's almost a guarantee," he says. "You can come out on a Saturday night and have two nightclubs within a couple blocks of each other to choose from."

He says it's a "win-win situation" for both Club Sapien and Twisted.

Club Sapien is open Mondays, 5-11pm, and Tuesday-Sunday, 5pm to close. It is located at 1140 10th Ave SW.

THE JUNCTION BAR & EATERY - EDMONTON

When the majority owner of Boots 'n' Saddles — Edmonton's longest-running gay bar — passed away in March, the bar closed its doors, leaving its regular clientele — mostly gay men — without a gathering place. Many started going to Prism, a lesbian bar.

Deborah Chymyshyn, co-owner of Prism, says everyone got along "just fine." They got along so well, that Chymyshyn and her wife, Tracey Smith, are opening a new, inclusive bar, the Junction, where Boots used to be.

"In creating the Junction, we wanted a space where it wasn't deemed the girl bar or the boy bar," says Chymyshyn. "This is for everybody."

The new space is more than double the size of Prism, which will be closing this summer.

"Everything's been moving along at lightning speed," Chymyshyn says.

The Junction will have a full-service restaurant where Garage Burger used to be (next to Boots), and it will be licensed to allow minors from 11am to 8pm. The menu will be a combination of what was served at Prism and Garage Burger in an old-style diner atmosphere to convey a nostalgic feeling.

Nostalgia is an important part of the Junction's vision, says Chymyshyn. To commemorate the past 30 years, a committee will gather memorabilia from Edmonton's queer community and assemble large collages on the walls.

"The whole idea of opening the Junction is to remember who we are, where we've come from, the path that we've taken up until now, celebrate where we are today... and then unite and build a future together," Chymyshyn says.

The name, Junction, was chosen to symbolize a coming together of the community, she adds.

The bar is already starting to book up, with a farewell party for Prism, a bear bash and a women's games night later this month.

"There's an excitement and a buzz going on that I haven't experienced in Edmonton," says Chymyshyn, "and it's so neat to be a part of all of that."

The Junction is located at 10242-106 St and will celebrate its grand opening on Fri, Aug 13 at 8pm.

FLASH & PLAY - EDMONTON

Dubbing itself "Edmonton's hottest new gay club," Flash opened its doors in early May and has been lined up on weekends ever since.

"I'm overwhelmed by the positive response by the gay community," says Jeannine Bjornson, owner of Flash.

After running straight bars for the past 12 years, Bjornson, who is bisexual, says she saw an untapped market in Edmonton for an upper-scale, gay nightclub and lounge in downtown Edmonton. When she found "the perfect location," she jumped on it, and flipped the space in three weeks.

"Word spread like wildfire," she says.

Tiny disco balls hang from the ceiling of the 250-capacity club, and the inside is covered in slate, rock and granite.

"I've heard over and over again that Edmonton has needed this for a long time," Bjornson says. "That's the thing with bars — straight or gay — whatever is new and flashiest is going to be hot. You've got to maintain it so you have longevity."

Bjornson says Flash hasn't taken business away from Buddy's — another queer nightclub with an established clientele — but she says it has affected Play, which opened two years ago and is closing its doors on Aug 14.

"My ownership is pulling out," says Corey Wyness, general manager of Play.

Play is owned by Oil City Hospitality, which runs several straight bars in Edmonton.

Wyness rejected the idea that Play is closing because of competition from Flash.

"The market was kind of on its decline already, and I know my ownership was thinking, 'Well, how can we change the concept a little bit or make it so we can get more people in here?'"

Wyness says the market has declined because queers don't go out as regularly as they used to. He says gay bars still serve an important purpose, but more queers are frequenting straight bars nowadays.

"We're living in an age, too, where a lot of our consumers like to go to the mainstream bars," he says. "They don't necessarily need a gay bar anymore all the time."

When Oil City changes the concept of Play, the new bar will still welcome queers, says Wyness, but it won't be targeted specifically to the queer community.

Meanwhile, Bjornson says she "couldn't be happier" with Flash.

This is the first queer nightclub that Bjornson has managed, and there's no turning back, she says.

"In 12 years, this is my favourite venue that I've ever done," she says. "The gay community has just been awesome."

Flash is located at 10018-105 St. Play will close after a final performance of the Saturday Night Live series in the ForePlay Lounge at 10220-103 St on Sat, Aug 14 at 8pm.

Wow, RJ is bitter!
Not hard to tell how threatened RJ is that a new bar has opened that could give him some competition. For someone who views a gay bar as an establishment that is negative towards straight people, that's rich that he's criticizing Club Sapien. He comments on Calgary's fragmented gay community and he's part of the cause. He needs to pull his head out of the 80s and get with the times. You can't treat half the community like crap and expect they should support you cause you're the only gay bar in town.

