Adam Lambert chats with fab magazine
PODCAST / Emerging man-diva clears the record on AMA controversy

Listen to fab's interview with Adam Lambert:

"I'm a sexual person. I am avant-garde, I like edgier things and I like experimenting with that imagery," says openly gay rocker and American Idol alumnus Adam Lambert, who recently courted controversy in his televised performance at the American Music Awards (AMA).

He's since received major flack for his theatrical face-to-crotch grind with a backup dancer, which was edited out of the rebroadcast on the east coast, and a man-on-man kiss he shared with his keyboard player (the AMA director cut to a wide shot of the stage rather than show it close-up).

"Rock and roll is a prostitute and it has to be tarted up," says Lambert, quoting Todd Haynes's Velvet Goldmine, a film he says heavily influenced his persona. "I just wanted to do something unexpected and different and break out from the expectation a little. You come off Idol and there's this expectation that you're going to be this mass appeal, mass marketed, family friendly, granola, easy listening, easily digestible thing, and that's definitely not me as an artist."

According to AMA broadcaster ABC, more than 1,500 complaints were filed denouncing Lambert's performance, but that number is tiny compared to the program's 14 million viewers. The morning after the AMA, ABC cancelled Lambert's scheduled appearance on Good Morning America. CBS's The Early Show stepped in and booked Lambert but he found himself the subject of further censorship and controversy there.

"We gave this some real thought," a representative of The Early Show told the LA Times when asked why the network chose to blur a clip of Lambert's man-to-man kiss from the AMA but then showed an uncensored version of the Madonna/Britney/Christina three-way smooch from the 2003 MTV VMAs.

"The Madonna image is very familiar and has appeared countless times, including many times on morning television," said the CBS spokesperson, to the LA Times. "The Adam Lambert image is a subject of great current controversy, has not been nearly as widely disseminated and, for all we know, may still lead to legal consequences."

"That's weak," says Lambert. "Someone didn't give it some real thought when they did it."

When Lambert, who used ABC's censorship and the ensuing debate to point out the double standards applied to expressions of straight sexuality compared to those of gay sexuality, found out about CBS's homophobic censorship, he says he "just laughed and went 'Are you kidding me? You guys just proved my point, thank you.' "

"It's one performance, I think it'll blow over," says Lambert. "Definitely what I don't want is people assuming that's how I intended to do every performance or that's how I plan on conducting my career as an artist. My album, track to track, is very diverse. It's an eclectic mix of music. [For Your Entertainment] is the one song that is very seductive, kind of dark and sexual but other songs on there explore other themes."

Lambert says he's not going to put people "in bondage fashion" for every song he performs, but that doesn't mean he plans to apologize for his performance.

"I'm not going to apologize, I promise," says Lambert with conviction. "I don't think what I've done is wrong. I want to be myself and I feel like that was what I was doing on stage the other night."

Make sure to sign fab's petition to help prove that ABC offended more than 1,500 people by choosing to censor Adam Lambert's performance.

Lambert doens't deserve this
I can't believe what CBS and ABC did to this kid. Like him or not he has helped prove that America is still radically freaked out by gay sexuality. For god sake's they censored a gay kiss that happened on Ellen ages ago and they do it on the daytime soaps. Not to mention the Chris Brown booking afterwards....Balls to that America is fucked.

Hepburn
Chris Brown a bumbling douchebag who beat the crap out of his gf's face, even REARRANGING it, is according to GMA, a better role model than a gay man. On the AMAs, Eminem bragged about RAPING 17 women Janet felt up and grabbed her dancer's crotch so roughly that he fell then bent him over to get 'butt access' Rihanna had over 10 rifles onstage after she got off a sexual torture device Shakira had half naked female dancers visually humping the audience on masse while she sang about animalistic sex Gaga smashed whiskey bottles with her crotch out singing about sex Had Britney also been there grinding against her male and female dancers singing about threesomes, it would have just been seen as another racy female performance. No one said a word. Apparently you can only be queer if you act straight. Two men is perverted whilst two women is sensual. America sucks. Hard. Respect to Adam btw. He is extremely eloquent, driven and has titanium balls/guts.

Adam, it IS that deep.
Ugh, I like this guy's music but I'm so sick of him dismissing gay issues as "not that deep." Maybe in his world, there's been a lot of progress towards acceptance, but not in mine. His video is great too, but they cut away anytime a guy touches him for more than a second. Lots of women fondling him throughout the entire thing, though. I guess he needs to sell records to the middle-aged housewives that think about him while their husbands f*ck them, though.

Unbelievable
America is such a hypocritical country. I can't believe they actually booked Chris Brown after they kicked Adam off their show? I mean.. so a woman beater is better than a sexual gay man? What kinda messed up logic is that? GMA cancelled Adam's concert because they thought he would be sexual again onstage. They must never invite Britney Spears, nor Madonna, nor Beyonce on their show then. America fails so bad. People are just so close minded. What's the big deal with two people kissing? Get over it, you see that everywhere. Who cares if it's a woman with a man, two women or two men.

