A testing party for men who fuck men
UPCOMING IN MONTREAL

Remember the days when buying condoms was an embarrassing experience? I would casually pile up the counter with a million other toiletries, as if doing so would somehow distract the cashier from my naughty purchase. These days most people buy condoms with pride: “Yep, that’s right. I’m getting laid. Throw in a bottle of lube and some gloves with that, please.”

Thanks to safer sex campaigns, condom advertisements and a greater understanding of risk, people seem more comfortable talking about sex and protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). But it doesn’t seem to me that we have the same discourse about testing. Most guys don’t get tested nearly as often as they should.

And is it any wonder? Getting tested, especially when you’re queer, can be quite a traumatic experience. I once visited a downtown clinic instead of my usual gay-friendly one for a blazing urinary tract infection. I ended up leaving in tears. The doctor concluded that I must have an STI because I’m gay. He basically told me I was stupid for having unprotected sex with my boyfriend, even though we’d both been tested, had talked about the risks, and otherwise practised safer sex.

Aids Community Care Montreal’s project, Awareness to Make Change (ATOMc), is designed to destigmatize testing and to get dudes who fuck dudes talking about it. Many sexual health organizations seem to focus on safer sex alone, but ATOMc stresses regular testing and open and frank dialogue about it among partners and fuck-buddies. This incentive-based program, funded by the Montreal Public Health Department, started about two-and-a-half years ago. Here’s how it works: peer recruiters encourage their sex partners to get tested. They give them cards that need to be presented at the testing facility at the time of testing. Each time a card, and its associated new testee, gets tested, the recruiter earns a point. Points can be redeemed for gift cards for joints like Starbucks, iTunes and American Apparel, to name a few. Testees then get a chance to become recruiters themselves so they, too, can earn prizes.

Recruiter Rodrigo Llamas says he decided to participate partly because “healthcare professionals are not always professional. It seems as though they often lack the training required to deal with sensitive issues such as testing . . . They don’t know you and they don’t know who you have sex with. Being a recruiter allows me to let people know they’re not the only ones who get tested; we all do and so do our partners.”

ATOMc’s latest effort, CheckUP! A Testing Party for Boys who Fuck Other Boys,“removes the unpleasant experience of going to a clinic and helps people overcome the barriers associated with testing,” says project coordinator James Mckye. People can get tested without having to wait forever for an appointment or without having to endure the awkward discomfort of sitting in a waiting room with a group of strangers.

The party will feature food, music, videogames and good company. There will also be a nurse who will do the testing without judging you for who you’ve fucked or how many partners you’ve had. There are gift cards for testees and prizes for recruiters who bring in new blood.

“We want not only to make the testing experience a fun one but also to encourage people to have a support person when they get tested,” says Mckye. “For some reason, as much as we talk about sex with our friends, often safer sex is excluded from the conversation.”

ummm
Or you could just man up and get tested? What's the big deal? I've never had a doctor act unprofessionally to me ever and I get tested every 6 months. And by the way having unprotected sex (I'm assuming anal in this articall) is indeed very stupid! No matter who it is and any health care professional who DOESN'T tell you this is acting unprofessionally.

Acting Unprofessionally
If both parteners are comitted, tested, clean and honest it would be stupid not to have unprotected sex. How do you think commited straight couples make babies? Just because you haven't had a negative expreience in getting tested doesn't mean other people haven't. Man up? This is a queer website buddy...

Encouraging
I find myself at 56 years old a bit troubled with the young gay men that hesitate to come out of the closet becase of fear. I think that your organisation you try to help them too. I appreciate people that can actually do something positive about sex without turning everything into a joke. Gaston

are you children
Are you working with children's AIDS prevention? If not, why use the term boy which means a pre-pubescent male? Why infantilize the campaign with cutesy code words like boys when you mean men -- grown men putting their grown male dicks into each other. Not children but men. Grow up indeed.

Testing is RISKY!!!!!!!!
You will be discriminated against in significant ways (Insurance all types, housing, jobs the list is endless) you never thought was possible. Also you will be setting yourself to possibly got to prison because HIV is now criminalized! There are many people making false claims again those with HIV but in this climate there is no justice! DON'T put yourself at risk and at the mercy of those who hate you. TESTING is very RISKY to your entire life!

TESTING is DANGEROUS
Not only do people face CRIMINALIZATION but also DISCRIMINATION in ways that are substantial including mortgage and life insurance to name just a few.

Holy fuck
The radical activists are at it again. Tim, Thomas what idiot would give a loan to a dying person? It's not discrimination it's called business and no it's not nice or humane but it sure is not discrimination. Also it is very important to note that, IF YOU THINK THERE IS A RISK of hiv transmission REGARDLESS OF WEATHER OR NOT YOU HAVE A POSITIVE TEST, then you can be charged. In other words if you go out and have bareback anal sex with 10 guys at a bathhouse and don't tell your partner and he gets HIV you can be charged. Not getting tested will not protect you. Food for thought.

To Mike the Anti-Gay Men, Radical Activist.
"...what idiot would give a loan to a dying person?..." The same IDIOT I suppose who insists I'm dying. What a wad. The incredible and endless negatives of getting testing are real, and CRIMINALIZING people with HIV has made them even more vulnerable than someone of your limitations could possibly understand, that would take a critical conscience something you clearly don't possess. But then again, I'm dying so what do I know?

HIV Kills!!
More feel good activism. It disgusts me. There is nothing okay about HIV. Either the virus or the treatment will eventually kill you. It might not be full blown AIDS it might be a heart attack, or diabetes or kidney failure or whatever. It might not be today, it may be 15 years from now but one way or another it will kill you and you will not have a normal life span. People are only buying time with drugs. So yeah Tim, you're dying and I am truly sorry for that. Gay men seem to have forgotten that message given that infections are rising again. I am very critical. Critical of current HIV prevention strategies and current HIV activism. Also like I said this law does not care if you actually know from a test if you have HIV. If a person does not disclose their risky behavior to their partner and the partner becomes infected then charges can still be laid even if the person who infected them was never tested. HIV is not an acceptable part of gay life.

Mike your ignorance
is truly mind boggling. Un-f'n believable. Either it is willful or...oh never mind. I just can't, I just can't do this anymore...it's exhausting.

Then beat it, Tim.
"testing is dangerous". wow, you're a crybaby asshole. finally gay men (and straight folk too) can get the health information they need. For free. They can protect themselves AND their partners. I remember the "I'd rather not know" attitude in the 80's . Gee, really helped stem the tide. you're either a master troll or a giant fucking baby.