Laughable comments
Club Sapien is clean, friendly, and a comfortable place to spend an evening. Mr. Fafard's comments about it not being a gay nightclub are ridiculous. Why must a club need the pride flag hanging off every corner? Mr. Fafard's concept of a gay nightclub are overly stereotypical and cliché. I've been to Sapien, and I respect General Manager, Mike Grey; and he is one of the reasons why I will frequent this establishment.

Club Sapien
Club Sapian is NOT a restaurant with a dancefloor! It's a UPSCALE gay bar with food! Something Calgary NEEDED! Don't get me wrong, Twisted has been a fun place to go and party on the weekend, but EVERYONE was sooo sick of going to twisted! I've never seen half the people that come to Sapien at Twisted before! On opening night of Sapien, people I talked to said themselves they never came out anymore cause they were tired of going to twisted! Club Sapien is a awesome bar with awesome staff, and I will continue to go there!! Congrats guys on the success!!!

Flash
I am so happy Flash is managed by a bisexual female, as a professional gay man it is always upsetting and off putting to see managers of gay bars in their 40s use their position of authority to pick up teenagers as happens at Play and Buddy’s daily, so sad.

Can't we all just get along?
It is very unfortunate that the gay bars in Calgary can not get along like most other cities. They should be supporting each other and realizing more people go out knowing they can go from one to the other. I remember that exact time back in 2004/2005 when Mr. Fafard was cutting down the new Detour (Pulse) left and right within his bar up until the day it shut down, and 2 years ago when a bar tried to open in Inglewood how he helped to lead the charge to ensure a bar was not opened in that community. Well it is not too late Mr. Fafard! Positive change can happen now! We will see if he starts treating the staff and patrons from Sapien the same as he used to treat them or not very soon!

R.J. grow up
Dearest RJ, if anyone has disjointed this community and caused everyone to stop going out and resort to house parties it's you. Your demeanor and candor in this community leave much to be desired. GROW up and realize that everyone is sick of your bar and you. KUDOS to Mike and the fact someone finally stood up to you and created a space for people to enjoy themselves. Your comments RJ fully reflect what an ass you are.

Are we surprised?
One of the most ridiculous thing I can think of about a new Gay bar opening in Calgary, is for people to be unhappy about it. Well, yet again I don’t think any of us are surprised at the comments made by RJ Farfard, because as a gay bar in our community, Twisted Element is the crack that Calgary’s gay community has been falling through. Calgary’s GLBT community has desperately been in need of another Gay Club since the closing of Boyztown and Detours. Not only is it a new club, but it is one that caters to everybody and every kind of gay person. Unlike Twisted that has openly been seen as a club for twinks, and/or only the youngest members of the gay community, while shunning the others and treating them like lesser people. Instead of building up our community it has only taken away from it. I have been to Sapien several times since its opening, and am pleased with not only the beautiful décor, but also the staff, the food, the drinks, and the prices. Mr. Mike Grey has been –on all occasions that I have been there- nothing but very welcoming and pleased to have people come down to his new bar and have a drink with friends. This is a good thing for the community as a whole, because now people have a choice of where to go, and if they so choose, go to both! The petty comments and accusations are something that just needs to be ignored and looked on as being said because of fear, jealousy, and poor community spirit. Remember, those who point their finger at others will have two pointing back at them. Twisted has treated so much of the community so horribly that people have no reason to go back there now, and its obvious in Mr. Farfard's comments that he knows his bar is going to possibly be in trouble. Hopefully Twisted and Mr. Farfard take a few notes on how to be a good bar, or they, like bars before them, will be closing their doors. Would any of us be surprised or sad if that happened??? I won’t be.

Until we all get along
Calgary's gay scene will be nothing more then 2 drag queens with a shopping cart until people grow up and realize it's about "community" and stop the bad-mouthing and bickering. Everyone just grow up!

police state at Play
Play was horrible, i hated having my cigarette pack checked at the door, if i would of had a joint would i have been carted off in a paddy wagon? security checked our one females purse saying they were looking for 'weapons', i've been going out for 20 years and have never seen a knife fight in a gay bar, ridiculous! once inside things went from bad to worse, was told i had to check my lightweight summer jacket or would have to leave, it was part of my look! so i checked it but the whole vibe there was just wrong, my friends and i never returned.

"Fisted" Element Feeling Threatened!
RJ, you are arrogant! Rather than you show hospitality to a new gay establishment in Calgary, you'd rather stand in the corner, pout, make nasty comments, and show just how ignorant you really are! Feeling threatened that FINALLY your shit-hole club, "Fisted" Elememt, has some competition? Poor baby!!! I've been to your club and I would never recommend your establishment to anyone .. of course you have your die-hard twink regulars who think you're god but guess what buddy...you're not! Club Sapien IS your competition and I hope they kick your ass!!!!