I agreed to Adam Lambert on 100/100
Adam dont need to give appologize to Parents of childrens to AMA or to anyone. What he make's on his performance are same to what Madonna&Britney make a couple years ago. What is good for there 2 females are good for Adam's to. The childrens who saw that hey my God it is not the problem to Adam, there childrens are the parents so it to Parents to let or not see the AMA and most Adam pass for his performance at 11;00 pm oclock. So I think if the Parents lets saw all the AMA, the childrens saw all the violences we saw in the Emnem performance and all with the dancers to Riyhanna with have each big gun's ouch it is the violence that in front of poor childrens. He we saw jlO to take on her hand the crotch of his own dancer in the AMA on tv that same day who performe also Adam Lambert... it is big sexuality for the childrens to. All the performer's in the industry first are not the BABY SITTER to the parents who dont get is own JOB! So subject for the childrens are not good and it is just the discrimination to Adam's certains peoples are homophobics.

@Marcus
Lol the middle aged housewives are listening to Gokey's CD buddy. I don't know where you hang out because I'm in Uni and everyone who talked about the AMAs likes Adam a lot even if they hate Idol. Everyone as in everyone, straight, black, gay, white, Asian, students, teachers, dudes, girls. If more people had Adam's mindset, progression would be so, so much easier. Remember he got into music not politics so don't enforce YOUR issues onto him or expect him to start some movement. The reason it's not deep for Adam is because he is a free spirit who just lives his life and keeps going despite whatever's thrown at him. He doesn't define himself by his orientation just like I don't define myself my mine. This interview was seriously amazing. The audio needs to be heard by more people.

What an awesome interview! Honest and Pure Genuine! I love the "im kind a romantic, kind a vanilla" - killed me! Go Adam Go! I don't want to sound you be a poster boy, but damn it's about time to adore a gay artist in this industry. And, a Superstar per se. I'm glad to hear you promise not to apologize. Nothing to be apologize for. You are amazing and an inspiration. These haters simply need to stfu. There are lots of other artist for them to adore. Although, Adam is one of a kind. However, I love how Adam said, it facilitated a dialogue! That's the name of the game anyway. Again, Adam is pure genius! And, he EXCITES me, and makes me feel SEXY!!

interesting
Marcus, I don't think you actually listened to the entire interview. For YOU it might be that deep, but for Adam it's not. He's gay but being gay isn't the end all and be all of who he is as a person. He doesn't feel the need or desire to make every instance of his life about the gay struggle. He's right it is a generational thing. My nephew came out at 14 because he felt that his sexuality was just a matter of fact and if people didn't like it too bad. He didn't struggle with it or feel ashamed of it at all and in handling it that way it made those in our family who otherwise might've had a problem really respect him for his strength and courage. Adam handles himself beautifully and always gives thought provoking interviews. Thanks for conducting one of, if not the best, interviews of this fascinating man.

Move on to another subject
Okay this is day #5 of this controversy. It's amazing to me all the people that complain how disgusting they felt Adam's performance was goes on every site reads every article, comments on every article and didn't shut the TV off since in case you didn't notice that night the award part of the show was OVER before Adam came on. It's an award show to see who won Artist Of The Year was the last award. There was nothing else after Adam if you didn't like it so much why didn't you shut it off? I don't get America they continue to watch what was offensive to them and then complain about it. From the beginning it was easy to see which way the performance was going that was your time to shut off the TV and go to bed. Unreal. Grow up America. That is why this is a FREE country, freedom of speech and otherwise. Noone liked looking at Michael Jackson grabbing his crotch in every song either but he wasn't gay so I guess it didnt matter! Move on America worry about the country right now because it's going down the tubes with unemployment I think we should complain more about that. Adam will be a superstar one day regardless of everyone's ignorance. Mark my words.

Excellent Interview
Loved the interview. Thanks. You and Adam were so in tune that I felt like I was eavesdropping on a conversation between two good friends. Even though its not his agenda, it takes a lot of guts for Adam to put himself out there to be used as a catalyst for the discussion that needs to take place in the US around acceptance and sexuality. Some criticize him for saying "it's not that deep" but he has evolved to the point where for him its not. Everybody I know feels the same way as Adam. It's a non issue. I don't see Canadian society going to hell in a handbasket because of it. I'm more shocked by the fierceness of the negative reactions than by anything Adam did or said. Chill out, people. It's REALLY not that deep

Adam Is Awesome
Thank you for the great interview. I am a 30 something married woman with 2 small children from the south and I adore this man. Me and my 9 year old daughter got the chance to meet Adam over the summer and he is just the most humble, amazing person I have ever met. I was watching the AMA's and I allowed my child to stay up and watch it too since she loves him as much as I do and she never even gave notice to the oral sex simulation....why because children do not have the mind set to see that and think about it being sexual because they dont know what sex is. She was most concerned about if Adam fell or not....oh and the kiss, lol She knows Adam is gay she knows what being gay means but it doesnt change how much she adores him. Some people think Im nuts to even let her be a fan...but you know what my daughter will grow up to be a non-judgemental young lady and I will have Adam Lambert to thank for that. So Adam you just keep being yourself and dont worry about the haters they dont know what they are going to be missing out on.

AMA Performance
I totally understand how Adam feels but I have to say I think he needs to be somewhat careful or he may push fans away from him as a gay man and a musician. I was for what he did but I am a small number. I just think the blow job thing could have been left out. I love Adam and I want his success and then he can help the gay issue. I am afraid he may lose alot of shows that are afraid he might be afraid he'll do something a little too much. I want him to succeed. He needs to pick the right time for it. VMAs, etc. and not an ABC show. My son is gay and he feels the same as me. We just don't want it to backfire on the gay community. Good luck Adam.

The Wonder of Adam
Adam is one of the most talented, articulate, honest men I have ever heard interviewed. He has never said a negative word about anyone, yet Gene Simmons and now many media types feel they have the right to dictate how he lives his life and presents his artistry. Well you know what, you lose, because Adam has too much integrity to be bullied. We need to celebrate and support him, he's a keeper.

Randy, no, hon,
His concert was not cancelled by ABC because he was off tune or he fell. So you are missing the point by a mile. People are getting distracted by the gay thing because ABC decided to make it a gay thing. Adam did the crotch move on a female dancer, and not a word. Janet Jackson grabbed her male dancers crotch and bent him over, not a word. @Janette, did you even listen to what this man has said here and over and over. Stop making this about him helping a cause. Just quit. He's not interested

Titanium Balls
I agree with the entry entitled Hepburn about the titanium balls. I guess maybe you have to live in Canada to appreciate Adam. I was literally in tears last night from a diatribe written by a gay man in the US about Adam. I love to see some honest support for him from the gay community and not just the middle aged housewives and star-struck teeny boppers. I don't think Adam is dismissing gay issues as not that deep, instead he is dismissing the criticism. To me Adam has the best attitude about being gay that I have ever seen. He could have saved me from years of therapy. This is what he said that helped me in People magazine, "you have to be proud of yourself, own who you are and what you're about, and never make apologies for it."

Double Standard
Yes, there is a huge double standard in the US - and it breaks my heart that so many get freaked out by male/male sexuality but are so titillated by female/female sexuality. Such a tough road to navigate for Adam, in both the straight & gay "communities" I was at the AMA show and felt bad for Adam that he stumbled, his vocals weren't that great and he did not get the applause he deserves (if only for giving such an energetic, risky performance). The kiss was hot, the other sexual stuff in context and certainly no worse than others were doing. Someone complained about the music video: Adam stated that the director and editors were in charge of what made it onto the music video, not him. I'm sure they had to make it more marketable, but that's not Adam's fault. I think that Adam can do more to help promote gay civil rights by being himself (a PERFORMER who wants to entertain) than by taking up political causes at this point. Sadly, he will always be either too gay or not gay enough - what a difficult road he will have to navigate.

Double standards
ABC has no real excuse for cancelling Adam Lambert and then booking Chris Brown who beats up women, are ABC stating that beating women is acceptable? Adam'a performance at the AMAs who a complete interpretation of the song, I loved it, it makes no difference to me what the narrow minded minority have to say about it, their opinion does not count.

@but it was crap
Urm but that's not the issue. The Nokia Theatre was having major issues with all the performances using heavy bass which is why Gaga, Janet and others used autotune. Adam got dry-sound feedback. He already admitted his vocal wasn't good and that's the only thing he would have changed if he'd reperformed it. What else do you want? Adam turned his fall into a ninja roll whilst Jlo fell on her as.s. No one freaked out because of any of the above, they freaked out because they're not comforable with a gay male doing what females and straight males do.

Janette, his album and followers shot right up after Sunday. Pretty much everyone agreed the sound mix was the worst part about that performance, everyone I know was talking about the double standards not about how 'offended' they were by the act. They've even been discussing society's double standards and his performance over here in the UK on shows and on entertainment news. But man, don't you get it? Adam's not the type of performer who does things for everybody. He's not running for president trying to win over a nation and every community. That doesn't interest him one bit. He is polarizing, that's his style. If you want him to be a certain way, he's not for you. If people want easy listening they should be listening to Jack Johnson. Honestly I don't care if he alienates people left right and center, it's better to weed them out now than later. As Freddie said to May, "If you have no haters, or people are indifferent to you, you're doing something wrong."

Tiring
Censorship? I think not. Lambert was asked if he would tone down his performance for the breakfast crowd live broadcast, he said NO, and TV exec's said PASS. He's a loose canon and they didn't want to risk it. He's an over-processed club kid with no filter or sense of appropriateness, and that's fine. There have been many like him and many will follow. His full-throttle approach is tiring. He'll be performing in large gay discos to pre-recorded tracks in no time.

Gay is OK, but now he is snob !
I don't care if Adam is gay and I don't care if he likes to give "gay disco performances" as long as his sex-performances are not on prime-time TV. What I don't like is his lack of intelligence and now his SNOB attitude towards other AI contestants. The fact that he thinks he's better and more modern because he shows some sex on TV gives an idea of how "shallow" he is.