Sapien
Being 45 yrs old and from the Montreal area, I know how to recognize a true "club" whether it be in Montreal, Toronto, New York City, London or Chicago, I have been to all these great cities. When I first moved to Calgary 5 years ago, I wanted to know where the "clubs" were to fulfill my need for good music and if Calgary has a sense of community attached to it. Neither of these needs were fulfilled. Twisted Element, the Bunker and the Eagle were basically the only options in a city of nearly 1 million people. Needless to say I have not gone out in 5 years unless I fly to one of the cities mentioned above. Then along came Sapien, with renewed hope, I checked it out...... Again, poor decision, it is Twisted Element (2) - same people, same bad music, I lasted 10 minutes and wasted $6 cover and the cost of a drink. I would be very embarrassed to identify any of the people playing music at the club a "DJ". They drop horrible beats and would be kicked out of any city club mentioned above. Calgary will never be on the gay map. The main reason for friends to visit here is to take them out of the city and show them how beautiful of a countryside we have. Sapien will last as long as a Calgary summer.

Now I can Visit Calgary Again!
I live in Vancouver and have visited Calgary & Twisted while there. While I had a good time at Twisted it would have been nice to have another place to go as well, while I was there. It gets boring going to the same place every time you go out. The fact that I live in Vancouver and HEAR all the negative feed back about the way Twisted has treated its community is enough to make me NOT GO TO TWISTED at all upon my next visit. People & Establishment need to both work to gether to make it a place that people want to go to. The fact that there will finally be some competition for both places will bring NEW people out. No matter what each place will have it's own following, thats just the way things go. Play Nice and they will both have a thriving establishment! I look forward to visiting Club Sapian upon my next Visit, I may visit Twisted, IF I HAVE TO!

Are you bragging or complaining? I can’t comment on the clubs in Toronto, New York City, London or Chicago since I have only been in the clubs in Montreal, San Francisco, and LA. In my opinion, it is unfair to compare Club Sapien or any club in Calgary, to clubs in those cities. To be clichéd, you are comparing apples and oranges. Most, if not all of the cities you mentioned have a gay population greater than Calgary’s entire population or Alberta’s population for that matter. Calgary could not support a club the size of those in LA or New York City, nor could a club here regularly afford DJ’s the likes of Van Buuren, Tiësto, Guetta, Moran, or Fedde Le Grand. Maybe I’m exposing my rural and therefore, totally inadequate social sophistication here, but I actually appreciate, the comfortable ambience, the friendly caring management and staff, and the excellent DJ’s at Club Sapien. As far as I am concerned, Club Sapien is just what Calgary needed. By the way, I don’t think any of the bars or clubs in Calgary will notice you’re not there or care why.

Play was a joke...Flash will be gone in a...
upscale gay bar? Seriously? Who is your target market? This isn't New York or Toronto or Vancouver. The size of the pretentious community is so small here that no business can survive strickly on their patronage. Was I suppose to feel special that I was being searched before I went into Play? There is a reason I never went back again. Don't think I'll even bother with Flash. Just the fact it is tied together with Play is enough to put me off

Thank you Sapien!
I have visited Twisted a number of times in the past year with my girlfriend, and I always found myself appalled upon joining the line up outside. It was never the wait that bothered me, it was the staff picking out friends/attractive men/regulars in general to skip the line. Once inside, I could expect to be charged cover if I wasn't sucking on my girlfriends face or wearing plaid. What I found most irritating, was standing up at the bar ready to order, and I would not be asked what I would like to drink until every male was served before me. At Sapien, I experienced NONE of that! Cover is for everyone after a certain time, and I don't mind that in the slightest! The staff working the bar did a fantastic job serving patrons in the order they came up. And my favorite part, no bitchy intimidating demeanor from the staff! The whole atmosphere is so welcoming! Here's wishing Sapien a successful and lengthy run in Calgary!

Those who live in glass houses...
It's clear that a certain club owner didn't get his way and he has some compettion now (que the violin). However, if he could pull his head out of his ass he would see that Sapien is really not out to get him they are there simply for the gay community and no one else. If he would come down off his ego trip and actually work with the community instead of pouting in the corner he would see that people would start going out to twisted again. The nice thing about Sapien is the staff, they are the nicest group of people. I'm not knocking twisted, but really, when your the owner of a nightclub, is it really professional to try and pick up as many 18 year old boys you possibly can each night???? I love going out, but not if it means having to sit and watch a middle age man take advantage of young intoxicated guys because it makes him feel liike the man. The Calgary Gay community is much like a small town, if half the town works against the other half...it gets us no where...just saying.

Congrats
Congrats to Mike on opening Club Sapien! I visited Calgary this summer during the week of Canada day and was surprised to find no nightclubs open, only the backlot and eagle. When I worked at boyztown We could easily get a good crowd out on a wed or thurs. I hope this helps bring the community together once again. Looking forward to checking this out on my next trip to Calgary!
